TBA All times local to site * = Western Athletic Conference game MOVING FORWARD: Seattle University enters May in the middle of a seven-game road swing, as the Redhawks make the first of probably two trips to Arizona, this time facing Grand Canyon University in a three-game series at Brazell Stadium in Phoenix. Seattle U is close to mathematically clinching its spot in the WAC Tournament, to be held at Hohokam Stadium in Mesa, Ariz., May The Redhawks look to remain at the top of the WAC standings, and a series victory over the current leaders will accomplish that goal. THE BAKERSFIELD SERIES: For the second straight weekend, Seattle University lost two of three games in a conference weekend series, this time at Bakersfield. In Friday s series-opening game, Bakersfield s Hayden Carter scattered nine hits in throwing a complete game shutout, as Seattle U stranded nine runners on base and committed five errors in the Roadrunners 5-0 victory. The next day, the Redhawk bats came alive, but the pitching could not hold down the Bakersfield offense, as the Roadrunners earned a 10-5 victory. Seattle U closed to within one at 6-5 with three runs in the top of the eighth inning, but Bakersfield put four runs on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Colin Peterson led Seattle U with a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored and an RBI. Sunday, Tarik Skubal started for the Redhawks and allowed just two hits and two walks in six innings while tying his season high with eight strikeouts. Grant Gunning and Garrett Anderson followed Skubal to the hill and preserved the shutout in the Redhawks 4-0 victory. Grant Newton led the Redhawk offense with a 2-for-3 performance with a walk, while Griffin Andreychuk and Brian Olson both reached base three times with one hit and two walks apiece. WEATHER FORECAST: Typical desert weather awaits the Redhawks in Phoenix. For the night games, temperatures will dip into the 70s under clear skies with winds picking up a little bit Saturday night. Mainly sunny skies are forecast for Sunday with temperatures moving into the 90s. STATISTICALLY SPEAKING: In the NCAA statistical rankings released Wednesday, April 29, Skyler Genger is 21st in the country with 83 total strikeouts. Landon Cray is ninth on the toughest to strikeout list, striking out once every 19.5 plate appearances. As a team, Seattle U is 29th in the country in triples with 15 and 38th in stolen bases with 63.

3 SCOUTING GRAND CANYON: The Antelopes enter the weekend series with a overall record after sweeping two games from nationally-ranked Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, 5-4 and Grand Canyon has moved to the top of the WAC standings with a 13-4 league mark after winning two of three games at Utah Valley last weekend. The Antelopes have not lost a home conference game so far this season, sweeping North Dakota, Texas-Pan American, and Northern Colorado. As a team, Grand Canyon has combined for a.308 batting average, a.967 fielding percentage, and a 4.74 earned run average. Paul Panaccione enters the weekend leading the team with a.394 batting average, 71 hits, and 47 runs scored. Chad De La Guerra, the preseason WAC Player of the Year, is hitting.318 with seven doubles, nine home runs, and 42 runs batted in. Garrison Schwartz and Brandon Smith are tied for the team lead with three triples, with Schwartz leading the way with 10 doubles, Smith earning a team-high 10 stolen bases, and David Walker drawing 31 walks to lead the Antelopes. Out of the bullpen, Travis Garcia-Perreira leads the team with 21 appearances, posting a 1-0 record with a 2.78 earned run average and one save as he has struck out 23 batters in 22 2/3 innings of work. Mick Vorhof has three saves to go along with a 4-0 record and a 3.37 ERA in 19 appearances. LAST SEASON: Seattle University and Grand Canyon met for the first time ever during a three-game series May 2-4 at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue. With threatening weather in the forecast, the teams played a doubleheader on the first day of the series. Grand Canyon cruised to a 12-2 victory in the first game of the doubleheader, scoring three four runs in the second inning to take the lead for good. With the score 9-2, the Antelopes scored three more runs in the eighth inning and prevented the Redhawks from scoring in the bottom of the inning to end the game after eight innings due to the WAC 10-run rule. Brian Olson hit a home run in the second inning of the second game, and Skyler Genger kept the Lopes off the board until the eighth inning, when he gave up an unearned run to tie the game. In the bottom of the eighth, Cullen Hendrickson s double drove in Brock Carpenter with the go-ahead run, and Garrett Anderson shut down Grand Canyon in the ninth inning to clinch the victory. The rubber game spanned two days due to rain, with Grand Canyon taking a 7-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning before play was halted. Seattle U bounced back the next day, cutting its deficit to 7-4 after six innings before Grand