Promotions And Giveaways Thursday s match sponsor American Savings Bank will be giving out 500 stress balls to fans entering the Stan Sheriff Center. American Savings Bank will also work the prize wheel one-hour prior to the start of the match and throughout the night. On Friday night, match sponsor California Hotel and Casino will be holding a Toss your way to Las Vegas game in between sets two and three, with the prize a trip to Las Vegas on a Vacations Hawai i charter package with four nights at the California Hotel and Casino. Countdown To 1,000 Head Coach Dave Shoji is just three wins away from reaching the 1,000 coaching victories milestone. Shoji has 997 in his career and is looking to become just the second head coach in NCAA Division I women s volleyball history to reach the milestone. Danielson Earns Third WAC Player Of The Week Honor Sophomore outside hitter Kanani Danielson has been named WAC Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 28-Oct. 4. It s the third WAC Player of the Week honor of the season for Danielson and the fourth of her career. The sophomore outside hitter averaged 4.00 kills on.379 hitting, 4.64 points, 1.71 digs and 0.43 service aces in a pair of wins last week. In a sweep of Louisiana Tech, Danielson recorded a career-high three service aces. She then posted a matchhigh 21 kills at New Mexico State to lead the Rainbow Wahine to the win, making them the only remaining undefeated team in WAC play. In a pivotal third set against the Aggies, with UH trailing 22-21, Danielson recorded the final four points of the set with three straight kills and a solo block to help UH win the set The team then cruised to a victory in the fourth and final set. Danielson Records 21 Kills Kanani Danielson had 21 kills at New Mexico State, one shy of her career-high on Oct. 3. Danielson finished the match with 21 kills on 41 attempts and five errors, hitting.390. Danielson had five kills and five errors on 12 swings after the first set. The next three sets, she had 16 kills on 29 swings and no errors. UH Picks Up First Two Road Wins The Rainbow Wahine traveled off island for the first time this season and came away with two road wins. UH played its first 13 matches at home, before taking a twomatch road trip for WAC play. UH beat Louisiana Tech 3-0 on Oct. 1 and New Mexico State 3-1 on Oct. 3. Rainbow Wahine Record 12 Blocks For the second time this season, UH has recorded 12 blocks as a team. The Rainbow Wahine had 12 blocks against New Mexico State on Oct. 3. The 12 blocks are the second most this season, behind 14 blocks against Santa Clara on Aug. 29. UH also recorded 12 blocks against Pepperdine on Sept. 18. Mafua Sets The Way In two matches against Boise State and Idaho, junior setter Dani Mafua set the offense to a.399 hitting percentage and tied a couple career highs along the way. Mafua tied a career-high with four kills against Idaho on Sept. 26, hitting a perfect on four attempts and tied a career-high with five blocks in the match. To open WAC play, Ka aihue had 16 digs against Boise State in three sets Sept. 24 and 17 digs against Idaho on Sept. 26 in three sets. Ka aihue added nine digs against Louisiana Tech on Oct. 1 and 15 digs at New Mexico State on Oct. 3. Over the last six matches, Ka aihue has recorded 17 digs against Pepperdine on Sept. 18 and 14 digs against the Waves on Sept. 19. She has 88 digs in her last 19 sets played. Forsythe Coming On Sophomore transfer middle Alexis Forsythe is coming along for the Rainbow Wahine. In limited time against Boise State and Idaho, Forsythe came in and recorded five kills against Boise State on Sept. 24 and recorded another five kills against Idaho on Sept. 26. Forsythe recorded five kills both nights by just playing in the third set. Against Louisiana Tech, for the third straight match, Forsythe came in the third set and recorded another five kills. She also had three blocks in the third set as she hit against Louisiana Tech on Oct. 1. Mixing It Up Against Boise State on Sept. 24, the Rainbow Wahine had a different starting lineup for the first time this season. Without sophomore outside hitter Kanani Danielson, sophomore Corinne Cascioppo made her first start of her career. Cascioppo had two kills, two digs and three blocks in the match. UH Ranked No. 4 In AVCA Poll; No. 4 In Volleyball Magazine The Rainbow Wahine remained No. 4 in this week s AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll