First pitch for both games is set for : p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. SPARTANS SWEPT AT FRESNO STATE San José State had a rough go of it in Fresno last weekend, dropping the three-game set by scores of -, - and -. On Friday, the Spartans got the go-ahead run on board in the ninth inning despite collecting only two hits in the last six innings. A seven-run third inning did the damage in Friday's loss, with a pair of Spartan errors prolonging the inning. San José State battled back to tie the series finale - but missed opportunities to take the lead in the late innings, leaving men aboard on the afternoon. NEVADA VISITS MUNICIPAL STADIUM THIS WEEKEND The Spartans will get their first glimpse of the Nevada Wolfpack this weekend when the Mountain West co-leaders visit Municipal Stadium for a three-game set. 2 Dave Nakama Head Coach rd Season Willamette, Dave Nakama was appointed as head baseball coach of the Spartans in September. Under Nakama, the Spartans posted the fourth-highest batting average (.), the third-highest fielding percentage (.) and the second-fewest errors () in the Western Athletic Conference in and the second-highest fielding percentage (.) in the Mountain West in. Nakama came to San José State from the University of Washington, where he was the associate head baseball coach for three seasons. In a -plus year college coaching career, the Honolulu, Hawai'i, native has seasons of experience in the Pac- Conference divided between Washington (-) and Stanford (-, -). A proven talent developer, Nakama has seen of his former players drafted professionally. Of those, have gone on to play in the major leagues, including current big-leaguers Jason Castro, John Mayberry Jr., Carlos Quentin and Jed Lowrie. Four times from -, Baseball America rated Stanford's recruiting classes in the top nationally. Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball ranked Washington's class among the best in the West. In his seasons at Stanford, the Cardinal won four Pac- Championships, five NCAA Regional crowns and appeared in the College World Series four times (,,, and ). During Nakama's tenure, Stanford recorded their five best defensive seasons, including a program high. fielding percentage in. Nakama has head coaching experience at San Jose's Mission College (-) and three seasons at San Francisco State (-). In five seasons at Mission College, his teams qualified for the and California Community College state championships. He was the Coast Conference Coach of the Year. The graduate of Willamette University in Salem, Ore., earned his master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado in. As a college player, Nakama was an infielder for the Willamette Bearcats. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Northern Colorado in and worked at the University of Iowa, Yavapai College (Prescott, Ariz.) and DeAnza College. BAUTISTA NAMED SAN JOSÉ STATE FEBRUARY STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE MONTH Sophomore outfielder/designated hitter Brett Bautista was one of two February Spartan Foundation Student-Athletes of the Month, presented by ScholarShare. Bautista hit. (- for-) and reached base safely in all eight games during the month of February. He drew seven walks and had three multi-hit games, including two three-hit performances. NEW FACES ALL AROUND San José State fields one of the youngest teams in the country in. MERCURIO A VETERAN IN THE FIELD Through March, senior center fielder Andre Mercurio has games played under his belt. The San Mateo, Calif., resident and Serra High School product owns a. career batting average in at-bats with a. fielding percentage patrolling the outfield. A second-team All-Mountain West selection after making all starts that season, Mercurio was hampered by a wrist injury in that forced him to miss games early in the year and limited him to just starts. Mercurio and Kalei Contrades represent the only players on the roster in their fourth year at San José State, with Myles Richard, the third senior on the Spartans, transferring from Mount Hood Community College before the season. CONTRADES EARNS PAIR OF PRESEASON AWARDS Senior right-hander Kalei Contrades was one of two pitchers to be named to the Mountain West Preseason All-Conference Team, as voted on by the conference's head coaches, in addition to being selected to the Perfect Game Preseason All-Mountain West team. Contrades is coming off a stellar junior campaign in which he appeared in games, making seven starts, and posted a - record with a. ERA in. innings. TOM KUNIS RETURNS TO SAN JOSÉ STATE AS PITCHING COACH Tom Kunis, an assistant on former skipper Sam Piraro's staff from - and -, returns for a third stint and an eighth season with the Spartans in. Kunis and head coach Dave Nakama coached together for six seasons (-) at Stanford under Mark Marquess, where the pair aided the Cardinal to two Pac- conference titles and five NCAA Tournament appearances, including three Super Regional appearances and two College World Series berths. In his years of coaching, of Kunis' pitchers have been drafted professionally.
