As a team, Idaho currently ranks No. 1 for blocks per set (3.10) and No. 89 for aces per set (1.44). Idaho plays seven of its last nine matches at home. Idaho is the only Western Athletic Conference team which has not yet lost at home. Idaho set a school record with 39 block assists at Utah State. The Idaho volleyball program earned its 650th victory with a 3-0 win at Nevada (Oct. 17). The 1,701 fans in attendance at Idaho s home-opening win over Fresno State (Oct.3) were the fourth-most in Idaho history. Idaho has not been swept this season by an unranked team. Idaho s win at San Jose State broke a six-match losing streak and was the first time the Vandals had won a Western Athletic Conference opener on the road. Sarah Conwell has totaled 10 or more digs in seven of the last nine matches. Meredith Rice opened the season with at least one service ace in seven-consecutive matches. Cassie Hamilton has nine services aces in the last four matches. Sarah Conwell has earned WAC Player of the Week twice this season. She earned the honor for the week of Aug Sept. 6 and again for the week of Oct. 5 - Oct. 11. Anna McKinney currently is No. 6 on Idaho s all-time list for career block assists with 384. The No. 5 total is 390 and No. 4 is 396. Debbie Pederson currently is No. 9 on Idaho s all-time list for career block assists wih 349. The No. 8 total is 378. Debbie Pederson tied for No. 4 on Idaho s all-time records list with 11 block assists at Boise State. Anna McKinney tied for No. 4 on Idaho s all-time records list with 11 block assists at Utah State. Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan currently holds 143 career victories. As a team, the Vandals tied for No. 7 on the Idaho all-time records list with 32 block assists at Washington State. Anna McKinney was honored on the Mission Inn of Pismo Beach Invitational All-Tournament team. Sarah Conwell and Alicia Milo were honored on the Alexis Park Classic All-Tournament team. Anna McKinney and Kelsey Taylor were honored on the Crowne Plaza Titan Classic All-Tournament team. Idaho opened the season with a victory for the first time since Idaho opened the season with two-consecutive sweeps for the first time since Anna McKinney was selected to the 2009 Western Athletic Conference Preseason All-WAC team. Idaho has placed a player on the preseason team in four-consecutive seasons. Idaho was picked to finish fourth in the WAC in the preseason coaches poll. Idaho has finished.500 or better in conference play for six-consecutive seasons. 2 This Week s Opponents The nevada wolf pack Nevada enters the match with a 7-13 overall record and is fifth in the Western Athletic Conference standings with a 3-4 record. Idaho defeated Nevada at Reno 3-0 Saturday. Nevada is 0-6 on the road this season. Idaho leads the overall series and has defeated Nevada in each of the last four meetings. Nevada s last win at Moscow was in THE Utah state Aggies Utah State currently holds a 12-9 overall record and is sixth in the Western Athletic Conference standings at 3-5. Idaho defeated Utah State 3-2 on Monday at Logan, Utah. The Aggies are 3-5 on the road this season and are 0-4 in conference road matches. Utah State leads the overall series and the teams split the series in each of the last two seasons with each team winning at home. Our players have done a great job handling being on the road so much this year and now this is kind of a bonus. We get to be home, in our beds, our recovery time should be better, and the players can catch up on some school work. We play well at home so this should be a good run for us. On the last week: The players were frustrated (after the losses at Fresno State and Boise State) and we really tried to pinpoint what was going on. We played a tough schedule and learned a lot from it, but a team gains confidence by winning. When we were not winning there was a little bit of frustration happening and the players started feeling it. I feel like we got a little better this past week in the gym and made a few changes and then went on the road and played fairly well. It wasn t perfect, but we stayed in the matches and never gave up. Our fifth set vs. Utah State was one of the best we have played. On the upcoming week: It s kind of odd that we are getting ready to play the same two teams again at home. We can fix a few things when we get ready to play them. The crazy thing is we are playing teams for the second time when we haven t even faced New Mexico State yet. On momentum gained from past weekend: The players gained some personal confidence