Seattle U begins a week-long Spring Break trip with three games at Louisiana Tech Saturday through Monday. The Redhawks hope to continue their stretch of winning weekend series after earning two of three games from UC Davis for their third straight series victory. LAST WEEK: After playing just three of its first 16 games at home, Seattle U opened a scheduled fivegame homestand by scoring seven runs in the first inning and two more in the second inning to cruise to a 13-7 victory over Saint Martin s last Tuesday. Chris Jaeger went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three runs batted in, while Landon Cray and Nick Latta picked up two hits apiece and Sean Narby scored three runs and drove in three runs. Skyler Genger pitched the first five innings, allowing just one earned run as he finally earned his first collegiate victory. After Wednesday s game against Portland was postponed until April 3 due to rain, UC Davis came to town for a three-game set. To beat anticipated rain on Saturday, the teams agreed to play a doubleheader Friday. UC Davis jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first game of the twinbill and held on for a 7-4 victory. In game two, the Aggies used a five-run seventh and a two-run eighth to extend their advantage to 9-5, but the Redhawks responded with five runs in the bottom of the eighth and held on for a 10-9 win. Seattle U improved its record on Sundays to 4-1 with a 3-2 victory, once again coming from behind for the win. 3 SCOUTING LOUISIANA TECH: The Bulldogs are 9-14 after defeating Arkansas-Little Rock Tuesday, 4-3, and Alcorn State Wednesday, 9-1. The Bulldogs are 7-4 at home, winning two of three games over both Nebraska and Stephen F. Austin over the past two weekends. As a team, Louisiana Tech has compiled a.242 batting average, a.961 fielding percentage, and a 3.37 earned run average. At the plate, Ryan Gebhardt leads the team with 25 hits and six doubles, while Tyler Ervine has 23 hits, including one home run, and 14 runs scored. These will be the first meetings all time between Seattle U and Louisiana Tech on the baseball field. AROUND THE WAC: This marks the first of nine straight weekends of Western Athletic Conference baseball, as each of the 10 teams will play 27 league games between now and May 18. Besides Seattle U-Louisiana Tech, CSU Bakersfield, currently with the best non-conference record in the league, travels north to face Sacramento State. It will be a battle of Texas state schools when UT Arlington heads to San Antonio to take on UTSA, and preseason conference favorite Dallas Baptist makes the trip west to take on San Jose State. Also, Texas State heads to Las Cruces, N.M., for a three-game series against New Mexico State, a team that shared the regular season crown last season with Sacramento State and Nevada. WEATHER FORECAST: The weekend in Ruston begins with a forecast of scattered thunderstorms Saturday with temperatures in the high 60s. Skies are scheduled to clear in time for Sunday s contest, bringing about partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid 60s. Monday calls for mostly clear skies with temperatures starting out in the low 60s before falling into the 50s. BROADCAST INFORMATION: Due to a prior commitment, Dan Giuliani is unable to accompany the team on the Spring Break road trip to Louisiana Tech and Texas State. COACHING: Donny Harrel has been able to maintain consistency within his coaching staff, with assistant coach Casey Powell and pitching coach Dave Wainhouse back with the program. Also returning is director of baseball operations Jeff James, now in his second year at Seattle U. The one newcomer is Mike Nadeau, who takes over as the volunteer assistant coach after three seasons as the head coach at Pierce College, where he compiled a overall record. THE LEADER OF THE REDHAWKS: Donny Harrel is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Seattle University baseball program. He has led the team s continued improvement from 11 wins in 2010 to 21 wins in 2011 to last season s total of 23 wins. At the University of Washington as an assistant coach for four seasons, Harrel was not only responsible for assisting in on-field coaching, but he also was responsible for the Huskies schedule and assisted with travel issues, budgeting, and helping student-athletes through the admissions process. He also oversaw the team s academic performance and was named Academic Coach of the Quarter in Winter 2007 when the team broke a 14-year record for highest cumulative grade point average. His head coaching experience comes from seven seasons at Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore., where he compiled a record and led the team to the NWAACC championship in Named NWAACC Southern Division Coach of the Year four times, he also led fundraising efforts to build a field, improve other facilities, buy equipment, and increase scholarship opportunities. WESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE: Seattle University begins its first season as a member of the Western Athletic Conference after spending the past three years as a Division I independent. The Redhawks will face the other nine teams in the league in three-game series for a total of 27 conference games. Seattle U will host UTSA, UT Arlington, Sacramento State, and New Mexico State while traveling to Louisiana Tech, Texas State, Dallas Baptist, San Jose State, and CSU Bakersfield. The top eight teams in the 10-team league will advance to the WAC Baseball Tournament May at QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. The eight teams will be split into two pools of four, with each team playing a round-robin format of three games within each pool over the first four days. The best record in each pool will face off in the title game on Sunday, May 26.
