1 WWA SUPRA WAKEBOARD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 World Wakeboard Association President, Shannon Starling, has called Portugal the European Florida because it resembles the fantastic conditions for the wakeboard practicing. For the first time the Wakeboard top event is performed outside the United States and will take place in Portugal, at Castelo do Bode Lake in September. 2 The 2015 National Wakeboard and Wakeskate Championship took place in June 27 and 28 at Castelo do Bode Lake. The Nautical Center of Zêzere (CNZ) at Trízio (Sertã) has received once more the national contest of these sports, which were recently integrated on the Portuguese Powerboating Federation The national contest had the Approval of the Portuguese Powerboating Federation and participants could only register if they were federated (with a 2015 sport license and presenting the sports insurance by the Sports Confederation). Registrations were made by using an online form (60 - Open category, 40 - Remaining categories) or at the event on Saturday, June 27, between (with an additional amount of 10 ). The contest was made by boat and the prize- money para Men s Open was The contest Categories were: Children (up to 9 years); Junior Boys and Junior Girls (10 to 14 years); Junior Men and Junior Women (15 to 18 years), Men s Open and Women s Open (no age restriction); Men s Masters and Women s Masters (from 30 years on); Men s Veterans and Women s Veterans (from 40 years on); Initiated Category (19 to 29 years). Each Rider can only compete in one category. Each Rider category is exclusively defined by their age, except for Open categories. The trail will have two obstacles: one SLIDER and one BOX. The category duration depends on the number of registrations, but each athlete run takes an average of six minutes between exit the dock and ending the contest. The contest has three Judges on the boat and they assesse on three criteria and each of the three Judges will score until a maximum of 100 points to each Rider, based on overall assessment of the performed routine. Each Heat will be judged independently from the others, even if they are in the same round. a) Execution points Reflects the level of perfection of each trick. b) Intensity points Reflects the size and technical trick difficulty. c) Composition points - Reflects the overall run in terms of ability to perform a variety of tricks in a fluid and creative sequence. The Lake has extraordinary conditions for wakeboard practicing, which turns this sport into an economic and touristic potential. 4 ABOUT THE WAKEBOARD PORTUGAL PROJECT The municipalities of Abrantes, Ferreira do Zêzere, Mação, Sertã and Vila de Rei, the Tourism of Center and the Portuguese Association of Wakeboard and Wakeskate (APWW) in partnership with EIPWU (7 Wonders projects organizers) joined on the promotion of the Central Region of Portugal through Wakeboard, a sport that is growing worldwide and has more practitioners than Surf in the US. The strategic plan for this project includes the realization of the top Wakeboard event, the WWA Supra Wakeboard World Championships next September, the creation of a resort with cable parks at Castelo do Bode Lake and the nationals on this region. This is a pioneering vision over the Wakeboard potential in our country. It is a strategic project to position Portugal as an European cluster of the sport and to promote Castelo do Bode Lake as a place of excellence for wakeboarding. ABOUT WAKEBOARD For Wakeboarding you need: Calm waters lakes, lagoons, dams A Board wakeboard, similar to snowboard A Boat or a cable system, to pull the athlete Wakeboard figures: Started 25 years ago in the US; Water sports with higher US growth rate (beats surfing) practicing in the US; practicing in Europe; 450 Cable Parks worldwide; 250 Cable Parks in Europe; practicing (average) around each cable park; World Wakeboard Association represents athletes in 35 affiliated countries Wakeboard has democratized and it became a sport of masses by installing cable parks, real theme parks that make it more accessible, reducing costs for the people practicing as well as the ecological footprint (the cable systems have low power consumption, powered by electricity). Cable parks become leisure places of excellence, with parallel activities and a consequent increase on the touristic demand, hotel and restaurant. 2