and Volleyball Magazine Poll. Hawai i has enjoyed a successful run of 257-consecutive weeks in the AVCA Coaches Poll. Hawai i also has appeared in 386 of the 390 (.989) polls all-time. UH is third in poll appearances, behind only Nebraska and Stanford, who have both appeared in all 390 polls. Hawai i also ranks third to Stanford and Nebraska in weeks ranked in the top 10 (296) and rank third to Nebraska and UCLA in weeks ranked at No. 1 (48). In its 48 weeks as the No. 1 team in the country, UH boasts a (.923) record. Eight Straight 3-0 Wins The Rainbow Wahine won eight straight matches by a 3-0 score, ending last week against New Mexico State, when UH won in four sets. UH started the streak against Weber State on Sept. 10, and have beat No. 10 Stanford and No. 25 Pepperdine (twice) by the score of 3-0. On the season, UH has won 10 matches overall by a 3-0 score. National Ranks As a team the Rainbow Wahine rank fourth in the country in hitting percentage at.306 overall, rank 15th in kills per set, averaging 14.1 and rank 22nd in assists per set at Individually, Brittany Hewitt ranks 10th in the nation in blocks per set at 1.48 and Amber Kaufman ranks seventh in hitting percentage at.428 on the year. Dani Mafua ranks 14th in assists per set at and Aneli Cubi-Otineru ranks 11th in aces per set at Cubi-Otineru Named WAC Player Of The Week Senior outside hitter Aneli Cubi-Otineru was named WAC Player of the Week for the week of Sept It was the first-ever WAC Player of the Week honor for Cubi- Otineru. The senior tallied 18 kills, 20 digs, five blocks and three service aces in backto-back sweeps of No. 25 Pepperdine. Cubi-Otineru averaged 3.00 kills, 3.33 digs, 0.83 blocks and 0.50 service aces to lead the Rainbow Wahine to their fourth and fifth straight victories. In the second match, she was one kill shy of a double-double, finishing with nine kills and 12 digs. UH Records Program s 1,000th Win UH s victory over Stanford on Sept. 12 was the program s 1,000th victory since playing a Division I schedule in The Rainbow Wahine have won four national titles in that span and participated in 27 NCAA Tournaments. Sophomore Kanani Danielson was named Most Outstanding Player, her second MOP award this year. Danielson averaged 3.78 kills and 2.11 digs per set and hit.466 over the three matches. Senior Amber Kaufman earned her first all-tournament team selection this year and the second of her career. Kaufman hit. 590 over the three matches and averaged 3.25 kills per set. Dani Mafua earned her second all-tournament team selection, averaging assists, 1.33 digs and 1.11 blocks per set. Strong Hitting Performance The Rainbow Wahine had their best hitting performance of the year in the Honolulu Advertiser Volleyball Challenge. UH hit.422 over the three matches, including hitting a season-high.500 against UT-San Antonio. UH s second highest hitting percentage of the year came against No. 10 Stanford, when UH hit.392 for the match, including 51 kills in three sets. On the year, UH is hitting.301, averaging kills per set. Kaufman Ties Career High Senior Amber Kaufman tied a career-high with 13 kills against No. 10 Stanford. Kaufman tied her career-high earlier this season with 13 kills against No. 25 Santa Clara in the second match of the year. Against Stanford on Sept. 12, Kaufman had 13 kills on 17 attempts and just one error, hitting.706 in the match. Over three matches in the tournament, Kaufman hit.590 and had 26 kills, averaging 3.25 kills per set. Danielson Hits For Career-High Kanani Danielson had a near perfect hitting night against UT-San Antonio on Sept. 11 during the second match of the Honolulu Advertiser Volleyball Challenge. Danielson had 10 kills on 16 attempts with no errors in the three-set match. Danielson hit a career-high.625 for the match, which also including six digs and four blocks. Cubi-Otineru Named To Wahine Classic All-Tourney Team Senior outside hitter Aneli Cubi-Otineru was named to the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic All-Tournament team following last weekend s matches. Cubi-Otineru averaged 2.46 kills, 2.23 digs and 1.00 blocks against No. 2 Texas, No. 10 California and No. 19 Saint Louis. The all-tournament marks the second straight week Cubi- Otineru was named to an all-tournament team and is the second year in a row she was named to the Wahine Classic all-tournament team. Ferrell Has Career Night A week after having a career