This year we also enter the final season of our National Game Strategy delivery and look to continue to deliver a high standard of football development across the county. The Devon County FA has seen a number of staff changes over the past four months. Lee Rider has moved to work for The FA and Mark Young has moved to Wiltshire FA to become their County Development Manager. Chris French has come in to become the County Development Manager for the County, while Dai Carpenter will now be our Senior Development Officer. We have welcomed to the Development Team Howard Shaddick, who will be delivering the Just Play programme, Ashley Harris, our new Disability Officer, and Apprentice Matthew Eddy. With the support of our leagues, clubs, coaches and volunteers we have had another successful year in Devon: Over 80% of youth football is played in Charter Standard Clubs and over 50% of all adult and youth football is played in Charter Standard Leagues We continue to offer a wide range of courses with around 75% of youth teams now having a qualified coach Our Girls Centre of Excellence retained their license with one player progressing into the England under-15 and under-17 sides The Just Play Programme has begun with the focus on raising participation in players aged 16 and over in Plymouth and Torbay The Tesco Skills Programme was launched in Devon with three coaches working across the county in Primary Schools and FA Tesco Skills Centres Referee numbers have remained strong and we are close to a full coverage of referees for 11v11 leagues across the county 73% of respondents to our quarterly questionnaire believe that RESPECT has improved their football experience and 77% of respondents to the same questionnaire believe we are doing a good job of developing football in Devon We have seen circa 250k invested into facilities and club development via the Football Foundation with many more projects being considered The Football Development Team at Devon County FA would like to wish you every success for Chris French County Development Manager, Devon FA

3 FA Learning Coaching Provision and Pathways The purpose of this diagram is to graphically represent the major coaching pathways that a learner can follow on his/her formal learning journey in football. Whilst the arrows indicate an idea of the most likely routes through the qualifications, they are by no means exhaustive and do not represent every possible journey a learner can take. There is no one pathway which The FA can recommend, as the correct learning journey for each individual is specific to their context, history, knowledge and understanding. 4 Level 1 Award in Coaching Football This course provides an introduction to the organisation and delivery of safe and enjoyable coaching sessions for players. The course will introduce practical drills to develop players technical skills such as shooting, turning with the ball and heading. It is ideally suited to those working with groups of young players. Course Aims & Objectives To provide learners with an introduction to offering the principles/practice of safe, ethical and effective management and coaching of football to adults and young people, as an assistant normally under the supervision of a Level 2 qualified coach. This certificate offers an opportunity for aspiring football coaches to be supported in developing their knowledge of how to effectively coach a local club or school team. Course Content Theory The course will introduce some key aspects in the following: Player and Coach development The FA s Respect Programme Laws of the Game An introduction to the FA s Long Term Player Development Model An introduction to Football for All. The course will also provide (as separately organised workshops) the following for candidates: FA Emergency Aid FA Safeguarding Children in Football. Practical Practical elements of the course will provide an introduction to: Warm up and cool down game related activities Passing and control Turning with the ball Dribbling Shooting Heading Goalkeeping Individual Attacking Individual Defending Small sided games. Practical Involvement Candidates will be encouraged to participate practically to maximise their opportunities for learning (however inability to participate will not prevent successful completion of the award). Course Pre-requisites Prior to certification, candidates are required to: Be at least 16 years of age Hold as a minimum a current FA Emergency Aid Qualification Have attended The FA Safeguarding Children Workshop (candidates under the age of 18 years are eligible to complete The FA Child Protection Distance Learning Module Safeguarding Children in Football A Guide as an alternative to the workshop). The above pre-requisites, for those who do not already hold the appropriate evidence, will normally be provided by recognised centres as part of the learning programme. 4 Devon FA

