The Wolverines (4-2) will play the Big East s Syracuse Monday at 1 p.m. and BYU-Hawai i Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Labor Day matinee with the Orange will be televised locally on UVU-TV with Kevin Kassel and Steve Vail on the call. Live video will be streamed online for both matches at UVU.edu/UVUTV and live stats will also be available at WolverineGreen.com. UVU started the La Quinta Inn and Suites Invitational last weekend with a 3-0 loss to No. 24 Michigan but in the third set of that match it took the Big 10 Wolverines extra points to put UVU away. The Wolverines carried their momentum over to Saturday where they defeated Cal Poly 3-2 and Santa Clara 3-1. Campbell finished with an even 100 assists for the weekend while Kuresa had 29 kills and hit.353. The reigning Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Week Sarah Clement also had a big weekend for UVU as she put up nine blocks against Santa Clara and totaled 19 for the weekend. Lindsay Barker also played well by picking up 30 kills for the weekend which included a career-high 15 against Cal Poly. About Syracuse Orange Syracuse will play its fourth match in the state of Utah Monday against UVU after it went 2-1 at Utah State s tournament this past weekend. There the Orange defeated Idaho State and Texas State but fell to the Aggies. Syracuse is 5-1 on the year and was selected to finish ninth out of 15 teams in the Big East. The Orange are led offensively by preseason - 1

2 All-Big East selection Noemie Lefebvre and her team-high 83 kills and 3.95 kill per set average. About BYU-Hawai i BYU-Hawai i will play UVU Tuesday for the first time since the 2008 season in Hawai i. The Div. II Seasiders currently are currently 3-0 this year and are coming off of a big win at Weber State on Saturday. BYU-Hawai i also has wins over Alaska- Anchorage and Alaska-Fairbanks this season. The Seasiders are led this year by Shih Ting Chen and her team-high 52 kills and 4.33 kill per set average. The all-time series between the two is currently tied at 1-1. Next up for the Wolverines UVU will hit the road for the first time in the 2011 season when it plays at the Air Force Invitational Sept There the Wolverines will face Air Force, Northern Arizona and South Carolina Upstate. Atoa s 13th Season UVU head coach Sam Atoa enters his 13th season at the helm of Wolverine volleyball this season. During Atoa s tenure he has posted a overall record, including a mark in eight NCAA Division I seasons. Atoa led his Wolverines to back-to-back NCAA DI Indenpendent Championships in 2007 and 2008 and in the JC days led UVU to two trips to Nationals as the Wolverines placed third in the nation in 2000 and sixth in After two straight second place finishes in the Great West (in 2009 and 2010), Atoa is now striving to lead his Wolverines to a Great West title in The Seven Newcomers are... Coach Atoa has filled out his roster this season with four seniors, one junior, four sophomores and seven freshmen. And seven of those players will play their first season in a Wolverine uniform. Six of those newcomers are freshman and one is a transfer from North Texas -- in So., OH/MB - Katie Fritzler (Sterling, Colo.). Life Without Doxey and the 2010 Seniors With departing 2010 senior Kayli Doxey and the 2010 seniors gone UVU will have to look to others to step up and fill the void left on the court. Doxey was the 2009 GWC Offensive Player of the Year and finished her four-year career by shattering multiple school records incling the most all-time kills with Atoa 2011 squad will have to find some new go-to hitters to be successful. Married Wolverines Two players are married on UVU s 2011 team: Sr., S, Rachel Anderson and Sr., OH, Chelsey Heaps. Anderson s maiden name is Glassford while Heaps is Garfield. UVU Looking for First GWC Championship Utah Valley University has finished second in conference the past two seasons behind North Dakota and was recently picked to finished second in the Great West preseason coaches poll again. The Wolverines will have to rely on their eight returning letterwinners if they want to break the trend and finish atop the Great West Conference for the first time in Wolverines Picked to Finish 2nd in GWC The Great West Conference volleyball coaches have chosen Utah Valley to finish second in the annual preseason poll. Two-time defending champion North Dakota just edged out the Wolverines as the favorite to win the 2011 GWC volleyball title. UND finished with five first-place votes and a total of 35 points in the preseason rankings, while two-time runner-up Utah Valley came in second in the poll with 31 points and the only other