PASSMORE TABBED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM The freshman libero has performed better than coach Rhodes could have expect thru the first seven games of the season. At the squad s home tournament, country Inn & Suites Volleyball Challenege, Passmore dug up 67 opponent attacks and had two service aces. The Merrit Island, Fla., native has eclipsed her season-high twice this season with 33 digs against Tennessee State on Sept. 8 and Autin Peay. Most impresive was that she had 33 digs in three sets in the first home match of the season vs. Austin Peay, one shy of a Top 20 spot in the NCAA Record Book for digs in a three-set match. BROCK DOUBLES UP THE TIGERS, RAMBLERS A transfer from Middle Tennessee, sophomore outside hitter Laura Brock impressed the coaches with her consistency during preseason camp. Brock was not one of the top performers during the season s opening weekend, but she made up for that with a double-doubles against Tennessee State and Loyola (Ill.). The Chattanooga native posted a season-high 13 kills against the Tigers along with 10 digs, while recording 12 kills and a season-high 14 digs against the Ramblers DIGGING UP THE COMPETITION Freshman libero Paula Passmore recorded an astounding 33 digs in her collegiate debut against East Tennessee State and tied that mark at Tennessee State a week later. She has continued to impress by leading the Southern Conference with an average of 5.73 digs per set. The individual closest to Passmore averages more than one and a half less dig per set. HITTING EFFECTIVELY Junior middle blocker Courtney Barnes is second in the Southern Conference with a.339 hitting percentage. Barnes has notched 76 kills on the season placing her fifth on the conference s individual list. The team s other middle blocker, sophomore Ellie Kuhn has an attack percentage of.284 slotting her at ninth in the conference. Brock, Passmore and Beasley all started the first contest against East Tennessee State for Chattanooga, while Parman, Teter and Ernd saw action in the second match of the day against Morehead State. Beasley recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs in the opening match, while Parman saved her best performance for James Madison posting 21 kills and 12 digs. STARTING THE SEASON OFF RIGHT The 2009 Lady Mocs are the first team since 2001 to open the season with a victory. Chattanooga defeated East Tennessee State, 3-1 to begin the Comfort Inn & Suites Volleyball Challenge. Back in 2001, UTC knocked off Jackson State in three sets to open the campaign. Since that victory, the Lady Mocs have faced fierce competition to start the season including battling Tennessee, South Florida and DePaul. DRAMATIC FIFTH SET TRIUMPH After taking the first two sets on Saturday against James Madison, the Lady Mocs left the door open for the Dukes who took the next two sets. In the final frame, James Madison came out quick firing on all cylinders grabbing a 3-9 lead. The Lady Mocs battled back 9-13 with junior Bailee Chastain on the service line. The Signal Mountain, Tenn., native put all of her serves in play as Chattanooga rattled off the next six points in succession coming away with a victory. COURTNEY CONTINUES CONSISTENT PLAY Junior middle blocker Courtney Barnes has been a force for the Lady Mocs at the net over the past two seasons. In the opening tournament, Barnes continued where she left off registering 35 kills, a.419 hitting percentage and 10 total blocks. These numbers earned her a spot on the Comfort Inn & Suites Volleyball Challenge All-Tournament Team. THE SURPRISE OF THE TOURNAMENT Freshman Heather Parman saw her first action of the season against Morehead State in the second game of the Comfort Inn and Suites Volleyball Challenge recording two kills. The final game against James Madison is where Parman shined for the Lady Mocs posting a double-double with 21 kills and 12 digs in a thrilling five-set victory. Her performance was enough to earn an all-tournament selection. FOLLOWING A LEGEND In the first match of the season, freshman libero Paula Passmore continued where former Lady Moc and NCAA record holder Laura Newberry left off with a 30 dig performance against East Tennessee State. The Merritt Island, Fla., native recorded a match-high 33 digs in a 3-1 victory for UTC. Passmore s digs per set average is at 5.08 after the first three matches and dug up 61 balls. FINDING LOCAL TALENT Six members of the squad went to high school in the Chattanooga area including five newcomers, Heather Parman, Dakota Davis, Christina Teter, Erica Cowart and Laura Brock. Junior Bailee Chastain is a local player that was on the squad last year. These local stars shined on the opening weekend of the season where five of them saw time on the court. NINE NEW FACES UTC s roster contains nine newcomers, including seven freshmen - four from Tennessee with one each from Florida, Indiana and Texas. Freshman Sarah Torgeson practiced with the Lady Mocs last year, while Laura Brock, a transfer from Middle Tennessee, and Dakota Davis, a transfer from Austin Peay, round out the newcomers looking to make an immediate impact in LADY MOCS TABBED FOURTH IN NORTH DIVISION Southern Conference coaches selected Chattanooga fourth in the North Division. Samford was given the nod for No. 1 in the north with eight first-place votes, while Elon received three and UNC Greensboro had one to round out the top three. College of Charleston was the favorite in the south recording 10 votes for No. 1, while Furman and Georgia Southern finished behind them each picking up a single first-place vote HOME SWEET HOME The young squad returns to its home gym to play its final tune-up game before Southern Conference play against Belmont Sept. 23 at 6:30 p.m. Then, the Lady Mocs begin SoCon play at Maclellan Gym where they host Elon on Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. and UNC-Greensboro the following day at 5 p.m. A TRUE HOME COURT ADVANTAGE Prior to the season, the Maclellan Gym floor was repainted to suit the volleyball team. Volleyballs now cover two corner boundaries and the Chattanooga Power-C Logo at the center. WEEK FOUR - SEPT CHATTANOOGA VOLLEYBALL 4
