All times Mountain *WAC Game SOFTBALL Utah State Aggies (10-37, 4-11 WAC) April April 24 Utah State vs. Idaho State 4 p.m. April 26 *Utah UT Arlington 4 p.m. April 27 *Utah UT Arlington 2 p.m. (DH) * = WAC Game QUICKLY - Utah State softball (10-37, 4-11 WAC) open this week s action with a bout against border foe Idaho State on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Following Wednesday s action, USU will pack its bags and head to the Lone Star State for a Western Athletic Conference series with UT Arlington. The Aggies skirmish with UTA is set to open with a single-game on Friday, with opening pitch being delivered at 4 p.m. The three-game weekend series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday, getting underway at 2 p.m. Utah State is coming off its second WAC series win of the season as it was able to take two-of-three games from the visiting Louisiana Tech squad. USU was led by a pair of seniors, pitcher Mandy Harmon who delivered two complete games to captures both wins from last weekends series, while senior infielder Christine Thomsen terrorized the Lady Techsters in all three games, producing eight hits in 11 plate appearances (.727) in the series. Thomsen s bat has been heating up the last several weeks, as the senior has surged her way to a.443 batting average, which is not only a team-best but is also the high-mark in the conference. With two remaining WAC series this season, the Aggies will be looking to continue to climb up the standings as they have pulled within two games of sixth-placed, UTSA. The top six teams in the conference standings at the end of the season qualify for the WAC Championship in Ruston, La., which begins on May 8. SERIES HISTORY - vs. Idaho State - This will be the fourth and final meeting between the two teams this season. USU leads the overall series 26-11, with the Aggies winning two of three meetings this year. Utah State won 3-2 in Boise and 12-4 in Pocatello, while ISU won 9-0 in five innings in Boise on March 17. Idaho State has been heating up recently as it enters Wednesday s showdown having won nine-of-10 games as well as claiming its last

UT Arlington will be moving to the Sun Belt Conference for the season. HEATING UP - Senior infielder Christine Thomsen has been hot at the plate in recent weeks, as the senior is currently riding a 14-game hitting streak which has elevated her batting average to a staggering.443. Thomsen s average is currently the highest in the WAC, with the next closest average coming from New Mexico State s Amber Olive, who is currently hitting.405 for the Crimson Aggies. She is also second in the conference in hits per game, averaging 1.34 per outing. LEGGING IT OUT - Sophomore outfielder Hailey Froton recorded her fifth triple of the season in Saturday s series finale against LA Tech, with a line drive down the right field line that scored two runners. The sophomore leads her team in triples and is currently tied with Amber Olive of New Mexico State for the most triples in the WAC. Juniors outfielder Rachael Hunsaker, infielder Becca Walker as well as sophomore outfielder Jolene Koons are the only other Utah State players to record a triple this season. THE.300 CLUB - The Aggies have two hitters with a.300 batting average or higher. Thomsen who continues to build on her already impressive.443 average as well as sophomore outfielder Hailey Froton, who s hot bat has earned her a.333 average for the season. In conference games, Froton is leading her squad with a.410 batting average against WAC opponents, while Thomsen is hot on her heels with a.388 average against conferences foes. Also cracking the.300 mark is sophomore outfielder Jolene Koons (.333). TO THE BRINK - Senior pitcher Mandy Harmon came within one out of recording her first-career no hitter against Seattle on Friday, April 12. The senior worked six-and-two-thirds innings without allowing a hit to a Redhawk batter before Allegra Wilde connected with a single to breakup Harmon s attempt at a no-no. AGGIES IN THE WAC - Utah State s pitching staff ranks towards the top of the WAC rankings for strikeouts per game. USU is currently averaging 5.74 strikeouts per game, which is the best mark in the conference. 2 U t a h S t a t e S o f t b a l l

