Utah State s offense was led by senior infielder Christine Thomsen who delivered a.600 batting average through the four games last week, while senior pitcher Mandy Harmon took control in the circle striking out eight Roadrunner batters en route to a complete game shutout. Unpredictable April showers played a roll in last weekends games as rain fall forced the scheduled home games to be played at the Barnes Sports Complex in Kaysville, Utah. Two games were originally slated for Friday in Kaysville, but after two-outs in the top of the first inning play was halted due to darkness. Utah State will look to ride last weeks momentum into a full slate of games this week, opening with an in-state meeting on Tuesday, April 9 with Utah Valley in Orem. First pitch of Tuesday s game is set to be delivered at 4 p.m. (MT). USU is set to host in-state foe Brigham Young on Wednesday, April 10 in the friendly confines of LaRee and LeGrand Johnson field, weather permitting, with action getting underway at 4 p.m. (MT). Following their early week action, the Aggies will pack their bags and head north to Seattle to continue WAC play against Seattle U in a three-game series. Opening weekend action will be a doubleheader on Friday, April 12, set to get underway at 2 p.m. (MT). SERIES HISTORY - vs. Utah Valley - Tuesday s meeting will be the 24th meeting between Utah State and Utah Valley. USU holds the advantage, 15-8, in the series history between the two teams. UVU is having one of its best seasons in recent history, posting a overall record this season.

Last season the Aggies captured the lone meeting against the Wolverines, 8-7, in Logan on April 10, vs. BYU - Wednesday s match-up will mark the 60th meeting between the two in-state rivals with the Cougars holding a all-time series lead. BYU is this season. Last season, Brigham Young was a member of the WAC and took threegames from the Aggies in Provo, as part of the conference schedule. vs. Seattle U - Utah State has met Seattle once before in program history in 2010, the teams met in the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah. USU took the lone meeting, 4-3. The Redhawks are this season. THE.300 CLUB - The Aggies have three hitters with a.300 batting average or higher this season. Leading the way is senior infielder Christine Thomsen with a.364 batting average, following up Thomsen is sophomore outfielder Hailey Froton, who is hitting.313. Junior outfielder Kassandra Uchida is also batting.303. Utah State s bats are heating up in conference action as USU has four players who have tallied a.300 batting average or better in conference games. Froton leads her squad with a.400 batting average in conference play. Following her is Uchida with a.333 average, which is the same mark as freshman pitcher Noelle Johnson. Right at the.300 mark is sophomore outfielder Jolene Koons. STRONG IN THE CIRCLE - Senior pitcher Mandy Harmon put together her best outing of the season from the circle with a performance that began on Friday, April 5 and concluded on Saturday, April 6. Harmon opened the second game of Friday s doubleheader in Kaysville by striking out the first two batters she faced. She was not able to continue the inning as action was called due to darkness. The senior picked up right where she left off to conclude the game she started on Friday by working seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out eight Roadrunner batters. It was only Harmon s second shutout of her career, and it was the 21st complete games she has tossed in a Utah State uniform. AGGIES IN THE WAC - Utah State s pitching staff ranks towards the top of the WAC rankings for strikeouts per game. USU is currently averaging 5.47 strikeouts per game, which is second-best in the conference. Senior infielder Christine Thomsen is tied for fifth in overall season batting average in the WAC, as the senior has tallied a.364 average. Her on-base percentage of.425 is also the eighth-best in the conference. Sophomore outfielder Hailey Froton is in the top of several statistical categories in the conference. She has three triples this season, tying her for the most in the conference and is averaging 0.10 triples per game, which is the second-best mark in the WAC. 2 U t a h S t a t e S o f t b a l l

Froton is also tied for seventh in batting average in conference games, with a.400 batting average and a 1.25 hits per game average, which is the fifth-highest mark in conference.

