A short-handed Loyola squad dropped both matches last weekend at the season-opening Active Ankle Ball State Classic, falling to the host Cardinals as well as IPFW. HEAD COACH CHRIS MUSCAT California native Chris Muscat is in his first season at the helm of the Loyola women s volleyball program, succeeding Marcie Wolbeck to become the ninth head coach in program history. Muscat arrived in Rogers Park after a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Missouri, where he helped the Tigers advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last year. He began his collegiate coaching career in 2007 at Stanford, under the guidance of legendary coach John Dunning, after a stellar playing career at UCLA (Class of 2001), where he was part of two national championship teams (1998, 2000). BATTLING THE BIG TEN Loyola enters Friday night s match against Northwestern looking to improve on its mark against Big Ten Conference teams, as the Ramblers are (.182) all-time against the BCS league. The Ramblers have dropped nine of their last 10 matches against Big Ten schools since the start of the 2005 season, with its lone win being a 3-1 win over the Wildcats on Aug. 29, 2008 at the Gentile Center. YOUTH MOVEMENT Loyola s opening week lineup certainly had a different look to it as four freshmen were part of the Ramblers starting six. New faces occupied two outside hitter spots (Laura Purcell, Mary Kate Styler), one in the middle (Kathleen Omelina) and the all-important setter position (Vicki Wrobel). DAZZLING DEBUT Freshman hitter Laura Purcell got her Loyola career off to a terrific start, leading the Ramblers in kills and digs in both matches en route to earning all-tournament honors last weekend at Ball State. A product of national volleyball powerhouse Assumption High School in Louisville, Ky., Purcell finished with eight kills and nine digs in the season opener against Ball State before notching a double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs in the tournament finale against IPFW. Purcell sits sixth in the Horizon League in kills (3.17 kps) and ninth in digs (3.50 dps) heading into this weekend s action. WROBEL RUNS THE SHOW Fellow freshman Vicki Wrobel also performed admirably during the opening weekend as she was thrust into the starting setter role. Wrobel dished out 52 assists (8.67 aps) in Loyola s first two matches and also gave LU a presence at the service line, where she fired up six aces, including five against IPFW. In fact, Wrobel leads the Horizon League in aces (6, 1.00 aps) heading into play this weekend. PRESEASON PREDICTIONS Loyola was picked seventh in the Horizon League preseason poll of coaches released earlier this week. Milwaukee, which has won the regular season title seven of the last eight seasons, was the coaches choice to win the League. Complete poll results are listed below: 1. Built in 1923, the venerable old Alumni Gym housed the Rambler volleyball program since its inception, with its low ceiling and cozy bleachers creating a daunting homecourt advantage that helped LU post a (.711) record from Loyola will play in Halas this season before moving into Gentile Arena in GRADUATION LEADS TO OPPORTUNITY While the loss of four-year starter Mallory Curran and three-year starter Colleen Francis leave a void in the lineup, there is ample opportunity for LU s current players to step up and contribute. To put their on-court numbers into perspective, Loyola s returning players had accounted for a combined 880 kills heading into the 2011 season, 125 less than Curran s career total (1,005) and equal to Francis output. Junior Diana Schulte is Loyola s current active leader with 327 career kills. EVERYONE BACK IN THE BACK ROW One area where Loyola will operate with a wealth of experience is in the back row, as the Ramblers libero (Cat Languido) and two primary back-row substitutes (Kristen Haggenjos and Cariann Soukal) all return. Languido finished sixth in the Horizon League in digs last season (423, 4.45 dps) in her first season at libero while Haggenjos played some of her best volleyball of the season last year down the stretch. HOPING THIS DIANA WILL BE ROYALTY Junior Diana Schulte is primed for a breakout season after showing flashes of her great potential last season. After playing primarily in the middle as a freshman, Schulte made a seamless transition to outside hitter last season, developing into a potent weapon for the Ramblers. While consistency will be biggest thing for her this season, her talent is undeniable and she turned in two of the best matches by a Horizon League outside hitter during the opening week of conference play last season, burying a career-high 23 kills at a.465 efficiency against Wright State before following that up with 21 kills and a.422 hitting percentage the next day against Butler. Schulte missed the trip to Muncie and is questionable to return this weekend. POUNOVICH BACK IN THE MIDDLE OF THINGS Loyola received a big boost last weekend as Natalie Pounovich returned to the court. Coming off a breakout season in 2009, Pounovich was off to a solid start last season before an injury ended her season after just five matches. She shook off the rust and slammed 13 kills in Loyola s two matches last weekend and ranks fourth in the Horizon League with a.346 ( ) hitting percentage. In addition to her efficient offense, Pounovich also gives the Ramblers a proven presence at the net on defense, as evidenced by her team-best five blocks (0.83 bps) over the opening weekend. FAMILY AFFAIR Mary Kate Styler is another Loyola rookie who was able to get her feet wet last weekend and the Oak Lawn native made the most of the chance, drilling 15 kills (2.50 kps) in the Ramblers two matches. Styler opened the season by racking up seven kills at a.316 clip (7-2-16) against Ball State before posting eight kills on Saturday against IPFW. Despite her freshman status, Styler is well-versed in Loyola volleyball as her brother, Brendan, is a senior on Loyola s men s volleyball squad.
