The Warhawks will open at the McNeese State Tournament against Lamar before facing the host-cowgirls - a 2007 College Cup team - in the fi nal game of opening weekend. Quoting Head Coach Stacy Lamb We have had a lot of very good training sessions and I believe we have hit all our preseason goals. As we have come closer to this weekend the girls are more focused and excited to be playing. There is great chemistry with this group already. We know the fi eld will be wet with all the rain lately, making everybody dangerous. Right now we are focused on Lamar and McNeese State and are looking to win a tournament championship right out of the gate. About the Opponents In only their second season of organized soccer, Lamar will be looking for the programs fi rst win after starting the season with a 4-0 loss at Texas Tech. Dewi Hardman is in his fi rst season as head coach of the Cardinals. Lamar returns 13 letterwinners and nine starters from last season s inaugural squad which posted an record. Hardman added nine new faces, including a pair of junior college transfers and seven freshmen for the season. McNeese State enters the weekend sporting an record after falling at 10th-ranked Texas A&M, 9-0, in the regular season opener and will face Grambling State in the second game of the tournament. The 2007 Cowgirls posted a perfect home ledger, going en route to a Southland Conference Championship. McNeese State edged Stephen F. Austin by one point in the preseason SLC coaches poll, 74-73, with each team pulling in fi ve fi rst place votes. A total of 13 letterwinners return from last season s record setting 12-win squad. The only head coach the program has ever known, Scooter Savoie boasts a all-time record. The Series History ULM and Lamar will face on the pitch for the fi rst time when the two programs open at the McNeese State Tournament. The Warhawks and Cowgirls have a longer history against each other on the pitch. Former Southland Conference rivals, ULM has faced McNeese State more times than any other opponent and holds a record. The 2007 season marked the only year in which the two did not face off on the soccer pitch since the ULM program started in the 1999 season. Five meetings between the two programs have gone into overtime with four going into a second extra frame. One of the Sun Belt Conference s youngest soccer programs, ULM has already amassed 70 wins - including 60 during the seven seasons head coach Stacy Lamb has been roaming the sidelines. Finishing Strong After a slow start in 2007, the ULM Warhawks fi nished strong over the fi nal 10 matches of the season. Playing against the Sun Belt Conference, ULM posted a 0.88 goals against average over the second half of the year and outscored their foes Despite their strong play, the Warhawks came one half game shy of making the Sun Belt tournament with a roster loaded with underclassmen. Of ULM s conference matches a year ago, seven were decided by a single goal including a 1-0 loss at defending champion Denver and a 2-1 loss against regular season champion Western Kentucky in Monroe, La. Captains Named In one of the closest votes in program history, seniors Rachel Hobson and Amanda Strope and junior Raydan Phillips were selected by their teammates as the three captains for the 2008 season. With several strong candidates and a tie after an initial round of voting, a second ballot selected the trio. For Hobson and Strope, the captaincy marks the second consecutive year they have worn the yellow C. Phillips was elected captain for the fi rst time in her collegiate career. Six Strong Despite having a roster that features nine freshmen, the 2008 Warhawk soccer squad is marked by the largest senior class in program history. A total of six seniors with a combined 175 starts are on the ULM roster. Seniors Rachel Hobson, Kendall Dawkins, Jeana Chesnik, Amanda Strope, Brittany Lee and Rachel Spady make up the class. Although Lee and Spady have seen their playing careers cut short by injury, the entire group has set the standard for ULM soccer on and off the fi eld. Looking for Respect In the minds of the Sun Belt Conference coaches, ULM s strong fi nish to the 2007 season did not carry over into the 2008 preseason poll. Of the 12 teams in the league, the Warhawks were projected to fi nish 10th overall, four points ahead of Arkansas State and 16 behind No. 8 UALR. Denver once again pulled down the top preseason ranking after claiming nine fi rst place votes and 141 total points. North Texas tallied the other two fi rst place votes while defending regular season champion Western Kentucky rounded out the top three. None of the Warhawks were included on the preseason all-conference team. Freshman Duo Wins National Championship While the majority of the ULM soccer team was relaxing during the summer and preparing for the upcoming season, freshmen Emily LyBarger and Kelly Browne were leading their club, Rush Nike, to a club soccer national championship. After advancing through regional play, the Colorado Rush went through the national tournament in Little Rock, Ark. unscathed for the team title. Saving the Day Only two season s into her ULM career, junior goalkeeper Mallory George is already knocking on the door of some prestigious program records. After posting back-to-back 100+ save seasons to open her career, George ranks third all-time at ULM in saves with only nine shy of second all-time and Jessica Robinson s three-year total. The Centennial, Colo., native is also making moves in the conference s record book. Her career saves total ranks fourth all-time in the Sun Belt Conference. Since coming to ULM, the Longmont, Colo., native has seen starts at defender, in the midfi eld, and at forward. Starting her fourth and fi nal season on the pitch, Hobson sits three starts shy of becoming the programs all-time Iron Woman by setting the career record for consecutive starts.
