COLLEGE ORIENTATION Catawba officials want to do everything they can to help new students succeed, and that means more than making good grades. It means adjusting well. It means learning to live and work with others in an environment that is new. To ease the transition to college life, Catawba offers an orientation session before the opening of the fall term for all first-time freshmen and transfer students. One of the primary strengths of the program is that students have contact with an advisor from the first day they arrive on campus. And that relationship continues in small, twiceweekly classes during the entire first semester. SOUTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE The South Atlantic Conference is a group of nine church-related colleges of similar size and athletic philosophy. As an all-sports conference, the league has grown into one of the premier small-college athletic conference in the nation. The year was extremely special in that the conference became fully affiliated with the NCAA Division II and is now eligible for national championships opportunities in all of its 14 sponsored sports. NCAA DIVISION II The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the organization through which the nation s colleges and universities speak and act on athletic matters at the national level. It is a voluntary association of more than 1,000 institutions, conferences, organizations and individuals devoted to the sound administration of intercollegiate athletics.

15 This is Catawba College SETTING Catawba College students will tell you they wouldn t trade our campus or its location for any other. You won t either. Catawba is located on 210 wooded acres in historic Salisbury, North Carolina. Comfortable and upbeat, our campus is ideal for interaction, involvement, and the attainment of knowledge. And our location provides countless possibilities for exploration. You ll notice a hint of the past and a glimpse of the future in the design of our 27 campus buildings. Surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds, the facilities offer a special blend of the traditional and contemporary. Two buildings constructed eight years ago are immediate eye-catchers. They are Cannon Student Center, which promises to be a special gathering place for students and faculty alike, and Ralph W. Ketner Hall, which houses the Ketner School of Business and Catawba s Division of Education Services. Other key buildings include the landmark, 70-year-old Hedrick Administration Building, Omwake-Dearborn Chapel, Corriher-Linn-Black Library, Robertson College-Community Center, Shuford Science Building and Abernethy Physical Education Center. Students live in seven residence halls Stanback, Barger- Zartman and Hollifield halls for women, and Abernethy, Pine Knot and Salisbury-Rowan halls for men. Woodson Hall houses both men and women. Salisbury is situated just off of Interstate 85, a major northsouth artery that gives convenient access to the entertainment, recreational and cultural activities of Charlotte, Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Students sometimes pack up on weekends and head up to the Blue Ridge Mountains for hiking or skiing, or to the Carolina coast to enjoy the sun, sand and surf of the Atlantic Ocean. CAMPUS LIFE The Catawba campus is a special place, with a distinct sense of warmth. That warmth comes from the embrace of Salisbury, a friendly Southern town which has always taken great interest in the college and its students. The campus also has the influence of 144 years of traditional values such as responsibility, involvement and caring for others. There is a wealth of organizations all in need of extra man-and-womanpower to complete a full agenda of activities. Take your pick of service, honorary and scholastic clubs, publications, musical and theatre arts groups with on-stage and backstage assignments, religious activities, and both intercollegiate and intramural athletics. Plus, there s Cannon Student Center, hub of campus student life with a great lounge, well-stocked bookstore, Career Center offices, dining hall and post office. The center also hosts entertainment events through its student-run Wigwam Productions, featuring acts from the best comedy and variety clubs on the college entertainment circuit. (In fact, Catawba won national recognition as Campus of the Year, 1993 for its entertainment bookings!) In addition, we have our local productions, like Talk Show, and those crazy airband contests. And for your burger and pizza pleasure, there s McCorkle s, Catawba s snack bar and all-around hangout. The Catawba campus really is a busy place as busy as you want it to be. Remember that an active and involved student life usually leads to a highly satisfying and enjoyable college experience, and that s what all of us at Catawba want you to have. It s all part of what makes Catawba a wonderful place to spend your college years. I m glad I chose Catawba. It s a family and that s why I like it. I think the best school for you is the school where you feel comfortable. For me, it s a smaller school where, when I see somebody walking down the hall or across the campus, I can call them by name. I m not just another one of thousands of people. That makes me feel good. It s a better learning environment, and that s a very big plus. Margaret Cleaves, Charlotte, NC
