Purdue returns 12 players, including five starters, from the 2011 team which advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. Head coach Dave Shondell is in his 10th season with the team, which was picked third in the 2012 preseason poll. Last Time Out: The Boilermakers went 1-1 at the /Big East Challenge in Cincinnati last weekend, falling to No. 24 Louisville and rebounding with a four-set win over the host Bearcats. Purdue (29-5, 16-4 ) made its 14th NCAA Tournament appearance and knocked off seven ranked foes in The Boilermakers finished tied for second in the and went on to advance to the Sweet 16 before falling to No. 21 Florida State. Statistically Speaking: Outside hitter Ariel Turner paces the Boilermakers with 4.00 kills and 2.54 digs per set, while also serving up a team-leading 13 aces. Outside hitter Val Nichol (2.11), middle blocker Anna Drewry (2.10) and Catherine Rebarchak (2.00) follow, while freshman outside hitter Annie Drews (1.88) also contributes offensively. Drews is hitting a team-best.472 clip, while six others are hitting.250 or better. Defensively, libero Carly Cramer has posted 4.41 digs per set, while Turner (2.54) and defensive specialist Hilliary Fox (2.08), setter Rachel Davis (2.00) and defensive specialist Amanda Miller (1.95) follow. Cramer and Miller also have served up 10 aces. At the net, middle blockers Kaisley Fisher, Kiki Jones and Drewry pace the team with 1.33, 1.00 and 1.00 stuffs per set. As a team, Purdue is hitting.262 and has served up 42 aces. All-American outside hitter Ariel Turner, the reigning Player of the Year, paced the offense in 2011, averaging 4.84 kills per set, while also adding 2.84 digs and 20 aces. Outside hitter Val Nichol ranks second among returners in kills per set with Outside hitters Katie Griffin (1.84) and Catherine Rebarchak (1.77) follow. Middle blocker Kiki Jones led Purdue at the net with 1.22 blocks, while also adding 1.44 kills per set. Middle blocker Anna Drewry added 1.23 kills and 0.90 blocks per set. Turner is the team s top returning defensive player with 2.84 digs per set. Carly Cramer (2.70), setter Rachel Davis (2.51) and Hilliary Fox (1.45) also contributed defensively. Series Information Jacksonville State (Purdue leads the series 1-0): The Boilermakers won the lone previous meeting with the Gamecocks via sweep at the 2011 Active Ankle Challenge. UAB (Purdue leads the series 2-0): The Boilermakers won both previous meetings with the Blazers, taking a five-set decision on Sept. 9, 1994 at the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla., and a sweep on Sept. 5, 1998 at the Mortar Board Premier in West Lafayette. Bowling Green (BGSU leads the series 1-0): The Falcons won the lone previous meeting in a fiveset match on Sept. 2, 1987 in West Lafayette. Bold denotes home match. They will move to 7-2 on the season and extend their current win streak to two matches. 2 The Dave Shondell File Shondell, who became the fourth coach in Purdue volleyball history in February 2003, is in his 10th year at the helm of the Boilermaker volleyball program. Shondell joined the Purdue staff after 22 years as a successful club and high school coach in central Indiana. In 13 years as head coach at Muncie Central High School, he led the Bearcats to four state titles and a record. That winning percentage (.891) is the second-best winning percentage in Indiana high school volleyball history. In his nine years at Purdue, Shondell has posted a overall record, including a mark in the Conference. The Gamecocks are coached by Joseph Goodson, who is in his second year with the team. Last Time Out: The Gamecocks went 2-2 at the Central Arkansas Invitational last weekend. JSU topped Jackson State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff, but ended the weekend with losses to South Dakota and Central Arkansas. Statistically Speaking: Outside hitters Hivya Leite (2.63), Jen Meyer (2.54) and Kelsey Anderson (2.18) lead the JSU offense averaging more than two kills per set. Middle blocker Nichole Merget (1.95), outside hitter Taylor Long (1.63) and middle bocker Kaitlyn Zelhart (1.50) also contribute offensively. Meyer boasts a team-best.314 hitting percentage and adds 0.83 blocks per set, while Anderson has served up a team-leading 17 aces. Merget paces the team at the net with 1.05 blocks per set. Defensively, libero Kelly Cole leads the way with 3.74 digs per set. Anderson (2.23), setter Abbey Heredia (1.97) setter Alina Agamy (1.77) and outside hitter Emily Rutherford (1.59) also aid the Gamecock defense. Understanding UAB At First Glance: The UAB Blazers (1-6) hit the road for the fourth-straight weekend when they come to West Lafayette for the Active Ankle Challenge. The Blazers return 10 letterwinners, including six starters from the 2011 team which went 23-9 and finished second in the Conference USA. UAB is coached