REFEREE ADVANCEMENT CLINIC Welcome! YOUR CLINICIAN IS JIM FEICKERT 2 Managing Stress 1
Overview of Stress Commonly defined as physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension Stress is the body s response to a demand placed upon it. Increased stress results in increased productivity Prolonged stress can cause physical and behavioral issues When the external stimulus becomes too great, internal collapse becomes inevitable There is always a limit beyond which your mind and body will flex no longer Signs of Stress Becoming unusually irritable Anxiety and nervousness Feeling overwhelmed Finding it increasingly hard to concentrate Constant fatigue Onset of unusual physical problems Causes of Stress Change Work overload Uncontrollable situations Distressing work conditions Interpersonal relationships Inner self Disorganization and lack of time management 2
Reducers of Stress Balance work and play Distinguish between achievement and perfection. Recognize your limits Exercise Eat right Get enough sleep Manage your time Engage in humor and fun Take time for solitude Pre-Match Know the rules Check equipment Check complete uniform Leave workday worries behind Limit caffeine Arrive Early Meet with your co-officials / work team Meet with the coaches briefly Have a thorough pre-match conference with work team Second referee Line judges Table crew 3
During the Match Focus on the play Block out the spectators Don t underestimate the match work hard Make eye contact with your co-officials Smile or laugh, if appropriate have some fun Relax your neck and shoulders Move your feet between points When Things Become Tense Breathe Start fresh with each point Make signals deliberately without rushing Count the contacts Keep your sense of humor Post-Match Discuss the highlights of the match Discuss the low points of the match Analyze any problems and discuss ways of handling situations for next match Learn from your triumphs and disasters PUT THE MATCH BEHIND YOU AND MOVE ON! 4
Need Some Help? Giving Information to the First Referee Special thanks to Gloria Cox Lone Star Region Role of the Second Referee Serve and protect the first referee Move to see the play Provide information to the first referee Even if the help is not acknowledged Even if the first referee makes a different decision Pre-Match Conference Discuss communication preferences 4 hits / 2 hits Illegal hits Back-row situations Missed pancakes Issuing sanctions 5
Displaying Discreet Signals In the middle of the chest Using the hand on the side of the offending team While standing far enough away from the pole to be seen clearly Quickly enough so that the first referee can make the call in a timely manner From the Second Referee s Viewpoint A back-row attack or back-row block Display a discreet back-row attack or back-row block signal Drop the signal if the first referee indicates a different decision If not acknowledged, blow the whistle and display the appropriate signals From the Second Referee s Viewpoint 2 hits or an illegal hit Display the discreet signal to the first referee, only when the play is out of the view of the first referee Give this information sparingly Drop the signal if the first referee does not acknowledge it or indicates a different opinion The second referee may NOT whistle this fault 6
From the Second Referee s Viewpoint A missed pancake Display the ball down signal overtly without whistling, giving the first referee the opportunity to make the call Only display this signal If there is certainty that the ball contacted the floor Whistle and begin the sequence of signals, if the first referee fails to whistle to stop play From the Second Referee s Viewpoint No touch on the block (possible 4 hits violation) Display a discreet 4 hits signal when the fourth contact occurs Drop the signal if the first referee does not acknowledge the signal or indicates a touch on the block Display the 4 hits signal more obviously, if 4 players contact the ball out of the view of the first referee The second referee may NOT whistle this violation From the Second Referee s Viewpoint A subtle touch of the ball as it goes out of bounds Display the touch signal overtly and high enough so that the first referee can see it easily This signal should be used sparingly and only when the touch might not have been seen by the first referee 7
From the Second Referee s Viewpoint The coach makes a derogatory comment regarding the first referee s judgment Whistle Step to the offending team s side of the court Verbalize the request for a warning/sanction and identify the offending team member Ball Handling Making the Judgment Calls Know the Rules Characteristics of the Hit (9.2) The ball may touch any part of the body The ball must not be caught and/or thrown; it can rebound in any direction The ball may touch various parts of the body, provided that the contacts take place simultaneously Exception for first team contact 8
Know the Rules Faults in Playing the Ball (9.3) CATCH: the ball is caught and/or thrown; it does not rebound from the hit DOUBLE CONTACT: a player hits the ball twice in succession or the ball contacts various parts of his/her body in succession The Challenge Be Consistent! Consistency does not mean that you will make the same number of calls on each team Consistency does mean that similar contacts must be judged the same way Consistency requires that you set a level of ball handling that can be maintained Once you establish your expectations, you are stuck with them Beware of the slippery slope of starting too loose or too tight 9
