2 After the success of our autumn Trail Festivals, we wanted to give you a springtime opportunity to enjoy some of the highlights of the Tamar Valley. This mini trail festival brings together more than 25 events across the area, including canoeing and archery; nightvision trails and off-road cycling; historic hedgerows and guided walks; a treasure trail and ancient churches; spring crafts, watercolours, and more..

6 Tamar Valley Centre Did you know the Tamar Valley Centre is available to hire? The Tamar Valley Centre at Drakewalls is a gateway for visitors to the Tamar Valley AONB area, and a resource for the community. It s also the home of the AONB team, Calstock Parish Archive Trust and Calstock Parish Council. Meeting room 4 hour session from 9am-1pm or 1pm-5pm 20 per session; 10 per hour in the evening. Downstairs Space 4 hour session from 9am-1pm or 1pm-5pm 25 per session; per hour in the evening. Exhibitions are charged on a commission basis. Call Becki on or visit for more information!

7 SATURDAY 16 APRIL Nordic Walking on the Tamar Trails Meet at Scrub Tor Carpark, SX414743, at 2:30pm. Adults 10 / Children 8 Come along and try Nordic Walking; a fantastic way to get fit in the great outdoors! Learn something new and enjoy this instructor-led walk along the Wheal Maria trail. The Learn to Nordic Walk session, includes a 5km walk that takes two hours. Wear flexible soled shoes, like trainers, comfortable clothing and waterproofs. 8 SATURDAY 16 APRIL A Walk to Cadsonbury Meet at Cotehele Quay at 9:45am. 6 per adult, 3 per child (includes a 3 per adult or 1.50 per child National Trust voucher) Catch the minibus to Callington to walk to Cadsonbury, enjoy 360 degree views from the hillfort and return to Callington. Approximately 6 miles. Booking essential. Call Dogs by prior arrangement only. Woodland Management Meet at Cotehele Quay at 11am. 6 per adult, 3 per child (includes a 3 per adult or 1.50 per child National Trust voucher) A walk led by Joe Lawrence that looks at how the woodlands are managed on the Cotehele Estate. 9 Off-roading on the Tamar Trails Meet at Bedford Sawmills car park at 10:30am for an 11am ride. 5 per person. Join us for some off-road riding around the Tamar Trails. We ll ride from Bedford Sawmills to Maddacleave and back for lunch, before doing a more challenging cycling route around Devon Great Consols. Participants must have an off-road suitable bike in good working order, and a suitable helmet. Bicycles will be available to hire. Please bring a packed lunch. Booking essential; call the AONB Office on or bookings@tamarvalley.org.uk. Suitable for over 12s, but parental permission will be sought for under 18s. Pay and display carpark, 2 per day.

