The Aggies host Cal State Fullerton on Thursday night, then honors the memory of a true volleyball legend with the inaugural Gary Colberg Tribute Match against UC Riverside on Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m. Colberg, who served as the campus s director of sports clubs and intramurals for more than four decades, officiated the sport on some of its most prominent stages, including two Olympic Games, two Goodwill Games, the 1994 World University Games and the 1984 NCAA Championship. He later garnered major USAVB accolades for his career, including the Dr. Harold T. Friermood and Wilbur H. Peck Referee Emeritus awards for lifetime achievement. Saturday night s match not only honors the late Colberg s legacy but also provides an opportunity to showcase Campus Recreation & Union s sports clubs program. In particular, the UC Davis men s volleyball team has provided numerous practice players and team managers, plus assistant coaches such as current mentor Bryce Williams. For head coach Dan Conners, who conceived the tribute to Colberg, this weekend s slate offers another chance for his Aggie squad to continue its upswing. After an early stumble against Long Beach on Friday, the two road wins over the weekend will help propel his team into this final stretch of the 2017 season. White captured her third Big West weekly honor thanks to her 5.89 kills per set and.389 average in the two wins. Junior Brianna Karsseboom notched a.457 average on 18 kills and just two attacking errors, while committing just one receive error in the passing unit. Another junior, middle blocker Lauren Jackson, enjoyed an efficient (.438) night at CSUN on Saturday. It set us on the right path, he said. There is still a lot of ways we can improve and grow, and we ll work on that stuff this week. Fullerton completely outplayed us at their place, and we were fortunate enough to get a win. They got their first conference win against Riverside last week and they ll be feeling good coming into this match. Then Riverside is a strong, scrappy defense team that can frustrate you. It s a team that you have to be on your game to play. CAL STATE FULLERTON (5-18, 1-8) snapped its 12-match losing skid with a Big West win over UC Riverside on Saturday. Junior outside hitter Madeline Schneider, who enjoyed a season-best 26 kills against the Aggies two weeks earlier, hit (.310) in the victory over the Highlanders. UC RIVERSIDE (9-12, 1-8) was led by redshirt freshman libero Nicole Rodriguez, who notched 19 digs; and junior setter Chelsea Doyle, who moved into fifth place on the school s all-time assists leaderboard. The first shifted the momentum in UC Davis favor, while the second proved crucial with a final score... Junior libero Malia Bolko continues to lead the Big West Conference in digs (4.99) while junior MBs Kelechi Ohiri and Lauren Jackson are 4th and 5th in blocks at 0.99 and 0.98, respectively.
