Despite junior Jarvis Hill scoring a game-high 19 points in his personal homecoming, the Warhawks hit on only 29 percent of their shots as a team Since joining the Sun Belt prior to the campaign, the Warhawks have faced members of their former league in non-conference action three times. ULM is 1-2 against the Southland during that stretch, winning at home against Nicholls State in and falling at Stephen F. Austin and Nicholls State in Sitting at all-time in Fant-Ewing Coliseum under head coach Orlando Early, the Warhawks will be looking to extend one of the nation s top home court advantages when they host the Cowboys. Overtime On Television Against McNeese State Former Rivals Reunite at Fant-Ewing Coliseum After a brief hiatus in the series history, longtime rivals ULM and McNeese State reunite for the fi rst of two games in the season on Thursday night at 7 p.m. The Warhawks and Cowboys have not faced since the conclusion of the season, ULM s last campaign in the Southland Conference. The Series with McNeese State ULM leads the all-time series against its former league foe by a comfortable margin despite falling in 10 of the last 15 meetings. The Warhawks have dominated the all-time series in their home building, winning three of the last fi ve. ULM has gone all-time against McNeese State in Monroe, La. At ULM: ULM leads, At McNeese State: ULM trails, At Neutral Sites: ULM trails, 1-0 Scouting the Cowboys McNeese State enters Thursday night s game 0-1 overall after falling at Tulane, 68-62, in its season opener. Under Dave Simmons - in his third season at McNeese State - the Cowboys returned two front court starters from last season s squad, but have had to replace all three guards. Against Tulane, John Pichon scored a team-high 17 points and added 10 rebounds for a doubledouble. Diego Kaplan came off the bench and added 14 points in 18 minutes while P.J. Alawoya fi nished with a team-high 11 rebounds. Last Time Against McNeese State ULM struggled on offense from start to fi nish in a loss against McNeese State on February 23, 2006 inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum in the lowest Warhawk point total under head coach Orlando Early. Tony Hooper fi nished tied with Drew Meyerchick for the team lead with eight points while four McNeese State starters topped double digits in points led by a game-high 14 by Drew Boatner. ULM connected on 28.3 percent of its shots from the fi eld, including 23.1 percent from beyond the arc in the loss against the program s long-time league rival. Last ULM Win in the Series In his fi rst chance at ULM-rival McNeese State, head coach Orlando Early led the Warhawks to a win in Lake Charles, La. on January 21, ULM trailed entering the intermission, but used a stiff defense in the second half to limit McNeese State to 22 percent shooting. Five Warhawks topped double digits in the game led by 18 from Lance Brasher. ULM out scored the Cowboys by 10 points in the second half for the win. ULM Against the Southland Conference ULM dominated the Southland for nearly a quarter of a century and fi nished with a combined league record while playing in its former conference. ULM fi nished with six 20 win seasons while a member of the Southland Conference and fi nished two other campaigns with 19 wins. Starting with the season, ULM claimed a league regular season or tournament title eight times while playing in the Southland Conference, including every year from the season through the campaign. The Warhawks fi nished second in the regular season standings six other times before joining the Sun Belt Conference prior to the campaign. ULM leads the all-time series against every current member of the Southland Conference, except one. Leads Central Arkansas, 3-1; Trails Lamar, 26-24; Leads McNeese State, 61-54; Leads Nicholls State, 53-16; Leads Northwestern State, 70-47; Leads Sam Houston State, 19-17; Leads Southeastern Louisiana, 60-30; Leads Stephen F. Austin, 29-18; Leads Texas-Arlington, 46-12; Leads Texas-San Antonio, 19-13; Leads Texas State, Up Next ULM wraps up a brief two-game home stand when it hosts Stephen F. Austin as the second game of a men s/women s home doubleheader on November 25 at approximately 7:30 p.m. The Warhawks will then embark on a season-long fi ve-game road swing starting at Tennessee Tech on November 29 and ending in the conference opener at Louisiana-Lafayette on December 15. The road trip for ULM will include stops at Auburn, at Louisiana Tech, and at McNeese State.

