TBA All times local to site * = Western Athletic Conference game SLIGHT DETOUR: Seattle University continues its opening stretch of 13 consecutive road games this weekend with a three-game series against BYU. Instead of playing in Provo, the Redhawks agreed to meet the Cougars in St. George, Utah, as the games will take place at Bruce Hurst Field on the campus of Dixie State College. Seattle U is looking to continue its best start since the reestablishment of the baseball program in 2010, while BYU is looking for some wins after struggling through the first two weeks of the season. THE CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE SERIES: Seattle U came from behind to win the Friday and Sunday games against Cal State Northridge, bookending a Saturday doubleheader sweep by the Matadors. In Friday s game, With Seattle U down 2-1 heading into the seventh inning, Chase Fields drew a one-out walk, and Michael McCann followed with a home run to right field on an 0-2 pitch, the first of his collegiate career. In the top of the ninth inning, Cash McGuire drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Fields, and scored on a double to left field by Mc- Cann. Will Dennis came on in relief in the bottom of the ninth and set down the Matadors in order for his second save of the season. After Connor Moore pitched the first five innings, Grant Gunning replaced him and allowed just two hits in two scoreless innings to earn his first victory since March 30, Garrett Anderson pitched a perfect eighth inning before handing things over to Dennis in the ninth inning. The Redhawks lost game one of Saturday s doubleheader, 14-4, and fell behind in game two, 3-0, before scoring a run in the third inning and two runs in the fifth inning to tie the game. However, the Matatdors scored once in the seventh inning and held on for the 4-3 victory. The Redhawks earned more hits than the Matadors in the nightcap, 13-11, but left 13 runners on base and also hit into two double plays. Sunday, Mac Acker pitched brilliantly over eight innings, and the Redhawks scored four runs in the seventh to earn the split of the weekend series with a 4-2 victory. Acker was on the mound for eight innings, allowing just four hits, two walks, and one run while striking out six Matador batters. He got stronger as the game went along, retiring 15 of the final 16 CSU Northridge batters that he faced. A two-run triple by Ryan Somers proved to be the difference in the contest.

3 SCOUTING BYU: The Cougars come into the weekend with a 1-8 overall record after completing a swing through Texas with a 4-2 loss at Texas Tech Monday. The team s only victory came last Thursday at Texas A&M-Corpuc Christi, BYU also suffered an inning loss at Kansas during the first weekend of the season. As a team, the Cougars have compiled a.256 batting average, a.975 fielding percentage, and a 6.03 earned run average. Eric Urry leads BYU with a.500 batting average (12-of-24) along with three walks and two stolen bases. Kelton Caldwell has one of the team s two home runs, plus he has driven in a teamhigh seven runs. The Cougars have allowed 10 runs or more in a game four times this season, but have been held to two runs or less five times so far this year. SERIES HISTORY: Seattle U and BYU have met 14 times previously, with the Cougars holding a 10-4 advantage. In 1979, BYU defeated Seattle U, 9-4, at the Riverside Baseball Invitational. The Redhawks hosted the Cougars in 2010 and swept a two-game series, including an 8-7 victory in which Seattle U scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth for the comeback win. BYU returned the favor in 2011, sweeping a threegame series from Seattle U in Provo. The Redhawks returned to Provo in 2012 and split a doubleheader with the Cougars. BYU came to Washington later that season and won three of four games, including a 4-1 victory at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma. Last season, BYU swept a two-game midweek series from the Redhawks at Bannerwood Park, 5-2 and WEATHER FORECAST: After two weeks of perfect weather, Seattle U will potentially run into issues this weekend in St. George, Utah. The forecast calls for a few showers and windy conditions on Thursday with temperatures in the low 60s. The wind calms down a little bit Friday and Saturday, but the chance of rain increases both days, with temperatures in the high 50s. SEASON TICKETS: General admission season tickets for Seattle University baseball at Bannerwood Park are now available for just $50. Fans can also buy chairback seats as season tickets for $100. Single game tickets will cost $10 each for chairback seats, $7 apiece for adult bleacher seats, and $5 each for youth or senior citizens. All tickets for the Washington game on April 8 and the Washington State contest on May 19 will cost $10. Discount tickets are available for groups of 10 or more, and fans can also purchase weekend passes to four three-game series during the season. THE LEADER OF THE REDHAWKS: Donny Harrel is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Seattle University baseball program. He has led the team s continued improvement from 11 wins in 2010 to 21 wins in 2011 to 23 wins in Although the squad took a small step back in terms of victories, Harrel