She also has not struckout in a WAC game this season. Sophomore outfielder Jolene Koons has nabbed three stolen bases in conference action, tying her for the third most stolen bases. She is averaging 0.33 steals per game. Both starting pitchers for Utah State rank in the top-10 in the WAC in several categories. Senior pitcher Mandy Harmon and freshman pitcher Noelle Johnson are both in the top 10 for batters struckout and batter struckout looking. Harmon has struckout 28 batters looking this season, landing her with the third-most in the conference. Johnson lands just behind Harmon with 22 batter struckout looking putting her with the seventh-most in the conference. In WAC games, Harmon is limiting the opposing batters, as the senior has only allowed a.148 batting average to the opponents she has faced. Johnson has recorded 86 total strikeouts this season, which is the fourth most by a WAC pitcher. While Harmon has recorded 72 strikeouts which is good for eighth-best in the WAC. Senior pitcher Shelbi Tyteca has appeared in 29 games in relief of a starting pitcher and has finished 26 games this season. Both are highmarks for pitchers in the WAC. Tyteca has also only allowed three homeruns against her while in the circle, which is tied for the second-fewest by a pitcher in the WAC. Two Utah State softball players garnered preseason honors from the WAC. The conference office announced the 2013 Preseason all-wac team, as selected by the leagues eight coaches, which included USU s senior infielder Christine Thomsen as well as sophomore outfielder Hailey Froton. AND THEN THERE WAS ONE - Utah State softball and the Tyteca family name has been synonymous with each other in the last six seasons. She is also the only Tyteca on roster this season. Last season Bailee Tyteca appeared in three games as a freshman making it three-consecutive season s with two Tyteca sisters on the roster. SAVE-ABLE SHELBI - Senior pitcher Shelbi Tyteca recorded her first save of the season against Idaho State on March 16, in the SpringHill Suites Invitational. 4 LEGGING IT OUT - Sophomore outfielder Hailey Froton recorded her third triple of the season on Friday, March 22 in a game against San Jose State, with a hard hit ball down the right field line scoring her teammate sophomore infielder Nicole Arata from first. The sophomore leads her team in triples and is currently tied with two other players for the most triples in the WAC. Junior outfielder Rachael Hunsaker and junior infielder Becca Walker are the only other Utah State players to record a triple this season. AGGIES MATCHING UP AGAINST THE BEST - The NFCA released its updated national standings on Tuesday, April 2, Utah State has faced five nationally ranked teams this season. USU was defeated by No. 6 Tennessee in the Red Desert Classic on Feb 8, 10-0 (5). In the Hillenbrand Invitational, the Aggies were defeated by No. 19 Arizona, 13-1 (5) on Feb. 17. Utah State was also defeated, 9-0 (6), by this weeks No. 22 team, Nebraska. USU also faced two more ranked teams in the Texas Invitational. The Aggies lost a pair of games to No. 20 Tulsa, dropping the first game on Feb. 22, 8-0 (5), and losing the second match-up on Feb. 23, 3-0. Utah State also locked horns with No. 8 Texas in the Texas Invitational on Feb. 23, the Longhorns defeated USU, 13-2 (5). EXTRA-ORDINARY - Utah State has needed extra-innings in three games this season and is currently 2-1 in extra-inning affairs. In their first game with extra-innings against Boise State, the Aggies rallied to score three runs in the top of the sixth-inning to take a 3-2 lead headed into the final frame. BSU responded with a single run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, sending it into extras. Utah State came out on top, scoring two runs in the top of the eighth and holding Boise State s offense in check to take the game, 5-3. Trailing by five runs to Portland State in the bottom of the seventh inning, USU rallied to score five runs in the final frame to force extra-innings. The Aggies capitalized on the opportunity, scoring the games winning run in the bottom of the eighth frame. Last weekend, Utah State found itself in a scoreless showdown with New Mexico State. After seven scoreless innings action headed into extras, where NM State erupted for five runs in the top the seventh and went on to take the game, 5-2. NEW FACES IN THE WAC - The WAC added four teams for the 2013 softball season, Seattle University, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State. Utah State will square off against UTSA and Texas State for the first time in program history this season. USU defeated Seattle U in the 2010 season to hold a 1-0 series advantage over SU. The Aggies likewise hold a 1-0 series advantage against UT Arlington, defeating the Mavericks in PRESEASON WAC COACHES POLL - The Bobcats took the top spot in the preseason poll with 43 points and five first-place votes, just ahead of the Spartans in second place with 42 points and two first-place votes.
