4 Foreword Dear media representatives, Welcome to a new season in the Women s EHF Champions League. Four months after Buducnost claimed their second European crown, we are ready to write a completely new chapter as we enter the 23rd season of the competition. Eight matches and two qualification tournaments will determine which two teams will earn the remaining berths in the 2015/16 Group Matches. The tournaments will take place in two of the biggest countries in women s handball and I am sure we can look forward to large crowds in both Baia Mare, Romania and Drammen, Norway. What makes this year s qualification even more exciting is the fact that we have two participants with the potential to make it all the way to the Women s EHF FINAL4 in Budapest on 7/8 May HCM Baia Mare and Györi Audi ETO KC both reached the newly introduced quarter-final stage last season, but found themselves fighting for their spots in the Group Matches phase courtesy of surprising stumbles in their respective domestic leagues. EHF Champions League newcomers CSM Bucuresti took the Romanian title at the expense of Baia Mare and the double winner Györ suffered a shock final defeat to their arch rivals FTC-Rail Cargo Hungaria in the Hungarian league final. Their mission is clear, but not at all easy as they both face formidable adversaries. Györ will have expectations to live up to in Group 1, where the Norwegian runners-up Glassverket are amongst their fiercest opponents. Baia Mare and the star-studded Esbjerg team, which boasts Dutch, Danish, Swedish and Norwegian international players, will both be eyeing the same prize in Group 2. To reach the final showdown in each of the two groups, the favourites have to overcome their semi-final hurdles and the history of our sport offers numerous examples of teams underestimating their opponents and coming undone. Ankara Yenimahalle BSK are the Turkish newcomers in qualification but all the other sides competing WHC Radnicki Kragujevac, BNTU-BelAZ Minsk Reg. and SERCODAK Dalfsen - have all gathered enough experience in previous seasons to spring a surprise. In the Group Matches FC Midtjylland, HC Vardar and Hypo Niederösterreich await the winner of Group 1 from Drammen, whilst the winner of Group 2 in Baia Mare will join last season s runners-up Larvik, RK Krim Mercator and the emerging Russian powerhouse of Rostov-Don. There are eight exciting matches ahead in this qualification phase and I wish to all teams the very best of luck. We pride ourselves on our positive and cooperative relationship with the press and media and I am sure this will continue and develop in the future. Should you require any information, help or assistance during the course of the season, your first point of contact is the EHF Media and Communications Department based in our office in Vienna. They will be more than happy to assist you with any questions you might have. We look forward to working with you in the upcoming season! Jean Brihault EHF President 4

The EHF Champions League winners from 2013 and 2014, Györi Audi ETO KC are seen by most people as the clear favourites, but hosts Glassverket do at least have the home advantage. The winner of the group in Drammen will join Group C of the group matches, where HC Vardar, FC Midtjylland and Hypo Niederösterreich will be awaiting them. GROUP 1 Györi Audi ETO KC (HUN) vs WHC Radnicki Kragujevac (SRB) Having to go through the qualification tournament in order to reach the group stage will be a new experience for Györ who won the tournament in 2013 and again in However, losing the Hungarian championship to their rivals FTC has put Györ in that situation. At least three players in the Györ team are likely to feel at home - the three Norwegian internationals in the Hungarian roster line player Heidi Loke, right back Linn Jorum Sulland and goalkeeper Kari Aalvik Grimsbo. For Györ s opponents from Kragujevac, playing in the qualifiers is no new experience. The Serbian club was in the same situation last year, without making it to the group matches. There is no doubt, that again this year, the Kragujevac team, which consist entirely of Serbian players, except for Bosnian centre back Dejana Kulic will have their hands full against the ambitious Györ team under head coach Ambros Martin. Still, the Györ coach is cautious: The coming weekend will be our FINAL4! We are going to play two important matches in two days, and those matches will determine our season. Therefore we will have to be on form, says Ambros Martin who regrets the absence of injured Gabriella Toth, but who seeks comfort in the return of Anita Görbicz from maternity leave. Glassverket (NOR) vs SERCODAK Dalfsen (NED) While this match will be Glassverket s first European game ever, Dalfsen are well used to European handball, and with the Champions League qualifiers in particular. This is the Dutch champions third attempt at trying to reach the promised land of the group matches, but so far without success. If you ask their coach Peter Portengen, the young Dutch team is not likely to make the cut this year either. We definitely lack the international experience, but of course we hope for a surprise, says Portengen who appears pretty relaxed about his team s position as underdogs. Even if we miss out on qualification, we will play in the (EHF) Cup Winners Cup - and for our young team this is the perfect way to gain experience and learn for the future, he says. 10

