3 Foreword Welcome to the qualification of the Women s EHF Champions League 2013/14 Dear media representative, Welcome to a new season of the Women s EHF Champions League. With the qualification tournaments for this season s group matches just around the corner, let s take a look back at last season s final. In a thrilling final Győri Audi ETO KC beat Larvik HK over two hotly contested matches. These encounters once more highlighted the terrific level women s handball has reached. In recent years the Women s EHF Champions League has made significant steps forward. In 2012 the European Handball Federation established the Women s Handball Board and employed former top class player Alenka Cuderman as the women s handball coordinator. New projects have already been launched and the EHF will not stop working on the continuous further development of women s handball. In the qualification 16 teams are now vying for a spot in the EHF Champions League and with household names such as HC Leipzig, FTC Rail Cargo Hungária and Viborg HK among them, I am confident that the competition will be off to a great start and an even greater finish can be expected when the final is played in May We pride ourselves on our positive and cooperative relationship with the press and media and I am sure this will continue and develop in the future. Should you require any information, help or assistance during the course of the season, your first point of contact is the EHF Media and Communications Department based in our office in Vienna. They will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you might have. We look forward to working with you in the coming season! Jean Brihault EHF President 3

Trondheim in Norway is the venue for the first of four qualification groups and the only one to be played on the weekend of 7 and 8 September. Two Norwegian teams, Byåsen Trondheim and Tertnes Bergen, as well as HC Leipzig from Germany and Belarusian champions BNTU-BelAZ Minsk Region are the four contenders for place in the group matches. Byåsen have the home advantage in the group and their star player, Norwegian international Camilla Herrem, is confident going into the tournament. We simply should be able to defeat Tertnes, whom we know very well. In the final I expect us to meet Leipzig, a team we have lost to the last two times we have met them. We have a better chance this time, as Leipzig are weakened by their absence of goalkeeper Katja Schülke, explained Herrem. 8 Qualification Group 1 Qualification Teams Byåsen Trondheim (Norway) 1990 was the last time that the club from Norway s third largest city Trondheim had the pleasure of lifting the national championship trophy. For many years have they been second best after Larvik HK, who take the title year after year. Larvik cruised to the league title again this season ahead of them and Byåsen s new head coach, Dane Claus Mogensen, does not expect this pattern to change in the near future. The team is somewhat more optimistic when it comes to the chances in the qualification tournament, where Byåsen are hosting Group 1 and see themselves as one of the favourites to progress to the group matches. Tertnes Bergen (Norway) After finishing third in the league, Tertnes were unfortunate enough to run into Larvik in the semi-finals of the Norwegian play-offs which resulted in two big defeats against the champions. However, head coach Tore Johannesen and his team found a lot of consolation in taking the bronze medal thanks to a 32:24 victory against Stabæk. This third place proved to be even more valuable than expected, as it resulted in a wild card place for Tertnes in the qualification tournament. There was more luck for the side as they were spared a long away journey and will only have to travel to Trondheim to meet their national league rivals in the semi-final. 10 Qualification Group 1 Qualification Teams HC Leipzig (Germany) HC Leipzig are known as the dominant force in German handball, holding the German record for the most women s championships won. However, recent years have proven to be a drought when it comes to titles for the team. In 2011 as well as in 2012 and this year, Leipzig s perennial rivals Thüringer HC won the German championship. In the two-legged finals, the Leipzig women could not do much against Thüringer HC who took two clear wins and the championship as well as the direct qualification for the group matches, leaving Leipzig to battle for their place in the qualifiers. BNTU-BelAZ Minsk Region (Belarus) Belarus earned a place in the European top flight at the expense of the Slovakian champions and BNTU BelAZ Minsk can carry on from where they left off at their attempt in qualification six years ago. BNTU won their fifth double in a row adding the cup trophy to the national championship title last season. In 20 league rounds they suffered only three defeats, but they clinched the title only in the very last round, beating their fierce rivals Gorodnichanka Grodno 18:15. Like in the 2007/08 season they are in a group with Byåsen, but their first challenge is against the German record champions from Leipzig. The Hungarian side has the advantage of hosting this tournament, but even abroad they would have been the favourites. Just about half a year ago FTC were close to reaching the semi-finals of the 2012/13 Women s EHF Champions League, but missed out by just two points in the main round. Head-to-head stats in European Cup competitions No previous encounters. They will now face Lokomotiva Zagreb, a squad that features many players from the Croatian national team. An all-hungarian match to decide which team advances is a strong possiblilty, as Érd (third ranked in the Hungarian national league) will try everything to stop Zug, the Swiss Champions and both teams have never been part of the group matches. The winner of this tournament will progress to Group B in which they will face FC Midtjylland, MKS Lublin and 2012 winners Budućnost. 12

