Navy Rolls at Colgate to Win League Opener The Midshipmen opened league play on the right foot by going up to Colgate and scoring a 2-0 win. Freshmen Ashlynn Soellner and Paloma Perez provided the scoring and a stout defensive backline effort with flawless play of the goalkeeper duo of Hannah Legler and freshman Alexes-Lopez-Shaw kept the Colgate in check. Colgate is the defending Patriot League Champion and preseason favorite. Coach Gabarra on Army It's a big game every year. It's got a different personality every year because you have different players. Even if one of the teams is better than the other in any sport, in Navy-Army it tends to be a close game because there is so much emotion involved. And we like to play in a game like that. You want to play against a team that s going to play at its best. You want to play in a game that has a lot of meaning, as it does. We of course talk a lot that week about the fact that we are playing the game for something more important than ourselves. We are playing for Naval and Marine Officers all over the world. People do watch and people do look for the scores and people do tune in to how we are doing and people care. So for those people out there working hard for us, or have partnered in our success, we really play for them and it s a big game for us. Navy in Patriot League Play The Mids are now in their 17th season of Patriot League competition. The Mids have posted an alltime record of (.682) during the regular season. In addition, the team is (.776) during the regular season since the beginning of the 2006 season. Navy has won three Patriot League Tournament Championships (2003, 2006 and 2007) and six regular season championships (1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2006 and 2008). Freshman Paloma Perez Named Patriot League/BRINE Offensive Player of the Week Freshman forward Paloma Perez was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 4. Perez helped Navy post a record last weekend and she contributed six points. Perez had a goal in Navy s 2-0 road win at Colgate and had a goal and two assists in a 6-0 win over Delaware State on Sunday. Perez now has five goals and 12 points in just eight games this season. Navy has now been awarded five player of the week honors this season. Also, Perez becomes just the sixth freshmen in the storied history of Navy women s soccer to be named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week. 5 Navysports.com October 5, 2010 Making it Count Carissa Youker Youker makes the most of clutch goals, time at the Naval Academy Senior women's soccer forward Carissa Youker has a knack for scoring big goals. Youker has come through time after time when Navy needs someone to deliver and halfway through her senior year, she ranks second in school history in game-winning goals. She has clinched a Patriot League Championship and has scored goals in games against Army, Miami and Texas. But soccer is just a part of Youker's life at the Naval Academy, and like her clutch scoring, she is making her time in Annapolis count. The bigger picture "I came to the Naval Academy to play soccer," said Youker. "But since I've been here it's become something a lot bigger than that, a lot more important than that. A turning point for Youker came in the summer after her sophomore year. "When I did Protramid, I realized there was a bigger picture, there's something more than just soccer. That's when I started getting excited about having a career outside of soccer when I graduated." Protramid is a three-week summer training course that gives rising juniors an in-depth introduction into aviation, submarines and Marine Corps communities. "Then signing the two for seven definitely just kind of solidified what Protramid did for me. I signed my two for seven not just to continue playing soccer but for the bigger picture of what I am here for." Part of Youker's bigger picture will result in her being commissioned as an ensign in the Navy in May. The two for sevens ensured her commitment to her remaining two years at the Academy and for five years of active duty after graduation. She is putting in for a service assignment of surface warfare. Youker is also making the most of the academic aspect of the Naval Academy. She will earn a bachelor's degree in international relations and posted a 3.1 grade point average last semester. "Carissa is here for a bigger reason than just soccer and she knows that," said head coach Carin Gabarra. "Soccer is obviously a huge part of our players' lives and a big part of what they do while they're here. We want it to be that way, but we also know that they are moving on to bigger and better things when they graduate and Carissa has always embraced that." This past summer, Youker served as an operations detailer for Plebe Summer. She made daily schedules