5 Successful Completion All pre-requisites are met along with completion of all workbook tasks. A 20 minute practical delivery assessment is required to complete and pass the course. 6 Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football Building on the initial skills learnt in the Level 1 Award in Coaching Football, this course provides a deeper understanding of coaching. The course introduces new themes such as looking at different coaching styles, preparing for accidents and emergencies and understanding players nutritional needs. Course Aims & Objectives To provide candidates who have an ongoing involvement with sport with an introduction to the processes and principles of coaching football to adults and children. The Certificate offers an opportunity for potential football coaches to be supported in developing the knowledge of how to effectively plan, conduct and evaluate football coaching sessions. It will also introduce the candidates to an appreciation of the principles of the game, both attacking and defending, and how to utilise this knowledge for invasion games. Course Content Theory The course will introduce a number of key aspects related to the role of a football coach in working with youth players. These are delivered via home based study tasks and Tutor delivered workshops. The course will introduce some key aspects in the following: The roles, skills and qualities of a football coach Developing session plans and associated information for planning Awareness of safe and organised activities Preparation for potential accidents, illnesses and emergencies A consideration of coaching styles Coaching session evaluation and self-reflection Nutritional needs of football players Fitness components related to football The planning of progressive coaching sessions. Practical The practical elements of the course will provide the following: The principles of attacking to include creating and exploiting space Passing Support Play Ball Control Dribbling Running with the ball Turning Goalkeeping Finishing Heading The principles of defending to include denying and restricting space Defensive play when organised and outnumbered. In addition candidates will have the opportunity to undertake two observed practical coaching sessions with their Tutor and receive feedback based on selected criteria. This will form the basis of an opportunity to deliver 12 hours of coaching in the candidate s work place to apply the experience gained from the course of training. Practical Involvement Candidates will be encouraged to participate practically to maximise their opportunities for learning (however inability to participate will not prevent successful completion of the award). 6 Devon FA

For those with proven experience and knowledge in this area, Accreditation of Prior Learning (ALP) may be offered. Successful Completion All pre-requisites are met along with completion of all workbook tasks. Practical delivery of a 35 minute practical coaching activity that will be progressed on a specific theme relating to the course syllabus. Candidates can be reassessed within a 24 month period from registration. 8 UEFA B Licence The UEFA B Licence qualification provides an exciting opportunity for candidates to advance their practical team coaching skills. On successful completion of the Certificate, candidates are qualified to coach the skills and techniques of football to both adults and children. Each candidate is fully supported in developing his/ her knowledge and skills during the qualification. Resources Candidate Pack (CP); Handbook (HB); Unit summary and task sheets; Course programme. Course of Learning Will be conducted by the course tutor (internal assessor). Practical The practical sessions will cover: Functional practices; Phases of Play; Small sided games (9 v 9). You will play in the sessions and also have the opportunity to coach your colleagues. This will allow the course tutor to feed back to individuals and the group to enable you to identify strengths and weaknesses and then design personal action plans. The FA Safeguarding Children in Football Workshop Unless otherwise included in the course, you must provide evidence of attending this course (must be The FA s course). The FA Emergency Aid Workshop Unless otherwise included in the course, you must provide evidence of attending this course and this can be The FA s course, St. John s Ambulance or Red Cross. Distance Learning You will be required to do the following: Complete all the course tasks and formulate your CP for assessment; Conduct a minimum of 16 hours of verified coaching, supported by session s plans and evaluations; Work to your action plan as discussed with your course tutor. Support Sessions In between the course of learning and the final assessment you will need to attend support sessions which will focus on practical and theory issues in order to assist you in preparation for your final assessment. You will receive your final assessment topics and you will then meet with the assessor to discuss your pack and any questions you have with regards to your topics. Final Assessment You will need to submit your completed CP for assessment three weeks prior to the assessment date. The tutor will assess the pack (external assessor). Practical You will be required to attend a minimum of two full days where you will need to plan and deliver: A functional practice of phase of play; A small sided game (9 v 9). 8 Devon FA

9 Theory/Oral Interview Once all coaching sessions have been completed, candidates will have personal interviews with the external assessor who will inform you of the final decision and discuss your action plan to develop. 10 Level 1 Goalkeeping Coaching Award Learn how to develop and improve your goalkeepers techniques and plan and prepare progressive technical practices. Course Aims & Objectives On completion of the course the competent coach will be able to: Coach basic individual techniques. Understand the coaching process and how to develop and improve the Goalkeepers technique. Plan and prepare progressive technical practices. Maintain the health and safety of the players and other coaches. Course Content The practical elements of the course will provide candidates with the following elements: Specific goalkeeping warm ups and cool downs Coaching basic individual techniques including footwork, the set position, handling techniques, diving saves (catching/deflecting/parrying), dealing 1v1 situations and crosses How to develop and improve technique Planning and preparing technical practices Maintaining the health and safety of the players and other coaches Maintaining high standards of conduct Consolidation of the key technical aspects of goalkeeping together with the Long Term Player Development (LTPD) model. Practical Involvement Candidates are encouraged to participate practical to maximise their opportunities for learning (however inability to participate will not prevent successful completion of the award). Course Pre-requisites Prior to certification, candidates are required to: Be at least 16 years of age Hold as a minimum a current FA Emergency Aid Qualification Have attended The FA Safeguarding Children in Football Workshop. 