2 Welcome to Galway On behalf of everyone in Salthill Devon I would like to welcome you all to the West of Ireland. We are delighted to provide the facilities here at our grounds in Drom for the hosting of the CFAI Finals weekend. We hope it will be an extremely successful and enjoyable weekend for all concerned. The Best of luck to all the teams who are competing. Unfortunately we were pipped by Colaiste Ide in the Third round, as we had great hopes of reaching the semi finals as we did in 2004 Hopefully these finals are as successful as Tralee and all the visiting teams enjoy the football and the city. 3 A Few words from the CFAI Executive The Executive Members of the Colleges Football Association of Ireland would like to welcome you to Galway for the 2005 CFAI Cup, Plate and Division 2 Finals. Another year has passed and again we find ourselves at Finals Weekend. The quality of football on display this season has been exceptional and that applies to our National Squad right down through the divisions from Premier to Division 2. Indeed we are most delighted with the return of the Division 2 Final to the Finals Weekend calendar, giving due recognition to those developing teams from each of the five sections of this vast division. Our National Squad have again remained unbeaten so far this season, following the representative trip to Tarragona and our annual fixture versus the Defences Forces. A tough game versus the Universities awaits us and we have high hopes of extending our five-year unbeaten run in this fixture. Congratulations goes to Colaiste Stiofain Naofa on completing a four in a row sequence of Premier League titles this season. We most sincerely thank Salthill Devon & GMIT for their support in hosting the finals. We thank also, the Galway FA, for faciliating us with Referees. Thank you also to Lucozade Sport (Official Sports Drinks Supplier this weekend) and to O Neills Soccer, our National Team Kit Sponsor. We wish all competing teams the best of luck in their respective games and hope that as usual skill, sportsmanship and honest endeavour win the day in each of the three competitions to be decided. 11 National Team Report The Trials for the National Team were held in Dublin in November and Thurles in December. Over the two trials almost 50 players representing 15 member colleges tried out for the squad. Liam Murphy and Gordon Brett had the difficult task of assessing these 50 players and shortlisting down to create a panel of just 24. The Squad took on the Defence Forces and won 3-2 in January before going on its trip to Tarragona in Spain. The trip was a great success with three victories over the week. Brian Warren scored a hat trick in a 4-0 win over Nou Reus CF. Gary Cassin proved the hero in the second game of a Triangular tournament saving two penalties in the shootout following a tense 0-0 draw. Warren was again the goal scorer in the final game a 1-0 win over the University of Tarragona. This sets the squad up nicely for the match verus the University representative team which is scheduled for later this month. National Team v University of Tarragona, Jan 05