and supervised the plebes in her company, putting to use the leadership skills that she has developed while at the Academy. Since Youker was on the yard over the summer, she was also able to help the soccer coaching staff with a number of different tasks. "We relied on Carissa for a lot of things that went on during the summer that she could help us with and she was always there and reliable," said Gabarra. "She was tremendous." Family roots One of the reasons Youker chose the Naval Academy was because of her family background. Her father, Jim, is retired member of the U.S. Army and he impressed upon his daughter some of the benefits of attending a service academy. "My dad definitely pushed service academies on me my whole life, said Youker. We used to live in Colorado and my dad wanted me to go to the Air Force Academy. Then we moved to Maryland we started looking at the Naval Academy." Youker had a successful playing career at Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, Md. and graduated in Gabarra recruited Youker to the Naval Academy and she was off to Plebe Summer just a short time after graduation. Freshman clinches Patriot League Championship "Carissa came in here as a goal scorer, said Gabarra. But it's hard to play a whole lot as a plebe here. We're usually pretty talented and it's hard to step in and play right away. Youker was able to further develop during the first few months of the season and remained ready for when her number was called. "We've always had a lot of good attacking players and she played behind some great forwards. She spent some time watching them and learning from them that year and getting used to our level and our speed of play. When we needed her most she stepped up." As it would turn out, the first situation in which Gabarra needed Youker to step up was the 2007 Patriot League Championship game. Navy was playing at top-seeded Bucknell with the league crown and a berth in the NCAA Tournament on the line. Youker, just a freshman at the time with one career goal, subbed in late in the first half of a scoreless game. In the 42nd minute, Navy s Sam Schroth flicked the ball with her head towards Youker, who was making a run on goal. Youker controlled the ball and fired to sink the game-winner, just past the outstretched hands of the Bucknell keeper. Navy s defense insured Youker s goal would stand up and the Mids went on to win the game, 1-0, earning their second straight Patriot League Championship and berth into the NCAA Tournament. "That goal really jump-started Carissa s career," said Gabarra. "She had a good freshman season but scoring a game-winner like that in the playoffs was huge." Midshipman record-setter Youker's career has indeed taken off since the 2007 Patriot League title game. She has gone on to lead Navy in goals during both her sophomore and junior seasons and currently leads the team in points in She has earned a pair of All-Patriot League accolades and is a strong candidate for a third honor at the conclusion of this season. "I always want to get better than what I was the previous season," said Youker. "That's been my goal since my plebe year." A quick glance at the Navy record books confirms Youker's consistent significance to the women's soccer program. She enters the weekend ranked second in gamewinning goals, seventh in goals and 10th in points. When Youker scores a goal, Navy's record is One of the many important goals of Youker's career came against Army in the 2009 Star Game. With Navy leading 1-0 in the second half, and in front of a Glenn Warner Soccer Facility record 2,627 fans, Youker took a feed and beat the Army keeper 1-on-1 to give Navy an insurance tally and put the game out of reach. Youker will have another chance to recreate some of her Star Game magic when Navy plays at Army on Friday. The Mids will hope to retain the N-Star the two service academies continue one of the most storied rivalries in college athletics. Hard work pays off Some of the qualities that make Youker such a proficient goal scorer are her instincts and her ability to finish opportunities. Also, Youker attributes her success to her hard work in practice paying off in games. "A lot of what we do in practice translates to games," said Youker. "We practice a lot of the runs that I'll make to get in the box and I end up in a lot of those types of situations in games." "She's very opportunistic," said Gabarra. "She works hard to get herself in the right spot and she makes the most of each situation." Although Gabarra s last comment was directed towards Youker s success on the playing field, it can be seen that Youker s characteristics as a soccer player are consistent with those she possesses as a student-athlete, midshipman and future Naval Officer. No matter what situation Youker is in, she is making it count.

