The No. 12 University of Hawai i women s volleyball team (22-5, 15-1 Big West) opens the 2016 NCAA Tournament with a first round match up vs. USC (18-13, PAC-12) this Friday at 12:30 pm HT. The Rainbow Wahine and Trojans will square off in the Sports Pavilion on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MInn. Host team and No. 2 seeded Minnesota (25-4) will face North Dakota (26-9) at 3:00 pm HT. The Rainbow Wahine earned the Big West Conference s automatic bid after winning its secondstraight and ninth overall BWC title with a 15-1 conference record. It is UH s 35th overall and 24th-straight NCAA appearance. The Rainbow Wahine finished the season on a 10-match win streak. The Bows also won 17 of their last 18 matches with the only loss coming in a five-set heartbreaker at Long Beach State in the first round of conference action.

With a sweep over Cal Poly, Shoji joined only Russ Rose as the only coaches to have accomplished the feat. In that same game, UH captured the Big West title outright with one more match to play. On Monday, Shoji was named the Big West Coach of the Year for the sixth time (one in PCAA). Overall, he has been vote conference Coach of the Year 14 times. Senior opposite Nikki Taylor earned her second consecutive Big West Player of the Year award after leading the team and the league in several categories with career-highs averaging 4.59 kills per set with a.280 hitting percentage; 51 service aces for 0.65 aces per set (NCAA-No. 2), 2.35 digs per set, and 1.15 blocks per set. Taylor, who missed the first three games of the year due to injury, finished the season strong, earned two-straight BWC Player of the Week awards (four overall this season) and her second career AVCA National Player of the Week award in her final week of the regular season. Joining Taylor on the all-big West first team was junior libero Savanah Kahakai, junior middle hitter Emily Maglio, senior outside/middle hitter Annie Mitchem, and freshman setter Norene Iosia who was also named to the league s all-freshman team. SHOJI SURPASSES 1,200 WIN MILESTONE. In UH s second to the last regular season match, head coach Dave Shoji became just the second NCAA DI head coach to record 1,200 wins with a sweep over Cal Poly on Nov. 17. The win also clinched UH s second-straight Big West title. Currently, he has a career record of 1, Only Penn State s Russ Rose has more. Earlier this season he became the first coach to record 1,200 wins. Shoji s teams have been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 polls 497 times--including all 14 polls this season. He has guided UH to four national championships (1979, 82, 83, 87) and was named the NCAA s 25th Anniversary Team s coach. Shoji has put together plus win seasons and 38th 20-plus win seasons and he has led the Rainbow Wahine to 41 consecutive winning seasons. Shoji has garnered 13 Conference Coach of the Year honors; 10 Regional Coach of the Year; and two National Coach of the Year awards in 1982 and HALL, BERG BOTH RETURN TO THE LAND OF 10,000 LAKES Both associate head coach Jeff Hall and assistant coach Lindsey Berg will both be returning to the state of Minnesote for the NCAA tournament. Hall grew up about a half-hour northeast of downtown Minneapolis in Shoreview, Minn. He went to Moundsview High School and played for the Mustangs prior to metriculating to play volleyball for Orange Coast Junior College and Park College then his final two seasons at Pacific where he was twice named Offensive Player of the Year and is considered one of the best players in the program s history. For Berg, it is a return to her alma mater in her first season as an assistant coach at the University of Hawai i. After graduating from Punahou School in 1998, Berg matriculated to Minnesota where she was a three-time All-Big Ten selection. She set a new Golden Gopher record for career assists and is ranked third in the Big Ten in all-time assists with 5,913. Berg earned her bachelor s degree in business marketing in 2001 from Minnesota s Carlson School of Management. Berg played professionally both in the U.S. (Minnesota Chill of the USPV in 2002) and abroad. She played eight years in Italy for three teams: Scavolini Pesaro ( ); Asystel Novara ( ); and MC- Carnaghi Villa Cortese ( ) and also played for Fenerbache in Istanbul in TAYLOR REPEATS AS BIG WEST PLAYER OF THE YEAR; SHOJI NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR; FIVE EARN ALL-BWC FIRST