11 Level 2 Goalkeeping Coaching Certificate The FA Goalkeeping Coaching Certificate will provide candidates with the further practical knowledge and ability to organise and develop key aspects related to goalkeeping skills and techniques. It will include clear guidance on the preparation and planning required to progress both skill and technical practices in a safe and enjoyable environment. The course is available to all Goalkeeping coaches who are holders of the Level 2 CCF, working with a team who wish to develop their coaching ability of goalkeepers at junior, youth or non-league levels. Course Format The practical elements of the course will provide candidates with the following elements: Specific goalkeeping warm ups and cool downs Coaching basic individual goalkeeping techniques and skills including footwork, general handling techniques, shot stopping, dealing with crosses, and goalkeeper distribution and communication Understanding how to develop and improve goalkeeping skills/techniques Planning and preparing progressive skill / technical practices Maintaining the health and safety of the players and other coaches. 12 The FA Youth Award Module 1: Developing the Environment The first module presents a child-centred approach to the development of young players. The award recognises the important role the coach can have upon levels of motivation and self-esteem and gives practical advice to help sessions become an effective environment for learning. Suitable for coaches at all levels, this new look at coaching will create coaches who have an understanding of children and young players as well as football. Course Aims & Objectives To provide candidates who have an ongoing involvement in coaching young football players with an opportunity to improve their knowledge and confidence in coaching children in the 5-11 year group. Course Content Theory The course will introduce some key aspects in the following: The importance of the social corner and how it links with the 4 corners. How players learn Motivation Self-Esteem Managing Mistakes Managing Physical, Technical, Social and Psychological Difference Planning Activity. Practical The course will provide a practical introduction to: Physical corner FUNdamental warm-ups Practical activities and games. 13 The FA Youth Award Module 2: Developing the Practice Building on the knowledge learnt in Module 1, this course provides practical sessions and workshops that help coaches to develop practices appropriate for the age, maturity, ability and experience levels of their players. Coaches will be expected to plan, deliver and evaluate their own, and other coaches, practices during the course, which is most suited to club coaches of young players of any age. Course Aims & Objectives To provide candidates who have an ongoing involvement in coaching football players with an opportunity to improve their knowledge and confidence in coaching the 5-16 year age group. Course Content Theory Workshops will consider: Age and maturity issues Different types of practice and the advantages and disadvantages of each Unopposed and opposed practice development Dealing with talented players Issues in planning and evaluating. Practical Involvement This is a practical based course. Different types of practices will be demonstrated and delivered and candidates will be expected to evaluate these practices as well as plan, deliver and evaluate their own practices. 14 The FA Youth Award Module 3: Developing the Player Module 3 of The FA Youth Award is designed to support the development of coaches who currently work, or who have a realistic opportunity of working, on a consistent and intensive basis with a group of youth players within the performance or elite levels of the game. Within this module, coaches will be required to demonstrate the ability to analyse performance within the principles of play (attacking or defending) and show an aptitude for the design of practices specific to the needs of individual players within their charge. Such practices may involve consideration of role specific requirements within the match play scenario. 15 Coaching Futsal: A Beginner s Guide It s fun, it s fast, it s Futsal and now you can learn how this super-quick game of football is played. The FA is committed to developing Futsal, the FIFA and UEFA approved format of Small Sided Football. To support the development of the game in England, The FA has devised an introductory six hour coaching course consisting of four hours of practical and two hours of theory tutoring. On completion of the course the candidate should be able to: Understand and appreciate the fundamentals of Futsal; Organise and coach the basic skills and techniques of Futsal; Understand the basic principles of attack and defence of Futsal; Appreciate the Laws of the Game of Futsal; Have an appreciation of the fitness demands of Futsal. Mimimum requirements The course is an open access course. However in order to be certificated candidates must hold one of the existing FA Coaching Awards. Candidates seeking certification for the course should therefore hold or have attended/be booked on the following: An existing FA coaching qualification; FA Safeguarding Children in Football Workshop; FA Emergency Aid Workshop. FA Level 1 Award in Coaching Futsal The FA Coaching Futsal Level 1 course is currently only offered at St George s Park through FA Learning visit to view a list of available course dates. 