13 Qualification Group 2 Qualification Teams Érd (Hungary) Handball in Érd has a tradition of 35 years, however the club has really started to produce success in recent years. Since their debut in the Hungarian top league in 2010, Érd s appetite is growing from year to year and last season they were awarded with bronze medals, as they beat Vác in the race for third. The club from the outskirts of Budapest also made their debut in the European Cups last season and were eliminated in Round 3 of the EHF Cup by the eventual runners-up from Metz only on the away goals rule. Érd were awarded with a place in the qualification as a result of Győr winning the trophy back in May. LK Zug (Switzerland) The record champions LC Brühl were denied in their attempt to lift the national league title for the 30th time as they were swept in the bestof-three final by Zug, who accomplished the victory despite having three national team players injured. Zug also won the regular season and the winners stage, losing just two matches against Spono Nottwil and Yellow Winterthur and drawing once against Brühl throughout the entire season. LK clinched only their second trophy, with the first in 2010, and are certainly favourites to defend the title in the new season. Ercsi út 34. 15 Qualification Group 2 Qualification Teams FTC Rail Cargo Hungária (Hungary) It has been seven years since Ferencváros last lifted the Hungarian Championship trophy. Since then they have been struggling to keep up with the powerful Győr. In the previous season they had some success against their fierce domestic rivals, as they were the only team besides Oltchim Vâlcea to get a result against Győr, drawing with them during the regular season. However, in both the league and cup final the weakened FTC stood no chance against them, especially with top scorer in the Women s EHF Champions League Zsuzsanna Tomori out due to injury. HC Lokomotiva Zagreb (Croatia) Lokomotiva were the most successful team in the Yugoslav Championship s early years, winning ten championships between 1955 and Last season no team, including Lokomotiva, could prevent RK Podravka defending their trophy in the Croatian championship. The Zagreb-based club finished eight points behind Podravka in the winners stage of the league, but were later awarded with a wild card place for the European top flight. Lokomotiva had some revenge in the final tournament of the regional WRHL, where they beat Podravka in the third place match. Together with Baia Mare they have reached the second qualification stage for the first time. Viborg are the only team among the 16 vying for qualification to have reached the very top of European club handball before, lifting the EHF Champions League s trophy in 2006, 2009 and However, today s team is a lot different compared to the golden generation. Head-to-head stats in European Cup competitions No previous encounters. Ranked third at the conclusion of the Danish league, they needed a wild card to take part in the qualification. Viborg have the daunting challenge ahead of facing the hosts in Romania. Holstebro, the EHF Cup champions and Danish league runners-up, are likely to have the odds in their favour in the match against Dalfsen. The winner of this tournament will progress to Group A, where they will face defending champions Győr, reigning Cup Winners Cup holders Hypo Niederösterreich and Thüringer HC. 17

18 Qualification Group 3 Qualification Teams HCM Baia Mare (Romania) Until last season, their best achievement in the Romanian league was the fourth place. They reached a new milestone in 2012/13 taking second position in the league and adding a surprising triumph in the Romanian Cup after Oltchim Râmnicu Vâlcea had been eliminated in the semi-finals. Baia Mare have no modest ambitions as they vow to continue Oltchim s legacy among Europe s elite in the upcoming season. In order to compete at the highest level, Baia Mare have strengthened their squad during this summer. The Romanian side managed to persuade both Adriana Nechita and Paula Ungureanu, former Oltchim players, to join the side. Viborg HK (Denmark) Being Danish record champions has not helped Viborg HK a lot in recent years. The competition in one of Europe s strongest leagues has become even better, the teams in the league are more equal and Viborg have not won the championship since Last season the team from one of Denmark s most historic towns was only one goal away from not even reaching the semi-finals of the playoffs. Then, in the semi-finals, they were not able to conquer one of their absolute rivals in the top of Danish women s handball for many years, FC Midtjylland. 20 Qualification Group 3 Qualification Teams Team Tvis Holstebro (Denmark) The 2012/13 season was the best season so far for Team Tvis Holstebro since they gained promotion into the strong and competitive Danish league in Not only did Niels Agesen, who has been head coach during the team s entire league adventure, lead his girls to celebrate a great triumph at international level, winning the EHF Cup, but also on the domestic front. The western Denmark club achieved their best result so far, as they reached the final of the championship play-offs for the first time. In the finals, however, FC Midtjylland were too much to handle, and Holstebro had to settle for second and a place in qualification. Sercodak Dalfsen (Netherlands) In the Netherlands, the championship finals are played best out of three, but a third match was never even considered, as SERCODAK Dalfsen won the women s championship for the third year in succession with two clear wins against Succes Schoonmaak/VOC Amsterdam. Dalfsen