6 Kicking it up a Level - Katie Kelly Senior defender giving it all in final season Navysports.com Sept. 29, 2010 As Katie Kelly prepared for spring practice prior to her senior season, she decided to take her training efforts to a new level. Kelly had already been a successful member of the Navy women's soccer team, but she felt she could give more to her training regimen and to her team. "I realized that I didn't want to have any regrets and that this is my last year to do things," said Kelly. "I wanted to act the right way and do things right. I wanted to practice the right way so that on the field, I would do everything I could possibly do for our team." Kelly's increased commitment didn't go unnoticed by her coach, who saw the improvement she made in her training turn her into a better player and a better leader. "Katie made a huge jump last spring by training as hard as she could all the time," said head coach Carin Gabarra. "Now she's a much better player because of it. She's also a much better leader and people look up to her a lot more because of the way she presents herself every training session." Kelly is now a three-year starter on Navy's defensive backline. She has appeared in 76 career games and has helped the Mids post 38 shutouts during that span, an average of one clean sheet every other game. However, she has saved the best for last, improving each season and playing the best soccer of her career as a senior. "That's the process of being at the Naval Academy," said Gabarra. "We expect our players to get better and stronger every year. We expect them to train hard and we expect them to do that in all parts of their lives here. Katie has really embraced that and has made sure it is evident all the time." Part of Kelly's growth has been her development as a vocal leader on the field. Defense is a cornerstone of Navy's program and Kelly has embraced her role as the coordinator of the backline. "I try to focus on being consistent, being a communicator and being an organizer," said Kelly. "It's really important for our backline to be organized and I think we've been getting better over the last couple of games." Gabarra's system relies on all 11 players being defenders at all times and she depends on Kelly to keep the defense's shape on the field. "Katie's a vocal leader back there and she's also looked up to as a senior," said Gabarra. "Defending is what we're all about. It's always been the biggest part of our program and Katie's been steady and we rely on her communication skills to get that done." Although Kelly has increased her role on the team this season, she has always been an important contributor to Navy's strong defensive unit. The Mids ranked first or second in the Patriot League in goals allowed per game in each of Kelly's first three years, with the high-water mark being her sophomore season. It was Kelly's first year as a full-time starter and she helped the team rank 12th in the nation with a 0.60 goals-against average. Navy allowed only 14 goals in 22 games and advanced to the Patriot League Championship. Kelly's play was solid during that 2008 season and she hasn't relinquished her starting position as a central back since. "Katie has all the good attributes of a center back," said Gabarra. "She's mobile, she's quick, she's fit and she's pretty good in the air. She also likes to go forward and has good timing coming out of the back and she's composed on the ball as well." One of Kelly's biggest strengths as a defender is her ability to win 1-on-1 battles with opposing attackers. "I try to think 'I'm getting the ball' and if not, I'm trying to slow them down and change what they are trying to do," said Kelly. "I look for the mistake that they're going to make. Sometimes I'll wait for a touch where they play it just a little too much and in front of them where they don't have complete control anymore and that's when I make my move." Kelly and the Navy defense have helped the team to a record and the Mids are carrying momentum from back-to-back wins into Friday's Patriot League opener at defending league champion Colgate. As usual, a key for Navy against Colgate will be the play of Kelly and her organization of the backline. And as Kelly continues her strong play this season for the Mids, it is evident that her commitment to her training has made her a better player, leader and teammate.

7 Preseason Chat with Navy Women's Soccer Coach Carin Gabarra Navysports.com Aug. 20, 2010 What are your expectations for this year's team? Our team expectations have never changed. We want to win the Patriot league and go to the NCAA tournament every year. We go into preseason with clear goals and expect the players to do the work to achieve them. Navy's defense has ranked near the top of the Patriot League in scoring defense for the past several years. Talk about the importance of the group of veteran defenders that return this year. Defending is the backbone of our team and program. We have 11 defenders on the field at all times and rely on each player to do the defensive work. We know we will not lose games if we do not give up goals. Defending takes a lot of communicating and organizing, and having veteran players who know the system is a tremendous help. We need our veteran players to step up and lead in our system. Senior forwards Carissa Youker and Christine Calderon return after each earning all-league honors in How does it help your game plan knowing that you have two experienced returning goal-scorers? Scoring goals is the hardest part of the game. We are very fortunate that we do not rely on one single player to do the scoring for us, but have different players step up in any given game to make the difference. We are talented enough to get goals from all over the field. But having said that, we know we have two talented goalscorers up front for us that get the job done when we need it. Navy's four-member goalkeeping unit has logged a combined 109 career minutes entering this season, what is the staff currently doing to prepare this group for the season? Truthfully, nothing