UH is also 21-2 in season-openers at home, losing only their first-ever opener at home in 1976 (a loss to UCLA at the Neal Blaisdell Center) and a five-game loss to Michigan last season. Hawai i in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic The Rainbow Wahine will be hosting their 21st Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, holding a (.750) record in the tournament s history. UH has won nine of the previous 20 tournaments, taking second seven times and third four times, never taking last in the classic. Two of the opposing teams have also made appearances in the Wahine Classic. UCLA has appeared in 18 classics, playing in every one from 1988 to 2003, then returning to the classic from They have a record (.759), winning eight titles. Penn State has appeared in the classic twice, taking second in 1993 and winning the title in The Nittany Lions own a 5-1 record (.833) in the tournament. Ohio has never competed in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic. Houston Looks To Leave Her Mark Jamie Houston comes into her senior year as UH s top returnee, winning WAC Player of the Year honors in She s not only coming into the season with high expectations from her team, but also is receiving recognition from others, as Houston was named the WAC Preseason Player of the Year. Houston ended up second in the nation last season with a 5.51 kill per game average, earning AVCA All-West Region and first-team all-wac honors. She also averaged 2.56 digs and 0.77 blocks per game. The Huntsville, Ala., native has racked up 1,611 kills in her first three seasons with the team, already ranking fourth all-time in the UH record book. Her 4.97 career kill per game average also ranks third. Kaufman was a starter in each of her first two seasons with the Rainbow Wahine, playing as a right-side hitter in 2006 and as a middle hitter in Kaufman averaged 1.77 kills and 0.84 blocks per game last season. But it might have been her offseason that generated much of the excitement about the San Jose, Calif., native. In the spring, Kaufman won the Western Athletic Conference title in the high jump, breaking the school record with a jump of 6 feet, 0.5 in. She then earned All-America honors after placing fifth at the NCAA Championships and then placed 12th at the U.S. Olympic Trials. The junior is a two-time academic all-wac honoree that earned WAC all-freshman team honors in She was named to the preseason all-wac team this year. Facing the No. 1 Team in the Country Hawai i has faced the No. 1 team in the AVCA Coaches Poll 20 times, carrying a record of 8-12 against top-ranked squads. Penn State will be the seventh team ranked No. 1 in the country that the Rainbow Wahine will play this decade. UH s has lost their last five matches to teams ranked No. 1. Their last win against a team that was No. 1 in the poll came against UCLA on Sept. 4, UCLA comes into the classic ranked sixth in the country. UH is 11-7 against teams ranked No. 6 in the poll, and have won its last two matches against the sixth-ranked team, coming in 2003 and 06. The Rainbow Wahine have played 179 total matches against teams ranked in the top 10 of the AVCA Coaches Poll since its inception in 1982, posting a record (.531), but have been just 1-6 against top 10 teams in the past two seasons. Herring played her high school volleyball at Kamehameha, where she was the three-time Hawai i Player of the Year. She also earned Volleyball magazine High School National Player of the Year honors in 2007, being named the No. 5 senior in the country by prepvolleyball.com. The Ewa Beach, O ahu, native led Kamehameha to three-straight state and ILH championships from , as the Warriors ended the 2007 ranked No. 4 in the final prepvolleyball.com national high school rankings. In club volleyball, Herring played for Imi Ike, leading the team to a silver medal finish at the Junior Olympic Volleyball Festival in 2008 in the 18-opens division. The freshman also played on the United States Youth National Team for two years, helping the U.S. to win the 2006 NORCECA Girls Youth Continental Championship. Rainbow Wahine on the Air The Rainbow Wahine have all of their home matches televised on KFVE (Channel 5) in Honolulu, except for a few matches that will be shown on pay-per-view. All matches (road matches included) are also available on radio on Sports Radio (1420 am). The radio broadcasts will also be streaming live over the Internet at Media Policy on Medical Information The University of Hawai i Athletics Department will no longer disclose any medical information regarding student-athletes. This has been implemented to protect the privacy of the student-athletes in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Information on each student-athlete will be released as probable, questionable or doubtful. Bows In The Polls The Rainbow Wahine are ranked No. 9 in the CSTV/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll this week. Hawai i has enjoyed a successful run of 233-consecutive weeks in the poll, dating back to 1992, appearing in 362 of the 366 (.989) polls all-time. UH is third in poll appearances, behind only Nebraska and Stanford, who have both appeared in all 366 polls. The Rainbow Wahine also rank third to Stanford and Nebraska in weeks ranked in the top 10 (273) and rank third to Nebraska and UCLA in weeks ranked