10 SATURDAY 16 APRIL Reading Ancient Churches Meet at the Tamar Valley Centre at 09:30am. FREE. Join historic buildings expert Eric Berry to visit three beautiful churches in the area and learn about their history, how to identify their age and how to read their architecture. Please bring a packed lunch. Minibus transport will be provided, and the day will finish after 4pm. 11 Guided Canoe Trip on the Tamar Meet at Cotehele Quay at 4pm. Adults 25 / Children 21. Under 5s go free. A guided canoe trip exploring the River Tamar from Cotehele Quay. We ll also stop off for an evening picnic on the banks of the river. All equipment is supplied and it s ideal for the whole family! Please allow 3 hours for the canoe journey, including picnic. 13 Discovery Trail Revamp! Creatures of the Night Capeltor, SX414740, 7:30pm. 5 per person. Join us to hunt for beasties in the night using special nightvision equipment; owls, foxes, otters, bats and more! Please bring a torch, sturdy shoes, and warm clothes! 14 SUNDAY 17 APRIL Sheep Day Buckland Abbey, 10:30am - 5:30pm per adult / 2.30 per child; National Trust members FREE. A day of woolly fun for all the family. Live sheep and lambs, stands, demonstrations and family fun in the 13th Century Great Barn. 18 SUNDAY 17 APRIL Walking the Lifton Link Meet opposite the Lifton Hall Hotel, SX387851, at 1:30pm. 5 per adult / 3 per child including tea and return transport. A guided walk along part of the new promoted trail from Lifton to Milton Abbot. A delightful 5 mile walk in unpoilt countryside with far reaching views into the Tamar Valley and beyond, with a stop at Kelly House for tea and cake. Walk will last approximately 3.5 hours including the tea stop. Return trip by minibus. Bring sturdy shoes and suitable clothing. Walk is steep in some sections. 19 Bell the Bal Maidens Treasure Trail Start the treasure trail between 2pm and 3:30pm from Kit Hill Summit, SX per child Follow the clues and solve the puzzles along the trail to claim your prize. Small prize and certificate for all the children who complete the trail. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Aimed at under 13 s with guidance from an adult. 21 Explore the Discovery Trail to Maristow Walled Garden Tamerton Foliot, 10:30am Bere Ferrers, 11am FREE including lunch Two guided nature walks along each back of the beautiful River tavy followed by a free lunch and guided tour at the fascinating historic garden restoration project, Maristow Walled Garden. For walk one from Tamerton Foliot meet at the Green opposite the bus stop at SX Regular number 42 bus from Plymouth. For walk two from Bere Ferrers meet at the station, from the 10:25 train from Gunnislake. Booking essential, spaces are limited. Walk takes 2 hours. Bring sturdy shoes and suitable clothes for the weather. Walks are steep in one section and are muddy after rain. Free soup, a roll and drinks provided. 22 SUNDAY 17 APRIL Guided Canoe trip plus BBQ Meet at Rumleigh Quay at 3pm. 35 per adult / 31 per child including BBQ. A guided canoe trip exploring the River Tamar from Weir Quay to Rumleigh Quay. We will be on the water for around 2 hours, aiming to arrive at Rumleigh for the BBQ at 6pm. All equipment is supplied, ideal for the whole family and no experience is required at all. 23 Understanding Historic Buildings Meet at Fursdon Farm, SX414669, at 10am. FREE. A chance to join historic buildings expert Eric Berry for an informative and fun day out investigating a listed farmstead, looking for clues and picking up tips on how to date the architecture. Please bring a packed lunch, and if possible a pen, clipboard and paper for notes! 24 MONDAY 18 APRIL Castles and Creeks on the Lynher Meet at St Stephen s Church, Saltash, SX416583, at 10:30am. A longer Health Walk from St Stephen s in Saltash through Forder and as far as the entrance to Ince Castle and back past Trematon Castle. Inspiring views in an historic landscape. Can use the number 1 bus from Plymouth. The walk will take up to 3 hours but will have a shorter option for those with less time. Bring sturdy shoes and suitable clothes for the weather. Walk is steep in some sections and can be muddy after rain. There are a couple of stiles. Bring lunch/snack and a drink. For more information call Well behaved dogs on a lead are welcome.

25 A Priest s Confessional Trail Meet at Bere Alston Station at 11:20am. FREE. Clive Charlton will be leading a walk along the northern section of the hotly debated Medieval priest s confessional trail! Learn about the history of Bere Alston and the Bere peninsula along the way, including the Medieval silver mines. Approximately 5-6 miles, dependent on weather! Bring a packed lunch, sturdy shoes and sensible clothing. There are a few hills, but there s no rush and all are welcome. 26 MONDAY 18 APRIL Historic Hedgerows Meet outside Cotehele House reception at 10am. FREE. Join the AONB team to investigate the age of some of the hedges at the Cotehele Estate. We will look at how to estimate the age of hedges all over the Valley by studying the hedges themselves and using historic maps and information. Bring sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing. 27 Wild Woodland Food Meet at Cotehele Quay at 10am. 5 per person. Claire Roper will be leading a walk in the woodland at Cotehele, showcasing some of the wild woodland food to be found in spring time. Bring sturdy footwear and suitable outdoor clothing. 28 TUESDAY 19 APRIL Have a Go at Archery! Meet at Tree Surfers at Bedford Sawmills. 5 per person for a half hour session. An introduction to archery in our beautiful woodland range! This half hour session is with an instructor. All equipment is supplied, it is ideal for the whole family and no experience is required at all! 29 Watercolour Painting - Garden House Views The Garden House, Buckland Monachorum. 10:30am - 4pm. 29 to include morning and afternoon coffee/ tea. Led by local artist Richard Mabey and suitable for those with a little experience of watercolours. Beginner classes are also available. Please bring a picnic lunch, or tearoom facilities are available. Booking is essential, and equipment details will be given on booking. Please call or visit

30 TUESDAY 19 APRIL Flora and Fauna at the Port Eliot Gardens Meet outside Port Eliot House at 3pm. 4 per adult, and under 16s FREE. A guided walk around Port Eliot s woodland garden. A beautiful spring garden with a fantastic display of plants. The walk will take approximately 1 hour, mostly along established paths. Dogs allowed if kept on a lead. Call or visit

31 ART TRAIL - 26th March to 2nd May All around Tavistock town centre and surrounding area. Times of opening may vary. Self-guided walks around venues in Tavistock, discovering a variety of artworks in different styles and media, all by West Country artists.