5 ULM s Dynamic Duo Coming into the season everyone knew about the scoring prowess of ULM senior Tony Hooper, but the emergence of junior transfer Jarvis Hill has come as a pleasant surprise. The 6-3 wing from East Mississippi Community College fi nished his fi rst week averaging 20.5 points per game and has combined with Hooper (14.0 ppg) to score 65.7 percent of ULM s points in the early part of the season. Gaining a reputation as a defensive stopper already, Hill has averaged 3.5 steals and three rebounds in his fi rst two games with the Warhawks. Hooper has also gone to the glass aggressively to begin the season and has averaged fi ve rebounds, including four defensive, over ULM s fi rst two games. Warhawks D Up to Start the Through two games in the campaign, the ULM men s basketball team has featured one of the top ball-hawking defenses in the league. Forcing 18 opponent turnovers per game in the early part of the campaign - the third most of any Sun Belt teams - the Warhawks have relied on defense instead of offense during the early part of the season. In both games in, the Warhawks have posted more offensive rebounds than their opponents while facing some of the top front courts from their respective conferences (Mississippi State in the SEC and Morehead State in the OVC). Offense Struggles in Exhibition Loss Junior Jarvis Hill scored a team-high 21 points and came one board shy of a double-double for the Warhawks in a loss to William Carey University in ULM s lone exhibition game of the season. Senior Afam Nweke added a double-double off the bench with 14 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Brandon Williams added nine points and three boards. ULM struggled from the git-go on offense and fi nished the game with 23 turnovers and a 38.2 percent fi eld goal clip. Enjoying a noticeable difference in the paint, the Warhawks had three times as many offensive rebounds as the Crusaders (15-5) and turned that into a 20-6 advantage in second chance points. The ULM coaches experimented with different line-ups and combinations on the fl oor in the loss with mixed levels of success. Hooper Tabbed Second Team All-Conference In the preseason vote by the Sun Belt Conference s coaches and sports information departments, ULM senior Tony Hooper was named to the preseason all-league second team. A Houston, Texas, native, Hooper was named to the league s third team prior to the season. The Warhawks leading scorer the past three season s - including last year at 15.1 points per game - Hooper ranks in the top 20 for career points at ULM and in the top 10 in multiple other categories. Warhawks Picked Fifth In League s West Division by Sun Belt Coaches No team has proved more that the league s preseason polls don t matter than the ULM Warhawks. In their fi rst season in the Sun Belt, the Warhawks were projected to fi nish last in the West Division before fi nishing in a tie for the top spot. In , ULM was projected to fi nish fi rst in a wide-open West before ending the season seventh. With three seniors returning - including a pair of starters - and an infl ux of young talent, the Warhawks should be in the mix again despite being projected by the league s coaches to fi nish fi fth in the West Division, mere points behind the projected fourthplace team Arkansas State. The preseason favorite in the league, Middle Tennesseee, fi nished 15-15, but join West Division favorite UALR in returning all fi ve starters from last season s squad. In total, 37 starters - an average of just under three per team - return for their various squads for the upcoming season. Destination: Hot Springs Starting this season, the Sun Belt Conference s championship tournament will be held in Hot Springs, Ark. at the Summit Arena. While the fi rst round will be played once again at on-campus sites, the quarterfi nals through the fi nals will return to a neutral site for the fi rst time since the 1993 season when the league s championship was played at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss. Mascot Mania - ULM Edition One of only two schools in the country that utilize the Warhawk (Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater is the other), ULM s mascot is unique to north Louisiana. Encompassing a dual-connection to the local hawks that fl y around the area bayous and the P-40 Warhawk airplanes fl own by northeast Louisiana s General Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers during World War II, the Warhawk provides a unique fl air for ULM and the community. Mascot Mania - Opponent Edition Amongst all the four-year institutions in the country, Bulldogs is one of the most common mascots, trailing only Eagles (used 74 times) and Tigers (used 46 times). There are 39 schools that use Bulldogs as their nickname with three of them on the ULM schedule. The Warhawks second game of the season, a November 17 date at Mississippi State, is the fi rst instance of ULM facing a Bulldog in the campaign, but won t be the last time the Warhawks face a canine. In addition to MSU, ULM will face the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and the Union College Bulldogs. Also on the Warhawks schedule are three games against Eagles, including the season opener against Morehead State and a pair of games against the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech. ULM s schedule also features games against two of the six four-year schools that utilize the Trojan as their mascot - Sun Belt Conference-foes