At the squad s home tournament, country Inn & Suites Volleyball Challenge, Passmore dug up 67 opponent attacks and had two service aces. The Merritt Island, Fla., native has eclipsed her season-high twice this season with 33 digs against Tennessee State on Sept. 8 and Austin Peay. Most impressive was that she had 33 digs in three sets in the first home match of the season vs. Austin Peay, one shy of a Top 20 spot in the NCAA Record Book for digs in a three-set match. BROCK DOUBLES UP THE TIGERS, RAMBLERS A transfer from Middle Tennessee, sophomore outside hitter Laura Brock impressed the coaches with her consistency during preseason camp. Brock was not one of the top performers during the season s opening weekend, but she made up for that with a double-doubles against Tennessee State and Loyola (Ill.). The Chattanooga native posted a season-high 13 kills against the Tigers along with 10 digs, while recording 12 kills and a season-high 14 digs against the Ramblers DIGGING UP THE COMPETITION Freshman libero Paula Passmore recorded an astounding 33 digs in her collegiate debut against East Tennessee State and tied that mark at Tennessee State a week later. She has continued to impress by leading the Southern Conference with an average of 5.73 digs per set. The individual closest to Passmore averages more than one and a half less dig per set. HITTING EFFECTIVELY Junior middle blocker Courtney Barnes is second in the Southern Conference with a.339 hitting percentage. Barnes has notched 76 kills on the season placing her fifth on the conference s individual list. The team s other middle blocker, sophomore Ellie Kuhn has an attack percentage of.284 slotting her at ninth in the conference. SIX PLAYERS MAKE LADY MOCS DEBUT Sophomore outside hitter Laura Brock and freshmen libero Paula Passmore, outside hitter Kirsten Beasley, outside hitter Heather Parman, middle blocker Christina Teter and outside hitter Meagan Ernd played over the weekend. Brock, Passmore and Beasley all started the first contest against East Tennessee State for Chattanooga, while Parman, Teter and Ernd saw action in the second match of the day against Morehead State. Beasley recorded a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs in the opening match, while Parman saved her best performance for James Madison posting 21 kills and 12 digs. STARTING THE SEASON OFF RIGHT The 2009 Lady Mocs are the first team since 2001 to open the season with a victory. Chattanooga defeated East Tennessee State, 3-1 to begin the Comfort Inn & Suites Volleyball Challenge. Back in 2001, UTC knocked off Jackson State in three sets to open the campaign. Since that victory, the Lady Mocs have faced fierce competition to start the season including battling Tennessee, South Florida and DePaul. DRAMATIC FIFTH SET TRIUMPH After taking the first two sets on Saturday against James Madison, the Lady Mocs left the door open for the Dukes who took the next two sets. In the final frame, James Madison came out quick firing on all cylinders grabbing a 3-9 lead. The Lady Mocs battled back 9-13 with junior Bailee Chastain on the service line. The Signal Mountain, Tenn., native put all of her serves in play as Chattanooga rattled off the next six points in succession coming away with a victory. COURTNEY CONTINUES CONSISTENT PLAY Junior middle blocker Courtney Barnes has been a force for the Lady Mocs at the net over the past two seasons. In the opening tournament, Barnes continued where she left off registering 35 kills, a.419 hitting percentage and 10 total blocks. These numbers earned her a spot on the Comfort Inn & Suites Volleyball Challenge All-Tournament Team. THE SURPRISE OF THE TOURNAMENT Freshman Heather Parman saw her first action of the season against Morehead State in the second game of the Comfort Inn and Suites Volleyball Challenge recording two kills. The final game against James Madison is where Parman shined for the Lady Mocs posting a double-double with 21 kills and 12 digs in a thrilling five-set victory. Her performance was enough to earn an all-tournament selection. FOLLOWING A LEGEND In the first match of the season, freshman libero Paula Passmore continued where former Lady Moc and NCAA record holder Laura Newberry left off with a 30 dig performance against East Tennessee State. The Merritt Island, Fla., native recorded a match-high 33 digs in a 3-1 victory for UTC. Passmore s digs per set average is at 5.08 after the first three matches and dug up 61 balls.