by Kerry Messersmith, who is in her seventh year with the team. Last Time Out: The Blazers went 2-2 last week. UAB posted a four-set home win over george State and then went 1-2 at the Carolina Clash in Columbia, S.C., topping Winthrop and falling to South Carolina and Clemson. Statistically Speaking: All-C-USA selection Sam Serley leads UAB with 2.66 kills and 1.32 blocks per set, while hitting at a team-best.376 clip. Outside hitters Kate Morrell (2.38) and Ally Slaughter (2.19) and outside/middle hitter Sam Skinner (2.10) also add more than two kills per set. Outside hitter Michele Simmons (1.97) and middle blocker Kiriana Hirini (1.78) follow. Hirini also adds 0.86 blocks per set and hits at a.321 clip. Slaughter and Morrell each chip in 10 aces to the team tally. Setters Alison Woods and Becca Howard add 1.95 and 1.68 digs per set, while defensive specialist Bethany Stanford (1.67) and Slaughter (1.63) also help out. Facts about the Falcons At First Glance: The Bowling Green Falcons (2-6) wrap up the non-conference season in West Lafayette, marking their fourth straight road weekend. BGSU returns nine letterwinners, including six starters, from the 2011 squad, which posted a record, including a 6-10 mark and third place finish in Mid-America Conference East Division play. The Falcons are coached by Danijela Tomic, who is in her first year with the team. Last Time Out: The Falcons went 1-2 at the BYU Nike Invitational in Provo, Utah, last weekend. BGSU topped Portland State and fell to No. 21 BYU and Utah. Statistically Speaking: Outside hitters Paige Penrod (3.83) and All-MAC honoree Danielle Tonyan (3.33) pace the Falcon offense with more than three kills per set. Outside hitter Lindsey Butterfield adds 2.41 kills per set. Penrod has served up a team-best 16 aces and adds 2.33 digs per set. Defensively, libero Ashley Dunn leads the way with 3.73 digs per set, followed by Penrod, setter Laura Avila (2.13) and defensive specialist Libby Dachenhaus (2.10). At the net, middle blockers Kaitlyn Skinner (0.97) and Leah Shaw (0.81) pace the team. Poll Position The Boilermakers fell three spots to No. 14 in this week s AVCA Coaches Poll. Last week, Purdue was ranked 11th, down from seventh on Aug. 27, which tied the highest ranking in program history, matching the No. 7 listing from Nov. 14, Purdue was ranked No. 9 in the 2012 Preseason AVCA Coaches Poll, marking their highest starting listing in program history. This week s ranking is Purdue s 118th all-time since the AVCA polls began in 1982, including preseason and postseason listings. 4 Hitting on All Cylinders The Boilermakers posted a team hitting percentage of.529 against George Washington on Aug. 25, marking the third-highest match effort in program history and the best in the rally scoring era. All seven hitters in the match posted an effort of.300 or better and Purdue did not make a hitting error in the first set, posting 11 kills in 16 swings for a.688 percentage. The.529 effort ranks behind a.560 mark against Notre Dame on Sept. 8, 1983, and a.534 efficiency against Michigan on Sept. 24, The 30-Dig Club Redshirt junior Carly Cramer pulled up a career-high tying 30 digs against Rice, Aug. 31, marking the 17th time in Purdue history a player has achieved the feat. It was the second time in Cramer s career she had reached 30 digs, matching her effort at Minnesota on Oct. 1, Cramer is the fifth player to achieve the feat twice, alongside Kelli Miller, Blair Bashen, Becky Kanitz and Anne Mastandrea. An Ace in the Hand Senior Ariel Turner served up seven aces against Cincinnati, Sept. 8, marking the first seven ace effort by a Boilermaker since Katie Gibbons did so at Michigan State on Nov. 8, It was the most by a Purdue player in the rally scoring era, topping Tiffany Fisher s five vs. Iowa on Nov. 5, 2010, and Brittany Dildine s six at Illinois on Nov. 18, Tournament Honors Redshirt senior defensive specialist Amanda Miller was named MVP of the Mortar Board Premier, while outside hitter Ariel Turner and setter/outside hitter Val Nichol garnered all-tournament team nods. Turner and libero Carly Cramer earned all-tournament team honors at the Tiger Classic in Houston. Cramer and middle blocker Anna Drewry received all-tournament team accolades at the /Big East Challenge. Preseason Predictions The ninth-ranked Boilermaker volleyball team picked up another vote of confidence as the league coaches picked Purdue third in the preseason poll and senior outside hitter Ariel Turner was named as a unanimous Preseason All- selection. The Boilermakers were picked third behind 2011 champion Nebraska and Penn State, which tied Purdue and Illinois for second place in the conference a year ago. Minnesota, Illinois and Ohio State rounded out the coaches preseason rankings. For her part, Turner, the reigning Player of the Year, was one of just two unanimous preseason selections along with Penn State junior outside hitter Deja McClendon. The first team All-American led the and the Boilermakers with 4.84 kills per set and 5.46 points per set in She ranked third nationally in points and sixth in kills. