5 Honors For Lange Since joining the Northwestern volleyball program in 2000, senior middle blocker has earned many awards for her exceptional play. This year appears to be no different, as she has already been named Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week and Big Ten Co-Player of the Week. She also was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team for a third consecutive season. Lange earned all-tournament honors at the Georgia Tech Courtyard by Marriott and Wildcat Classics. She was named MVP of the Orange and Green Challenge and the Chicago Challenge. The All-America and Big Ten Player of the Year candidate earned All-Big Ten and AVCA All-Mideast Region honors to cap off a successful 2002 season. During her career, she has also been named to the All-Big Ten team twice, the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, the Academic All-Big Ten team twice, and five all tournament teams. National Recognition For Lange was named Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week, following an exceptional performance at the Chicago Challenge on Sept. 5 & 6. Lange earned MVP honors after the Wildcats swept Loyola-Chicago, Ole Miss and Illinois-Chicago. The All-America candidate hit.529 over the three-match span, including a.652 effort against host UIC. She recorded 48 kills (5.33 per game) over the course of the weekend.the preseason All-Big Ten selection also added 11 blocks, nine digs and an assist to the Northwestern effort. Lange, who is among the Big Ten conference leaders in hitting percentage, kills per game and blocks per game, was also named the Big Ten Co-Player of the Week for her efforts. Stiff Competition Northwestern will face one of the nation s most challenging schedules in 2003, taking on 12 teams that advanced to the 2002 NCAA Tournament and 10 matches against teams ranked in the USA Today/AVCA poll. NU kicked off the season against one of those teams on Aug. 29, fifth-ranked Georgia Tech. This past weekend, the Cats knocked off NCAA Tournament participants George Mason and Miami (Fla.) at the Orange and Green Challenge in Miami. Northwestern faced its toughest competition at its own Wildcat Classic, as the Cats fell to No. 3 Florida and defeated national-power North Carolina. A record-tying eight teams from the Big Ten (Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State and Wisconsin) made an appearance in the NCAA tournament in With this being the case, it should be expected that the conference will be as competitive as ever before. Wildcats Picked Eighth In Big Ten Northwestern s volleyball program, despite making an NCAA appearance in 2002, was picked to finish eighth in the conference in the preseason poll released by the Big Ten office on August 1. Ranked ahead of NU were Minnesota, Penn State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio State and Michigan. Illinois, Iowa and Purdue rounded out the poll. Conference Honors Two Northwestern players have been named Big Ten Player of the Week during the 2003 season.this marks the first time since the 1984 season, that two Wildcats earned the honor in consecutive weeks. and were honored by the conference after strong performances at the first two tournaments Northwestern took part in. Both seniors recorded career-high hitting percentages prior to earning the award. Academic All-Big Ten The Northwestern athletics staff is proud of the accomplishments of its athletes on the court, and equally as proud of their accomplishments in the classroom. In 2002, nine members of the Wildcat volleyball team were named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team. Those players were Sarah Ballog,, Jill Fantozzi,,, Cassie McKnight, Kelli Meyer, Lindsay Pavlik and Drew Robertson. The 2003 Wildcat Captains The captains for the 2003 season are and Drew Robertson. These teammates, while taking different roles on the court, will bring unmatched leadership to the Wildcat program. Robertson, who has been the starter at setter since joining the Wildcats in 2001, is considered an All-Big Ten candidate in The team relies on Robertson to run the offense to near perfection on the court. Knavel enters the season under different circumstances. After playing behind Robertson at the setter position in 2002, she moved to the defensive specialist position this season. Diggin The Defense After spending last season at the setter position behind Drew Robertson, senior made a move to defense.the Elm Grove, Wis. native is a starting libero for the Wildcats this season and is producing some outstanding numbers at that position. In the first 20 matches of the season, Knavel recorded 134 digs (2.00 per game). She dug a season-high 15 balls against Alabama in the second match of the season. 5

Wildcats Welcome Alumni Home The 2003 season marks the 20th anniversary of Northwestern s first Big Ten Championship. In 1983, a special group of women took to the court and helped create a name for Northwestern volleyball at the University, in the Big Ten Conference and around the nation. The 1983 championship match pitted the Boilermakers of Purdue against the Wildcats. Entering the Big Ten title match, Purdue had won 42 conference matches in a row. Seven of those 42 wins came against the Wildcats. In the Big Ten championship, the Wildcats clawed their way back into the match after falling behind 2-0. The Boilermakers won the first two games by scores of 15-8 and Northwestern made twice as many hitting errors as kills in the second game and the prospect of rallying to win the next three seemed remote. But in game three, the Wildcats found a spark and kept their hopes alive by winning In the next game, the Cats did it again, winning With the match now tied 2-2, the Northwestern faithful came alive. With its 1,004 fans and momentum behind them, Northwestern stepped out onto the court with optimism and sensed a major comeback victory. The Boilermakers had other ideas, however, jumping out to a quick 9-3 lead. But once again, NU came back, reeling off seven straight points for a 10-9 advantage. The teams alternated four points before the Wildcats scored two straight for a edge. Purdue was able to side-out and earn one more point to pull within one at Northwestern won the match, though, as Pattijean McCahill and Liz Douglass stuffed a ball at the net, giving the Wildcats their first Big Ten crown. The 1983 Big Ten Champions are being honored before and after the NU-Minnesota match on November 8. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Welcome home Wildcats! 6