16 Mentoring Adults This six hour course is aimed at grassroots coaches who wish to further their knowledge and confidence in mentoring to enable them to better support the development of coaching colleagues in a local setting. Course Aims & Objectives This course is designed to support those who wish to develop their mentoring skills, to understand the role of the mentor, to develop the interpersonal skills required to become an effective mentor as well as developing reflection as a learning tool. It supports participants to develop skills in a safe and positive environment. Course Content To understand the role of the mentor and principles of effective mentoring To understand and appreciate the required interpersonal skills of the mentor To explore strategies for mentoring To demonstrate the ability to use core mentoring interpersonal skills (observation, giving accurate feedback, active listening, questioning, critical reflection) To understand mentoring assessment, feedback and goal setting processes To consider the importance of reflection as a tool for learning To explore CPD and reflective Action Planning opportunities for Mentors to consider their future development. 17 Coaching Disabled Footballers This course teaches coaches to apply coaching skills to meet the needs of players with different impairments. The course establishes basic communication skills for coaching disabled footballers, using appropriate terminology. Coaches are also advised on appropriate medical and safety considerations. Course Aims & Objectives The course is designed to give football coaches and teachers ideas and practices for the inclusion of disabled players in football sessions whether in mainstream or impairment specific sessions. Course Content Theory Apply and extend your existing coaching skills and experience to meet the needs of players with a range of impairments Establish basic communication skills for coaching disabled footballers Use appropriate terminology Identify appropriate safety and medical considerations Plan a wide range of coaching sessions for disabled footballers Using the Inclusion Spectrum, plan your coaching sessions to include disabled players or provide alternative appropriate opportunities Understand the player pathways available for disabled players including the appropriate structure for competition. 18 Coaching Wheelchair Football Wheelchair football is an adapted version of the sport played with larger footballs, and this course is designed to give coaches ideas for coaching wheelchair football and guidance on the rules of the sport. The course includes both practical and theory elements, and candidates receive an electronic coaching resource pack from The Wheelchair FA. 19 Coaching Blind Football This is a one day course designed to give coaches ideas on how to train blind footballers. The course is primarily aimed at working with blind players that are new to the game, however many of the practices covered will also be applicable to more experienced blind players. The course includes both theory and practical elements, during which participants will experience playing whilst blindfolded, with everyone taking turns at being both a sighted coach and a blind player. Please note there is a blind and visually impaired football club in Exeter at which participants will subsequently be asked to gain some voluntary experience. By the end of the course participants should: Feel confident in how to guide blind persons Be familiar with a range of adapted equipment for blind football, and the rules of blind football Plan a range of coaching sessions to train a blind footballer from novice to intermediate level. 20 Coaching Deaf Footballers The purpose of the Coaching Deaf Footballers course is to provide coaches with ideas and guidance on how to adapt, where necessary, to include deaf players in regular coaching sessions and match situations at their school or club. By the end of the programme the participant should be able to: Apply and extend their existing coaching skills and experience to meet the needs of deaf playersa Feel confident when coaching deaf footballers Have improved their awareness of deafness and provide better understanding of the needs of deaf footballers Use basic communication skills for coaching deaf footballers Use basic British Sign Language signs appropriate to coaching football sessions Identify appropriate safety and medical considerations; Plan a range of coaching sessions that include deaf footballers Understand how to include deaf footballers in a match situation Understand the player pathways available for deaf footballers including the appropriate structures for competition. 21 British Sign Language for Football This course is delivered over a number of evenings and is designed to give coaches a basic knowledge of and the confidence to use British Sign Language, for when coaching deaf players. The workshop is very interactive, with all participants learning and using basic signing commands relevant to football coaching throughout the day. By the end of the day participants should have an understanding of how to sign in the following areas: The alphabet and names in BSL; Greeting players and introducing yourself and others; Football coaching commands, field positions and other football terminology; Giving details of future training sessions. 