TEAM HONORS Senior opposite Nikki Taylor was named Big West Player of the Year, head coach Dave Shoji was named Big West Coach of the Year, and Norene Iosia, Savanah Kahakai, Emily Maglio, Annie Mitchem, and Taylor all earned all-big West first team honors. Iosia also was voted to the conference s All-Freshman team. Taylor, a senior from Honolulu, O ahu, earned her second consecutive Big West Player of the Year award. It is the 25th time that a UH player earned conference Player of the Year honors and the ninth UH player to earn the award at least twice. She also became just the sixth Rainbow Wahine to earn all-conference first team honors all four years of her collegiate career, joining Angelica Ljunquist ( Big West, 1996 WAC), Lily Kahumoku ( , 02-03), Kim Willoughby ( ), Kanoe Kamana o ( ), and Kanani Danielson ( ). Taylor became just the 10th player in Big West Conference history to accomplish the feat of earning four first team honors. Taylor helped to lead the Rainbow Wahine to a near-perfect conference record of 15-1 en route to winning back-to-back Big West titles. She recorded career-highs across the board averaging 4.59 kills per set,.65 service aces per set, 1.15 blocks per set and 5.85 points per set. She led the Big West this season in kills per set (NCAA-No. 11), service aces (NCAA-No. 11), service aces per set (NCAA-No. 2), and points per set (NCAA-No. 5). She currently is No. 12 in UH history with 1,354 career kills and No. 8 with 116 service aces and No. 10 with 3.67 kills per set. For the season, she notched 18 double-digit kill games, including seven with 20+ kills with six double-doubles. Taylor was voted Big West Player of the Week four times this season, bringing her career total to 10 tying only Kanani Danielson as the only other Rainbow Wahine to earn 10 conference Player of the Week awards. With this year s BWC title, Hawai i grabbed the conference s automatic bid to their 35th overall and 24th consecutive NCAA DI Women s Volleyball Championship. The Rainbow Wahine, who lead the conference and rank in the nation s top 20 in three statistical categories, enter the postseason riding a 10-match win streak. In the final week of the regular season, Shoji collected his 1,200th career victory, becoming just the second NCAA DI women s volleyball coach to hit the 1,200 win milestone. Shoji, who is in his 42nd year at the helm of the Rainbow Wahine program, now has a career record of 1, He is right behind Penn State s Russ Rose who notched his 1,200th career win earlier this season. This marks Maglio s second-straight season on the All-Big West first team. She led the league in both hitting percentage at.393 (NCAA-No. 19) and 1.36 blocks per set (NCAA-No. 24). Maglio also posted career-highs in almost all statistical categories with 216 kills, 2.35 kills p/set, 125 total blocks, 12 solo blocks, and 113 block assists, and 53 digs. She was named the Big West s Defensive Player of the Week twice this year. For Kahakai, it is her first time earning all-big West first team honors after earning honorable mention last season. Kahakai has been the anchor of the defense all season long. This season she led UH with 380 digs while averaging a career-high and team-high 4.09 digs per match. Kahakai also contributed with 107 assists and 10 service aces. She is just 35 digs away from becoming the 14th member of UH s 1,000 Career Dig Club. Iosia has been the orchestrator of the UH offense starting in 24 games this season. She led the Bows with 12 double-doubles and is just two assists shy of reaching 900 assists in her rookie season. She was second on the squad with 30 service aces and third in the Big West averaging.35 aces per set. Iosia was also second on the team with 232 digs (2.70 per set) and she recorded 48 blocks with five solo. She earned three Big West Freshman of the Week awards. MItchem missed the first nine games of the season due to an injury suffered on the first day of practice. But since her return to the court, the Bows have gone 17-1 overall. Her addition into the lineup has proved to be a key component to UH s success. She slid over from her customary middle hitter position to play on the leftside, giving much balance to the offense and taking a load off of Taylor on the right. Mitchem recorded 173 kills, averaging 2.88 per set with a hitting percentage of.330. She also was in on 55 blocks (five solo) with 41 digs. She was named Big West Player of the Week on Nov. 7 after