prepares for a game like a game itself but we do our best to put our goalkeepers under intense pressure each and every day. They get physical training with footwork and strength. They get technical training with ball handling, distribution and 1v1's. And of course they get tactical training within the framework of live play. The goalkeepers we have on the squad have a great work ethic, willingness to learn and study the game, and each of them is confident in their abilities. The lack of game experience is inevitable when you lose the top goalkeeper in the conference but the upside with this group is tremendous. The coaching staff and the team know that we will continue to have top goalkeepers and we will play the goalkeeper that puts our team in the best position to beat Army, win the conference and compete each and every day. Last season, four freshmen each started 11 or more games. Do you see this year's freshman class making the same amount of immediate contribution? If we are recruiting effectively, we will have freshmen step in and make an impact each year. We have a great class this year, with very diverse talents and abilities, and we do expect them to change games for us. They are fit and excited to put on a NAVY jersey. Senior Jessica Grupp was elected by her teammates as captain for the 2010 season. Talk about her leadership traits and how she will aid the team as its captain. It is a special honor to be voted captain by your peers, at any level, but especially at a leadership institution. Jess will be a great leader for us and has already shown the ability to carry the workload that a captain has to manage. She is approachable, sincere and fair, and has the respect of all her teammates. A special twist will be added to this season's Army-Navy game, as the matchup will be broadcast nationally on Fox Soccer Channel as the NSCAA/College Game of the Week. Are you excited that the storied rivalry will be played out on a national stage and what does the increased exposure mean for the program? We are very excited to get the chance to play on National television, especially against Army, although we did not need any extra incentive. The Army-Navy game has special meaning to our team because we play for all the Navy and Marine Corps officers stationed all over the world. The game is bigger than just us, and we also want to let all the former players know that their contribution to our program does not go unnoticed. We also hope to play quality soccer and sell our game to all others who will watch the game. Navy is one of just 10 teams in the nation with at least 10 wins over each of the last 15 seasons. What are some of the keys to Navy's consistent success over such a long period of time? I think that biggest reason for our team success is the commitment and passion our players have always given to our program. We expect a lot from them, both physically and mentally, every day they step into our facility and they have always risen to the challenge. A year ago, Beth Reed continued a strong trend of academic success by being named the ESPN The Magazine Women's Soccer Academic All- American of the Year. What can be attributed the program's success in developing well-rounded student-athletes? Academic, athletic, and moral development are all very important to us as a program. We want to win games and we want to reach higher athletic goals with our program, as well as achieve in the classroom, but at the end of the day, we want our players to be respected leaders with character and dignity. When Navy began their women's soccer program in 1993, you were named its first head coach, and to this day, remain its only head coach in program history. What are some of the qualities of the Naval Academy that have kept you in the position for so long? I have been at the US Naval Academy for a long time, and there is no doubt that the qualities of the people I work with daily are the biggest reason that I love my job. The athletic department has always supported me in every aspect, and they will do whatever I need relevant to the success of our program. I also cannot ever ask more from the athletes and staff that I work with. They are passionate, driven, and focused at all times, and certainly make it a pleasure to work with each day. Each player and staff I work with currently, and worked with in the past, have been very special to me.

8 Navysports.com Aug. 18, 2010 Quick Kicks with Navy Women's Soccer Senior Captain Jessica Grupp Grupp becomes the 18th Midshipman selected as team captain Senior defender Jessica Grupp was been elected by her teammates to serve as the Navy's Women's Soccer team captain for the 2010 season. Grupp discusses her captaincy, the upcoming season, and her experiences as a Midshipman. What was your reaction to be voted captain by your teammates? It was an emotional moment when I heard my name announced. [Former team captain] Beth [Reed] handed over the three-striper shoulder boards and it was an unbelievable feeling. In my opinion being voted captain is one of the best positions to be held at the Academy, mainly because it is decided upon by peers and teammates, and not just solely officers. I felt honored and humbled that my teammates saw me in that light and have faith in me to represent the team as a leader. What have you learned from previous teammates, especially last year's senior class, which you will use in your new leadership role? Last year's senior class set a high standard for the new senior class. They all worked extremely hard and put the team before themselves. Each of the four seniors had their own leadership style that I admire and wish to incorporate into my own. As captain, I have big shoes to fill that Beth left behind. Beth epitomized leading by example whether it was on or off the field. In this new leadership position, my goals are to work hard for my team and be there for my teammates. I will always place the team before myself. You are a part of a strong six-member senior class, what are your expectations for the team and your classmates in your final