Troy and UALR. Congressman Early Begins First Term In the spirt of election season, ULM head coach Orlando Early solidifi ed his position as one of the top coaches in the Sun Belt Conference with his appointment to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I congress as the representative of the 13-team league. Serving as the liaison between the NABC and the Sun Belt Conference coaches, Early s responsibilities are to champion the sport of collegiate basketball and advocate for its best interests in current and future endeavors. Starting at Home In stark contrast to his fi rst three seasons in Monroe, ULM head coach Orlando Early s squad opened the season on friendly ground. The Warhawks opened the regular season at home for the fi rst time in Early s four-year tenure when they hosted Morehead State on November 14. The 2008 season opener also marked the second time that the Warhawks opened against an unranked team - the fi rst since playing Eastern Illinois to open the campaign. In each of the previous two seasons, ULM played fi ve straight games away from Fant-Ewing Coliseum before appearing in front of the home crowd. This season, three of the Warhawks fi rst four games are at home. Step-Back Three The major rule change in men s collegiate basketball this past season may have a direct impact on the offense of the Warhawks. One of the Sun Belt Conference s leading 3-point shooting teams since joining the league for the season, ULM will have to take a step back to attempt the long ball. Over the summer, the 3-point line was moved back - from 19 feet nine inches to On the 20-year anniversary of the institution of the 3-point line, the stripe has made its fi rst move backwards in the collegiate game. ESPN Ranks ULM Amongst Nation s Top Programs ESPN.com spent the summer counting down the top 100 programs in the history of men s college basketball and a familiar program made the list. Coming in at No. 96, ULM s storied history on the hard court once again garnered national attention. Including a period of time that spans since the

7 1984 campaign, ULM ranks in a tie with the Southeastern Conference s Vanderbilt on the list. Counting the current Sun Belt Conference member institutions, ULM ranks fourth behind only Western Kentucky (43), South Alabama (T-82), and New Orleans (88). The Warhawks would also be the highest ranking program of its former league, the Southland Conference, besting Texas-San Antonio by 61 spots. A Load of to Replace The start of the season brings a big question for the ULM men s basketball team - how to replace the scoring of departed starters Lance Brasher, Jonas Brown and Jordan Payne. A trio of transfers, the combo provided the Warhawks with 2,367 points during their careers. Payne scored 821 points in two years at ULM while Brown came just short of the mark at 798 during his Warhawk career. A three-year letterwinner for the Warhawks, Brasher chipped in 748 career points. Entering the season, senior guard Tony Hooper represented the lone holdover on the team with a signifi cant career point total - 1,243. The next most career points at the Division I level by a Warhawk were scored by senior forward Afam Nweke in 79 total games entering the campaign. Home Grown Talent Some of ULM s greatest basketball stars have come from Monroe and neighboring parishes. The roster has a distinctly local fl are as four players hometowns are within 100 miles of Fant- Ewing Coliseum. Sophomores Mitchell Hampton (Ouachita HS) and Raschard Boatner (Richwood HS) call the city of Monroe home, while sophomore Rudy Turner (Peabody HS) is from nearby Alexandria and freshman A.J. Toms (Weston HS) is from Jonesboro. Hitting the Big Easy Of the 12 Division I basketball playing schools in the state of Louisiana, none have hit the New Orleans area harder for men s basketball student-athletes then ULM and UNO. Of the Warhawks 15-man roster, four (senior David Garrison, junior Kenneth Averette, and sophomores Lawrence Gilbert and Nathaniel Roche) call the Big Easy home. The Privateers, located in New Orleans, have kept four local stars on their roster. There are 13 total New Orleans-natives listed on Division I basketball rosters in the state of Louisiana with the majority playing in the Sun Belt Conference (four at ULM, four at New Orleans, and three at Louisiana-Lafayette). Southern University, located in Baton Rouge, is the lone other men s basketball squad with student-athletes from New Orleans. ULM also has one coach - assistant Harold Juluke - from the area, giving the Warhawks the Big Easy connection. Bulking Up After featuring an undersized roster for the majority of his head coaching career at ULM, Warhawk coach Orlando Early s squad features an infl ux of size. With the development of sophomores Rudy Turner (6-8) and Mitchell Hampton (6-7), the addition of junior Malcolm Thomas (6-6), and the return of senior Afam Nweke (6-7), the Warhawks look to be a more intimidating presence in the paint. ULM will get added size in the paint as sophomores Nathaniel Roche (6-8) and Lawrence Gilbert (6-7) are eligible to join the team after redshirting a season ago. A Point of Emphasis With injuries to the point guard position plaguing the Warhawks over the fi rst few years of Orlando Early s tenure in Monroe, the ULM head coach is taking few chances for the upcoming season. Junior Brandon Roberts appeared in ULM s exhibition game against William Carey, played 17 minutes, and contributed four points and two assists. He