10 TOP TIPS DATA COLLECTION Think of potential outputs BEFORE data collection. How will the data be stored, analysed and interpreted? Use Excel/SPSS Store data Multiple comparisons Collect accurate raw data where possible (e.g. age rather than age range). Keep a record of what you re doing.

11 TOP TIPS ORGANISATION Identify a target journal FIRST and write the paper FOR that journal. Pick the most appropriate journal for the paper.

13 TOP TIPS ORGANISATION Identify a target journal FIRST and write the paper FOR that journal. Pick the most appropriate journal for the paper. Ask for advice. Read the author guidance thoroughly. Identify 1 person to a take lead in writing the paper. Ask for local peer-review

14 TOP TIPS WRITING View your poster as your pre-paper Write according to the journal style. Formatting Word count Referencing Use citation manager software (e.g. EndNote). Clarify order of authors names early on.

15 TOP TIPS SUBMISSION Often online. Can take a long time hours to days! Often have to upload documents, tables and figures as separate files. Check resolution of files needed. Worth registering for an account early on and checking out submission requirements. Find out what author declarations need to be signed paper or electronic?

16 PLANNING OUTCOME Decisions can take a long time Palliative Medicine = average of 10 weeks BMJ Spcare = average 7 weeks Don t be disheartened 70% of articles are rejected Keep going! Peer review Generally helpful. Don t need to agree with everything. Draw a table showing how you respond to ALL their comments. If you do this it will generally be accepted eventually.
