Golden Eagles off to best start in 12 years Marquette's 6-1 start to the 2009 campaign registers as the squad's best start to a season since the 1997 team started the year 10-1, winning 10 straight after dropping the season opener to Bowling Green. Ciara Jones Leads Golden Eagles to Marquette Invitational Crown Sophomore outside hitter Ciara Jones earned Marquette Invitational Most Valuable Player honors for her role in helping MU to a perfect 4-0 weekend. Jones recorded a career-high 15 kills againsttexas State in the tournament opener and bested that with 16 against Austin Peay in the championship match. Jones explosive athleticism was on full display, not surprising considering her athletic lineage which includes her father, Aaron, a nine-year NFL veteran, and brothers, Aaron III and Michael, both NCAA Division I football players. Michael is currently a freshman linebacker at the University of Michigan. Jones named to BIG EAST Honor Roll In addition to earning Marquette Invitational MVP honors, Jones was named to the BIG EAST Conference Honor Roll (Sept. 7) the conference announced Monday. It is the first such honor of her career. Marquette Invitational All-Tournament While Jones earned MVP honors, two of her teammates, Nikki Klingsporn and Rabbecka Gonyo, were also named to the all-tournament team. Klingsporn set a career high with 50 assists against Texas State and registered another personal best with 58 in only four sets against Butler. Gonyo notched 21 total blocks over the weekend, including a personal-best nine against Texas State. It is Klingsporn s second all-tournament honor in as many weeks. 2 Klingsporn and Bielski Impress For their stellar play at the Loyola Invitational, junior roommates Nikki Klingsporn and Leslie Bielski were each named to the Loyola Invitaional All-Tournament. Each recorded double-doubles against Iowa and Loyola, helping MU to a 2-1 weekend. Newcomers Deliver In Opening Weekend In addition to Klingsporn, other newcomers made their presence felt at the Loyola Invitational. Ashley Beyer, a junior college transfer, recorded 24 kills (.417 attack percentage) and 13 digs in the tournament finale against Loyola. Freshman middles Carol Henney and Danielle Carlson also played up to their advance billing over the weekend, with 16 kills and 18 kills, respectively. In the back row, Kelsey Warner started the Iowa match at defensive specialist and the match against Loyola at libero. Head Coach Bond Shymansky Earns First Win at MU After eight months on the job, new head coach Bond Shymansky finally was able to lead the Marquette volleyball team in a regular season match, defeating Eastern Kentucky Aug. 28 at the Loyola Invitational, 3-0. Shymansky also led MU to a win over Loyola but fell to his alma mater, Iowa. Eight Newcomers Fill Out Roster Joining the six returning players this season are eight newcomers. Junior setter Nikki Klingsporn joined the program from the University of Wisconsin for the 2009 spring semester and was handed the starting setter duties. Outside hitter Ashley Beyer comes to Marquette as a sophomore after earning AVCA Two-Year Colleges First All- America honors, leading Kishwaukee (Ill.) College to its third consecutive NJCAA Division II national title, while also leading the nation in kills (784). Recruiting Class Earns Highest Honorable Mention Honors PrepVolleyball.com gave Marquette s 2009 recruiting haul highest honorable mention honors, raking it among the top 45 classes in the country and second in the BIG EAST. Helping that ranking was Under Armour/AVCA Second All-America Carol Henney from nearby Burlington, Wis. The organization s ranking included only incoming freshmen and did not include late signee Kelsey Warner. It was Marquette s highest ranking ever. Golden Eagles Picked Sixth In BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches Poll Marquette was picked to finish sixth in the BIG EAST Conference, a survey of all 15 of the league s head coaches revealed. The Golden Eagles garnered 119 points to finish behind perennial BIG EAST power St. John s. Louisville once again was picked to win the league, grabbing six first place votes and 186 total points, eight ahead of second place Notre Dame. Under his guidance, the Yellow Jackets made three NCAA Tournament appearances and garnered multiple team and individual accolades. In his first few months at Marquette, Shymansky compiled the second-highest rated recruiting class in the BIG EAST, earning highest honorable mention from PrepVolleyball.com to rank it among the top 45 hauls nationwide. The ranking included only incoming freshmen and did not accout for Ashley Beyer, Nikki Klingsporn and Kelsey Warner. It was MU s highest ranking ever. Georgia Tech posted an overall record of (.729) during his tenure, including a mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He concluded the 2008 campaign with the highest career winning percentage among active ACC coaches, a mark that ranked among the top-20 in the nation. In seven seasons, Shymansky led Georgia Tech to the NCAA Sweet 16 (2003), the NCAA Elite 8 (2004), ACC Tournament Championship (2002) and ACC Regular Season Championship (2003 and 2004). He was named the league's coach of the year in 2004 after guiding the program to a 27-7 overall record and a perfect 16-0 conference campaign. He was also the AVCA East Region Coach of the Year that season as well. Individually, nine student-athletes have claimed All-America honors under his tutelage and 10 different players have earned a total of 21 All-ACC selections. A pair of Yellow Jackets were tabbed the ACC Player of the Year during his tenure and four players earned spots on the ACC All-Freshman. Shymansky also helped collect several nationally ranked recruiting classes at Georgia Tech. Four of his seven classes have been ranked among the nation's top-25, led by the 2005 group, which was rated No. 4 by Volleyball Magazine and eighth by PrepVolleyball.com. While at Georgia Tech, he played a key role in signing multiple newcomers selected to the "Fab 50" by Volleyball Magazine. The Yellow Jackets posted an overall record of in 2008, including a 12-8 slate in ACC play. Two players were tabbed to both the all-conference and all-region squads. Shymansky, who initially joined the Georgia Tech coaching staff as an assistant coach under Shelton Collier in February, 2000, served as the team's defensive and blocking coordinator in his first two seasons. A native of Iowa City, Iowa, Shymansky began his volleyball career at the University of Iowa, where he was a member of the men's volleyball club as a setter and outside hitter from He earned his degree in communications in 1995 from Iowa before completing his master's degree in secondary English education in Shymansky, 37, is married to the former Catherine Cruikshank of Iowa City, Iowa.