at No. 1 (48). In their 48 weeks as the No. 1 team in the country, UH boasts a (.923) record. Cubi-Otineru Returns After All-WAC Season Aneli Cubi-Otineru returns for her junior season after earning first team all-wac honors in The Hale iwa, O ahu, native averaged 3.69 kills and 2.79 digs per game, posting 13 double-doubles on the season. She was also named to the preseason all-wac team this season. Cubi-Otineru transferred to the Rainbow Wahine after playing one season at the College of Southern Idaho. She earned NJCAA and AVCA All-America honors, helping the Golden Eagles to an NJCAA national championship. Rainbow Wahine Chosen to Win 13th WAC Title Hawai i was chosen by the coaches in the conference to defend its Western Athletic Conference title. The Rainbow Wahine received eight of the nine first-place votes with New Mexico State earning the other first-place vote. Hawai i earned 64 total points followed by New Mexico State with 57. For the second-straight season San Jose State and Idaho finished tied for third with 42 points. Utah State was picked fifth with 40, while Nevada was picked sixth with 34. Boise State finished in seventh place with 20 points, and Fresno State earned 16 points, good for eighth. Louisiana Tech was picked ninth with nine points. Hawai i won their eighth-straight Western Athletic Conference tournament title last season, advancing to all 10 championship matches. They have also won their 12th-straight WAC regular season title, as they have won all conference regular season titles since joining the WAC in volleyball in The Rainbow Wahine have a record of (.982) in conference play. UH had an amazing streak of 114-consecutive wins in conference play that ran from Oct. 17, 1998 to Oct. 13, 2006, when the Rainbow Wahine fell to New Mexico State in five games in Las Cruces, N.M. The streak spanned seven years and 361 days, beating 17 different teams. The loss occurred on the 58th road match during the streak, on the 29th different road trip that the Rainbow Wahine had taken. The Rainbow Wahine also saw another impressive conference streak come to an end this week as Utah State snapped UH s 108-match home conference winning streak. That streak included a 97-match WAC home winning streak, with USU posting the first-ever win by a WAC team in Honolulu. More impressive than the dominant record that UH has in conference is the fashion they have dominated in. Of the 169 wins, 129 of them have come in threegame sweeps. The Rainbow Wahine have won 39 WAC matches in four games and just 11 in five games. UH s loss to Utah State this past week was also the first time a WAC team has swept the Rainbow Wahine in their 12 years in the conference. In WAC Tournament play, Hawai i is 28-2 (.933) with 18 sweeps, seven fourgame wins and three five-game victories. During the 15-point, serve-to-score era ( ), Hawai i had 15 games in which they held their opponent to just two points, nine games where they held them to one point and five conference games in which they held the other team scoreless. 5 Head Coach Dave Shoji Head Coach Dave Shoji has been through it all as the head of the Rainbow Wahine volleyball program. He s seen his program go from a small upstart Shoji Notes team to one of the most visual teams in the country. Shoji ranks amongst the best in the coaching ranks no matter which way you look at it. He s second only to UCLA s Andy Banachowski in career victories with 953 and to Penn State s Russ Rose in career winning percentage (.849). He s also one of just five coaches that have claimed four national championships, all ranking second to Banachowski s six titles. But the impact he has made on the state of Hawai i could be even greater than the one he has on volleyball. Shoji s program has made women s volleyball into a staple of the islands..849 winning percentage is second all-time among active head coaches One of just two division one coaches to win 900 matches 29, 20-plus-win seasons Ever since the building of the Stan Sheriff Center in 1994, Hawai i 16, 30-plus-win seasons has led the nation in attendance, averaging over 7,000 a match. All Rainbow Wahine volleyball home matches are televised live throughout 33 consecutive winning seasons the islands with the majority of matches, home and away, available on the radio. The honors have piled up for Shoji over the years. He is a nine-time conference and region Coach of the Year and was named the national Four national championships (1979, 82, 83, 87) Eight NCAA Championships Appearances Coach of the Year in Shoji was named to the list of all-time great 22 NCAA Regional Appearances coaches by USA Volleyball in He has also recently been inducted to Hawai i Sports Hall of Fame and was named as the coach of the NCAA 25th 26 NCAA Tournament Appearance Anniversary team. In 1975, a young Shoji took over the reins of the UH women s volleyball program. He was just 28 years old with no clue that he would turn a one-year-old program into a national powerhouse for the next three decades. The team was coming off a 9-1 campaign in 1974 that ended with the Coached 39 All-Americans USA Volleyball All-Time Great Volleyball Coach Nine-time Conference Coach of the Year Rainbow Wahine falling to UCLA in the national title match at the AIAW Nine-time Regional Coach of the Year Championship. In Shoji s first four years at the helm