helping the Bows sweep both Long Beach State and CSUN to claim first place in the league. MITCHEM SOLIDIFIES LINEUP BY SLIDING TO THE LEFT After breaking her left pinkie finger on the first day of fall practice, senior outside/middle hitter Annie Mitchem missed the first three tournaments (nine matches) of the season. Since making her return to the court in Week 4 of this season, Mitchem has come on strong and has made a permanent move since Oct. 16 against UC Davis to the left after being a middle hitter for her most of her career. She had been more accustomed to playing in the middle, but with various ailments and a lack of production troubling the leftside early, Mitchem came to the rescue and has emerged as the needed link to the lineup. She has provided stability and balance for UH s offensive attack and taken pressure off of opposite Nikki Taylor. At first, Mitchem was a temporary fill in on the left for freshman Kirsten Sibley when she was out with the flu against Pepperdine. She then played a little of both left and middle before permanently making the shift over to the outside. Mitchem is fourth on the team with 173 kills, averaging 2.88 per set with 55 total blocks. Mitchem has worked hard and gotten lots of reps with setter Norene Iosia to get comfortable on the outside. The hard work has definitely paid off. Three weeks ago, Mitchem was named Big West Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Against Long Beach State and CSUN, she hit.489 and averaged 4.17 kills per set as Hawai i rolled to a pair of straight-set wins to take over sole possession of first place in the conference. Mitchem recorded a combined 25 kills with seven digs, four blocks and three service aces as the Rainbow Wahine improved to 18-5 overall and 11-1 in conference. Mitchem recorded match-high highs of 15.0 points on both nights. Avenging an earlier five-set loss at LBSU, the Rainbow Wahine utilized Mitchem s 13 kills on.619 hitting to dismantle the Beach 25-13, 25-15, She committed no errors in 21 swings. Mitchem played solidly on the left side against the 49ers with a match-high in kills and season-high in hitting percentage. She also contributed four digs, two blocks and a service ace. Mitchem had no letdown in the 25-9, 25-14, victory over the Matadors. Her match-high 12 kills paced UH, and she hit.385 with just two errors in 26 attempts. Mitchem also tied a career high with two service aces, adding three digs and two blocks. Prior to making her 2016 debut against Pepperdine, Mitchem had missed 344 total days since she had last donned the Green and White uniform. Last season, she broke her right pinky finger and missed the final 12 matches of the season. This season, she was out since the first day of practice this fall after breaking her left pinky finger while blocking. Last year as a junior transfer, Mitchem recorded 51 kills, 33 blocks, 15 digs and two service aces as a junior transfer out of Irvine Valley College. While playing with Lasers, Mitchem was named the AVCA s Two-Year College National Player of the Year in both 2013 and 14 and also earned AVCA All-America, all-region, all-state, and all-league honors in both seasons. She was just the second player from the California Community College Athletics Association to be named the AVCA College Player of the Year. At IVC, she was coached by current Rainbow Wahine volunteer volleyball coach and former UH men s volleyball All-American, Tom Pestolesi. Taylor led the Big West in 2016 with 4.59 kills per set (NCAA-No. 11), 51 service aces (NCAA-No. 10),.65 aces per set (NCAA-No. 2) and 5.85 points per set (NCAA-No. 5). Overall, Taylor is averaging career-highs in kills per set, service aces per set, digs per set (2.35) and blocks per set (1.15). Taylor s season got off to a late start after missing UH s first three matches due to an injury sustained in UH s Green/White Scrimmage. During the UCI match, she became just the 12th player in Rainbow Wahine history to reach the 1,300 career kill mark. Taylor passed Diana Jessie ( ) to move into No. 12 on UH s career kill list. Currenlty, Taylor has 1,354 total kills and currently chasing UH-great Deitre Collins ( ) who recorded 1,385 during her illustrious career at No. 11. Through 27 matches played thus far, Taylor also leads Hawai i with 363 total kills, 51 service aces, and points. She also is second on the team with 91 blocks (six solo) and has contributed with 186 digs and 15 assists. Taylor