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native, set a season record for hitting attempts with 1682, snapping Colleen DeMeyer s 1979 mark of Turner posted double-digit kills in 32 matches, including 20 or more nine times, and managed 17 double-doubles. Seven teams were listed in the preseason Top 25: No. 3 Penn State, No. 4 Nebraska, No. 7 Illinois, No. 9 Purdue, No. 16 Minnesota, No. 23 Michigan and No. 24 Ohio State. Michigan State received votes, but landed outside the rankings. Boilermaker foes Louisville, Cincinnati and LSU also were listed among the preseason vote getters. Mixing Youth and Experience Of the 18 players on the 2012 roster, eight are entering their fourth or fifth year with the team. Redshirt senior Amanda Miller is going into her fifth year, while seniors Anna Drewry, Courtney Gosewisch and Ariel Turner and redshirt juniors Carly Cramer, Rachel Davis, Katie Griffin and Catherine Rebarchak are entering the fourth season as Boilermakers. On the other end of the spectrum, Purdue has added six newcomers to the mix in Freshmen Faye Adelaja, Annie Drews, Sam Epenesa, Amanda Neill, Bridget Powell and Kate Workman make up the group, which was ranked as the 13th-best recruiting class in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com. Recognized Rookies In addition to being collectively ranked as the 13th-best class in the nation, the Boilermaker rookies drew individual acclaim in Annie Drews, Sam Epensesa and Kate Workman all were AVCA/Under Armour High School All-Americans for Drews was a first team selection, Epenesa garnered second team acclaim and Workman was an honorable mention recipient. Bridget Powell and Amanda Neill both were named to the All-America Watch List prior to their senior seasons. Neill went on to be the Journal and Courier s Big School Player of the Year after earning her third straight all-conference honor, while Powell garnered her third-straight all-conference Boilermaker Volleyball Game Notes

5 honor. Faye Adelaja was one of Prep Volleyball s 250 Senior Aces, and also garnered all-state, academic all-state and three all-district honors in her career. Epenesa was listed as the No. 33 player among PrepVolleyball s Senior Aces. Drews and Epenesa were named as Fab 50 selections by Volleyball Magazine. Staff Additions Boilermaker fans will recognize a familiar face on the Purdue sidelines in 2012 as middle hitter Tiffany Fisher joins the coaching staff as a student assistant. An honorable mention All-America and unanimous All- selection as a senior, Fisher ranked 10th nationally in hitting percentage with a.394 effort. She finished her playing career in third on the Purdue hitting percentage list (.322) and ninth in block assists (322). Jason Yhost, an All-MIVA performer at IPFW, is in his first year as a volunteer assistant coach with the Boilermakers after spending the season playing professional volleyball in Austria. Yhost played opposite hitter for Supervolley Enns Oberosterreich in Austria last year, following his career with the Mastodons, which ended in New Digs As part of the $99 million Mackey Arena project, a volleyball lockerroom suite, featuring a kitchen, living room and study area; a film breakdown area, and coaches lockerroom and lounge were added adjacent to Holloway Gymnasium. Previously, the team utilized facilities located on the lower level of Mackey Arena. Under his watch, the program has become part of an elite group nationally. Purdue is one of 12 schools nationally to make seven NCAA appearances in the last eight seasons, advancing to at least the second round each time. In addition, the Boilermakers have made five Sweet 16 berths in the last seven seasons, making the program one of just nine in the nation that can boast the accomplishment. Under Shondell, Purdue has posted five 20-win seasons, including 29 victories in 2011, the program s highest total since 1985, and defeated 30 ranked foes. In 2011, the Boilermakers finished second in the, its best conference placing since Shondell has coached four All-Americans and two Academic All-Americans. His charges also have earned 15 All-Big Ten and 55 Academic All- accolades. Aiding Shondell in leading Purdue are assistant coaches Kathy Jewell and John Shondell. The trio are the longest tenured complete staff in the Conference. Small Screen Queens The Boilermakers are slated to make six television appearances in 2012, including three on Belin Court in Holloway Gymnasium. The Network will air the team s Saturday, Sept. 29 home match vs. Illinois. 