Johnson falls behind San Jose State s Amanda Pridmore, who has tallied 214 strikeouts on the season. Froton is also tied for sixth in batting average in conference games, with a.410 batting average and a 1.14 hits per game average, which is the eighth-highest mark in conference. Sophomore outfielder Jolene Koons has nabbed three stolen bases in conference action, tying her for the sixth. She is averaging 0.25 steals per game. Both starting pitchers for Utah State rank in the top-10 in the WAC in several categories. Senior pitcher Mandy Harmon and Johnson are both in the top 10 for batters struckout and batter struckout looking. Harmon has struckout 49 batters looking this season, landing her with the second-most in the conference. Johnson lands just behind Harmon with 30 batter struckout looking, landing her in fifth. In WAC games, Harmon is limiting the opposing batters, as the senior has only allowed a.163 batting average to the opponents she has faced which is the lowest-average allowed to opposing hitters. Harmon has also recorded 114 strikeouts which is good for the fifth-best in the WAC. Two Utah State softball players garnered preseason honors from the WAC. The conference office announced the 2013 Preseason all-wac team, as selected by the leagues eight coaches, which included USU s senior infielder Christine Thomsen as well as sophomore outfielder Hailey Froton. AND THEN THERE WAS ONE - Utah State softball and the Tyteca family name has been synonymous with each other in the last six seasons. Shasta Tyteca played for USU from and posted a.300 batting average her senior season. Senior pitcher Shelbi Tyteca, younger sister to Shasta, played two seasons with her older sister, 2010 and Shelbi is the Aggies alltime saves leader, as she has recorded 10 career saves. SAVE-ABLE SHELBI - Senior pitcher Shelbi Tyteca recorded her first save of the season against Idaho State on March 16, in the SpringHill Suites Invitational. It is also Tyteca s 10th career save which is the most in program history. AGGIES MATCHING UP AGAINST THE BEST - The NFCA released its updated national standings on Tuesday, April 16, Utah State has faced five nationally ranked teams this season. USU was defeated by No. 3 Tennessee in the Red Desert Classic on Feb 8, 10-0 (5). In the Hillenbrand Invitational, the Aggies were defeated by No. 23 Arizona, 13-1 (5) on Feb. 17. 4 defeated, 9-0 (6), by this weeks No. 20 team, Nebraska. USU also faced two more ranked teams in the Texas Invitational. The Aggies lost a pair of games to No. 25 Tulsa, dropping the first game on Feb. 22, 8-0 (5), and losing the second match-up on Feb. 23, 3-0. Utah State also locked horns with No. 7 Texas in the Texas Invitational on Feb. 23, the Longhorns defeated USU, 13-2 (5). EXTRA-ORDINARY - Utah State has needed extra-innings in three games this season and is currently 2-1 in extra-inning affairs. In their first game with extra-innings against Boise State, the Aggies rallied to score three runs in the top of the sixth-inning to take a 3-2 lead headed into the final frame. BSU responded with a single run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, sending it into extras. Utah State came out on top, scoring two runs in the top of the eighth and holding Boise State s offense in check to take the game, 5-3. Trailing by five runs to Portland State in the bottom of the seventh inning, USU rallied to score five runs in the final frame to force extra-innings. The Aggies capitalized on the opportunity, scoring the games winning run in the bottom of the eighth frame. Utah State found itself in a scoreless showdown with New Mexico State. After seven scoreless innings action headed into extras, where NM State erupted for five runs in the top the seventh and went on to take the game, 5-2. NEW FACES IN THE WAC - The WAC added four teams for the 2013 softball season, Seattle University, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State. Utah State will square off against UTSA and Texas State for the first time in program history this season. USU dropped three games to SU on April 12-13, giving the Redhawks a 3-1 all-time series advantage. The Aggies likewise hold a 1-0 series advantage against UT Arlington, defeating the Mavericks in PRESEASON WAC COACHES POLL - The Bobcats took the top spot in the preseason poll with 43 points and five first-place votes, just ahead of the Spartans in second place with 42 points and two first-place votes. New Mexico State was third with 39 points and one first-place vote. UTSA came in fourth-place with 30 points, followed by Louisiana Tech in fifth with 22 points and USU in sixth with 20 points. USU has one college World Series appearance (1984, tied for 7th) and four NCAA Tournament appearances (1984, 1989, 1992, 1993). Utah State won the 1980 and 1981 AIAW National Championships.