started ULM s season opener against Morehead State and added four assists. During the offseason, Early and staff added transfer Reggie Lassiter and freshman Brandon Williams to a group that includes junior Kenneth Averette, a walk-on turned starter in Counting sophomore Raschard Boatner - redshirting this season following offseason surgery - the Warhawks have fi ve players who s primary position is point guard on the roster. Warhawks Lend a Helping Hand With the coast of Louisiana hit hard by Hurricane Gustav in August, members of the ULM men s basketball team elected to lend a helping hand to those in need. It s TV Time for the Warhawks The ULM men s basketball team is included twice in the television package announced during the preseason by the Sun Belt Conference. In addition to playing Auburn in a televised game by Comcast Sports Southeast on December 6, the Warhawks game against Troy will serve as the league Game of the Week on Saturday, January 17 inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Seeing Stripes ULM fans may notice a slight change when the team takes the court this season. The Warhawk men s basketball team made the switch to Adidas apparel over the summer, joining the athletic department s 15 other sports. ULM makes the change from the Nike swoosh to the three stripes of Adidas for the upcoming campaign. A New Face on the Sidelines While all of Orlando Early s assistant coaches return for the season, the ULM staff suffered a big loss over the summer. Longtime Warhawk athletic trainer Robert Williamson retired after a career that spanned four coaches and three different conferences. Starting with the season, Williamson observed some of the greatest players in program history, sat on the sidelines for 12 conference or divisional championships, and witnessed 515 ULM wins. Stepping in for Williamson as the athletic trainer for the men s basketball team is 1998 ULM graduate J.D. Dunavant. Familiar with winners, Dunavant worked with the ULM softball team in the season it advanced to the NCAA Tournament - and has worked with nationally ranked football and track and fi eld programs while with Arkansas. Warhawks Add Mingo During Early Signing Period The ULM men s basketball team and head coach Orlando Early announced the signing of former West Monroe-star Hugh Mingo to a national letter of intent for the season on Thursday morning. Seeing the value and talent of basketball athletes in north Louisiana, ULM has made a commitment under Early to add area prep stars to the roster. Eight players on the current roster hail from Louisiana with three playing at least one year for a Monroe-area high school. Mingo originally committed with the Warhawks out of high school before opting to take the junior college route. He was part of a recruiting class that included current Warhawks and area prep stars Rudy Turner (Peabody HS-Alexandria, La.) and Mitchell Hampton (Ouachita HS-Monroe, La.). Mingo, an athletic 6-3 guard, will join the Warhawks after his sophomore season at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. As a freshman with the Texans, Mingo averaged 6.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in helping lead his team to a 30-5 record and a national championship. Early in his sophomore campaign, Mingo is averaging 15.3 points and two steals per game while hitting on 62.5 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. At West Monroe High School, Mingo averaged 18 points, 13 rebounds and six assists per game for a 29-7 squad. He was a four-year starter and a three-time all-district selection. Warhawks Add Carr During Early Signing Period The ULM men s basketball team tapped into its New Orleans pipeline once again when prep star Colby Carr signed a National Letter of Intent during the early period to play with the Warhawks starting with the season. Carr, entering his senior season at O.P. Walker High School, will become the fi fth New Orleans native to sign with ULM since Orlando Early was named head coach. He will join current Warhawks David Garrison, Nathaniel Roché, Kenneth Averette, and Lawrence Gilbert. A 6-3 wing, Carr averaged 15 points and seven rebounds per game as a junior in helping O.P. 11 Orlando Early ULM Head Coach Gardner-Webb, 90 Fourth Overall On April 11, 2005 former Alabama assistant Orlando Early was named the sixth head coach of the ULM men s basketball program. An enthusiastic leader and proven winner, Early instantly became the face of one of the region s most historic programs, leading the Warhawks into the Sun Belt Conference and establishing him as one of the rising stars of the collegiate basketball coaching fraternity. Now entering his fourth season at the helm, Early has proven himself in short time as the best man to return the program to the successes it experienced during its gloried past. Under Early s guidance, the Warhawks have returned to their dominant ways inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum posting a home record in his fi rst three seasons. During one stretch, including the entire season, ULM rattled off 15-consecutive home victories a streak that reached as high as sixth nationally before it ended on a buzzer beating shot. Early - The Head Coach With only three seasons under his belt at ULM, it hasn t taken long for Early to experience the highs and lows that come with being the head coach of collegiate basketball program. He was hired with the daunting task of succeeding the program s only 400-game winner and