has notched 18 double-digit kill matches thus far--including the last four straight matches. She has seven 20+ kill games under her belt. She has also recorded six double-double matches, most recently on UH s Senior Night against UC Santa Barbara with 22 kills and 11 digs. MAGLIO DOMINANT FORCE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE NET Hawai i junior middle hitter Emily Maglio (Coquitlam, B.C., Canada/Pinetree HS) has been a huge presence at the net for UH this year. Offensively, she led the Big West and UH with a.393 hitting percentage (No. 19 in the NCAA), while on defense she leads the league with 125 total blocks, 1.36 blocks per set (No. 25 in the NCAA). After UH s most recent roadtrip, Maglio earned her second Big West Defensive Player of the Year award after recording a team-high with 12 blocks combined while averaged 2.00 blocks per set in UH s road wins at UC Irvine and UC Davis. Maglio, tied her career high with nine blocks against the Anteaters. She notched one block in the first set, and then went on a blocking barrage with four apiece in the second and third frames. Maglio collected three more blocks versus the Aggies, including a solo stuff. She also provided offense with 12 kills on.435 hitting, committing just two errors in 23 attempts. Maglio also had three digs in each match. Maglio, is averaging career-highs across the board with 2.35 kill per set, 1.36 blocks per set, 0.58 digs per set, and 3.10 points per set. She has already recorded career highs with 216 kills and 125 total blocks (12 solo/113 block assists). In UH s second tournament of the season, Maglio was a blocking beast en route to capturing her first ever Big West indoor volleyball weekly honor as Defensive Player of the Week. Maglio, who also earned a spot on Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic s all-tournament team, led UH with 17 blocks nine more than her closest teammate over UH s three matches this week. Maglio is looking to improve upon her sophomore indoor season where she blossomed into a first team all-big West middle hitter and became a force to reckon with. Maglio, who is the top returning blocker from last year s squad which finished the season ranked No. 2 in the NCAA in blocks, was second on the team averaging 1.13 blocks per set. She was also second on the squad with a.384 hitting percentage behind fellow middle, Olivia Magill who has since graduated from last year. Last season, Maglio also sparkled in her first season playing for UH s beach volleyball team. She earned first team AVCA All-America honors as was one-half of the Big West s Pair of the Year with partner Katie Spieler. Maglio recorded a 22-6 overall record and a 21-5 mark when partnered with Spieler. KAHAKAI ANCHORING THE BACKLINE Junior libero Savanah Kahakai has been solid in the back row as the anchor of UH s passing and defense. This season, she shifted over to middle back and now utilizes her quickness to help the defense out however she can. Two weeks ago, she eclipsed the 900-career dig mark recording 16 against LBSU and nine vs. CSUN. Kahakai is now just 35 digs away from tallying 1,000 digs. Out of 27 matches played this year, she has had recorded 21 double-digit dig performances, with five 20+ dig matches and three games with nine digs each. Most recently she tied her career-high again with 23 digs for the fourth time this season at Cal Poly on the road in a four-set win. Kahakai has a team-high 372 digs, averaging 4.09 digs per set. She also has 100 assists and eight service aces. IOSIA GRASPS REINS ON THE OFFENSE Since the third match of the season, rookie setter Norene Iosia has taken the reins of the offense and has started started 24 of the last 25 matches. She leads UH with 12 double-doubles--including the last four matches of the season--en route to earning BWC Freshman of the Week honors three times this season. Iosia is averaging assists per set with 898 total assists. She ranks third in the league with 0.35 aces per set. Iosia is also second on the team with 30 service aces and she has recorded 48.0 blocks. She is ranked at No. 64 in the NCAA in assists per set. BURNS STEADY IN THE MIDDLE With Annie MItchem sliding over to take over on the leftside, redshirt freshman Natasha Burns has stepped up to fill the gap in the middle. Last season the 6-5 Hamilton, Ontario, Canada native, broke a bone in her hand during training camp and ended up redshirting her true rookie season. This