of the program, he took the National Coach of the Year in 1982 team to two more national title matches before it finally broke through to take the title in 1979 with a five-game victory over Utah State in the AIAW OVERALL CONFERENCE finals. He led the team to another national title, this time in the new NCAA nd AIAW Tournament in 1982, beating the USC Women of Troy in a come-frombehind rd AIAW five-game thriller AIAW Champions Shoji would lead the team to another title in 1983 with a straight-set rd AIAW win over UCLA, becoming the first school to win back-to-back national NCAA Regional Finals championships. The Rainbow Wahine again returned to the national championship NCAA Champions match in 1987, capping a 37-2 season with a sweep of Stanford for the program s NCAA Champions fourth national title and third NCAA title NCAA First Round The team lost to Texas in the 1988 national championship match, NCAA Regional Semifinals then went through a stretch of five frustrating losses in six years to rival Long Beach State in the NCAA Regionals, holding them out of the NCAA NCAA Regional Finals Championships NCAA Champions Hawai i would finally make that return in 1996, dropping just one nd NCAA game in the first four matches of the NCAA Tournament. But another longtime nemesis of the Rainbow Wahine, Stanford, stopped UH s bid for a NCAA Regional Finals NCAA Regional Semifinals national title, sweeping the Rainbow Wahine in the championship match. Under Shoji, UH volleyball finished in the Top 10 in 21 of the 26 final NCAA Regional Finals AVCA polls, and ranked in the top five 14 times. They have made it to the No Post-season postseason in all but one year, finishing with a winning record in all NCAA Regional Finals seasons NCAA Regional Semifinals The 62-year-old was also responsible for the start of the men s volleyball program in Shoji served as the men s coach at UH from NCAA Regional Finals 85, compiling a record of 81-48, leading the team to a Western Collegiate nd NCAA Volleyball Conference title in NCAA First Round Shoji was a three-sport athlete at Upland High School in California, NCAA Regional Finals playing football, basketball and baseball. He then moved on to UC Santa NCAA Regional Semifinals Barbara, where he played baseball for a year, along with three years of volleyball. He earned All-America honors as a volleyball player in 1968 and NCAA Semifinals 69. He earned his bachelor s degree in physical education in NCAA Regional Semifinals After spending two years in the U.S. Army, Shoji returned to Hawai i NCAA Semifinals to coach the Kalani High School girls and boys volleyball teams. He then NCAA Semifinals took an assistant coaching job at Punahou School. Shoji and his wife, the former Mary Tennefos, reside in Manoa. Leading the charge for Penn State is the dynamic outside hitter duo of Nicole Fawcett and Megan Hodge, both AVCA First Team All Americans in Fawcett hit.313 with 4.44 kills per game while Hodge hit.297 with 4.60 kills and 2.54 digs per game. Christa Harmotto also earned AVCA First Team All-America Big Ten Player of the Year honors, hitting a blisterring.492 with 3.10 kills and 1.65 blocks per game. Arielle Wilson earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors, hitting.446 with 2.39 kills and 1.80 blocks per game. Blair Brown hit.366 with 1.91 kills and 0.92 blocks per game on the right side. Alisha Glass set the Penn State attack, earning AVCA Second Team All-America honors. She averaged assists and 0.95 blocks per game. The Bobcats are receiving votes in the CBS College Sports/AVCA Top 25 Preseason Poll. Ohio is led by outside hitter Ellen Herman. She averaged 4.07 kills per game in 2007 and played for the U.S. Women s National A2 Team this summer. Meghan Simmons averaged 1.99 kills and 0.96 blocks per game in the middle last season while Jane Sytsma hit.280 with 1.92 kills and 0.91 blocks per game. The Bobcats also return both setters that were used last season in in Michelle Jantsch and Jill Dearmond. Jantsch averaged 9.64 assists and 2.23 digs per game while Dearmond averaged 6.73 assists and 1.69 digs. Ryan Theis takes over the head coaching position at Ohio for the first year this season. He coached at the University of Florida for the past two seasons as an assistant to Mary Wise. The Bruins ended 2007 in the NCAA Regional Finals, falling to Stanford, while earning a No. 7 ranking. The Bruins return all-but-one starter from last year s team, although kill-leader Kaitlin Sather will be out indefinitely while recovering from surgery. Nellie Spicer sets the UCLA attack, earning AVCA All-America honors in each of the last two seasons. Spicer averaged assists, 3.07 digs, 1.19 kills and 0.76 blocks per game. Ali Daley averaged 3.69 kills and 3.05 digs per game in 2007, with Dicey McGraw averaging 2.57 kills per game in her freshman season. Katie Mills also started in 2007, averaging 1.95 kills and 1.45 blocks per game. Along with most of their firepower, UCLA also returns much of their defense as Jessica Fine (3.75 digs per game) and Jade Machado (3.19 dpg) both return for their senior seasons. The long rivalry between UH and UCLA goes back to 1974, the first year that Hawai i played a collegiate schedule. Since then, the two programs have played at least once every year with the Rainbow Wahine holding a slight lead in the alltime series.