22 The FA Licensed Coaches Club The FA coaching pathway is now more varied than ever. Coaches can plot their own path with opportunities to become either a specialist youth or senior coach. 23 Devon FA Twilight Coaches Club Learning actually begins upon completion of your coaching course when you begin implementing new methods/sessions with your players It is important to reinforce the knowledge you pick up and continue to develop as a coach. Football is a constantly changing environment and it is important that coaches adapt to this for the benefit of their players. Devon FA looks to bring together coaches that work in grassroots football with an aim of sharing their knowledge, experiences, best practice and collectively looking to improve the experience for players both young and old. Regardless of whether you have been involved with football for many years, or are looking to get involved, we hope that our regular scheduled networking sessions led by experienced coach educators and highly qualified coaches will challenge you and contribute to your continual learning. Most of our workshops and discussion sessions last between two and three hours and are FREE of charge. They are delivered by experienced coach educators, coaches and other professionals. Topics vary and are aimed at specific target groups but open to all coaches working in our game. Venues change throughout the county to ensure that coaches are able to access regular coaching support whilst travelling minimal distances from their homes. All sessions will be advertised at least two months in advance on twilight-coaches-club and also by , Twitter and Facebook. 25 The FA Welfare Officer Workshop The FA requires all affiliated Clubs to appoint a designated Club Welfare Officer. The CWO is required to have completed an accepted FA CRB enhanced disclosure as part of the affiliation criteria. Club Welfare Officers will promote best practice throughout each club, playing a key role in dealing with poor practice concerns in line with the club or respective league s own disciplinary process. Minimum Requirements All candidates must hold a valid FA Safeguarding Children in Football (formerly The FA Child Protection Best Practice) Workshop certificate and completed an accepted FA CRB enhanced disclosure. 27 The FA Basic Sports First Aid Workshop The FA Basic Sports First Aid course is a foundation sports first aid course aimed at lay first aiders, specifically coaches, teachers, parents and volunteers, who are responsible for the provision of first aid when supporting sports activities. Course Aims & Objectives To provide the student with an understanding of the general duties, responsibilities and treatment principles of first aid. To provide students with the basic knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to recognise and differentiate major from minor injury and the ability to offer basic first aid and injury/illness management and advice to a participant who has sustained illness/injury when engaged in sports activity, or in sports environments. On completion of the course, the student should be able to: Describe the duties, responsibilities, general treatment principles and priorities of emergency care provision Describe the elements of pre-event preparation in relation to emergency care provision Demonstrate an understanding of basic anatomy and physiology in relation to first aid Conduct the on-field assessment (SALTAPS) of a participant and apply principles of infection control Recognise and respond to the signs and symptoms of common injuries Recognise and respond to the signs and symptoms of common illnesses. 28 Refereeing Courses Whether your ambition is to referee at a World Cup Final or your local under 11 s team in their league matches then Devon FA can help you along the way. From local park football all the way up to the FA Cup Final, football needs referees. Devon FA can provide the training, support and experience to help you progress as far as you want to. We have the resources, training and support mechanisms in place to assist you in achieving your goal. Who can become a referee? Anybody over the age of 14 can enrol on a Referee Course. As long as you have a passion for the game and willingness to learn and communicate with those around you then you can become an asset to the Devon FA Refereeing team. All the referees in Devon started out at the same point as you are now, by having an interest and finding out more information. You could be a youngster with ambition to referee on the Premiership or a player who wants to hang up his playing boots and put something back in the game, if so then read on! What do I need to do to become a referee? The first thing you need to do is decide what type of referee you wish to become. Below are details of the courses we run to become referees and what refereeing pathway they will lead you to. Where are the courses? Basic Referee Courses are held in the four main areas of the County, North, South, East and West to try and reach as many potential referees as possible. The specialist referee courses are held in one location dependant on the facility and demand that is needed. When are the courses? Course are run throughout the year and at various locations in the county such as Sandymere, North Devon, Plysmtock College, Elmore Football Club and here at the Devon FA Headquarters in Newton Abbot. 