Gonzaga lost one game in the standings to front running Pepperdine after the Waves won two-of-three against No. 25 San Diego. Gonzaga is currently two games behind Pepperdine with 18 games remaining on the WCC schedule. On Friday Portland won a pitcher s duel 2-1 as Ed Clelland pitched a complete game in a losing effort for the Zags. The Bulldogs offense exploded for 20 hits on Saturday during a 16-5 victory. Kevin Richardson went 4-for-6 to lead the Bulldogs hit parade. On Sunday, Portland pitchers were once again able to slow down the GU offense during a 12-2 Pilots win. Brian Munhall picked up two hits to lead Gonzaga. GOLDEN HOME RUN: Nate Gold became Gonzaga s single season home run record holder on Saturday afternoon as he blasted his 22nd of the season off Portland pitcher Matt Hollod. Gold passed the mark previously held by Jeff Hainline when the former Bulldogs slugger hit 21 home runs in Gold now has 23 games left to chase the WCC single season record of 30 set by San Francisco s Taggert Bozied in the 1999 season. Chris Donnels (Loyola Marymount) 21 (1986) HERTZ GETS 600th: Head coach Steve Hertz won his 600th game at Gonzaga on Wednesday night when the Bulldogs came from behind to defeat Washington, 7-5. Hertz has compiled 660 career wins in his 25 seasons as a Division I head coach with 601 coming in a Gonzaga uniform.

Hertz has compiled a record while posting a mark at Gonzaga. Last season Hertz earned his fifth Coach of the Year honor as he was named the WCC Coach of the Year, becoming the first non-california school coach to win the award. A 1972 Gonzaga alumnus, Hertz played three years of professional baseball in the Minnesota Twins organization before starting his coaching career. He was named the head coach at Gonzaga in 1978 guiding the Bulldogs to a NCAA Regional appearance. After two seasons at UC-Irvine, Hertz returned to Gonzaga in 1981 and coached the Zags to their last NCAA Regional appearance. ALMOST PERFECT REDING: Sophomore left-hander Matt Reding was almost perfect as he picked up his first career win on Wednesday night against Washington. Reding pitched four innings of relief allowing only a single hit in the ninth inning as he faced only twelve batters. The Husky who reached base was eliminated when Gonzaga turned a double-play to end the game. Reding also struck out three batters during his stint on the mound. HOME RUN WATCH CONTINUES: Gonzaga continued its home run record chase as the Bulldogs added 5 more home runs during the week. The Zags have now hit 59 home runs in 33 games on the season. Gonzaga set a school record in 1999 with 82 home runs in 52 games. The 82 home runs also stands as a West Coast Conference record tied with Loyola Marymount which hit 82 home runs in Gonzaga is currently five home runs shy of tying the second best mark in school history. The 1986 Zags squad hit 64 home runs. THRU 33 GAMES: HIT MAGIC: Senior Kevin Richardson collected his second four-hit game of the season on Saturday when Gonzaga defeated Portland. Richardson and Eric Rodland are the only GU players to accomplish that feat so far this season. Richardson s other four-hit game came during Gonzaga s 17-2 win over Santa Clara. Rodland s four-hit game came last week when Gonzaga defeated Saint Mary s In all three games the Bulldogs have scored at least 16 runs and the player collecting four hits has driven in at least four runs. SIMONITSCH STRONG AGAIN: Sophomore left-hander Errol Simonitsch looked strong for his third straight start as he worked seven innings during Saturday s win over Portland. He struck out nine batters to take the team lead in strike outs with 37. Simonitsch also did not allow a walk during his seven innings marking the fourth time this season that he has worked at least five innings and not walked a batter. Simonitsch was also able to pick up his second win of the season. Simonitsch has been the hard luck pitcher on the team in his last two starts leaving the game with a lead only to wind up with a nodecision for the game. CLELLAND GOES THE DISTANCE: Sophomore left-hander Ed Clelland went the distance against Portland on Friday to pitch only Gonzaga s second complete game of the season. Clelland was on the short end of the decision as the Zags lost 2-1. In comparison, Gonzaga s staff tossed eight complete games last season with Barry Matthews leading the team with five complete games.

Last season four Gonzaga pitchers combined to shut out L-C State for the first time in two seasons and for the first time since 1994 at Harris Field. Micah Furtado and Tory Haven lead the Warriors offense with both players hitting over.400. Ed Cheff is in his 26th season as the head coach at L-C State. SCOUTING SAN FRANCISCO: Gonzaga continues West Coast Conference cross-divisional play when the Zags travel to San Francisco for the weekend. Gonzaga has struggled in recent years when playing at Benedetti Diamond, but this season it is the Dons who have had their problems. USF is currently 8-27 and is sitting on a seven game losing skid. Joe Jacobitz is the team s leading hitter with a.392 average but the Dons pitching staff has struggled with a 8.00 team earned run average in 35 games. Nino Giarratano is in his fourth year as head coach. USF currently leads the series WEEKEND GAMES ON THE RADIO: The three game series between Gonzaga and San Francisco will be aired on KFAN AM 790 in the Spokane area. Mark Doolittle will provide all the play-by-play action starting Friday with the pre-game show at 2:45 p.m. Fans can also hear the action on the internet at The University of San Francisco will also do live stats for all three games on the internet on their site: MINOR LEAGUE ZAGS REPORT: Seven former Gonzaga players reported to their respective teams for the start of the 2002 minor league season last week. Former Bulldogs outfielder Scott Morgan is at the highest level starting the season with the Triple-A Portland Beavers after being a non-roster invitee to the San Diego Padres Big League camp. Bo Hart is at Double-A, while the other five former players are in the Single-A level. Former outfielder Jason Bay was recently traded to the New York Mets organization while former catcher George Arnott signed with the Florida Marlins Single-A club after playing for the Independent League St. Paul Saints last season. Former minor leaguer Darin Blood has been working out for several teams but has not yet signed to play during the 2002 season.