first-place vote. 1. Division I Becomes Official The UVU athletics department was notified on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 by NCAA Membership Services of its unanimous approval to lift the school s provisional status and accept it as an official member of NCAA Division I. The move completes the University s unprecedented move straight from NJCAA to NCAA athletics. Full membership now permits all of UVU s athletic teams and individual athletes to be eligible for NCAA postseason events. UVU s seven-year provisional period began with an exploratory year in , its final season in junior college athletics. In , teams began competing with partial Div. I schedules and a year later all of UVU s teams were competing with full Div. I slates. UVU also dropped the word State from its name in July 2008 when it officially became Utah Valley University. I Record Record Conference Record (Finish) 9-3 (2nd) Letterwinners Returning/Lost 8/4 Starters Returning/Lost 4/3 Newcomers 7 Head Coach Sam Atoa The 2011 season marks Sam Atoa s 13th year as the head coach at Utah Valley University. During his tenure, the Wolverines have posted a overall record, including a mark in eight NCAA Division I seasons. In 2009, Atoa led his club to its best Division I season to date as his team won a school-record 22 games and finished overall. He also led UVU to a second place finish in its inaugural year of Great West Conference play, as his team finished second in both regular season with a 10-2 record and at the GWC Tournament. Not only did his Wolverines excel in conference but also against Division I powerhouses as Atoa led his team to its first-ever win over a nationally-ranked opponent as UVU defeated the #17 ranked Utah Utes, for the first time, at home by a score of 3-1. This past season (2010) Atoa once again led his Wolverines to a 20-plus win season as they finished with an impressive overall record. His team once again finished atop the Great West as well, as they went 9-3 which was good enough for second place. Atoa also led his team to a very successful NCAA season in 2007 as the Wolverines put up 21 wins (which was a school-record at that time) while winning their second consecutive Division I Independent Championship. For the success, Atoa was named the Independent Coach of the Year for the second time as UVU swept all four major year-end Independent awards. Utah Valley breezed through the 2007 Independent Championship under Atoa, sweeping each of its three opponents en route to its second title in three seasons. The 2007 campaign marked the third consecutive season that an Atoa-coached player was named the Independent Setter of the Year. Kristi Lindley received that honor after current assistant Lacee Koelliker won the award in both 2005 and assistant to former head coach Lori Richards. In his first season at the helm of the UV volleyball program Atoa led the Wolverines to a record. UV just missed a trip to the national tournament with a tight, five-set loss in the district championship. Then, in just his second season at the helm, Atoa led UV to the national tournament and a third-place finish in the nation. The third-place finish equaled UV s best showing ever at nationals. Atoa was named Tachikara/AVCA Junior College National Coach of the Year and Region 18 Coach of the Year. In 2002, Atoa led the Wolverines to a sixth-place finish at nationals. In May 2010, Atoa was able to take his volleyball team on a venture to his homeland of Samoa and also New Zealand. The idea came to Atoa after a devastating tsunami struck his home country in the fall of 2009 and Atoa knew that he had to do something to help. Prior to the trip, Atoa and his team collected thousands of items like medical supplies, hygiene kits, furniture, sporting goods and clothing in Utah and had them shipped to Samoa. When the team arrived they were able to deliver those items to help the people in need. On the trip, Atoa led his team on a journey filled with service where they visited schools, hospitals, elderly care centers and focused to help aid the hardest hit areas of the tsunami. While on the trip, Atoa also took his team on a tour of New Zealand for seven days. There his Wolverines provided service too by visiting a children s hospital. Atoa played volleyball for Brigham Young University from 1984 to 1988, and helped led the Cougars to three consecutive National Collegiate Club Championships. In 1989, Atoa started his coaching career at BYU assisting Coach Carl McGown when the program was officially sanctioned as an NCAA sport. In 1990, Atoa accepted a supervisor position in the Intramural program at Utah Valley and traveled back