The Dons will be playing only their second home match of the season when they host the Pilots Friday night at War Memorial Gym and their first since sweeping Maryland-Eastern Shore Sept. 10. USF suffered their first losses of the season last weekend at #6 Pepperdine and #21 Loyola Marymount in four-games. San Francisco fell three votes shy of remaining in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Poll after earning a No. 24 ranking the previous week heading into league play. San Francisco split the regular season series with the Pilots and the Bulldogs last season, defeating both at home. TERESA RUSSELL SURPASSES 1,000 CAREER KILLS: Senior middle blocker Teresa Russell became the seventh player in USF volleyball history to surpass 1,000 career kills and the second Don this season (Brittanie Budinger) after recording her second kill at #21 Loyola Marymount. Russell continues her remarkable comeback after suffering a career-threatening injury during the 2001 season. On the season, Russell has 236 kills with 13 matches remaining on the schedule. Russell is also closing in on the all-time blocking record and moved into second place on the career list with four blocks on the road and has 398 in her Hilltop career. JEFF NELSON ERA OFF TO IMPRESSIVE START: USF Volleyball enters the 2003 season with a new head coach at the controls. Jeff Nelson was introduced as the eighth head coach in program history February 13, 2003 following a successful eight-year career as the head coach at Texas Tech. Nelson guided the Red Raiders to five NCAA Tournament berths and five 20-plus victory seasons during his tenure in Lubbock. Nelson enters his first season on the Hilltop boasting a overall record (.636). Nelson inherits the reigns of a program with just two winning seasons (1985 & 1987) in the 26 years of the program, including a 6-25 mark last year. The effects have been immediate. San Francisco entered West Coast Conference play with an unblemished 15-0 record - the best start in league history. In addition, the Dons cracked the USA Today/AVCA Top- 25 Coaches Poll for the first time in program history prior to league play and have captured four tournament titles. Nelson is joined on the bench by Shawn Garus and Ki Choi, both in their first season on the Hilltop. 3 RUSSELL NAMED WCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: After propelling USF to an undefeated non-conference slate and winning tournament MVP honors, senior middle blocker Teresa Russell was named West Coast Conference Volleyball Player of the Week Sept. 23. Russell continued her amazing comeback from a career-threatening injury in 2001 to reclaim her place among the top players on the West Coast with an MVP performance at the 2003 Portland State Viking Showcase last weekend. Russell catapulted the Dons to three wins at PSU, to give San Francisco a 15-0 start, the best in WCC history with victories against Air Force, Eastern Illinois and the host Vikings. After averaging 4.73 kills on an impressive.426 hitting (just 12 errors in 94 attacks) to go along with 1.45 digs, and 1.18 blocks, Russell earned MVP honors and her selection to the all-tournament squad was the fourth for the Simi Valley native. Russell pounded 21 kills against Air Force on.562 hitting to go along with seven blocks and cranked it up another notch against Portland State. USF dropped game one and trailed 12-9 in game two before Russell took over, recording a solo block and kills on six consecutive points as the Dons erupted for a 21-6 run. Russell finished with eight kills in game two alone, finishing with 20 kills, adding six digs and four blocks against PSU. DONS STREAKING TOWARDS BEST RECORD: USF s unprecedented 15-0 start prior to the start of West Coast Conference play already is approaching the most victories in program history. The best mark was turned in by the 1985 club that went 17-13, with a 6-6 WCC mark in the first year of WCC volleyball. The 15 wins the Dons have tallied this year represent the third highest total behind the 1987 team that finished with a 9-5 mark in league action. ON THE ROAD AGAIN... STILL: San Francisco continued their preseason odyssey on the road last week when they opened the 2003 West Coast Conference schedule on the road at #6 Pepperdine and #21 Loyola Marymount. Prior to the setbacks against the Waves and the Lions, USF compiled an unblemished 15-0 record this season despite playing just one home match. In fact, the Dons play 16 of their first 17 matches away from the friendly confines of War Memorial Gym. A LOOK AHEAD: USF hosts the Pacific Northwest schools next weekend in only the second and third home matches of the season at War Memorial Gym. The Dons host Portland Friday Oct. 10 in the first home contest since sweeping Maryland- Eastern Shores Sept. 10. After taking on the Pilots and Bulldogs, the Dons head to #16 Santa Clara and #19 San Diego for WCC road matches. TOURNAMENT QUAD: After going 3-0 in the 2003 Portland State Viking Showcase last week, San Francisco won their fourth tournament of the season without a loss. The Dons also captured titles at the Washington State Cougar Challenge, the Fiesta Bowl Classic, hosted by Northern Arizona and the Butler Invitational. With the four tournament victories, USF set a new bench mark for most tournament hardware. The 2000 edition of Dons volleyball captured three tournament titles, although the Dons lost one match en route to the title of the Denver Pioneer Classic. BREAKING OUT THE BROOMS: So far this season, USF has done a great job of closing out opponents in three games. The Dons have posted eight sweeps among their 15 victories this season.