saw his first four-year class graduate last spring. At the University of Washington as an assistant coach for four seasons, Harrel was not only responsible for assisting in on-field coaching, but he also was responsible for the Huskies schedule and assisted with travel issues, budgeting, and helping student-athletes through the admissions process. He also oversaw the team s academic performance and was named Academic Coach of the Quarter in Winter 2007 when the team broke a 14-year record for highest cumulative grade point average. His head coaching experience comes from seven seasons at Lane Community College in Eugene, Ore., where he compiled a record and led the team to the NWAACC championship in Named NWAACC Southern Division Coach of the Year four times, he also led fundraising efforts to build a field, improve other facilities, buy equipment, and increase scholarship opportunities. COACHING: Harrel made some changes in the coaching staff after last season. Mike Nadeau was promoted into the top assistant s position, while Jeff James also moved up from director of baseball operations to assistant coach. Elliott Cribby is the new pitching coach for the Redhawks, and Cody Ryckman takes over as director of baseball operations. PRESEASON EXPECTATIONS: In the preseason coach s poll, Seattle U was picked to finish seventh in the WAC. Bakersfield received eight first place votes to land at the top of the poll with 80 points, followed by New Mexico State (70 points) and Sacramento State (68 points). Utah Valley finished fourth in the poll, followed by Grand Canyon, UT Pan American, the Redhawks, Northern Colorado, North Dakota, and Chicago State. 4 2014 PREVIEW FROM COACH DONNY HARREL Our staff is excited about competing in the Western Athletic Conference in We feel our experience from being in the conference in 2013 helped us better prepare for this season. Our program has come a long way since our beginning and we look to continually improve in 2014 and take that next step of playing in the WAC Tournament at the end of our regular season. Our last signing class in the program is very talented and we hope their abilities, along with the two consecutive years of bringing in top recruits, can create the perfect mix to take us toward the top of the WAC. Our guys have had a very productive fall and winter, and we look forward to getting these guys out on the field to see where we stack up. Our staff did a great job of preparing them now it is about winning baseball games! PITCHING Pitching depth is a key, especially starting pitching. Redshirt senior transfer Mac Acker comes to the club after sitting out last season and will push toward being a starter for us in our rotation. Freshman Austin Hansen established himself in the fall as a rotation-type pitcher and will begin as our Saturday starter. Redshirt senior Andrew Olson returns to the starting rotation as well as sophomore Connor Moore, who will throw on Opening Day. Junior Garrett Anderson and redshirt sophomore Grant Gunning, as well as sophomores Ted Hammond and Skyler Genger, have starting experience as well. Sophomore lefty Will Dennis moves into the role of closer for the Redhawks after a fantastic 2013 season. MOORE EARNS WAC WEEKLY HONOR: Sophomore lefthander Connor Moore was named Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 after his performance in the season opener Friday, Feb. 14, at UC Davis. Moore pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out six Aggie batters. It was an efficient start for Moore, as he threw just 79 pitches in the seven innings. This was the second weekly honor for a Seattle U player since joining the WAC last season, as Andrew Olson was named WAC Pitcher of the Week April 22, 2013, after throwing a complete game shutout the previous day against UT Arlington. MAKING HISTORY: Seattle U set new modern school records for runs in an single inning (11) and runs in a single game (17) Feb. 17 at UC Davis. OFFENSE Offensively we return our team rookie of the year in sophomore outfielder Landon Cray, as well senior starters in redshirt senior outfielder Ryan Somers and redshirt senior infielder Cullen Hendrickson. Junior starting catcher Brian Olson, sophomore second baseman Cash McGuire and senior centerfielder Chase Fields give strength up the middle with their experience. Grant Newton comes back as our most developed hitter and will play multiple roles. The key is going to be scoring runs and we felt we increased our ability to do that with more experienced returners and some key newcomers. Sophomore outfielder Austen Brand, junior college transfer outfielder Collin Peterson, and freshman outfielder Nelson Taylor will fight for time in the outfield and for quality at-bats. Utility players Avery Kain and Eric Koenig both have the ability to add to the offense with their bats regardless of where they play. FRESHMEN The core of our freshman class is highly talented and will give us production right away as the lineup starts to work itself out. Griffin Andreychuk comes in to help fill the needs at shortstop. We were able to keep all three of our draftees from last year s MLB Draft in Brock Carpenter, who will pitch and play infielder, catcher Sam Finfer, and infielder/catcher Michael Mc- Cann.
