3 2 Warhawks Outlook First-year head coach John Schmidt takes the reigns in 2 of The University of Louisiana Monroe volleyball program with the goal of building on last s season success. The Warhawks return four letterwinners and one starter from last year s squad that finished seventh in the school s final year in the Southland Conference with an 8-1 record. ULM s 15 wins to 1 losses were the most for a Warhawk team since 1 (1-17). Schmidt will guide the team into their inaugural year in the Sun Belt Conference. The team will also change home venues in 2 and play all matches in the ULM Activities Center after 1 years of calling Brown Gymnasium home. There will be many challenges for our team this season, said Schmidt. We will need to look to our upperclassmen for leadership and work to develop a sense of accountability in order for us to be successful. Here is a position-by-position breakdown of this year s squad: SETTER Senior Darci Mika returns for her final year as the court general for the Warhawks. The three-year letterwinner sits 84 assists shy of passing Michelle Griffin s (184-87) total of 3,4 and becoming the all-time career assists leader at ULM. Last season, Mika averaged assists per game and earned Honorable Mention All-Southland Conference accolades. She is currently second all-time at ULM with 2,3 career assists. Darci is really going to be the core of the team, said Schmidt. Darci our most experienced player and will bring a lot of leadership to the team. I see her developing everyday and will require everyone on the team to be accountable. Mika will be the glue to hold the team together, specifically when we get in difficult times we will experience this year. Mika can lead the team through some trying times and have that short term memory we need to continue to play aggressive. OUTSIDE HITTER Redshirt freshman Desiree Goldsby and true freshman Megan Osborne will take the bulk of the play at the outside hitter position in 2. Goldsby has seen the game at this level from the sidelines last season and despite not a lot of in-game experience, knows what it will be like to play at the college level. We are going to work more with Desiree to be more dynamic with her shot selections so she mixes it up well, said Schmidt. I think she is physically strong enough to put a ball away and we will be working to give her more options at the net. Osborne is a very exciting player and played all three positions in the front row during club and high school. Megan may have to help us in the middle a little bit but she has always played at a high level in club so she brings that experience to the court, said Schmidt. Her flexibility and experience allows us to have an aggressive kind of leadership on the court. Redshirt junior Lindsey Ehlert will look to re-join the team as early as possible after off-season surgery. Ehlert has 51 career kills at ULM, including a sophomore campaign in 24 where she averaged 3.23 kills per game. MIDDLE BLOCKER The middle blocker position could be the strongest group on the team coming into the season. True freshman Mari O Neal from Mesquite, Texas will compete for time immediately along with junior transfer from Morehead State Jessica Ayodele and redshirt freshman Kristina Bright. Mari is a great player for dynamic sets and I am very excited to see what she can do in a game, said Schmidt. She has a lot of learning yet to do but that will come with experience. The idea that she could see a lot of court time, I think, has made her work that much harder to improve Senior setter Darci Mika is 84 assists shy from becoming ULM s all-time career assists leader. during the preseason. Ayodele could be ULM s most physical player on the net. In 25, she led Morehead State with a.25 hitting percentage with 14 kills on 352 attempts and 8 errors. Ayodele also led the Eagles in blocks per game (.5) and tied for the team lead in total blocks (45). Bright sat out most of last season, only seeing action in 13 games. She registered nine kills on 23 attempts and six total blocks. RIGHT SIDE Junior lefty Stephanie Hall will start at right side for the Warhawks. In 25, Hall finished with a.27 hitting percentage with 55 kills on 12 attempts and only 23 errors. The Washington, D.C. product played in 25 games and added 18 total blocks. Stephanie is a strong outside and right player but we will need her on the right side this season, said Schmidt. Stephanie is a lefty and is a tremendous athlete. She hits the ball well and is continuing to improve daily. LIBERO/DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST Junior transfer Ilima Sam Fong (Fresno State) will work in at libero in 2, filling the big shoes 25 Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year