Hindrances to Consistency Automatic calls Body position Unorthodox technique Level of setters and disparity between setters Non-setters Spin of ball Coaches expectations Fan expectations Judge the Contact The only valid criterion for judging ball handling is: VISION Not the sound of the contact Not the technique or position of the player Not the flight of the ball Not the roar of the coach or the crowd Unusual-looking contacts CAN be legal Judge the Contact Get your eyes ahead of the ball and watch the play unfold for better anticipation Watch the hands go to the ball, rather than the ball coming into the hands Stay with the ball until the contact is made If there is any uncertainty do not make a call! 10
Avoid Automatic Calls Ball recovered out of the net Hitting the ball upward with an open palm Contact with the ball from behind a player s head Ball that is overrun by a player One-handed sets REBOUND IS THE KEY! First Team Contact Multiple contacts are allowed on the first team contact including rebounding from one part of the body to another Contacts must be part of a single attempt to play the ball Questions to consider: Was the ball over-controlled? Was the ball under-controlled? Was the ball contacted using the same amount of time that the setter uses to set the ball? Did the ball roll up the arms? 1 st Contact What s Your Call? 11
1 st Contact What s Your Call? Two-Handed Sets Spin a double hit Back spin or forward spin usually indicates poor form, not a true double hit Side spin on a two-handed set usually indicates a double hit 2 nd Contact What s Your Call? 12
2 nd Contact What s Your Call? Deep Dish Sets Watch for over control Watch for the ball coming to rest in the setter s hands The contact point and release point should be the same Deep Dish Sets What s Your Call? 13
One-Handed Sets Legal one-handed sets will almost always spin The only possible violation is an illegal hit ONLY if the ball visibly comes to rest or is caught or thrown One handed sets should not be judged any differently than other one-handed contacts Tips or Dumps The player s hand should be in motion before contact is made with the ball Possible causes of an illegal hit: The ball stops in the player s hand The player brings the ball back before releasing it The player contacts the ball behind the head and brings it forward Contact begins on one side of the body, and the ball is released on the other side Tip What s Your Call? 14
Tip What s Your Call? Blocking Multiple contacts while blocking are legal This includes contact with parts of the body that are NOT higher than the net The only possible call is illegal hit If the player traps the ball against the net If the ball visibly comes to rest in the player s hands A blocking motion initiated as an offensive play is judged as any other regular team contact Multiple contacts are not permitted Techniques and Tips Watch the warm-up to determine the level of skill of the participants Familiarize yourself with the style and skill of the setters The same contacts should be called illegal at the beginning of the first set and the end of the last set Minor adjustments can be made at the beginning of the first set The score should not be a determining factor in deciding the illegality of a contact 15
Questions to Ask Yourself Am I looking too hard to find fault with the first contact on the ball? Will I be able to keep up with the level of calls made in the beginning of the match? Am I inserting myself into the match too much? Am I making it fair for everyone without giving an advantage to one team? Summary Develop a philosophy of ball handling. Watch experienced referees as often as possible. Notice the contacts that do or do not call. If appropriate, ask them what criteria they used to make their judgments. Ask your partners for feedback after each match. Don t over think! When in doubt, play it out! Resolving Scoring Issues Facing Your Worst Nightmare 16
Step 1: Score Sheet Review Ensure the team that is currently serving is in the correct rotation in comparison with the receiving team The team that SERVED to start the match should always be one service round box BEHIND the team that received first The team that RECEIVED to start the match should always be one service round box ahead of the team that served first Step 1: Score Sheet Review The scorer announces, Wrong server when Gold #18 serves and states that #9 should be serving Step 1: Score Sheet Review The scorer announces, Wrong server when Silver #2 serves and states that #8 should be serving 17
Step 2: Lineup Check Have the players from both teams line up in their current positions and confirm the next server for the RECEIVING team Step 2: Lineup Check Team B SERVED to begin the set. #2 serves the ball, and the scorer announces, Wrong server. The review of the scoresheet confirms that #8 should have served Step 2: Lineup Check If the score sheet does NOT show the correct next server for the receiving team, there are other issues with the score sheet Scorer is an entire rotation behind, lineups were entered incorrectly, or scorer is simply lost 18
Handling a Wrong Server If both of these steps reveal that the team had a wrong server, any points scored during that term of service must be removed Place the team in the correct service order and award the point and service to the other team The exit score for the player that should have served will be one more than the previous exit score If the opponent has already served when the wrong server is discovered, no points are removed Place the team in the correct service order, and the opponent continues to serve Resolving Scoring Issues If the review of the score sheet reveals many mistakes, the most important thing is to verify that the teams are in the correct rotation and that the score is correct There is no benefit in spending a great deal of time studying the score sheet to figure out what went wrong Once you have confirmed that the teams are in the correct rotation, record an appropriate exit score under the last server, and resume the match as quickly as possible Clinic Wrap-Up Manage your stress Be a helpful second referee Develop consistency in ball handling judgment Two simple steps will resolve most scoring issues 57 19