28 Devon FA Full Basic Referee Course These are held throughout the year and throughout Devon and will involve approximately 22 hours of training followed by a test on the Laws of association football and an examination which involves watching a theory DVD. On passing the examinations, you become a Level 9 trainee referee. Following the course you will need to referee 6 11v11 games or 6 9v9 games to obtain qualified status - during this period you will have the services of a mentor, if required, to offer you support through your opening games. It is important to note that you must attend all the dates of the course and you have not passed the course until you have completed your six matches as a referee. 29 Futsal Referee Course Want to referee only Futsal? Then this is the course for you. Futsal is rapidly growing in the UK and is the only form of small sided football that is recognised by FIFA. A two-day course is available to those who are novices to the game and a one-day course for those who have experience as players or managers of the game. An examination is to be passed at the end of the course and following the successful completion of this you will be qualified as a Futsal referee. The cost of this course is 75 and includes: Futsal Laws of the Game Book Course Materials Course delivered by FA Licensed Referee Tutors Safeguarding Children in Football Workshop Whistle Referee notebook including red and yellow cards Associate Membership of the Referees Association Registration to Devon FA as a Futsal Referee. Mini Soccer Referees Course A new course provided by The FA for those who wish to referee in Mini Soccer Matches wither with local youth leagues or with their clubs. This is a guided learning modular course with opportunities to referee during the course. The trained tutors will cover everything about mini soccer including the ethos of mini soccer, your role as an educator and how your role can develop in the game. At the conclusion of Module 5 you will be registered as a Mini Soccer Referee. If you then decide that after refereeing in 5v5 and 7v7 football that you wish to step up and become a full 11v11 referee then there is a six-hour bolt on module to complete to add to your qualification. The cost of this course is 75, but does not include the Safeguarding workshop or a CRB check if needed. 30 The FA Charter Standard Leagues Programme The Charter Standard League programme is a relatively new concept following the quality mark that was established for clubs in the early 2000s. This award assesses a league on its ability to provide a high quality, safe and enjoyable football experience. This is measured in the first instance on a criterion. It is important to highlight though that the needs and benefits for each individual league are unique and as such are taken into consideration. Through support from the Devon County FA, this process will give direction to a league, and ensures all key partners work together to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness in providing football in their local community. How will your league benefit from the programme? In working towards Charter Standard league status, a league is demonstrating its commitment in working towards minimum operating standards and raising standards and addressing poor behaviour in football in their local community. They will do this by encouraging teams to gain the Charter Standard Club status, and be committed to adhering to its challenging criteria. A league will also be demonstrating, through continual analysis, what it is doing well, what areas it can improve upon, and how they achieve these improvements. Finally a league importantly shows a willingness to develop better players and to invest in up skilling its workforce. When registering as working towards Charter Standard League Status your league will receive: Support from County FA staff, to include initial briefing and quarterly support meetings FA guidance resources Networking opportunities One free Enhanced CRB check and three free places (one on each workshop) for Safeguarding, Welfare Officer and Equality workshops. Devon County FA Development Funding to improve highlighted areas. An agreed support package between the Devon County FA and individual league will allow financial support in supporting a league achieving its vision. The league will also be demonstrating that it is committed to the Respect programme and will have procedures in place to improve standards and address poor behaviour in the game. 32 Just Play Mars Just Play is a national programme launched by The FA with the aim of increasing adult (16+) participation by 25,000 players playing at least once a week by July Funding for this programme has been obtained through Sport England, Local Area Funding and The FA. The FA has highlighted this area of football participation as a key focus for improvement. Over the past eight years there has been a large decline in the number of 11 v 11 teams playing affiliated football in the country. This has led to research into why people are leaving our national game. Following the research The FA has employed 27 Mars Just Play Football Development Officers, operating in focus local authorities in each county. Devon FA, in conjunction with Plymouth City Council & Torbay Council, has employed a Just Play Football Officer to work in the Plymouth & Torbay Local Authorities and he will be working with a large number of partners to encourage new and old players to Just Play Football. Since its introduction in 2011, the programme has helped to boost football participation numbers by: Creating 200,000 adult places at Just Play kickabout sessions Opening over 200 Just Play centres nationwide Training over 400 Just Play organisers. The programme opened countywide in Devon in July 2013 and already has seen a large impact into participation and