11 GROUP 1 Győri Audi ETO KC (HUN) Few had expected at the beginning of the previous season that Győr would have to hand over the Hungarian women s crown to their domestic rivals Ferencváros. Numerous absences took its toll and Ferencváros beat Győr in the last round of the regular season, but the defending champions still held on to home court advantage for the finals. Győr wanted to celebrate the national title at home so they asked to switch the venue of the first game, which was duly played in Budapest, but Ambros Martin s team lost on penalties after a thrilling draw (24:21). Much to their surprise the holders suddenly found themselves in need of fighting for their crown, but Ferencváros gathered momentum and won in Győr 27:25. It was a turbulent summer for the Hungarian powerhouse on the player s market as they said farewell to many players and replaced them the likes of Nycke Groot, Yvette Broch, Eva Kiss or Linn-Jorum Sulland. 15 GROUP 1 Glassverket (NOR) With Larvik maintaining their almost perfect form throughout the previous season, the rest of the league could only have sights on a place in the final against them. Glassverket finished second in the main round and won their semi-finals against Byasen with ease. The first final proved to be a close encounter as Larvik came away with a 28:27 win before cruising to the title in the second leg. Even the final defeat was enough for the Drammen-based club to launch their maiden European campaign. It would really mean a lot to us, but we also realise that it will be extremely difficult, as we will almost certainly have to get past Györ, who are one of the strongest teams in Europe, says head coach Kenneth Gabrielsen. We feel very well prepared for the task. We had a good pre-season phase and a great start to the Norwegian league season, defeating Byasen by 11 goals. I also feel that we have a good knowledge about Dalfsen and I think we have a very good chance to defeat them and reach the final. I am in no doubt, though, that our opponent in the deciding match will be Györ, and this reduces our chances considerably. Of course, we have a very good knowledge of Györ. We know what their Norwegian players, Heidi Loke, Linn Jorum Sulland and Kari Aalvik Grimsbo can do, but Györ have so many other star players such as Amorim, Tomori and others. 18 GROUP 1 SERCODAK Dalfsen (NED) Dalfsen have won the fifth title in their club s history in style last season, beating VOC Amsterdam in the play-off finals twice. With five national titles, they are now the fifth most successful club in the history of Dutch women s handball. The team of head coach Peter Portengen were never troubled in the finals as they cruised to gold. Dalfsen have crowned their incredible season with the title after winning all 18 matches in the regular season prior to the play-offs, including two victories against eventual runners-ups VOC. In the upcoming season the team will look much different as many players such as Kelly Dulfer, Inger Smits (both VfL Oldenburg), Esther Shovel (Nantes Loire Atlantique Handball) and Myrthe Schoenaker (Füchse Berlin) left the club and were replaced by many teenagers who pushed the age average well below 20 years. We are used to be something like a training company. We educate young players, bring them to a high level - and then they leave abroad, mainly to Germany or Denmark. 21 GROUP 1 WHC Radnicki Kragujevac (SRB) ZRK Radnicki Kragujevac took no prisoners in their title defence campaign last season, as they went on a hot streak of 21 matches without defeat in Serbian Championship. A last round slump in Novi Sad against Minaqua (34:35) did not overshadow the dominance displayed by the Tigresses, winning 13 of their 22 matches played by double-digits. Young Serbian national team right back Andjela Janjusevic led the way for Radnicki, with excellent efficiency displayed when needed the most. The cup final win against the biggest rivals ZORK Jagodina (26:18) exemplified the effectiveness of a blend of youth and experience in a team coached by Aleksandar Radosavljevic. Last year Kragujevac sprang a surprise by eliminating FC Midtjylland in the semi-final of the qualification tournament on the home court, but failed in the final against Podravka. This time around their chances are even smaller as they travel to Norway with a squad which players have just 18,95 years on averge. In a packed Lascar Pana venue, the hosts, HCM Baia Mare, Team Esbjerg from Denmark, Ankara Yenimahalle BSK from Turkey, and the Belarusian champions, BNTU BelAZ Minsk Region, will fight for one ticket to the Group Phase with Larvik HK, RK Krim Mercator and Rostov-Don. GROUP 2 Team Esbjerg (DEN) vs Ankara Yenimahalle BSK (TUR) The Danish powerhouse endured an agonising loss in last season s local championship final, after a 22:23 loss and a 22:22 draw against FC Midtjylland. But the Danish insist last season s woes are behind them, as they embark on their first ever EHF Women s Champions League game. Their opponent, Ankara Yenimahalle BSK, is also a fresh face in Europe s top flight competition, but they come with an experienced line-up: Croatian right wing Anita Gace, Polish goalkeeper Anna Wysokinska and Women s EHF Champions League finalist Yeliz Ozel. However, Esbjerg will be the