3 WOMEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES The Virginia freshmen The Cavalier freshmen were the No. 13 ranked recruiting class by Prospects Nation Willoughby and Toussaint were both five-star recruits with Willoughby named the Gatorade High School Girls Basketball New Jersey State Player of the Year and Toussaint earning the same honor in New York. Toussaint was also Miss New York Basketball Both Toussaint and Willoughby were named to the ACC All-Freshman team. It was the first time Virginia has ever had two players earn All-Freshman honors in the same season and only the eighth time that any team has had two freshmen on the team. Neither player was named to the ACC Preseason Newcomer Watch List. Toussaint and Willoughby both earned ACC Freshman of the Week honors this season. Toussaint, who earned the honor the first week of February, scored a team-high 16 points in the Cavaliers overtime win against Georgia Tech. She scored Virginia s final eight points of the first quarter, keying the Cavaliers to a lead at the first break. Toussaint added another 10 points against Duke, leading the Cavaliers in scoring for the second-straight game. Toussaint has made some huge plays down the stretch in games for the Cavaliers. She hit a three-pointer against Louisville in the first meeting between the two this season (Jan. 5) to send the game into overtime. In the regular-season game against Wake Forest, scored 12 of Virginia s 16 points in overtime, including hitting a pair of threes and making two free throws with 12 seconds remaining that sealed the victory for the Cavaliers. Willoughby was named ACC Rookie of the Week on Jan. 30. Willoughby helped lead the Cavaliers on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor against No. 19/21 Virginia Tech and No. 8/9 Notre Dame. Willoughby led the team in scoring in both games, including scoring 18 points in the win over Virginia Tech, going 6-of-8 from the floor and 6-of-7 from the stripe against the Hokies. She was also a key element of the defensive effort that held VT to only 27 points in the game. Willoughby was also a key contributor against Notre Dame as the Cavaliers battled the Irish before coming up short. Willoughby is vying to become the first freshman to lead UVA in rebounding since Brandi Teamer in 2002 and the first freshman guard to do so since Chrissy Reese in 1980 Willoughby has started every game this season, Toussaint missed one game this season, but has started every game she has played in Toussaint (9.5) and Willoughby (9.5) are second and third in the ACC in scoring with ACC Freshman of the Year Francesca Pan of Georgia Tech leading the rookies at 11.0 per game.