Canyon put the game away with two runs in the eighth inning and one in the ninth inning. The Antelopes won 10-6 in a game that featured 26 hits, five errors, and 24 runners stranded on base. NEIGHBORLY CONTRIBUTION: Sophomore Griffin Andreychuk from Nanaimo, British Columbia, has become one of Seattle U s top hitters this season. He leads the team with 15 multiple-hit games and eighth multiple-rbi games. He brings a five-game hitting streak and a 15-game reaching base safely streak into this weekend s games. He is batting.298 and leads the team with 48 hits and 29 runs batted in. In WAC games, Andreychuk is batting.338 with team-high totals in runs batted in (19) and walks (12). WAC TOURNAMENT: For the second straight season, the WAC Baseball Tournament will take place in a new spring training complex in Mesa, Ariz. as the 2015 championship heads to the new Hohokam Stadium, preseason home of the Oakland Athletics. The top six teams from the WAC s regular season standings will advance to the tournament. THE LEADER OF THE REDHAWKS: Donny Harrel is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Seattle University baseball program. He led the team s continued improvement from 11 wins in 2010 to 21 wins in 2011 to 23 wins in Although the squad took a small step back in terms of victories in 2013, Harrel saw his first four-year class graduate that spring. Last year, the team won 26 games, the most since the program was reintstated in 2008 and the third-most all-time. Harrel earned his 100th victory as a head coach against Bakersfield May 15, At the University of Washington as an assistant coach for four seasons, Harrel was not only responsible for assisting in onfield coaching, but he also was responsible for the Huskies schedule and assisted with travel issues, budgeting, and helping student-athletes through the admissions process. He also oversaw the team s academic performance and was named Academic Coach of the Quarter in Winter 2007 when the team broke a 14-year record for highest cumulative grade point average. His head coaching experience comes from seven seasons at Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore., where he compiled a record and led the team to the NWAACC championship in Named NWAACC Southern Division Coach of the Year four times, he also led fundraising efforts to build a field, improve other facilities, buy equipment, and increase scholarship opportunities. 4 PRESEASON EXPECTATIONS: In the preseason coach s poll, Seattle U was picked to finish fourth in the WAC. Senior catcher Brian Olson and junior outfielder Landon Cray, First Team All-WAC honorees last season, were selected by the coaches as part of the Preseason All-WAC Team. Seattle U is one of four teams, along with Sacramento State, Grand Canyon, and Bakersfield, to have multiple representatives on the preseason squad. Defending WAC regular season and tournament champion Sacramento State received eight first-place votes and 80 total points as the Hornets were selected as the preseason favorite to win the conference in Grand Canyon received the other two first-place votes to finish in second place in the poll with 71 points, with Bakersfield collecting 60 points to come in third place. With 49 points, Seattle U finished just ahead of fifth place Utah Valley, who received 48 points in the poll. New Mexico State and Texas-Pan American ended up in a tie for sixth place with 45 points apiece. Chicago State (19 points), North Dakota (17 points), and Northern Colorado (16 points) rounded out the preseason poll results. Second baseman Chad De La Guerra of Grand Canyon was selected as the WAC Preseason Player of the Year, while Sacramento State s Brennan Leitao received WAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year honors. NEW GROUND TO PLAY ON: Thanks to a partnership between the Seattle University Athletics Department and the City of Bellevue, a new turf playing surface has been installed on the infield at Bannerwood Park, including the mound and the first- and third-base lines. In addition, more drainage has been added to the outfield, making it more likely that all Seattle U home baseball games will be played at Bannerwood Park no matter what the weather conditions are. Thanks to the efforts of everyone involved, the project moved quickly, with city approvals coming in October and the first shovels entering the dirt in November. LIGHT IT UP: Major League Baseball and the Seattle Mariners invited the Redhawk baseball team to hold a practice and scrimmage at Safeco Field on Wednesday, Feb. 4, in order to test the new LED lighting system, the first one of its kind to be installed at a MLB ballpark. The players raved about the new lights, telling MLB and Mariner officials that it was easier to see the ball both at the plate and in the field. SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENTS: Due to other commitments at Bannerwood Park, the Seattle U home games Saturday, May 9, against Chicago State and Monday, May 11, against Pacific will take place at Courter Field on the campus of Bellevue College.