and as a team we feel like we got over a little bit of a hump. We re not where we need to be yet, but we re definitely doing the defensive things we need to. We still trying to reduce our errors and be a little more productive. One of the most unique nicknames in sports, Vandals has been the nickname for University of Idaho athletic teams for more than 80 years. Area sportswriters coined the nickname as they tried to describe the tenacity with which coach Hec Edmundson s basketball teams played defense. It first was used in 1918 strictly for the men s basketball team and officially adopted for all teams in The sports editor of the school newspaper, Lloyd Jazz McCarty, along with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, Edward Maslin Hulme, made the final push for the nickname to be adopted, both as a tribute to the intensity of the athletic teams and to the Norsemen of old. The Vandals (9-11, 5-3) used scores of 24-26, 25-21, 24-26, 25-22, and 15-9 to hand the Aggies (12-9, 3-5) just their second home loss of the season. The match saw 217 total points, lasted 2 hours, 33 minutes and was played in front of a national television audience on ESPNU. This was a battle, for sure, Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan said. Utah State is a good team and we were fortunate that we played a great match. We were strong defensively and we executed very well. Sarah Conwell finished with impressive numbers as she tallied a career-high 28 kills while hitting.299 and added 14 digs and a career-high eight blocks. Anna McKinney also tallied a double-double as she finished with 11 kills and 11 blocks and Kelsey Taylor totaled nine kills and just two errors. McKinney s 11 block assists tied for fourth all-time at Idaho and moved her into sixth on Idaho s career records list with 384. Defensively, Meredith Rice and Cassie Hamilton joined Conwell with double-digits digs. Each established new a career high as Rice totaled 28 digs and Hamilton finished with 19 digs. Taylor and Debbie Pederson each blocked six balls and Katie Tribley set a career mark with 59 assists. As a team, the Vandals set season highs with 72 kills, a 14.4 kills per set average, 67 assists, 84 digs, 20.5 blocks and 95.5 points. They held the advantage over Utah State in each category. The match saw 31 total ties and 11 lead changes. Although Idaho was playing its third match in eight days and 18th match away from home, the Vandals seemed to get stronger as Monday s match progressed and finished set five with 12 of 15 points coming from kills with only two errors for a.385 hitting percentage. Idaho 3, Nevada 0 RENO, Nev. - The University of Idaho volleyball ended a four-game road losing streak with a 3-0 sweep of Nevada in Western Athletic Conference action Saturday. The Vandals (8-11, 4-3) used scores of 25-23, 25-22, and to earn the program s 650th victory. Nevada fell to 7-13 overall and 3-4 in the WAC with the loss. We talked with the players about not forgetting who we are and that is a team who serves and blocks tough, Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan. Tonight we were in a good frame of mind and did those things. Our blocking and serving were huge parts of the match tonight and our offense followed with a good hitting night. I m proud of the players for getting it done in three because that is huge to do on the road. The Vandals found themselves behind to start the first set before charging back to take an lead. From that point the score was tied six times before Idaho pulled away from a tie with the help of two Nevada errors. Set two saw six ties and four lead changes in the early going, but the Vandals pulled ahead 8-7 and never looked back. Idaho s largest lead came at before an ace and two Sarah Conwell kills gave Idaho the victory. The Vandals opened a 7-2 lead to start the third set, but the Wolf Pack charged back to tie the score at 9-9. From that point there were seven ties and four lead changes as Nevada was able to pull ahead The Vandals then scored the next six points to move ahead and the teams traded points as Idaho held on to take set three Conwell rebounded for 17 kills to only four errors for a.371 hitting percentage. Alicia Milo added seven kills and Kelsey Taylor finished with six kills. Meredith Rice tallied eight digs while Conwell and Cassie Hamilton each totaled seven digs. Hamilton also added three service aces and Anna McKinney finished with seven blocks. As a team, the Vandals finished with season-highs for hitting percentage (.263) and kills per set (14.00).