the Southland Conference s all-time winningest coach in Mike Vining. The off-court challenges came before Early s fi rst ULM squad ever took to the fl oor. On August 23, 2005 just over four months after the coach s appointment the southern half of the Warhawks home state was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. The squad featured two players and an assistant coach directly affected by the disaster. Already an uphill battle with a program that failed to tally double-digit wins for the fi rst time in 46 seasons, Early guided the team to a overall record. One year later the Warhawks joined the Sun Belt Conference and, under Early s guidance, made their presence known immediately. Picked in the preseason league polls to fi nish last, the Earlyled Warhawks raced out to a 4-0 league start and ended the season with an 11-7 conference mark. With an overall record marking the program s fi rst winning campaign since the season, ULM won a share of the West Division title. The team advanced to the quarterfi nal round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament before being knocked out in overtime by eventual champion North Texas. ULM s postseason win and winning league record were also the fi rst for the program since the campaign. Having taken the league by storm during his sophomore campaign, Early garnered Coach of the Year honors from four different outlets, including the Sun Belt Conference, Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches, Louisiana Sports Writers Association, and National Association of Basketball Coaches. Early also ended the season as a fi nalist for the Hugh Durham Mid-Major Coach of the Year award. With high expectations for the season, ULM opened at eventual national champion Kansas and became the only program on the season to convert on better than 50 percent of their fi eld goals in the loss to the Jayhawks. ULM challenged nationally ranked Michigan State in the CBE Classic before breaking out with a win over the Big 10 s Iowa in the opening round of the Hawkeye Challenge. From hunter to hunted, ULM entered the conference slate with a.500 record and ready to defend its divisional title from the previous season. A buzzer-beating shot in the league opener, coupled with some unlucky bounces along the way culminated in a season that ended with a fi rst-round loss at Middle Tennessee in the Sun Belt Conference tournament. Through his fi rst three seasons as a head coach, Early has led the Warhawks to a overall record. Early - The Assistant Beginning his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Gardner-Webb, in the season, Early began a meteoric rise over the next ten years. His work in a supporting role became nationally recognized and culminated in an appearance in Athlon magazine s Fall 2004 basketball issue as the third best assistant coach in the nation. With Early on the sideline, teams have posted a winning record nine times including fi ve seasons with 20 or more wins and advanced to the NCAA Tournament on seven occasions. After two seasons with his alma mater, Early joined the staff at Western Carolina for the season. In his fi rst year as an assistant with the Catamounts, Early helped the team to the Southern Conference championship and his fi rst NCAA Tournament appearance. One year later, he was promoted to associate head coach a position he served in for two seasons. Prior to the season, Early continued his coaching assent by joining Bobby Lutz s staff as an assistant at UNC-Charlotte. In three seasons with the 49ers, Early helped the team to a pair of Conference USA titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances, an NIT appearance and overall record. Three years later Alabama s Mark Gottfried came calling for Early and added him to his staff as an assistant coach prior to the season. On December 23 of his fi rst season in Tuscaloosa, Alabama reached a No. 1 national ranking on their way to an SEC regular season championship and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance. In four seasons with the Crimson Tide, Early helped the team to four-consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Alabama topped 20 wins three times with the ULM head coach on the sidelines and posted a combined record. Early The Player Before starting his collegiate coaching career Early served as the fl oor general of the Gardner-Webb Running Bulldogs in Boiling Springs, N.C. As the team s point guard, he helped the team to the 1988 NAIA District 26 title. A four-year letterwinner as a point guard, he graduated with a degree in accounting in Early The Person An avid teacher of the game, Early spends his summers teaching the game of basketball to youth in the Monroe, La. area. In the summer of 2008, Early returned to his hometown of Lebanon, Va. to conduct his fi rst youth basketball camp in the area. More than just a basketball teacher, Early has instilled in his players a responsibility to the community they live in. Following Hurricane Katrina Early and his fi rst team of Warhawks volunteered during the relief efforts - lending an ear, serving food, and organizing supplies for those displaced by the disaster. This past summer, the Warhawks were at it again, helping ease the pain of those families that were displaced to Monroe, La. due to Hurricane s Gustav and Ike. Early is married to the former Jualeah Johnson. The couple has three children, Nakita, Storm and Erica. A native of Lebanon, Va., he was born on November 27, 1967.