funding, building on the work of the Get into Football programme in Plymouth The programme will introduce and deliver creative ways for local people to get and stay involved in a variety of football activities, including: 16+ year olds turn up and play football sessions Veterans football Small sided football, including Futsal Intra-mural football for further and higher education Flexible football. Already we have seen adult participation growing throughout the season, predominantly through recreational Just Play sessions & small sided leagues have seen growth in the number of teams registering. A network of turn up and play sessions for youth players aged 14 and over have been formed in focus areas of the county, to assist their transition into the adult game. 33 Women s & Girls Football Female Leagues There are two leagues who offer the main bulk of youth football in Devon. These are the Devon Junior and Minor League based in Plymouth and West Devon, and the Devon Girls League based in East, South and Mid Devon. There is also girls provision in the North of the county through the North Devon Youth League. The Devon Women s League offers football for Devon s ladies and includes teams from all over the County. Many of Devon s ladies teams have progressed and play in South West and South Region combination leagues. Girls Centre of Excellence The Devon FA Girls Centre of Excellence is one of only 31 of its kind in the country. Based at the fantastic facilities at Ivybridge Community College, the Centre runs squads at under 11, 13, 15 and 17. Each age group attends training twice a week for a total of four hours. The sessions are delivered by some of the most experienced and highly qualified coaches in female football in the county. The Centre is involved in a comprehensive Saturday fixture programme, competing against the likes of Bristol Academy, Somerset FA and Oxford United. Out-of-region fixtures take place on 4 or 5 occasions each season, with fixtures arranged against teams such as Chelsea, Birmingham City and Aston Villa. Coaching, Refereeing and Volunteering For those looking for something different from playing opportunities, there are many other routes available. The Devon FA has funding to support females wanting to take a coaching qualification or referee course saw 22 females attend a Female Only Level 1 coaching course and there is another similar course planned for the summer of There are also plenty of opportunities to get involved with local clubs, leagues and schools in a volunteering capacity. School Football Clubs and Leagues are always on the lookout for opportunities to develop and increase girls football participation. One of the most effective ways of doing this is through links with local schools. The local professional clubs in Plymouth Argyle, Exeter City and Torquay United all have programmes to deliver football in schools, and now have specific funding to deliver girls programmes. Each year, the Devon FA runs the annual School Girls County Cup Finals Day. This is a school competition for the under 12, 14 and 16 age groups and features teams from each area of the county who have qualified for the final through area competitions. 34 Football Futures The FA Football Futures Leadership and Volunteering programme aims to recruit, retain, develop, reward and provide a progressive pathway for young leaders in order to develop a skilled football workforce. The young leader is placed at the heart of the FA Football Futures programme choosing what, where and how they wish to volunteer in football across six football themes. Who is the programme for? Any young person aged between 14 and 25 who has an interest in getting involved in football leadership and volunteering. They can be from a range of environments: a school, college or university, attached to an FA Charter Standard Club, or even within the County FA, supporting large events in the community. Young Leaders can choose from a range of activities, from assisting with the coaching or running of a team, acting as the press officer for a junior league, developing a film to promote a new activity for young people to play to refereeing or being a Respect Ambassador. What are the benefits? Through the programme a young leader will gain valuable experience and develop skills that can be applied outside the sport. Once registered on the programme, young leaders will be offered support to gain football related qualifications such as the Level 1 in Coaching Football or refereeing qualifications. All interested young leaders will be enrolled at the County Football Futures Camp, with introductory workshops based around the key themes. 34 Devon FA Young Leaders can track their volunteer hours and gain FA certification for anything between hours. Any young leader who reaches more than 200 hours can be nominated for additional rewards. All young leaders who enrol at County Camp will receive FREE kit! What are the FA Football Futures Themes? Students can get involved in as many of the following themes as they wish: 1 Coaching and Working with Teams Opportunities could include coaching or working with a team in a school, college, university, FA Charter Standard Club or The FA Club Links programme. This can be as simple as assisting an experienced coach, to running one-off coaching sessions and/or working with a team on a regular basis in training and also on match days. 2 Refereeing Refereeing games within school, college, and university, club football on a voluntary basis. Young leaders can get involved in refereeing small sided games, intra-school football or chose to focus on 11-a-side football and become part of the National Referee Development programme.

