Seattle U plays eight of its first nine games at home and will have stretches of 12 consecutive games from March 3 to March 22 and 13 straight games from April 1 through April 21 without needing to board an airplane for any of its contests. The coaches hope that the reduced travel will help the team, especially down the stretch when the Redhawks will be contending for a spot in the WAC Baseball Tournament and a berth in the NCAA Tournament by winning the conference tournament. RECAPPING THE 2014 SEASON: Seattle University finished the 2014 campaign with a record, the most victories for the Redhawks since baseball returned as a varsity sport and the third-highest single-season total in the history of the program. Seattle U qualified for the WAC Baseball Tournament, the first Division I postseason action for the team in 60 years. Landon Cray earned First Team All-WAC honors after once again leading the Redhawks in batting with a.350 average, while fellow First Team All-WAC honoree Brian Olson batted.320 with 47 runs batted in. On the mound, Will Dennis led the way with a 6-5 record and a 3.25 earned run average. Among Seattle U s victories were two wins over nationally-ranked Washington as well as a win over then-ninth ranked Cal Poly and intrastate rival Washington State. WEATHER FORECAST: Forecasters are calling for the weather to clear up during the weekend, giving the teams a chance to open the 2015 season. Considerable cloudiness on Friday will give way to a mix of sun and clouds on Saturday and mainly sunny skies on Sunday. Temperatures should be in the 50s for the majority of the weekend with very little wind. SEASON TICKETS: General admission season tickets for Seattle University baseball at Bannerwood Park are now available for just $50. Fans can also buy chairback seats as season tickets for $100. Single game tickets will cost $10 each for chairback seats, $7 apiece for adult bleacher seats, and $5 each for youth or senior citizens. 3 SCOUTING SAINT MARY S: The Gaels open the 2015 season after posting a overall record last season, including an 8-19 mark within the West Coast Conference. Saint Mary s opened WCC play with a 5-1 record, but the Gaels then suffered through a 16-game losing streak and won only three of their final 29 contests. As a team, Saint Mary s combined for a.264 batting average, a.965 fielding percentage, and a 4.71 earned run average. Anthony Gonsolin is the team s leading returning player after batting.308 last season with 64 hits, including nine doubles, eight triples, and two home runs, 37 runs scored, 24 runs batted in, 22 walks, and eight stolen bases. Catcher Nate Nolan is back after hitting a team-high five home runs last season. On the mound, Cameron Neff returns to the starting rotation after pitching five complete games in SERIES HISTORY: Seattle U and Saint Mary s did not meet until baseball was reinstated as an NCAA varsity sport by Seattle U. The teams split a four-game series at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue in 2010, with Saint Mary s winning the first (10-9) and fourth games (13-1) of the series and the Redhawks taking the middle two contests, 12-6 and 5-4. In 2011 in Moraga, the Gaels took the first three games of the four-game weekend series: 3-0, 8-6, and 7-4. Seattle U salvaged the final game of the series with a 7-3 victory. THE LEADER OF THE REDHAWKS: Donny Harrel is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Seattle University baseball program. He led the team s continued improvement from 11 wins in 2010 to 21 wins in 2011 to 23 wins in Although the squad took a small step back in terms of victories in 2013, Harrel saw his first four-year class graduate that spring. Last year, the team won 26 games, the most since the program was reintstated in 2008 and the third-most all-time. Harrel earned his 100th victory as a head coach against Bakersfield May 15, At the University of Washington as an assistant coach for four seasons, Harrel was not only responsible for assisting in onfield coaching, but he also was responsible for the Huskies schedule and assisted with travel issues, budgeting, and helping student-athletes through the admissions process. He also oversaw the team s academic performance and was named Academic Coach of the Quarter in Winter 2007 when the team broke a 14-year record for highest cumulative grade point average. His head coaching experience comes from seven seasons at Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore., where he compiled a record and led the team to the NWAACC championship in Named NWAACC Southern Division Coach of the Year four times, he also led fundraising efforts to build a field, improve other facilities, buy equipment, and increase scholarship opportunities. PRESEASON EXPECTATIONS: In the preseason coach s poll, Seattle U was picked to finish fourth in the WAC. Senior catcher Brian Olson and junior outfielder Landon Cray, First Team All-WAC honorees last season, were selected by the coaches as part of the Preseason All-WAC Team. Seattle U is one of four teams, along with Sacramento State, Grand Canyon, and Bakersfield, to have multiple representatives on the preseason