Sei Hee Hwang left before her departure last season. A setter for two seasons for the Bulldogs, Sam Fong is an athletic player would can serve, pass and attack with equal ability. Her hands may be seen setting, passing or attacking the ball for Schmidt. Ilima will be very strong for us and we are looking forward to continue the success we have had as a program at the libero position, said Schmidt. She can play a couple of spots on the court including setter and outside hitter but we will need her to be our primary passer this fall. Also returning is sophomore defensive specialist Nicole Schaferkotter after a solid freshman campaign. Schaferkotter played in 43 games in 25 and recorded nine service aces and 43 digs. SCHEDULE In 2, the Warhawks will move into their new digs at the ULM Activities Center and meet some new rivals in their first season playing in the Sun Belt Conference. Waiting for ULM before the opening of its conference slate however is a meeting with Southeastern Conference foe Auburn at the SMU Invitational. The Warhawks will also play the host Mustangs and Prairie View A&M. Next up for Schmidt s squad is a non-conference match with Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La., before heading to Waco, Texas for the Baylor Invitational. The Warhawks will take the court against the host Bears, UALR, Houston and New Mexico. Less than a week later, ULM heads to the Mississippi State Classic in Starkville, Miss. to play the Bulldogs on their home court as well as Jackson State and Grambling State. The team will play its first home match of the season against Northwestern State at the ULM Activities Center before heading to Birmingham, Ala. to play UNC-Asheville, Samford and Charlotte at the Samford Barber s Classic. The Warhawks will open conference play against Florida International in Miami, Fla. before heading to Boca Raton, Fla. to visit Florida Atlantic. ULM then hosts five consecutive home matches against Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Troy, South Alabama and Louisiana-Lafayette before playing four matches on the road. North Texas, Denver, Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky will host the Warhawks for the first time as conference foes. New Orleans comes to Monroe before ULM heads to Lafayette, La. and Denver and North Texas visit the ULM Activities Center before the Warhawks end their regular season with three road trips. The Warhawks end on the road against New Orleans, Arkansas State and Arkansas-Little Rock. 2 Media Guide 3

4 John Schmidt III Head Coach First Season John Schmidt became the eighth head coach in the history of The University of Louisiana Monroe volleyball program on April 13, 2. Schmidt spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach with the North Texas volleyball program. His responsibilities with the Mean Green included serving as recruiting coordinator, individual and team defense instruction and coordinating travel for the team. During his tenure with North Texas, Schmidt helped the Mean Green to second-place finishes in the Sun Belt s West Division in all three years. In addition to the team success, Schmidt coached numerous SBC All-Conference selections, including North Texas first All-America honoree, Corina Marginas. We are excited about the addition of John Schmidt to our staff, ULM director of athletics Bobby Staub said. He has a strong volleyball background that we feel will allow him to come in and build on the success that we experienced last season. The Baytown, Texas, native has 1 years of collegiate coaching experience, including stops at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and St. Edward s. He joined the TAMU-Corpus Christi staff for the program s first season of NCAA Division I competition before departing for Tarleton. Schmidt helped direct St. Edward s to a pair of NAIA national tournament appearances in four years, including a quarterfinal showing in 1. St. Edward s claimed its first-ever Southwest Region championship during Schmidt s tenure, in addition to winning two Heart of Texas Conference titles. He also served as the school s sports information director, a role in which he generated publicity for all of the Hilltoppers athletic programs as they made the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. Schmidt has been heavily involved in volleyball at the club level, serving as head coach of five different club teams over the past 1 years. Among his accomplishments at the club level are directing the Texas Block Party 1-year-olds to a berth in the Junior Olympic national tournament in the spring of 21. He has also worked with Corpus Christi, Greater Austin-Cedar Park, Club West End and the Austin Junior