season, she has made strides improving her game. She is averaging 1.18 kills per set with 58 total kills with 44 total blocks (including two solo) for 0.90 blocks per set. She has started 10 matches this season--including the last nine straight. GRANATO EMERGING AS A STEADY FORCE ON THE OUTSIDE Sophomore McKenna Granato has improved thoughout the season to become a solid presence on the left-side and around the rotation. She finished the regular season second on the team with 271 kills (2.91 p/s) with 186 digs, 27.0 blocks and 23 service aces. Against UC Santa Barbara, Granato hit a career-high.478 average with 13 kills with just two errors in 23 swings. In UH s thrilling, five-set reverse-sweep win over Arizona, Granato pummeled a career-high 33 kills with a then career-high.459 percentage with just five errors in 61 attacks. Greeley, a 6-1 pin hitter from Riverside, Calif., is projected to play primarily in the back row for now, but she has made periodic appearances going all the way around the rotation. Greeley is a steadying force for the Rainbow Wahine on the court and her presence and craftiness bodes well for her both in the back row and hopefully soon in the front as well. Currently, she has already has 138 digs--including a career-high of 18 set against Kansas State in the first week s tournament. After earning all-league freshman honors to start her UH career, junior Kalei Greeley earned honorable mention honors last year as a sophomore. The outside hitter from Riverside, Calif. was steady all season, putting down 214 total kills with a career-high.260 hitting percentage overall. She also added 205 digs, 47 total blocks, 18 service aces and 11 assists overall. She helped lift UH to a five-set win against TCU (Dec. 4) in the first round of the NCAA tournament with a season-high 16 kills to go with a career-high 17 digs for her third double-double of the season and then against Penn State in the NCAA Regionals was one of the key elements in UH s sweep over the Nittany Lions. She was a warrior on the court, playing on a hurt ankle ending the match with eight kills, five digs, two blocks, two aces, and two assists. RAINBOW WAHINE UNANIMOUS CHOICE TO REPEAT AS BWC CHAMPIONS Hawai i was unanimously selected to repeat as the Big West Conference women s volleyball champion, according to the Big West women s volleyball preseason coaches poll as voted on by the nine head coaches. The Rainbow Wahine, who reclaimed the title last season with a perfect 16-0 mark, captured all nine first-place votes en route to a perfect 81-point total. Long Beach State secured the second slot after securing 68 points and earning the third spot with a point total of 66 was Cal Poly. The Anteaters of UC Irvine ranked fourth with 47 points and is followed by UC Davis after tallying 44 points. UC Santa Barbara, who welcomes the No. 24 recruiting class in the nation, according to PrepVolleyball. com, nabbed the sixth slot after registering 39 points. CSUN holds the seventh spot with 29 points and UC Riverside locked-in the eighth position after grabbing 20 points. Rounding out the nine-team field is Cal State Fullerton with 11 points. PESTOLESI JOINS COACHING STAFF University of Hawai i women s volleyball head coach Dave Shoji finalized his 2016 coaching staff with the hiring of volunteer coach Tom Pestolesi. Pestolesi also returns to Hawai i with a wealth of experience. He will be taking a five-month sabbatical as the head coach of the women s indoor volleyball team at Irvine Valley College this season for the opportunity to serve as a volunteer coach under his former coach and mentor, Shoji. After playing two seasons at Long Beach State from , Pestolesi transferred to Hawai i where he earned All-America honors in his junior and senior years under Shoji, who was the UH men s volleyball head coach from He earned his bachelor s degree in physical education from UH in 1983 and also earned his master s degree from Long Beach State in Pestolesi played for the U.S. team at the World University Games in Bucharest, Romania in 1981 before beginning his coaching career. Pestolesi coached at a trio of high schools and then for the Professional Beach 4 s Tour before starting the IVC men s volleyball program in Since that time, Pestolesi has served many roles at Irvine Valley College. He won three state championships as the head men s volleyball coach from and with a career record of Pestolesi has been the head women s