6 A CLASSIC LINEUP: GCU S FIRST FOUR GCU s lineup has shaped up quite nicely as the season has wore on, leading to an 18-3 conference record thus far. With Austin Bull and Tom Lerouge setting the table with high averages and Ian Evans and Garrison Schwartz driving in the runs, the Lopes have averaged 7.9 runs on 11.3 hits in WAC play. GRAND CANYON LINEUP CARD ORDER BATTER AVG OBP RBIs 1 Austin Bull Tom Lerouge Ian Evans Garrison Schwartz AJ FRANKS HOME CAREER HAS STORYBOOK ENDING Franks With senior pitcher AJ Franks representing the lone senior on this year s squad, Wednesday s home finale was dedicated to him. It could not have been scripted better, as the Lopes scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth and handed the ball to Franks in a save situation. He retired the side to pick up his second save of the season. The junior college transfer quickly became a critical component of GCU s pitching staff. He has made 54 relief appearances to date, picking up six wins and four saves along the way. This season in WAC play, he has a spotless 0.00 earned run average, the only qualifying pitcher to feature a perfect ERA. Coach Stankiewicz: In just two years time, AJ became a mainstay in our bullpen, and his quiet confidence has shown great leadership in the clubhouse and on the field. He will be greatly missed by everyone in the program. At the end of April, AJ graduated from GCU with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. His final GPA at GCU was a 3.86, including a 4.0 in his final semester this spring. DA-DA-DA, DA-DA-DA Barnes Redshirt sophomore catcher Griffin Barnes made a catch in Game 2 against Seattle U that was seen around the world, including landing the No. 1 spot on SportsCenter s top 10. Barnes juggled a fouled off bunt two or three times before diving and recording the out. The clip of the play was shown everywhere from Bleacher Report to NBC s Today Show. GCU went on to win 19-0 in seven innings. NINETEEN RUNS AND A SHUTOUT After having its eight-game conference win streak snapped in the opener against Seattle U, the Lopes returned with fury on Saturday. It was GCU s biggest shutout win since topping Westmont 21-0 on Jan. 31, The Lopes scored the most runs since dropping 30 on Bradley on February Garrison Schwartz and Zach Malis each slugged home runs while Austin Bull and Tom Lerouge posted three-hit games. Preston Pavlica had five RBIs on the night, the most for any GCU batter in a game this season. On the other side of the ball, Jake Repavich quietly tossed his first career complete game shutout, limiting Seattle U to five hits while recording seven strikeouts. After a poor series opener against New Mexico State defensively, GCU did not commit an error in the remaining two games of the series. Coach Stankiewicz has specifically noted the elite defense of shortstop Marc Mumper: I thought our team defense was good all weekend, especially Marc Mumper at shortstop. 8 PAVLICA RETURNS FROM INJURY Pavlica Preston Pavlica has been back roaming the outfield for the past 12 games. Pavlica injured his right wrist in the opener of a three-game series at Saint Mary s on March 3. He collided with the outfield wall yet hung on to make a superb catch, with many who witnessed calling it the best they ve ever seen. The sophomore ended up missing 27 games with the injury. Pavlica wasted no time in his return to the lineup. In his first two at bats, he recorded a single and a double, respectively, in GCU s 4-3 win over the Cougars. The sophomore had a big outing on Saturday highlighted by a bases-clearing triple. He finished with five RBIs on the night, the most for a GCU batter this season. NEWS, NOTES, & NUMBERS 8 LEROUGE S KNACK FOR THE CLUTCH Lerouge Tom Lerouge rekindled memories of last season when he hit yet another walk-off in the series against UTRGV. It was the junior s second game-winning hit of the season and fifth in the last two years. Previously this year, Lerouge had the game-winning RBI single in the home-half of the eighth against CSU Bakersfield. I was just happy they were getting to me, Lerouge said after the Vaqueros walked Austin Bull in front of Lerouge on Saturday. I was thinking to myself, I m going to walk it off right here. When they walked Bull, I was excited. I knew I was going to see pitches, didn t try to rush, just stayed calm in the box and it happened. In an all-around impressive sophomore campaign, Lerouge exhibited his ability to come up with the clutch base hit when needed on multiple occasions throughout the year. In a span of two weeks, Lerouge managed three game-winning hits. First, Lerouge uncorked a walk-off double in a March 13 contest against Cal Poly to claim the