2 The first traffic signas in Helsinki On Friday 5th of October 1951 traffic lights were lit for the first time in Aleksanterinkatu and Mikonkatu junction. A lot of audience was at present. One signal mast had been erected at each street corner. Four police officers were posted to monitor traffic, especially to prevent pedestrians even during quieter periods to walk against the red light. Lights changed automatically when some metallic object as a car moved on the street. Even an iron horse shoe was enough to trigger an electric detection.
