Greyhound Field Greyhounds Return Home for LSC Series Against Southwestern Bulldogs At Greyhound Field The Greyhounds dropped their first home series of the season to West Texas A&M, but posted a record at Greyhound Field in the previous two seasons. This year, Mitch Wolfe is leading the charge at home, batting.556, while Joe Huwer is right behind, with a.333 average. Inside the Series Eastern trails in their series against Southwestern Oklahoma State, but has won six of the last 11 meetings. Last year, the Greyhounds split a four-game series at Greyhound field, with ENMU winning the first game of both doubleheaders. Luis Quiñones paced Eastern with a.571 batting average with five runs scored, while Jereme Johnson hit.545. Kevin Thompson and current graduate assistant Ethan Wagner both batted.500 for the series. In the Lone Star Conference West Texas A&M currently leads the Lone Star Conference with a.414 batting average, followed by Cameron at.367. The Buffaloes Jess Cooper leads the league with a.574 batting average. Angelo State s pitching staff leads the conference with a 3.67 earned run average, while Texas A&M-Kingsville s staff has struck out a LSC-high 113 batters. Tarleton s Mike Ramirez has a 0.44 ERA over 20.1 innings and has fanned 22 batters. Head Coach Phil Clabaugh is entering his 20th year as the leader of the Eastern New Mexico University baseball program and has had the squad in contention for the Lone Star Conference championship tournament on the final day of the season for the last three seasons, taking the Hounds to their first-ever appearance in the tournament during the 2009 season. He has been with the Greyhounds since baseball was revived prior to the 1992 season. His teams have battled each season in the Lone Star Conference. In 2010, the Greyhounds continued their trend of last at bat wins, plating the game-winning run in their final at-bat, eight times. The Hounds picked up wins over nationally teams such as #11 Abilene Christian and #22 New Mexico Highlands and rallied from a 10-2 seventh-inning deficit to defeat LSC powerhouse, Angelo State. The 2009 campaign, arguably was his finest with the Hounds, guiding the program to 23 Lone Star Conference victories and the program s first-ever berth in the LSC Championship tournament. Included in the team s 28 overall wins were 12 victories in which the Hounds plated the game-winning run in their final at bat of the game. Jereme Johnson became the program s first All American, joining Seth Clabaugh on two different all-region teams. The duo was joined by Freddie Carmona as First Team All-Lone Star Conference selections. in 2008, the Hounds finished 26-26, and posted 19 wins in the LSC, narrowly missing the conference tournament. Eastern closed the season strong, winning five of their last six contests, including a four-game sweep at West Texas A&M. Midway through the season, ENMU posted picked up a series win over eventual LSC champion, Texas A&M-Kingsville, scoring victories in three of the four meetings. By the end of the season, Clabaugh s Greyhounds had virtually rewritten the offensive record books. In the 2007 season, Clabaugh guided the Greyhounds to the best start in team history, winning the first seven games of the season. Eastern scored a win over eventual LSC champion and NCAA championship participant, Angelo State and perennial NCAA powerhouse Abilene Christian. The Hounds offensive approach allowed them to rank second in the Lone Star Conference in walks as well as fourth in hitting and runs scored. Infielders Clayton Young and Mike McDuffie and pitcher Tyler Doughty were selected All-Lone Star Conference. Clabaugh s efforts at ENMU began in the summer of 1991, as the first head coach since the baseball program was discontinued in During his first year, he oversaw the construction of Greyhound Field, doing much of the work himself. The players also helped and gained a special appreciation for their first-year program and the new field. Greyhound Field gives Eastern a quality baseball facility. It features some of the largest outfield dimensions in the college game, with 362 feet to left field, 406 feet to center field, and 372 feet to right field. Clabaugh and the Greyhounds replaced the infield dirt several seasons ago and still maintain the facility. Clabaugh led his first ENMU team to a record in The Hounds won more games each of the next four seasons, improving to in 1995, then to in Eastern was in Clabaugh has compiled 461 victories during his time at Eastern. His teams have featured a powerful offense and have batted at least.318 during 11 of 12 seasons since 1995 and the school record of.344 was set by the Greyhounds in In 2010, the team posted an all-time best.964 fielding percentage. Eastern turned in a second place finish in the LSC in the 1994 season. The Hounds remained in the race for the 1997 title and the 2000 South Division crown until the final week of the season. Prior to joining the ENMU coaching staff, Clabaugh was head baseball coach and assistant football coach at Western New Mexico University for four years. In 1988, his first season, he led WNMU to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament title. He then guided Western to a better record each of the next three years. His success at building WNMU into a winning team helped him earn the job of reviving Eastern s baseball program. Now in his 19th year as a collegiate head coach, he has a career record of (.431). He ranks 42nd in career victories among active coaches in NCAA Division II. Clabaugh has coached several All-Region players at ENMU: Andy Gray, 1994; Shane Shallenberger, 1995; Steve Montoya, 1996; Mike Dunstan, 1997; and Bryan Silva, Six players have joined pro teams: Geoff Erwin (P, Clarksville Coyotes, 1996), John Arnold (C, Atlanta Braves, 1996), Chris Price (P/OF, Colorado Rockies, 1997), Gabe DeHoyos (P, Kansas City Royals, 2002), Dallas McMann (C, Amarillo Dillas, 2003), Ian Thurman-Kelly (P, N.Y. Mets, 2004). Clabaugh earned a bachelor s degree in english from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in He received a master s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from NW Oklahoma in Clabaugh and his wife, Helen, reside in Portales. Their adult children are Sarah and Seth. Sarah has graduated from college and Seth is a recent graduate of ENMU, who played in the outfield and pitched for the Hounds.