year at Navy? I couldn't have asked for better classmates. We all have the same goals and cooperate well together. In order to have a standard, you must first set the standard. Our class holds one another accountable to set a high standard. Our ultimate goal is to lead the team to the NCAA Tournament at the end of the season. We intend to do that by pushing ourselves and our team to constantly put forth 100% effort every moment we step on the field. With the new freshman class and all the returning players, we have the potential to achieve these goals. The main objective is for everyone to continue to work hard and believe in one another. We have a great group and everyone is excited to start playing and seeing our hard work be put to the test. You have been named to the Commandant's and Dean's List, while also being a four-year member of the soccer team. Talk about some of the ways you have been able to be successful in both academics and athletics. Travelling away from the hall was advantageous in the fact that it gave me a reason to seek extra instruction from my teachers in order to receive the work I missed. E.I. has benefitted me to better understand the material and furthermore show my efforts to improve and succeed. Also, I love my major, oceanography. When you enjoy a subject it makes it easier to learn and want to learn. Lastly, I have been fortunate enough to have great teachers, who not only enjoy teaching, but also want to help students succeed. All these factors plus the help of my classmates have led me to be successful in the academic realm. As far as athletics are concerned I have my coaches and my teammates both present and those who have graduated to thank for my progress. [Coaches] Carin Gabarra and Rob Blanck set expectations that push our potential and stretch our capabilities. During practices our team works hard to better ourselves and one another. NWS is a family that supports one another and has allowed me to improve both physically and technically and has formed friendships that go beyond the game of soccer. Your father is a retired Lt. Col. Air Force Pilot who was active duty for 12 years. He also taught aviation classes at Army and you were born in West Point, N.Y. What was it like to grow up in that environment and did you always want to attend a service academy? I was constantly at West Point for high school track meets, soccer games, or when I was younger to see Army ice hockey and football games (don't worry I was never cheering for Army). I did not consider attending West Point because as inconsequential as it sounds, the location is too close to home. Like most high school students, I was eager to go away for college. I didn't consider the Naval Academy or the military until my junior year of high school. Part of the interest was from my father and the other part was from my sister. They wanted me to explore the option of the Academy because of the great opportunities this school has to offer and the rewarding experience of the military. Although I grew up in a military family, my brothers were the ones who would visit my father at his base. However, despite my lack of knowledge about the military I witnessed my father's work ethic and met his friends from the Academy and knew that if this was the military, it was worth looking into. You spent part of this summer with the Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa. Talk about your experience with the program and how it will benefit you as a future officer. My training with CJTF-HOA was by far my best experience at the Naval Academy. Our group saw how all the branches of the military worked together towards one common goal and furthermore, how the United States military worked with foreign coalition militaries. I was unaware of the United States' mission in Africa, but after the training realized the importance of not only the mission but also our presence in Africa. We met with the Djiboutian Navy, completed the French Foreign Legion water obstacle course, went to several bases in Uganda to meet with high ranking Ugandan officers, and visited a village in Uganda and Tanzania. For me, the village visits were my favorite part of the training because of the interaction with the local people. The villages were very receptive to our visits and it was difficult to leave. In Tanzania, a group of us played soccer with the local children. It was 20 of them against 5 of us and a few of the elders. Needless to say, the children won. My time spent in Africa was rewarding and humbling at the same time. I learned the importance of being a diplomat for not only the Academy but the United States military. What is your favorite part of life as a Midshipman? My favorite aspect of being a midshipman is the opportunities the Academy gives Midshipman. Not many people get to fly an SH-60, a T-34, fire various combat weapons, lead boy scouts through the mountains of New Mexico, and go on a three-week training to Africa. These are just a few of the trainings that made up my summers. The experiences and people I have met through each training has helped shape me into the leader I have strived to be and the officer I hope to become. What are your plans for after graduation? I hope to be a Naval Aviator upon graduation. Over protramid, flying and the community really appealed to me. I also would like to attend grad school at some point. However, I am open to any path the military presents to me. What is your most memorable moment as an athlete at Navy? Playing in Europe plebe year over spring break will always be special to me. We played in Rota, Spain and a bunch of Navy guys came to watch our game. Not only was it my first time out of the United States but it was when I realized the true unity of the United States military. Furthermore, the ability to play in another country was an incredible feeling. Many of the players didn't speak English and not many of our teammates spoke Spanish but as a billboard in Africa stated, we spoke "1 common language. Football". After the game we traded jerseys. I still have mine in my room.
