ON DECK The Cavaliers take on Minnesota in a Big Ten/ACC Challenge game against the Golden Gophers on Thursday, Nov. 29 in Minneapolis. The team returns home on Sunday, Dec. 2, hosting No. 14/19 West Virginia SAN JUAN SHOOTOUT This will be the Cavaliers first trip to Puerto Rico. They have previously played in the Junkanoo Jam in the Bahamas and the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands Last Thanksgiving, Virginia played in Hawai i at the Rainbow Wahine Classic, going 1-2 in the three games with losses to Texas and California and a win over Hawai i The San Juan Shootout tournament has been held every years since 1987 In addition to Vanderbilt and Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Eastern Kentucky, Florida State and UW-Milwaukee are also competing The tournament is played at the 5,500-seat Mario Morales Coliseum, named after one of Puerto Rico s most-famous basketball players Morales played professionally for the Mets de Guaynabo, taking the team to eight Puerto Rican BSN league finals and winning three championships. He chose to play in Puerto Rico rather than battling with the language barriers in the NBA. He also competed at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and 1992 Barcelona games On Nov. 6, Puerto Rico passed a non-binding referendum, voting in favor of statehood. Puerto Ricans were asked about their desires in two parts. First, by a 54% to 46% margin, voters rejected their current status as a U.S. commonwealth. In a separate question, 61% chose statehood as the alternative, compared with 33% for the semi-autonomous sovereign free association and 6% for outright independence While the results may be an indicator of what Puerto Ricans want, statehood will not be possible without congressional action in Washington, something that is not guaranteed Initiatives on statehood had failed previously in 1967, 1993, and The Cavaliers are off to a 3-0 start for the second year in a row Last season, in Joanne Boyle s first year at the helm, the Cavaliers went 4-0 to start the year, defeating No. 3 Tennessee in overtime for that fourth victory This is the sixth time since that Virginia has started the season with a 3-0 or better record In that same span, UVa has only twice started 4-0, last season and a 6-0 start to STEALS The aggressive Cavalier defense led the ACC in steals-per-game last season (13.1). It was the largest deficit the team had overcome since it came back from down 16 points in the victory over Longwood in (11/21/10) Last season, Virginia twice came back from double-digit deficits to win, trailing Wake Forest by 13 (2/24/12) and James Madison by 12 (12/20/12)