Association. Head Coach John Schmidt III He served two years as a seventh-and eighth-grade volleyball coach at Covington Middle School in Austin, with his teams finishing second in the city championships both years. A member of the American Coaches Association, Schmidt enjoys teaching youths at summer volleyball camps. He has worked more than 4 camps the past six years, including sessions at the University of Alabama Purdue and the University of Notre Dame. Schmidt earned a bachelor s degree in mass communications and a minor in exercise and sports science at then Southwest Texas State, now Texas State, where he was a member of the men s club volleyball team. He also attended Lee and Austin junior colleges and recently started working toward a master s degree at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. 5 Coaching Staff Brandy Bradley Assistant Coach First Season Brandy Bradley is entering her first year as an assistant volleyball coach at The University of Louisiana Monroe. Bradley joins the Warhawks after spending the past two seasons as the girl s head volleyball coach at Tavares High School in Tavares, Fla. During her tenure, she led Tavares to a overall record. Last year, Bradley also served as the assistant program coordinator for the Florida Region High Performance Program. She organized tryouts and helped rate athletes from the region. During that time Bradley was also the Lake County Juniors co-club director and head coach of the 18 s team in nearby Leesburg, Fla. Bradley earned her undergraduate degree from McNeese State (23) in agricultural science where she was a member of the Cowgirl volleyball team and team captain. The former Brandy Sheffield is married to Kirk Bradley and both reside in Monroe. The couple is expecting their first child in January. Sei Hee Hwang Student Assistant First Season Chris Taylor Volunteer Assistant First Season Chris Taylor enters his first year as a volunteer assistant with the Warhawk volleyball program in 2. Taylor comes to Monroe after most recently serving as an assistant coach at Western Carolina University in 25 and helped guide the Catamounts to a -25 overall record and a 7-11 posting in Southern Conference action. Before coaching at Western, Taylor served as an assistant at Manchester College in North Manchester, Ind. During his stint at Manchester, the Spartans ranked third in the league in digs (23.23/gm) and service aces (1.8/gm), with the digs mark ranked 23rd among all NCAA Division III schools. While at the Manchester, Taylor also served as the recruiting coordinator. Prior to Manchester, Taylor was at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., where he served as the video coordinator, equipment manager, and assisted with academic monitoring for the Shorewomen s program. A 1 graduate of Western Michigan University, Taylor played club volleyball as both a setter and right side hitter, acting as team captain during his senior year. He earned a Bachelors of Science in physical education, with a minor in health education. Following his graduation, Taylor returned to his alma mater in 21, serving as a volunteer coach, helping with on-court coaching and game management. He has also coached at the high school level at both Allegan High School in Allegan, Mich., and serving as the head varsity girls coach at Paw Paw High School in Paw Paw, Mich. At the latter, he led the Redskins to both the regular season and tournament championship in 23. Sei Hee Hwang enters her first season as a student assistant with the Warhawk volleyball program in 2 after a successful collegiate career. In 25, Hwang transferred to ULM and promptly became the school s single-season digs leader with 547 in 25. Hwang was named the Southland Conference s Newcomer of the Year and earned Honorable Mention All-Conference accolades. Prior to her time at ULM, Hwang played three seasons at Wayne State, in Detroit, Mich. She set the WSU school record with 2 digs as a junior. Hwang was selected to the 24 Daktronics, Inc. AllGreat Lakes Region Second Team as a junior and named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Libero of the year. Hwang is majoring in elementary education. Outlook: Bright has developed in the past two seasons and could help this year at middle blocker. 8 2 Warhawks Veterans Stephanie Hall Junior - 5- Right Side Washington, D.C. Seton HS Darci Mika Senior Setter Shawnee, Kan. St. Thomas Aquinas HS Outlook: Lefty with tremendous athletic ability. Will be a defensive factor for Warhawks on the right side of the net. Aggressive and not afraid to sacrifice for the loose ball. Outlook: Mika returns as a three-year starter for the Warhawks at setter and is expected to hold down the position in her final year.