volleyball coach since 1998 with a career record of He has led the Lasers to 17 consecutive state playoffs and to a state championship title in 2014-led in part by current Rainbow Wahine middle hitter Annie Mitchem who was a two-time AVCA national two-year college Player of the Year at IVC. Pestolesi then started the IVC women s beach volleyball program as the head coach in 2010 and at the same time introducing it as an intercollegiate sport to the California Community Colleges. His beach teams have earned a 20-1 record against community colleges and the Lasers were the ICCCAA state champions in 2015 and the state runners-up in During his time at IVC, Pestolesi also spent time as a coach with several of the U.S. National teams. He was the USA Men s and Women s Training Coach from and was an assistant on the women s indoor team, winning a gold medal at the 2012 Pan Am Cup (Juarez, Mexico); silver medal at the Final Four in 2009 in Lima, Peru; and a fourth place finish in the NORCECA Tournament in 2009 in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Pestolesi is married to Diane Sebastian Pestolesi, who is considered to be the first blue-chip mainland recruit for Shoji and his young program in Sebastian Pestolesi was the starting middle blocker for the 1979 AIAW national championship team and named to the all-tournament team. She was a three-time AIAW All-American ( ) and the 1980 Broderick Award winner as the nation s top collegiate volleyball player. A U.S. national team member, she was named the 1981 Hawai i state female athlete of the year and in 2013 she was inducted into UH s Circle of Honor. 8 HEAD COACH DAVE SHOJI DAVE SHOJI Head Coach 42nd Season UC Santa Barbara (1969) Overall Record: 1, Dave Shoji enters his 42nd season as head coach of the Rainbow Wahine. In 2016, he led UH to a 29-2 overall record; a 16-0 mark to win its eighth Big West title thus advancing to its 34th trip to the NCAA Tournament. Shoji became the all-time winningest coach in NCAA Division I women s volleyball history with his 1,107th victory on Sept. 6, 2013 against Santa Clara. Currently he is ranked No. 2 in the NCAA behind Penn State s Russ Rose with a career record of 1, The honors have piled up for Shoji over the years. In addition to being a member of the AVCA Hall of Fame, he is an 13-time conference and nine-time region Coach of the Year, and was named the National Coach of the Year in 1982 and in Shoji was named to the list of all-time great coaches by USA Volleyball in He has also been inducted into the Hawai i Sports Hall of Fame and was named coach of the NCAA 25th Anniversary team. In 1975, a young Shoji took over the reins of the UH women s volleyball program. He was just 28 years old with no clue that he would turn a oneyear-old program into a national powerhouse over the next four decades. The team was coming off a 9-1 campaign in 1974 that ended with the Rainbow Wahine falling to UCLA in the national title match at the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) Championship. In Shoji s first four years at the helm of the program, he took the team to two more national title matches before he finally broke through to take the title in 1979 with a five-game victory over Utah State in the AIAW finals. It was the school s first-ever team national championship and a sign of great things to come for the young program. In 1981, Shoji became UH s first full-time coach for a women s program. He led the team to another national title, this time in the new NCAA Tournament in 1982, beating the USC Women of Troy in a come-from-behind five-game thriller. Shoji would lead the team to another title in 1983 with a straight-set win over UCLA, becoming the first school to win back-to-back NCAA championships. The Rainbow Wahine again returned to the national championship match in 1987, capping a 37-2 season with a sweep of Stanford for the program s fourth national title and third NCAA title. The team lost to Texas in the 1988 national championship match, then went through a stretch of five frustrating losses in six years to rival Long Beach State in the NCAA Regionals, holding them out of the NCAA Championships. UH looked primed to return to the Final Four in 1995, going through the season undefeated at After winning their regional match over Arizona State, Hawai i was set for a national championship run. But Michigan State dealt a heart-breaking blow to those plans, coming back from being down two