1 WAKS IN YOUR AREA FERUARY - MAY 2014
2 Welcome to our Spring walks programme. Our walks are ideal for people who want to improve their general health and wellbeing and are great for people of all ages to take up walking in a safe and sociable atmosphere. Just remember to wear sturdy footwear and bring a drink with you. Did you know walking can: Make you feel good Keep your heart strong Give you more energy Reduce high blood pressure Help to manage your weight Help to reduce stress, anxiety and depression Help you sleep better Why walk? It s a chance to meet people and make new friends Almost anyone can do it You can do it anywhere, anytime You don t need any equipment - just comfortable walking shoes There s very little risk of injury and it doesn t hurt! You can start slowly and build up gradually It's FREE! How much walking should I do? Just 30 minutes a day of moderate activity such as brisk walking is all it takes to gain a health benefit. The more you do, the more health gains you can make. You may need to build up your level of activity gradually and for most inactive people gentle strolling is a good start point. How will I feel? You may feel a little out of breath - this is fine as long as you are able to hold a conversation without gasping for air You may feel warmer - this is due to increased blood flow around the body You may feel a little aching in your muscles - this is due to your body undertaking increased activity Remember DO NOT overdo it And remember All our walks are free of charge Please come prepared with suitable footwear and clothing As a courtesy to other walkers, dogs are only allowed on non-extendable leads To encourage a healthy environment, please refrain from smoking on any of our walks All new walkers need to arrive minutes before the walk commences Please bring a drink Walks may be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, so please ring the telephone number listed to make sure it is taking place The bus information within this leaflet is correct at time of going to print. Please contact GMPTE on or visit for the latest information. 2
