On Sept. 6, 2013 he became the winningest coach in NCAA Division I women s volleyball history when his team beat Santa Clara to earned his 1,107th win. Last season, he guided UH to its 18th straight conference title and 31st trip to the NCAA Tournament. He also won his 1,100th career match and was named Big West Co-Coach of the Year and AVCA All-Region Coach of the Year. On October 17, 2009, Shoji reached the 1,000-win milestone with a victory over New Mexico State, becoming just the second coach in NCAA Division I history to reach the prestigious mark. That same year, he was inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame. Shoji currently has a total of 1,108 career wins. The honors have piled up for Shoji over the years. He is an 12-time conference and 10-time region Coach of the Year, and was named the national Coach of the Year in 1982 and in Shoji was named to the list of all-time great coaches by USA Volleyball in He has also been inducted into the Hawai i Sports Hall of Fame and was named coach of the NCAA 25th Anniversary team. Under Shoji, UH volleyball finished in the Top 10 in 24 of the 30 final AVCA polls, and ranked in the top five 16 times. It was their second win over a Top 10 opponent with the other coming against then-no. 1 and current No. 2 Texas on opening night. Quest For 1,107 - The hashtag #Quest- For1107 is no more, as head coach Dave Shoji reached his 1,107th win this past week, breaking the record for the most coaching wins in NCAA Division I women s volleyball history. The Bows swept Santa Clara on Friday night for the momentous win. Shoji passed legendary and retired UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski, who was in attendance to congratulate Shoji in a fun-filled postgame celebration. Also in attendance was Hawai i governor Neil Abercrombie and interim UH system president David Lassner. Statistically Speaking - The NCAA statistical rankings came out on Monday and, through six matches, the Bows have been one of the most efficient hitting teams in the nation. They rank eighth nationally in hitting percentage (.317) with sophomore Jade Vorster the most impressive Bow in that category. She ranks second in the nation with a.580 clip. UH also ranks 22nd in kills per set (14.50) with Emily Hartong ranked eighth nationally (5.00 k/s). Versus The Vikings - UH is a perfect 9-0 against Portland State in their alltime series. The two teams last played in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament in Seattle where Hawai i swept the Vikings in convincing fashion. Freshmen Emily Hartong, Kaela Goodman, and Mita Uiato all saw action in that match with Hartong posting four kills and three blocks. UH then went on to fall in straight sets to host Washington. Facing Northwestern - UH is 4-0 against Northwestern in their brief history. The most recent victory came in 2006 at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Volleyball Challenge where the Bows won in four sets. Assessing Arizona - The Bows have won all 11 matches against Arizona including their lone postseason contest on UH s way to its fourth national title in In their most recent meeting, UH swept Arizona in the final match of the 2011 Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational. Croson Left Home - Former Rainbow Wahine and highly celebrated player Jane Croson transferred to Arizona this past summer but will not be making the trip with the team (coaches decision). Croson has played in all but one set this season, ranking second on the team in kills (65) and first in digs per set (3.00). Dropping A Spot - Despite three wins this past week including a sweep of then -No. 10 UCLA, the Bows fell one spot in the AVCA national poll to No. 10. Despite the drop, the results around the nation are working favorably for UH. Texas, whom Hawai i beat on opening night, is 4-1 and ranked second (14 1st-place votes) on the heels of a win last week over then-no.1 Penn State. UH s only loss was to San Diego (4-1) who cracked the top 10 last week and even received a 1st-place vote. Rousing Support -In six matches, Hawai i has posted an overall attendance of 47,040 which averages to 7,840 per match. This season the turnstile attendance has been in excess of 9,500 on two occasions (Texas and UCLA).