night, sophomore Stephanie Ferrell set two career-highs against No. 10 California on Sept. 6. Ferrell recorded 18 kills, surpassing her 14 kills against UCLA on Aug. 30. Ferrell also had nine digs in the match, surpassing her eight kills she against UCLA. Ferrell hit.256 for the match and had one ace against Cal. Five Straight Ranked Opponents UH played five straight matches with all five opponents being ranked in the AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll from Aug. 29 to Sept. 6. The Rainbow Wahine went 3-2 over that stretch, including wins over No. 9 UCLA, No. 19 Saint Louis and No. 25 Santa Clara. UH lost two matches last week to No. 2 Texas and No. 10 California. 15th Annual Volleyball Challenge UH won their 13th Volleyball Challenge in the 15 years it has been hosted at UH. The Rainbow Wahine went 3-0 in the tournament, beating Weber State, UT-San Antonio and No. 10 Stanford in the championship match. It was also the largest regular-season crowd since Nov. 18, 2005 against Louisiana Tech. Kaufman Unloads On No. 25 Santa Clara Senior middle Amber Kaufman hit a career-high.765 against No. 25 Santa Clara on Saturday, Aug. 29. Kaufman tied a career-high with 13 kills, which came on 17 attempts and no errors in the match. Over the weekend, Kaufman hit.426, averaging 2.4 kills per set and had four aces. Aces Wild For Cubi-Otineru Senior outside hitter Aneli Cubi-Otineru combined for 12 aces over three matches, including tying a career-high five aces twice. Cubi-Otineru served five aces against No. 9 UCLA on Aug. 29 and two nights earlier served five aces against Western Michigan. She had two aces against No. 25 Santa Clara in between. She averaged 1.20 aces per set over the weekend. Kaufman Versus Hooker, On The Court The last time Amber Kaufman and Destinee Hooker were together in the same competition, it wasn t on the volleyball court. Hooker is the top outside hitter for No. 2 Texas, while Kaufman is the top middle for No. 4 Hawai i. But in June, the two were in the finals of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Arkansas. Hooker won the NCAA Championship, while Kaufman finished in third. This will be the first meeting between the two on the volleyball court. UH Players Named All-Tourney; Danielson MOP Kanani Danielson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational, following UH s sweep of the tournament. Senior Aneli Cubi- Otineru and junior Dani Mafua were named all-tournament. UCLA Amanda Gil and Lauren Cook were joined by Santa Clara Krista Kelley and Western Michigan s Michelle Moore to round out the team. This is the second tournament Danielson has been named MOP, including last season s Honolulu Advertiser Challenge. Last year Danielson and was also named to the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational all-tournament team. This Week in Rainbow Wahine History Oct. 9-15, The Rainbow Wahine head on their first-ever regular season road trip past the Rocky Mountains. UH wins six matches on the trip, at Illinois State, at Illinois, at Northwestern, at Purdue and then twice at Kentucky, taking the midwest by storm. The two wins at Kentucky would serve as an omen for the season as Hawai i would return to Lexington in December to claim their secondstraight NCAA championship. Oct. 10, UH gives head coach Dave Shoji his 300th victory by beating Pepperdine 15-13, 9-15 and at the UCLA National Invitational Volleyball Tournament. UH finished the tournament with a 5-1 record before ending the season in the Northwest Refional with a record. Oct. 10, Hawai i falls at Brigham Young, 15-13, 4-15, and 8-15, los- ing their first WAC regular season match. The Rainbow Wahine got their revenge later that season, beating the Cougars in the WAC Tournament Championship Match, 15-12, 21-19, 13-15, and 24-22, in what many considered the great- est collegiate volleyball match of all time Rainbow Wahine Volleyball 6 Oct. 6, 2009