and forth between both schools for a year to fulfill his obligations. In 1991 Atoa accepted the position to be the women s volleyball coach at Utah Valley. In 1993 he accepted the position to be the Intramural Director and remained in that position until 2001 while still coaching. University Parkway Orem, Utah Atoa s spikers finished in 2006, following up a school record season and a Division I Independent Championship in During that Independent Championship season, UVU won 10 of its last 11 matches and Atoa was named the Division I Independent Coach of the Year. In their second season as a Division I program in 2004 the Wolverines finished with an record that included wins over Memphis, Central Florida, Montana, Portland State, and Boise State. As well as two wins each over fellow Div. I Independent teams: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas-Pan American. In the first year of Division I competition in 2003, Atoa led the Wolverine volleyball program to a record, including wins over Div. I opponents Boise State and Pac-10 power Washington State. Atoa took over the reins of the UV volleyball program in 1999 after six years as an Atoa was born and raised in Pesega, Samoa, and has a rich cultural and athletic background. He is highly honored and respected in his country, having received the Papalii or Son of the King title from the late Head of State of Samoa, His Highness Malietoa Tanumafili II. Atoa went to high school at the Church College of Western Samoa and graduated with high honors. After graduating from high school, Atoa went to BYU-Hawaii and played volleyball for two years. He earned his way through school by entertaining and dancing at the Polynesian Cultural Center. In 1982 he served an LDS Church Mission in the California San Jose Mission. Following his mission, he moved to Provo and attended BYU where and earned a spot on the club team that went on to attain national prominence. Atoa and his wife, Lori, reside in Orem and are the parents of six children: Sam, Bradley, Devri, Andrew, Darci and Saini.

5 2011 UVU Volleyball Season Preview After finishing second in the Great West Conference for the past two years, the Utah Valley University women s volleyball team has its sights set on winning its first conference title in We want to win the conference, 13th year UVU head coach Sam Atoa said. We want to win the regular season and the conference tournament. That is a goal that we have fallen short of the last couple of years. Hopefully we will have another good year, however we need to be able to finish at the end of the season. You have to have good leaders to succeed and I feel that all of our seniors will be looked upon as leaders on the court. Whether it is the captains or whether it is the upperclassmen they need to be positive role models for our new kids because they are our future. Despite losing four, four-year standouts to graduation last year -- one of which that includes multiple school record holder Kayli Doxey -- Atoa is hopeful that his mix of veterans and newcomers can get the job done in The past is the past, and Kayli and the other seniors did a wonderful job for us. However this year we have a different dynamic and a different group of kids. I m encouraged with how we are looking and how things are coming together. We don t look back; we look forward with what we are going to do and with whom we have now. In all Atoa welcomes back eight letterwinners, four of which who were starters a year ago. He also has added seven talented newcomers to mix into the fold as well. We have a large group of freshmen coming in and I have been impressed with every single one of them. They are playing very well right now and I really like the energy and effort that they are putting in. They have all looked better than I expected and as time goes on I think the chemistry will just keep getting better. This season UVU will suit up four seniors in Rachel Anderson (S), Sarah Clement (MB), Chelsey Heaps (OH) and Jaicee Kuresa (OH/ RS). Atoa recently appointed Anderson and Heaps as team captains and will look for their experience along with all of the seniors and their leadership to lead their teammates on the court. The seven newcomers to join the Wolverine volleyball squad in 2011 are sophomore-transfer Katie Fritzler (OH/MB) and freshmen Jaramey Barney (MB), Erin Jolley (DS/OH), Kalani Norris (OH), McKenna Tait (L/DS), Kaysie Taylor (OH/RS) and Cassie Wahlin (S/RS). UVU will begin the season by hosting two tournaments at the Activity Center this weekend (Aug ) and next weekend (Sept. 2-3). In all the Wolverines will have nine home matches in the first two weeks of the season.