rubber game. In Las Vegas on March 22, Lerouge broke a ninth-inning tie with a go-ahead single down the left field line as GCU went on to defeat UNLV. Back home two days later, Lerouge opened conference play by delivering a walk-off single in the 11th inning as the Lopes downed Utah Valley. Rehabbing from an offseason injury, Lerouge had been limited to roles as DH and pinch hitter early but returned to the outfield March MUMPER S BAT COMES TO LIFE Mumper Sophomore Marc Mumper has been in the lineup primarily for his defensive ability at shortstop. But the Highlands Ranch, Colo. native has had his bat round into form over the last month. For the month of April, Mumper ended batting.293 and slugging.585 in conference games. The slugging numbers ranked third on the team and came from home runs against Northern Colorado and New Mexico State. Something about facing the Northern Colorado Bears, a team from Mumper s home state of Colorado, really excites the sophomore shortstop. He s hit three career home runs, two of which have come against Northern Colorado and they ve both been three-run shots -- one in 2016 and one to begin this month. SCHWARTZ TABBED WAC PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR Schwartz Malis It s becoming a tradition at, and its one that the Lopes wouldn t be opposed to seeing continue. For the second straight season, the WAC pick for Preseason Player of the Year wears a Grand Canyon uniform, this year coming in the form of junior outfielder Garrison Schwartz. Schwartz follows in Paul Panaccione s footsteps, Panaccione being the 2016 Player of the Year before being selected by the Washington Nationals in the 10th Round of last year s draft. Joining Schwartz as a part of the All-WAC preseason recognition was sophomore infielder Zach Malis, who was named to the conference s first team as an at-large selection. was picked to finish fourth by the conference s coaches, narrowly behind third-place Sacramento State. THE MAJOR LEAGUE EXPERIENCE GCU had the remarkable experience of going toe-to-toe with the hometown big league club, the Arizona Diamondbacks, on Feb. 22. While the Lopes fell 9-1, it was less about the result and more about the experience for the student-athletes. Freshman Tyler Hansen made his (albeit unofficial) collegiate pitching debut facing A.J. Pollock, Brandon Drury, Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb. He didn t do too bad either. Hansen went 2.0 innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs and one walk. He s from Snowflake, Arizona. He hadn t ever seen this before, head coach Andy Stankiewicz said with a chuckle. He was great. We said, don t be fearful. I m sure emotions were running a little high for him, but he did a great job. THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN is tied for the conference lead with three returning All-WAC selections from a year ago. When I was offered a contract extension, I was excited about it is when we re postseason eligible, and in 2018 we re going to make some noise. Jerry Colangelo, a Valley Sports icon and special advisor to GCU Athletics, further explained the move. I spent 45 years in professional sports, and I had a habit of tearing up contracts. 17 BASEBALL // NEW STADIUM FEBRUARY 2018 WHAT THEY RE SAYING Mike This looks incredible! Mid-major program w/ Omaha potential.. Postseason eligible in 18. #LookOut Aaron Big-time facility coming I agree expect big things ahead for the #Lopes. Kendall Outstanding commitment The facilities arms race rages on. As a part of its $1 billion campus expansion, University announced on Aug. 16, 2016 that it will complete construction of 10 new athletic facilities within the next two years as it wraps up its transition to full-status NCAA Division I athletics. s new state-of-the-art baseball stadium, slated for completion in February 2018, will feature covered chairback seats wrapping around the infield and behind home plate as well as grass-berm seating down the first-base side. The stadium will feature bowl seating, an expansive press box with multiple broadcast booths and concession space. There will be a team clubhouse, umpire room as well as photo and video wells. The ballpark will dramatically increase the capacity of the home for GCU Baseball from under 1,500 to over 2,500. Attendance has continued to rise at home games with finishing second in the 10-team WAC in average attendance last year. The 2016 season saw six of the 10 largest crowds in GCU Baseball history, including a record 1,987 fans for the Lopes game Tennessee -- well past the current venue s official capacity of 1,500 fans. GCU Ballpark will also feature a new high-definition video display in right field.