7 Dave Shoji has been a mainstay in both the realm of athletics in Hawai i and in the volleyball community for the past 35 years. As Shoji is primed to become just the second women s volleyball coach in NCAA Division I history to reach 1,000 career victories this season, the legendary coach still remains one of the best in the country, leading his team to 14 consecutive conference titles and appearances in 10 of the last 11 NCAA regionals. The honors have piled up for Shoji over the years. He is a nine-time conference and region Coach of the Year and was named the national Coach of the Year in Shoji was named to the list of all-time great coaches by USA Volleyball in He has also been inducted into Hawai i Sports Hall of Fame and was named coach of the NCAA 25th Anniversary team. In 1975, a young Shoji took over the reins of the UH women s volleyball program. He was just 28 years old with no clue that he would turn a one-year-old program into a national powerhouse for the next three decades. The team was coming off a 9-1 campaign in 1974 that ended with the Rainbow Wahine falling to UCLA in the national title match at the AIAW Championship. In Shoji s first four years at the helm of the program, he took the team to two more national title matches before he finally broke through to take the title in 1979 with a five-game victory over Utah State in the AIAW finals. It was the school s first-ever team national championship and a sign of great things to come for the young program. In 1981, Shoji became UH s first full-time coach for a women s program. He led the team to another national title, this time in the new NCAA Tournament in 1982, beating the USC Women of Troy in a come-from-behind five-game thriller. Shoji would lead the team to another title in 1983 with a straight-set win over UCLA, becoming the first school to win back-to-back NCAA championships. The Rainbow Wahine again returned to the national championship match in 1987, capping a 37-2 season with a sweep of Stanford for the program s fourth national title and third NCAA title. The team lost to Texas in the 1988 national championship match, then went through a stretch of five frustrating losses in six years to rival Long Beach State in the NCAA Regionals, holding them out of the NCAA Championships. UH looked primed to return to the final four in 1995, going through the season undefeated at After winning their regional match over Arizona State, Hawai i was set for a national championship run. But Michigan State dealt a heartbreaking blow to those plans, coming back from being down two games to none, to hold the Rainbow Wahine out of the NCAA Championships. Hawai i would finally make that return in 1996, dropping just one set in the first four matches of the NCAA Tournament. But another long-time nemesis of the Rainbow Wahine, Stanford, stopped UH s bid for a national title, sweeping Hawai i in the championship match. The Rainbow Wahine experienced another great run of success that started with the 1998 season, as transfer Heather Bown led the team from a perennial Top 25 squad and NCAA Tournament team to again a national-title contender. Hawai i made its way to the NCAA Regional Final in 1998 and was one of the top seeds in the 1999 tournament before a scrappy Texas A&M team beat UH in the regionals. Following that season, Louisiana-native Kim Willoughby came to the program, joining Lily Kahumoku, who was already establishing herself as one of the best players in the country, to form a dynamic duo that would lead the team to great success for another four years. From , the Rainbow Wahine advanced to the NCAA Championship national semifinal match three times, while Shoji s 2003 senior class became the winningest class in school history. Under Shoji, UH volleyball finished in the Top 10 in 22 of the 27 final AVCA polls, and ranked in the top five 14 times. They have made it to the postseason in all but one year, finishing with a winning record in all 34 seasons. The 63-year-old was also responsible for the start of the men s volleyball program in Shoji served as the men s coach at UH from , compiling a record of 81-48, leading the team to a Western Collegiate Volleyball Conference title in Shoji was a three-sport athlete at Upland High School in California, playing football, basketball and baseball. He then moved on to UC Santa Barbara, where he played baseball for a year, along with three years of volleyball. He earned All- America honors as a volleyball player in 1968 and 69. He earned his bachelor s degree in physical education in After spending two years in the U.S. Army, Shoji returned to Hawai i to coach the Kalani High School girls and boys volleyball teams. He then took an assistant coaching job at Punahou School. Shoji and his wife, the former Mary Tennefos, reside in Manoa. They have three children. Cobey, 30, works at Stanford University. Kawika, 20, and Erik, 18, play for the Stanford men s volleyball team.