games to none, to hold the Rainbow Wahine out of the NCAA Championships. Hawai i would finally make that return in 1996, dropping just one set in the first four matches of the NCAA Tournament. But another long-time nemesis of the Rainbow Wahine, Stanford, stopped UH s bid for a national title, sweeping Hawai i in the championship match. The Rainbow Wahine experienced another great run of success that started with the 1998 season, as transfer Heather Bown led the team from a perennial Top 25 squad and NCAA Tournament team to again a national-title contender. Hawai i made its way to the NCAA Regional Final in 1998 and was one of the top seeds in the 1999 tournament before a scrappy Texas A&M team beat UH in the regionals. The Rainbow Wahine returned to the NCAA Championships in 2009, reaching the national semifinal match in Shoji s 35th season, giving the legendary coach his second national coach of the year award and his 10th award for conference and region coach of the year. Under Shoji, UH volleyball finished in the Top 10 in 23 of the 28 final AVCA polls, and ranked in the top five 15 times. They have made it to the postseason in all but one year, finishing with a winning record in all 39 seasons and missing the postseason just once. The 69-year-old was also responsible for the start of the men s volleyball program in Shoji served as the men s coach at UH from , compiling a record of and leading the team to a Western Collegiate Volleyball Conference title in Shoji was a three-sport athlete at Upland High School in California, playing football, basketball and baseball. He then moved on to UC Santa Barbara, where he played baseball for a year, along with three years of volleyball. He earned All-America honors as a volleyball player in 1968 and 69. He earned his bachelor s degree in physical education in After spending two years in the U.S. Army, Shoji returned to Hawai i to coach the Kalani High School girl s and boy s volleyball teams. He then took an assistant coaching job at Punahou School. Shoji and his wife, the former Mary Tennefos, reside in Manoa. The Shoji s have three children, Cobey, Kawika and Erik. Daughter Cobey played volleyball at both UNLV and Michigan as a defensive specialist/setter. She graduated from Michigan with a bachelor s degree in sports management and communications and later received her master s in athletic administration from North Carolina. She is married to South Carolina assistant coach Coleman Hutzler who is in charge of special teams and linebackers. The Hutzlers have two children. Both sons Kawika and Erik helped lead the Stanford men s volleyball team to a national title in 2010, with Kawika earning National Player of the Year honors. Seniors Waynette Mitchell, Terry Malterre and Angie Andrade, along with sophomore Diane Sebastian, led the way to Carbondale, Ill., site of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Nationals, where they earned all-tournament team honors. The two-and-a-half-hour marathon against Utah State ended with Mitchell serving aloha ball and Bonnie Gouveia tooling the Aggie block for the championship point. Seven seniors led the way to victory in Lexington, Ky. In just over an hour, the Wahine defeated UCLA, 15-13, 15-4, Deitre Collins and Joyce Ka apuni earned first-team All-America honors, while Kori Pulaski received honorable-mention status. Collins, who became only the second Rainbow Wahine threetime All-American, also won the Broderick Cup, which honors the most outstanding collegiate female athlete in the nation. The Rainbow Wahine finished the season with an impressive 34-2 record, while seniors Collins, Ka apuni, Pulaski, Sista Palakiko, Kris Pulaski, Marcie Wurts and Missy Yomes ended their careers with a second NCAA championship. After hosting the NCAA first round and Northwest Regional for the first time ever in Klum Gym, the Rainbow Wahine advanced to the Final Four in Indianapolis, Ind. It took almost two hours for head coach Dave Shoji to win his fourth national championship in nine years. The win was Hawai i s first title and first Final Four appearance since The Wahine captured the crown with a four-set victory over Stanford, 15-10, 15-10, 9-15, Ending their careers were seniors Reydan Ahuna, Suzanne Eagye, Mahina Eleneki and Diana Jessie, all of whom were instrumental in Hawai i s success during the season. Teee Williams capped off a spectacular rookie campaign by being named National Player of the Year.