clear favourite with Estavana Polman in superb form. The Dutch back scored 22 goals in her team s first three official matches and will look to add to her tally in Baia Mare. HCM Baia Mare (ROU) vs BNTU-BelAZ Minsk Region (BLR) Two seasons ago, Baia Mare shocked Danish handball by qualifying after beating against Viborg HK and Team Tvis Holstebro. The connection between that performance and 2015 is home advantage and the vocal home crowd of Baia Mare. But before the Romanians could possibly meet another Danish team in a qualifying tournament final, Aurelian Rosca s team have to overcome BNTU BelAZ Minsk Region. However, the pressure is on the Romanian side: Our main focus is on Saturday against Minsk. The only goal for us is to qualify for the Group Phase. Anything less will be disappointing. That doesn t mean it is going to be easy. It will be very tough but we will give everything to qualify in front of our own fans, said Lois Abbingh, Baia Mare s left back. It s Baia Mare s qualification to lose, after a flurry of changes that have seen huge changes in their roster. In the coaching department, Aurelian Rosca replaced Tone Tiselj, while several important players like Barbara Arenhart, Ekaterina Davydenko, Ksenia Makeeva, Anastasia Lobach and Camilla Herrem have all left the team. French star Allison Pineau, Croatian line-player Katarina Jezic, promising Romanian back Gabriela Perianu, experinced goalkeeper Ionica Munteanu and defensive specialist Gabriela Preda have bolstered Baia Mare s squad. This Romanian side is seeking their third consecutive qualification to the group stage. 25

26 GROUP 2 Team Esbjerg (DEN) In the previous season having won the regular season by one point ahead of FC Midtjylland, Esbjerg went into the playoffs in a confident mood. Two one-goal wins against reigning champions Viborg in the semi-finals set up a tense final clash with Midtjylland. Despite holding a five-goal lead ten minutes before the final whistle, Midtjylland only managed to land a 23:22 win in the first leg. The final debutants from Esbjerg, though, did not manage to benefit from the narrow difference in the second leg in front of more than 3,000 spectators in the Blue Water Dokken and they had to be content with silver after a 22:22 draw. Team Esbjerg has already celebrated European success in the recent past. In 2014, they reached the EHF Cup final but came up short against Lada. However, there is something much bigger on this line this weekend in Qualification Tournament 2, held in Romania, where home team HCM Baia Mare take on BNTU-BelAZ Minsk Region and Team Esbjerg take on Ankara Yenimahalle BSK in the semi-finals. With a super cup and league win against last season s champions FC Midtjylland, Team Esbjerg has had a perfect start to the season in the Danish league, and the Dutch back has great confidence in the team. We feel good right now and we play like a team. There are some details to improve on, but I think the weekend in Baia Mare will be great and I hope we will have a lot of fun, says Polman. Home side and potential opponents in the final Baia Mare are familiar foes to the new Esbjerg goalkeeper Filippa Idehn. Last season she played against the Romanian side in the main round with her former club IK Sävehof. They have lost some of their players since I played against them last season, but they are still a really good team. Playing on their home court will be very hard. You can barely hear yourself speak down there, so we need to prepare for the noise from the crowd, because they will do everything they can in order to make us lose the match, the Swedish goalkeeper says. 29 GROUP 2 HCM Baia Mare (ROU) Last season Baia Mare finished the regular season just ahead of CSM Buchuresti after both sides lost just two matches from 26. There was no stopping the Women s EHF Champions League Quarter-finalists in the playoffs, before they met CSM Buchuresti in the final and suffered two narrow defeats. After being granted an additional place, Baia Mare will have to make their way through qualification this season. For 53 years, HCM Baia Mare have never played in the European top flight. However, Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea s demise in 2013 meant that Romania had witnessed an important change and Baia Mare were ready to step up to the next level. The lessons were there to be learned it the first two seasons in the Champions League, but Baia Mare enjoyed a bright start to the competition, coming just short of the FINAL4 in Budapest last season, after a tough battle with Dinamo-Sinara in the quarter-finals. But the main topic of the summer in Baia Mare has been change. After the team lost the Romanian title to CSM Bucuresti, the management decided that coach Tone Tiselj was surplus to requirements. Aurelian Rosca, the former Oltchim assistant coach and the man who led Romania s U18 team to the gold medal in the Youth World Championship in 2014, was the chosen replacement. After five official games with Rosca, Baia Mare has yet to lose. The most impressive win was in the Romanian Supercup, 31:25, against CSM Bucuresti, on the champions home court. Rosca wanted to change our playing style into a faster one. We have some great and especially fast players and this can be our advantage. Personally I like this style of handball a lot, said left back Lois Abbingh.
