UC DAVIS AT NEVADA POSTPONED Due to inclement weather in the Reno area Tuesday, UC Davis matchup at Nevada has been rescheduled... The Aggies and the Wolf Pack will now meet May 18 at 6 p.m. at Peccole Park. SCHAFER S HOT BAT LEADS AGGIES Junior Justin Schafer went 10-for-21 in UC Davis five nonconference games last week, batting.476 and scoring six runs and posting one RBI... Schafer recorded multiple hits in all five games, including four doubles... The Los Gatos native struck out only twice and recorded a stolen base... He owns a five-game hit streak, the most of any Aggie, and jumped from a.290 batting average prior to Tuesday s game against San Francisco to a.320 average... The four doubles he recorded now ties him for the team-lead at 12 this season and he leads the team in hits (41), runs (29), and total bases (56). LEWIS EMERGING AS AGGIES CLOSER Junior RHP Matthew Lewis has recorded four saves in four appearances for UC Davis... He picked up his first save in a 3-2 win over Long Beach State Apr. 9 after he replaced Dayne Quist and struck out the remaining two batters of the inning... In the very next game, Lewis preserved a 10-8 Aggie victory over the Dirtbags Apr. 10 by striking out two of the three batters he faced... Lewis returned Apr. 14 and forced the three San Jose State batters he faced into a fly out, a ground out, and a foul out to give UC Davis the 2-1 win... Most recently, Lewis stepped in against Cal State Bakersfield Friday... Despite walking his first batter then giving up a hit, Lewis forced the next Roadrunner to fly out before striking out the final two batters for the win... In his last four appearances, Lewis has faced 11 batters and has given up only two hits and one run while striking out six and walking one. HIT ME At 6-foot-5, sophomore first baseman Eric Johnson has been hit by a pitch 14 times... In games through April 11, Johnson ranks second in the Big West and 32nd nationally... He also ranks 29th nationally in hit by pitch per game statistics with 0.44 hits per contest. AGGIES AMONGST BIG WEST LEADERS As a team, UC Davis is batting.301 which is fifth in the Big West Conference... Individually, David Popkins currently owns the conference s best on base percentage (.504) and is fifth in batting average (.394)... Eric Johnson is second in the hit by pitch category with Freshman Seth Batty has posted 10 stolen bases which ranks him fifth... On the mound, Dayne Quist s opposing batting average of.245 is sixth and he ranks fifth in innings pitched (59.2)... His 47 strikeouts are sixth-best and he has struck out 19 batters looking, tying him for second with UC Irvine s Christian Bergman... Quist has picked off four runners, second most in the conference... Matthew Lewis four saves are tied for second with two others. UC DAVIS IN THE NATIONAL SCENE Eric Johnson is 29th nationally in hit by pitch per game (0.44) and 32nd in hit by pitch (14)... Scott Heylman has recorded four sacrifice flies, placing him 69th... David Popkins on base percentage is 62nd. STEALING THE SHOW True freshman Seth Batty stole a season-high three bases Apr. 14 against San Jose State... He now leads the team with 10 stolen bases in 11 attempts. WEATHER WOES UC Davis was forced to shift another home series due to inclement weather in the Davis area... The Aggies and Long Beach State played a doubleheader Apr. 10 in order to beat the rain forecast for Apr UC Davis has now played three doubleheaders this season due to the rain and are 3-3 in doubleheader games... The second and third games of the Utah series were combined into a doubleheader Feb. 20 as were the first and second games of the BYU series Feb The final game against BYU was split over two days as the Feb. 26 game was called in the fifth inning due to rain.. The game resumed and was completed Saturday, Feb The Feb. 23 matchup at Cal was moved to Feb. 24 because of heavy rain in Berkeley... Most recently, the Mar. 3 game against Stanford was moved to Mar. 4 to accomodate rain. SCOTT LYMAN, DOUBLE THREAT Sophomore Scott Lyman continues to pose a double threat for UC Davis as a designated hitter and a pitcher... WATSON LEADS AGGIES TO 2-1 WIN OVER SAN JOSE STATE Sean Watson pitched 7.1 innings and gave up only one run on four hits to lead UC Davis to a 2-1 nonconference victory over San Jose State Wednesday at Dobbins Stadium... The senior lefty threw just 74 pitches and did not give up a walk while on the mound for the Aggies... In addition, Watson forced San Jose State into 17 ground outs and held the Spartans hitless from the top of the third inning until the seventh inning. SAN FRANCISCO POWERS PAST UC DAVIS UC Davis saw strong hitting from several Aggies, but the San Francisco bats proved too much as the Dons took an 18-5 victory in a nonconference matchup Tuesday at Dobbins Stadium... The UC Davis offense was led by Scott Heylman who went 2-for-3 and knocked in four of the Aggies five runs... In the second inning, Heylman brought in both Aggie runs with a single to right field, then knocked in two more for UC Davis in the sixth with a single up the middle with two men on. TITANS SWEEP SERIES IN FULLERTON UC Davis opened Big West Conference play on the road against Cal State Fullerton, but dropped all three games at Goodwin Field... Scott Lyman had the best outing on the mound Sunday going 7.0 innings and giving up three earned runs on nine hits... David Popkins posted four hits, four RBI, a double and one run... Scott Heylman went 5-for-8 with three runs and an RBI. UC DAVIS EDGES SAINT MARY S IN FINAL INNING UC Davis took a 5-4 win over Saint Mary s Tuesday at Dobbins Stadium after David Popkins ground ball to second base allowed Justin Schafer to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth... Schafer went 4-for-5 on the day... Saint Mary s jumped to a quick 2-0 lead but the UC Davis pitching staff found a rhythm and held Saint Mary s scoreless for the final five innings of the game. UC DAVIS PICKED TO FINISH NINTH IN BIG WEST PRESEASON POLL In only their third season at the Division I level, UC Davis was selected to finish ninth in the Big West Conference preseason poll which is conducted by the league s nine head coaches... Cal State Fullerton received seven first-place votes and were followed by UC Irvine who picked up two-first place votes... Rounding out the top three was Cal Poly in third... Long Beach State was chosen to finish fourth while UC Riverside landed in fifth and UC Santa Barbara took the sixth spot... Pacific, Cal State Northridge and UC Davis completed the field. UC DAVIS SIGNS TWO PITCHERS Matt Nichol and Craig Lanza have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Aggies for the 2011 season... Nichol led Serra High School to the 2009 Central Coast Section Championship with a 6-1 record on the mound and a 3.23 ERA with 36 strikeouts...