35 3 Running and Supporting Events Assisting in the coordination and organisation of an event or events. It can be any kind of event from intraschool football to regional/national tournaments. 4 Running and Developing the Game Assisting in the running of an FA Charter Standard Club or League or an intra-school league. This can involve supporting the fixtures secretary, taking minutes at committee meetings or writing development plans to increase participation. 5 Promoting the Game Many young leaders will probably have already been involved in promoting the game through volunteering activities and not even realised! This could be creating a Facebook group for your club, team or league, running a website, writing match reports, or photography. The Promoting the Game strand of the FA Football Futures programme is designed to cater for these activities. 6 RESPECT Ambassador Ensuring that all players have signed up to the Respect Codes of Conduct, putting up Respect barriers and ensuring that teams all understand the competition rules and regulations. This works to ensure that the club, league, school, college or university s Respect practices are adhered to and is rewarded through the programme. What is the cost? Nothing! Step 4 Scroll to the bottom of the page and enter your FAN (FA Number) and password if you know it. Click Login. If you don t have a FAN, visit and a FAN and password can be ed to you. Step 5 If your log in details are correct, you will now be logged into your Devon FA s booking system. Your name will be displayed at the top of the page and you can then enrol on multiple courses/events without having to log in again. To complete your enrolment fill out your card details and click the Enrolment button. Step 8 If payment is successful the confirmation, including your confirmation number will be displayed on screen which you can print off. 37 Members Services Members Services is an online facility being offered by Devon FA and The Football Association. It s free to all affiliated leagues, clubs, referees and coaches. Our aim is to provide online information to leagues, clubs, referees and coaches, giving them access to their football, reducing the administrative burden and giving them up-to-date information instantly, whenever they need it. Members Services is available from our website, via the Members link. You ll need to know your FA Number (FAN number) and you ll need to get a password, which can be obtained automatically from the The FA systems. At present Members Services is available to the following people: Club Official: Secretary, Chairman or Treasurer League Official: Secretary, Chairman or Treasurer Registered Referee Qualified Coach. If you are an official of a club, when you first request access the system will check your details (crossreferencing with the FA/County records), and once you have a password, you can login and access your information. These services enable you to have access to club information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you are a qualified coach or referee, you don t need to request access, you just login using your FAN and Password. If you don t have a FAN, visit and a FAN and password can be ed to you. FA Learning/Online courses The FA trains over 50,000 coaches a year through regional and national courses. These courses cover a range of disciplines across every level of the game. They are produced and administered by FA Learning, the educational arm of The FA. As well as National and Regional courses, FA Learning also offers a range of online courses ranging from Laws of the Game, Psychology courses, Fitness courses, Respect guide. Racism in football is a problem that we all have a responsibility to address and challenge for the good of the game. Health & Safety Policy Devon FA is committed to ensuring that all of its courses are organised at safe and comfortable venues appropriate to the course being delivered. All participants have a responsibility to ensure that the environment in which they are working is safe both to themselves and to any other user whether that person or persons are connected with the course or organising body. Any dangerous or hazardous occurrence must be reported to the course tutor and/or venue manager or their deputy. Providing that the person making the report is not placed in danger personally, he or she should tell others of the hazard. Any accident or incident must be reported to Devon FA and recorded accordingly. Complaints Procedure In the unlikely event that a course candidate has a complaint about any aspect of the course. This should, where appropriate, initially be taken up with the course tutor when the problem arises. If the issue is not addressed to the satisfaction of the candidate, the matter should be referred, in order, to the Devon FA Development Manager, followed by the County Secretary. Full details of the complaint procedure are available to all candidates at the start of the course. 38 Devon FA

39 Important Information Disclaimer The practical aspects of all Devon FA courses may involve opposed practices of mixed gender and games which by their very nature will include physical contact. Candidates must be aware that participation in practical aspects of a course is entirely their own decision and based upon their own assessment of their ability to undertake the level of physical activity required. The Football Association, Devon County Football Association, its coaching staff, the venues, nor their servants, agents or employees are liable for personal injury, loss or damage incurred on any course. Cancellation Clause Refunds of course fees will not be made to any participant who fails to turn up for a course or who cancels within two weeks of the start of the course. Transfer Fee If a participant cancels within two weeks of the start of a course they may, if there is availability, transfer to another course but a transfer fee will apply of 50% of the relevant course fee.