squad. Defending WAC regular season and tournament champion Sacramento State received eight first-place votes and 80 total points as the Hornets were selected as the preseason favorite to win the conference in Grand Canyon received the other two first-place votes to finish in second place in the poll with 71 points, with Bakersfield collecting 60 points to come in third place. With 49 points, Seattle U finished just ahead of fifth place Utah Valley, who received 48 points in the poll. New Mexico State and Texas-Pan American ended up in a tie for sixth place with 45 points apiece. Chicago State (19 points), North Dakota (17 points), and Northern Colorado (16 points) rounded out the preseason poll results. Second baseman Chad De La Guerra of Grand Canyon was selected as the WAC Preseason Player of the Year, while Sacramento State s Brennan Leitao received WAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year honors. NEW GROUND TO PLAY ON: Thanks to a partnership between the Seattle University Athletics Department and the City of Bellevue, a new turf playing surface has been installed on the infield at Bannerwood Park, including the mound and the first- and third-base lines. In addition, more drainage has been added to the outfield, making it more likely that all Seattle U home baseball games will be played at Bannerwood Park no matter what the weather conditions are. Thanks to the efforts of everyone involved, the project moved quickly, with city approvals coming in October and the first shovels entering the dirt in November. LIGHT IT UP: Major League Baseball and the Seattle Mariners invited the Redhawk baseball team to hold a practice and scrimmage at Safeco Field on Wednesday, Feb. 4, in order to test the new LED lighting system, the first one of its kind to be installed at a MLB ballpark. The players raved about the new lights, telling MLB and Mariner officials that it was easier to see the ball both at the plate and in the field. Seattle University Sports Information Director... 4 2015 PREVIEW FROM COACH DONNY HARREL I am truly looking forward to the start of this season. After taking positive steps over the past five years in the program, I feel we are upon a culture change this season where we top that 30-win mark. Our pitching is deeper than it has ever been, we return quite a bit of our offense, and our defense should be much better than last season. It all starts on the mound. We have a lot of guys competing for that weekend starting rotation. Will Dennis comes back as our Most Valuable Pitcher in 2014 as voted by his teammates and should find his way right back into the weekend rotation. Skyler Genger really came on in the 2nd half of 2014 and gave us consistent starts. Though Skyler is not overpowering he really knows how to pitch and keeps his defense in the game. Grant Gunning has a bunch of starts under his belt, so our ability to match up against right-handed or left-handed lineups is a nice option to have. Freshmen Tarik Skubal and Janson Junk showed their ability to throw three pitches for strikes and really progressed in the fall and winter, so they each will compete to get time up front in the rotations. Where I truly feel we are different this year is in our bullpen. Anyone of those potential starters provide us great guys in a long relief situation. We are also able to match up well against left-handed hitters with Kyle Doyle, David Marshall, and Nick Meservey showing they can spin the breaking ball against those types of hitters. Ky Dye, Ryan Freitas, and Ted Hammond have the ability to get righthanded hitters out, so we can match up well against lineups throughout the game. Our options at the end of the game match up better than ever as well. Garrett Anderson gives us experience, smarts, and maturity in a closing type roll, and newcomer Chris Carns provides a power arm with some of his pitches this fall reaching up to 94 mph. Both were 1st Team ALL-WAC selections. We also return starting shortstop Griffin Andreychuk, starting third baseman and Rookie of the Year Brock Carpenter, and utility players Grant Newton and Michael McCann. One early season loss comes with the surgery to second baseman Cash McGuire who has numerous starts in his first two seasons. McGuire will be out until April, so Shelton Stober, Curtis Perrin, and Anthony Gosline will compete to get innings. Freshman Sean Sutton will compete for time at first base and as a designated hitter. The outfield lost another tremendous center fielder to graduation in Chase Fields. Fields, who ended his career last spring going 7-7 in the WAC Tournament, followed previous graduates Marcelino Morales and Doug Buser, who combined over the last 5 years to have just 2 errors in center field. Cray will move to center field to start the season, but Nelson Taylor and TJ Byrne bring plenty of speed to the position and will fight for innings. Colin Peterson will return in right field and provide experience, while Eric Koenig, Dalton Hurd, Byrne, McCann and Taylor look to fill time in the outfield as well. All-WAC player Olson returns as the catcher, but time will also be competed for by McCann, Newton, and newcomer Jack Reisinger.
