First Serve: Xavier returns home for a two-match Atlantic 10 homestand this weekend as it is set to play host to La Salle and Temple. On Friday, Oct. 2, the Musketeers and Explorers will face off at 7 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. match on Saturday between XU and the Owls of Temple. This weekend also marks the first conference home match of the season for the Musketeers. Scouting La Salle La Salle (3-17, 0-2 A-10) is coming off back-to-back losses as it opened Atlantic 10 play at home this past weekend. The Explorers lost to both George Washington and Charlotte in straight sets to set their A-10 record at 0-2 heading into the weekend. La Salle is led by Rachel Stemper with 223 kills on the year and three Explorers have tallied 25 blocks. Samantha Tulski s 238 digs is tops on the team while Carly Conlon serves as the team s primary setter, averaging 4.28 assists/set. Scouting Temple Temple (6-5, 2-0 A-10) is riding a two-match conference winning streak as it dropped Charlotte (3-1) and George Washington (3-0) at home last weekend. Notably, two of the Owls losses this season have come at the hands of No. 1 Penn State. Temple is led by Yun Yi Zhang, who averages a league-best 5.78 kills/set and Ariel Peirre with 143 digs for the year. TU s primary setter is Jackie Morrison with 391 assists and Jessica Antosz has a team-best 34 blocks. The Series Xavier and La Salle have previously played 27 times dating back to 1992 and the Musketeers have never lost to the Explorers. The last time the two squads met was last season when XU swept LAS at home in Cintas Center. The series between Xavier and Temple is a close one with XU holding a onegame advantage, 17-16, all-time. His career total now sits at and he needs only two more wins to reach the major career milestone of 400 victories. 1,000 and Counting Senior outside hitter Kelly Ruth became the 10th member of XU s 1,000-1,000 Club at the 2009 NC State Raleigh Crabtree Valley Marriott Classic Sept Ruth eclipsed the 1,000 dig mark with a six-dig outing versus Dartmouth on Sept. 11 and surpassed the 1,000 kill mark with a 13-kill match versus DePaul on Sept. 12. She has 1077 career kills and 1050 career digs heading into this week s matches. Senior Lauren Kaminsky also reached a career milestone at the NC State Classic, reaching 1,000 digs vs. George Mason on Sept. 12. She now has 1043 career digs. Both Ruth and Kaminsky are on track to break into the XU top-10 digs list this season. She posted three double-digit dig matches, two of which were 20+ dig nights. Paszkiewicz was the only Musketeer named to the NC State Classic All-Tournament Team for the weekend of Sept She was named MVP for her outstanding work at the tournament where XU went 4-0 to capture the title. In the Musketeers last tournament of the season, senior Kelly Ruth and Vorherr both made the all-tournament roster for the 2009 Ohio State Sports Import Classic. For the weekend of Sept , XU was 2-1, losing only to the host Buckeyes, the tournament champions. Conference Stats Xavier currently ranks in the top five in four categories as a team in the Atlantic 10. XU ranks third in blocks (1.88) and fifth in hitting percentage (.220), opp. hitting percentage (.191) and services aces (1.33). With 21 solo blocks on the season, XU already has nearly two-thirds of its solo blocks total from the entire 2008 season (35). Senior Hillary Otte leads the team in blocking, averaging 0.80 blocks/set. Freshman Alex Smith s.326 hitting percentage ranks her fourth in the A-10 while junior Claire Paszkiewicz ranks fourth in the conference with 9.57 assists/set. Freshman sits in third place in the A-10 for digs with 4.33/ set and junior Shannon Voors is seventh (0.32) in service aces while freshman Kaleigh Rougraff ranks eighth (0.31) in the same category. Senior outside hitter Lauren Kaminsky is trying to break into the top-10 all-time digs list with 1043 career digs, only 29 out of 10th place. Senior outside hitter Kelly Ruth has a career total of 1050 digs to go along with 1077 kills for her tenure as a Musketeer. Ruth became the 10th member of XU s 1,000-1,000 Club on Sept. 12 while at the NC State Classic. Ruth Named A-10 Offensive Player of the Week Senior outside hitter Kelly Ruth earned Atlantic 10 Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors as announced by the conference office on Monday, Sept. 14. Ruth became the 10th member of XU s 1,000-1,000 Club over the weekend at the NC State Classic and averaged 3.4 kills and 2.0 digs per set for the tournament. Vorherr Named A-10 Defensive Player of the Week Freshman libero was named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday, Sept., 8, as announced by the conference office. The A-10 added the defensive award this season and Vorherr is the first Musketeer to earn the weekly honor. She was named to the 2009 Xavier Invitational All-Tournament following her efforts over the weekend. Vorherr tallied a career- and matchhigh 29 digs versus No. 7 Michigan on Saturday and followed that with a 22-dig performance on Sunday versus Tennessee. The single-elimination tournament will feature six of the league s 10 teams. The top six teams in the league, based on regular season conference records, qualify for the event and will be seeded based on their finish in the league standings. The event will be hosted by the University of Dayton. In Case You Forgot Last season, two significant changes took place at the collegiate volleyball level. The term game was replaced with the term set and sets one through four were changed to a 25-point format. Previously, the sets went to 30 points. Up Next The Musketeers will hit the road next weekend for two Atlantic 10 matches away from home.