6 Looking To The Future Purdue University has been selected as one four NCAA Volleyball Regional host sites for the 2012 season, the NCAA Division I Women s Volleyball committee announced June 25, The Boilermaker program, which has made five Sweet 16 appearances in the last seven years, will play host to its first NCAA Regional event since the field expanded to 64 teams in Purdue was selected along with the University of California, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Texas at Austin as the four Regional sites. Giant Slayers Up until Oct. 8, 2010, Purdue had not beaten a Top 5 ranked opponent in 37 tries. On that date, the Boilermakers toppled No. 4 Penn State, snapping a 42-match skid against the Nittany Lions. Purdue followed that win up with a sweep of No. 1 Florida on Dec. 10 to earn its spot in the Elite Eight. The Boilermakers added two more historic wins in 2011, taking down No. 5 Illinois on Nov. 2 and No. 2 Nebraska on Nov. 12. Under coach Dave Shondell, Purdue has defeated 30 ranked opponents, including seven in 2011, and eight ranked in the Top10. Among The Nation The Boilermakers ranked among the top 50 nationally in three statistical categories. With a 29-5 record, Purdue ranked seventh in winning percentage (.853). The Boilermakers also were 15th in blocks per set (2.75) and 20th in hitting percentage (.260). The team also ranks 56th in kills per set (13.72) and 62nd in assists per set (12.64). Individually, junior outside hitter Ariel Turner ranks third in points per set (5.46) and sixth in kills per set (4.84). Senior middle blocker Tiffany Fisher ranks 10th nationally in hitting percentage with a.394 effort. Redshirt sophomore setter Rachel Davis ranks 42nd in assists per set (10.94). Freshman middle Kierra Jones ranks 44th in blocks per set (1.22). Rewriting the Record Books The Boilermakers made a dent in the season and career record books in The team ranked fifth in season hitting percentage (.260), seventh in block assists (511), and 10th in digs (1933). Junior Ariel Turner snapped Colleen DeMeyer s 32-year old record for hitting attempts in a season (1512) with 1682 swings in Turner posted 586 kills on those swings, ranking second in second kills (586) and kills per set (4.84). Entering her final season, Turner ranks third in career hitting attempts (3,956) and 10th in career kills (1351). Blair Bashen broke into the season Top 10 for digs, ranking ninth with 487. She also finished her career third in digs per set (3.21) and seventh in digs (1265). Tiffany Fisher moved into the career Top 10 in block assists, ranking ninth with 322. Top Of The Conference Purdue was well represented when the All- honors were announced on Nov. 29, picking up some historic awards, including Player and Coach of the Year accolades. Junior outside hitter Ariel Turner became Purdue s first Player of the Year selection since 1985 (Marianne Smith). Head coach Dave Shondell was tabbed as Coach of the Year by both the media and the league s coaches, marking Purdue s first Coach of the Year selection since Hall of Famer Carol Dewey (1982, 1985, 1987). Turner and senior middle blocker Tiffany Fisher were named as unanimous All- selections, marking the first time Purdue has boasted two first team selections since Debbie McDonald and Linda Reichl in The selections are the 49th and 50th in program history. The pair follows All-American setter Jaclyn Hart and All-America middle blocker Stephanie Lynch, who were unanimous selections in 2010 and 2008 respectively. Rookie middle blocker Kierra Jones was named to the seven-person all-freshman team as well. Jones accolade is the third straight for the Boilermakers, following Turner in 2009 and Catherine Rebarchak in 2010, and makes her the eighth Boilermaker rookie to earn the honor since Turner was a five-time Player of the Week honoree in 2011 while Jones was a three-time Freshman of the Week and two-time Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week recipient. Turner Domination Outside hitter Ariel Turner wrapped up nearly every possible honor in The first team AVCA All-American and second team Academic All- America honoree became Purdue volleyball s first dual athletic and academic All-America selection since The Player of the Year ranked in the top six nationally in kills per set (6th, 4.84) and points per set (3rd, 5.46), while leading the in both categories in The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native was named Player of the Week a league record-tying five times in 2011, while also earning her second Academic All-Big Ten honor. Her five Player of the Week accolades are the most by any one Boilermaker in a season, topping Stephanie Lynch s tally of four from the 2008 season (2 POW, 2 Defensive POW). Turner, who also has been a part of the USA Volleyball National A2 Program for the last two years, set a Purdue season record for hitting attempts in 2011 and also ranked second on the list for kills (586) and kills per set.