won the first match at home 32:20 and in the return match in Amsterdam, the title holders finished the job in style. Between the two final matches, Dalfsen even had time and energy to win the cup final against Hellas, securing them the double. The Dutch champions are the only team who had to make their way through Qualification 1, defeating Turkish side Muratpasa in the process. During the summer break Vardar Skopje boosted their squad by signing several top class players from France, Russia and FYR Macedonia, arguably making the team the red-hot favourite to win this qualification tournament and they have a fair chance to go all the way through to the main round at the very least. Vardar play their semi-final against the tournament s hosts, Italian champions Jomi Salerno, who are the clear underdogs in this duel. Head-to-head stats in European Cup competitions No previous encounters. In the second semi-final the national championship runners-ups from Russia and France face each other. Rostov-Don are in a slightly better position compared to Fleury Loiret Handball courtesy of their bigger international experience however, it must be noted, that the Russian side failed to progress past qualification in 2011 and The winner of this tournament progresses to Group D in which they will face Larvik, Balonmano Bera Bera and HC Podravka Vegeta. 22

23 Qualification Group 4 Qualification Teams Rostov-Don (Russia) They had their first title in 19 years within their grasp, yet they let it slip out of their hands and allowed Dinamo Volgograd to extend their rule over the Russian Superleague to five years. It took all three matches in the best-of-three final in Rostov to decide the title. However, as Dinamo did not confirm participations in the Women s EHF Champions League, the sole Russian representative will be the runners-up Rostov, who finished second after 16 rounds of the regular season and powered through Luch Moscow and Lada Togliatti to the final. Rostov also managed to add a trophy to their season with a triumph in the Russian Cup. Fleury Loiret Handball (France) After the regular season of the French league, Fleury sat in second place of the table, six points behind Metz. Both Metz and Fleury proceeded directly to the semi-finals, where there was danger ahead. Fleury won by six in the second semi-final leg after drawing the first against Mios-Biganos. There seemed to be a shock on the cards in the final after a 27:22 first leg victory for Fleury. However, Metz showed their true class, just as they had done throughout the season, to take a 27:21 second leg win and the league title, giving them a place in the group matches, while Fleury were awarded a wild card place in qualification. 25 Qualification Group 4 Qualification Teams WHC Vardar SCBT (FYR Macedonia) The previous season of the Macedonian Superleague was more like a prelude of what handball fans in this country and in Europe can expect in the coming years. ŽRK Vardar SCBT won their first national title. After winning the regular season they easily sailed through the semi-final and defeated defending champions Metalurg 2:0 in the final. They become only the third team to claim the championship title after Kometal gathered 17 and Metalurg three trophies. After a huge bolstering of their squad over this summer they should be also the hot contenders for a title in Europe. Jomi Salerno (Italy) Jomi Salerno became Italian champions for the third time in four seasons after a closely contested season with HC Sassari. The teams were level on points after the first phase, before Salerno took first place at the end of the second phase with one more victory. The sides met once again in the play-off finals. In a best-of-three series, Salerno took the first game with a comfortable eight-goal victory, but Sassari struck back in the second game. The decider was an extremely tight game, with Jomi coming from behind to win 26:25 and book their place in qualification. 27 Important regulations Extra-time and penalty throws If a semifinal match or the final (place 1/2) ends in a draw, there will be a five minutes break followed by one extra time of 2 x 5 minutes, there will be a one minute half-time break at the half time for the changeover of teams. If the placement match (place 3/4) ends in a draw, there shall be no extra time, the match will be decided directly by penalty throws. In the semifinals and/or final (place 1/2), if there is no winner after the extra time, the match will be decided by penalty throws. Rules for execution of penalty throws Prior to penalty throwing, each team shall name five players eligible to play at the end of the match by handing the referees a list of numbers. These players shall then take one throw each, alternating with their opponents. Each team is free to determine the sequence in which throwers will take their throws. The goalkeepers may be freely selected from the match report and exchanged in accordance with the Rules of the game. Goalkeepers may take throws and throwers may play as goalkeepers. The referees shall choose the goal at which throws are taken. The team taking the first penalty throw shall be determined by the referees by drawing lots. The team winning the draw may choose whether it wishes to throw first or last. If scores are equal after the first round of penalty throwing, it shall be continued until a decision is reached. In the second round, the other team shall start. Again five players shall be named who are eligible to play (the players named before may be named once again). In the second round, a decision is reached when a goal difference arises after both teams have taken one throw each. Eligible players are players entered in the match report who have not been disqualified or suspended at the time of the final whistle. 27
