Entering week two of the Big Ten schedule, the Hoosiers (12-4, 1-1) are coming off a win over No. 16 Michigan State Saturday night while the Boilermakers (9-4, 1-1) are receiving 67 votes in the most recent poll and sit just three slots out of the top-25. Indiana is also scheduled to play No. 8 Minnesota (11-3, 2-0) Sunday afternoon at home. That match is slated for a 1 p.m. start inside University Gym. The Big Ten Network will be in the house Wednesay night, broadcasting the Purdue match live. Brent Stover (play-by-play) and Elizabeth Moreau (color commentary) will be on hand to call all the action. As with all IU Volleyball matches this season, fans can also follow along online via live audio broadcast provided by IUHoosiers.com, free of charge. Jeremy Gray is set to broadcast both matches this week. 2 CRIMSON AND GOLD CUP Wednesday s volleyball match is the first meeting between IU and Purdue during season in any sport and will determine the early leader of the Smithville Crimson and Gold Cup. This marks the sixth edition of the Crimson and Gold Cup, a title which signifies athletic supremacy between the rival schools. It pits the 20 common sports sponsored by both institutions against each other, rewarding one point for each sport. With volleyball meeting twice a year, each match is worth one half point in the Crimson and Gold Cup standings. Indiana owns a lead in the all-time series. MONON SPIKE DRESS REHEARSAL Though this week s IU-Purdue showdown is worht a half point in the Crimson and Gold Cup standings, the victor of the Nov. 4 battle in Bloomington later this season takes ownership of the Monon Spike. The Monon Spike was created in 1981 and has grown to be as important as football s Old Oaken Bucket in symbolizing the rivalry between Indiana and Purdue. A pair of Purdue players set out to create something that would not only represent the competition on the court but also showcase the rich tradition of the state of Indiana. They chose the Spike from the Monon Railroad, which orginated in Indiana in the late 19th century. It was taken from a portion of the track near Indianapolis, marking the halfway point between Bloomington and West Lafayette. As is traditionally down with its sister trophy, the Old Oaken Bucket, an I or P link is added to the chain annually to signify the victor of that season s showcase. SATURDAY SUCCESS The Indiana Hoosiers are red-hot on Saturdays, remaining undefeated with an 9-0 record. IU won a pair of Saturday matches in each of the first four weekends before defeating #16 Michigan State last weekend. Indiana s next Saturday match does not come until Oct. 10th when the Hoosiers head to Champaign, Ill., to take on the Fightin Illini. THE NUMBERS DON T LIE Five different Hoosiers can be found in the Big Ten s statistical rankings top-10. Ashley Benson s.415 hitting efficiency is the fourth best in the conference (9th in the nation); and she ranks seventh with 1.16 blocks per set. Caitlin Cox has propelled herself into the conference s top-five for digs, averaging 3.91 digs per set. In addition, Benson and Haverly are also slotted in the top-10 for points per set; coming in at seventh and 10th, respectively. BLOCK BRIGADE Coach Dunbar and Coach Gustin, both middle blockers during their collegiate careers, have the 2009 Hoosiers amongst the nation s elite in terms of blocking through the first five weeks of the season. Indiana s 2.69 stuffs per set average is the 19th highest in the country. I AM THE GREATEST Benson can currently say she is the greatest attacker ever at IU in terms of hitting effieincy. She entered the season just.02 percentage points behind Diane Hoereth ( ) for the all-time mark, but her hot start has rocketed her to the top spot with a career clip of.315. DOUBLE DOWN Freshman Jordan Haverly has recorded four double-doubles already this season, doing so by compiling double-digit kills offensively and digging 10 or more balls in the defensive backcourt. Five other Hoosiers have also tallied a doubled-double this year: Mary Chaudoin, (assists/digs) Whitney Granado (assists/digs), Kelsey Hall (kills/digs), Kelci Marschall (kills/ digs) and Taylor Wittmer (kills/blocks). Chaudoin and Wittmer have also each come extremely close to pulling off the very rare volleyball triple-double. Chaudoin came up just one kill and one dig shy of doing so against Missouri State while Wittmer s double-double vs. UT Martin was two digs shy of converting to the triple-double. TEAM TITLE #2 The Hoosiers marched into Athens, Ohio for the Hampton Inn Invitational and walked out with their second tournament title of the season and four wins, including three victories over teams that advanced to the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Caitlin Cox and her 88 digs during that weekend earned MVP honors. Ashley Benson, Kelsey Hall and Jordan Haverly joined Cox on the alltourney team. HOUSTON, WE HAVE NO PROBLEMS Indiana began the 2009 season with a bang, winning the Flo Hyman Invitational hosted by the University of Houston. The Hoosiers cruised through the weekend, dropping just one set in three matches.

HERE S SOMETHING FROM MARY Sophomore setter Mary Chaudoin will be the host of her very own weekly video blog during the 2009 season. The Here s Something From Mary video blog will run throughout the season with a new episode posted every Monday, taking IU fans inside the world of IU Volleyball. NON-CONFERENCE CHALLENGES The Hoosiers quest for postseason play began with four preseason tournaments, pitting Indiana against 14 non-conference opponents. Indiana faced some quality competition during the first four weeks with six NCAA qualifiers from a year ago on the docket. TWO-SPORT STAR Whitney Thomas will return to the court for a fifth year this upcoming season... the volleyball court that is. Thomas is taking advantage of an NCAA rule which affords student-athletes a fifth year of eligibility to play one season of a different sport. On the basketball court, Thomas put together one of the finest careers in Indiana Women s Basketball history. The Bloomington, Ind., native became just the second player in school history to reach 1,000 career points and rebounds; and the only player to ever hit the double millennium mark while also compiling 200 steals. Her 237 career swipes rank second all-time in IU lore. Thomas graduated from IU in May, but has enrolled in graduate school and will pursue her master s degree while playing right-side hitter for the volleyball team this fall. As a two-sport standout at Bloomington North High School, Thomas was heavily recruited by several bigtime volleyball programs coming out of high school before ultimately choosing to play hoops for the Hoosiers. HOOSIER HYSTERIA Indiana Volleyball is set to kick-start the Hoosier Hysteria festivities once again in Last season, IU Volleyball entertained the Hoosier faithful packed into Assembly Hall with a 3-1 win over Ohio State.
