2 Carin Gabarra Head Coach 14th Season at Navy Carin Gabarra is a proven winner. Not only was she a success as a forward on the UC-Santa Barbara soccer team and later in her career playing for the United States National Team, but Gabarra also had the golden touch to lead others by example. It is the gift of leadership which has led her to become one of the household names within the collegiate coaching ranks. Not because she was an eight-time All-America (four in high school and four at UC-Santa Barbara), and not because she was a member of the 1996 gold-medal winning U.S. national team, but because she has developed the Navy soccer program from ground level to one of the most competitive teams in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Since taking over the Navy program in 1993, she has taken the Midshipmen from a club-level organization to an NCAA Tournament team. Building from the Beginning Gabarra arrived at Navy in 1993, and led the Mids to a 2-5 mark in their first season as a varsity sport. In the process, Navy gained valuable playing experience before beginning Patriot League competition in The Mids showed great progress in their inaugural season in the league, as they missed the Patriot League playoffs by one game and finished with a record. The improvement continued in '95 with Navy boasting a record of With a third-place regular-season finish that season, the Mids made their first Patriot League Tournament appearance, falling in the championship contest. The team's success didn't stop there. The '96 squad produced an record, finished fourth in the league and was invited to appear in its first postseason tournament with a game against Monmouth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament. Gabarra guided the 1997 team to a 10-8 record and a third-place finish in the Patriot League, registering a 4-2 mark. Six Mids earned All-Patriot League recognition, including Defensive Player of the Year and Academic All-America honoree, Nicole Aunapu. The 1998 season fulfilled dreams of many, as Gabarra led the Mids to a school-record 17 wins, 14 shutouts, 52 goals and Navy's first regular-season Patriot League title. Navy also knocked off Colgate for the first time in its history and broke the Red Raiders' 16-game winning streak versus league foes. In addition, an unprecedented nine Mids earned all-league honors, including eight first-team members. Justine Fisher earned rookie-of-the-year accolades, while Jim and Carin Gabarra talk soccer with the President of the United States, George W. Bush. Aunapu was dubbed Defensive Player of the Year for the second-consecutive season. Aunapu was just the sixth player in league history to earn First-Team All-Patriot League recognition all four years and concluded her season as an Academic All-American. In 1999, Navy again made a run at the league crown, as the Mids shared the regular-season title with a 5-1 Patriot League mark. The Mids scored 51 goals on the season, nearly doubling their opponents' total of 26. In league action, Navy scored 17 goals, while holding its opponents to just two and without an assist in six games. While making a return trip to the Patriot League Tournament Championship contest, six Mids were dubbed all-league, including Fisher who became Navy's first player to be honored as the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. The year 2000 brought Fisher her third all-league honor, as the Mids captured a record and earned a bid to the Patriot League Tournament for the Gabarra s Career Coaching Ledger School Record Westmont College ( ) Navy (1993-present) Career Record Gabarra at Navy Overall Patriot League Year Record Pct. 3 sixth-consecutive season. Meanwhile, two rookies showed a glimmer of greatness to come in the likes of Amelia Sheveland, who tied the school record for goals in a game with four, and Stacy Finley who started 17 games and played virtually every position. Just one win shy of the school record, the 2001 team found its share of success as it claimed a share of the Patriot League Regular-Season title with a overall mark and 6-1 league record. Fisher became Navy s all-time leading scorer, while Gabarra claimed her 100th-career victory all in one eventful day Oct. 28, 2001, against George Mason. Navy swept the all-league honors, as Finley earned the offensive player-of-the-year title, Kate Macfarlane was deemed the defensive player of the year and Xochitl Piedra was co-rookie of the year. Meanwhile, both Macfarlane and Fisher garnered Academic All-America recognition. The Mids posted the program s first undefeated regular season at , before American upset Navy in the Patriot League Tournament to leave the only blemish on the Mids 2002 record. Navy was the only Div. i school that finished the 2002 season without a loss in regular-season play. Finley garnered her second-straight Patriot League Offensive Player-of-the-Year award after setting single-season school records with 45 points and 19 goals. Defensively, Kim Bonafede was among the top three in the nation throughout the year in goalsagainst average, setting the Navy record at Nadia Sheikh earned First- Team All-Patriot League recognition after breaking the Navy assist record with 27 in her last game of her career. In 2003, Navy claimed its first Patriot League Tournament title and became the first Naval Academy women's team in any sport to earn a bid to play in the NCAA Tournament. En route to their record, the Mids owned the nation's longest regular-season unbeaten streak (35 games) before dropping a one-goal decision to eventual national champion North Carolina. Over 6,500 fans witnessed the game, breaking the NCAA single-game attendance record. Stacy Finley was named First-Team All-Patriot League after becoming the Mids' all-time leader in career scoring, goals scored and shots taken. Classmate Amelia Sheveland garnered Patriot League Tournament MVP recognition, finishing her career as Navy s fourth-leading scorer all-time. The year 2004 was a year of rebuilding on the offensive side of the field and its two marquee players came into the year having undergone knee surgeries, and Molly Burd missed the entire season with a broken foot. Navy dropped its opening-three games in Patriot League play, but responded by winning four straight. Defender Xochitl Piedra closed out her career by being named to the Patriot League First Team, just the third player in Academy history to be named all-league all four years. Curran and midfielder Stephanie Parker were named to the first team, while midfielder Sarah Hessinger and keeper Kim Bonafede garnered second-team recognition. Injuries were the continued theme as forwards Brigitte Fox and Kari Weniger fell victim to knee injuries, while four-year starting defender Lindsay Adlam broke her foot in the Mids league opener at American. But for junior Meggie Curran, she finally was healthy and it showed on the playing field. Curran, a First- Team All-Patriot League selection, led the The Gabarra Family: Carin, Talia, Abigail, Tyler, Jim league with 32 points on nine goals and a school-record 14 assists. She will head into her senior campaign in a three-way tie as the program s leader with 27-career assists. Junior midfielder Molly Burd and sophomore defender Lauren Griebel also garnered all-conference recognition, as both were named to the second team. A Star in the Making A native of Palos Verdes, Calif., Gabarra graduated from California at Santa Barbara in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business management. A standout forward for the Gaucho soccer team, she became the NCAA s all-time leading scorer with 102 goals and 60 assists. She held that post until 1993 when fellow Olympian Mia Hamm broke Gabarra's record. Gabarra was a fourtime All-America honoree and UC-Santa Barbara's Woman Athlete of the Decade in 1987, as well as Scholastic Athlete of the Year. In October of 1991, she was inducted into the UC-Santa Barbara Athletic Hall of Fame. She remains the record holder in every individual category at Santa Barbara excluding goalkeeper records most goals in a game, season and career; most assists in a season and career; most points in a season and career; most shots in a season and career; and most games played in a career. A standout at Palos Verdes High School, as well, she led the nation in scoring from by netting 226 goals and garnered high school All-America accolades four times. Coaching Roots Gabarra began her coaching career in 1987 as the head coach at Westmont College in Santa Barbara. There she guided the Warriors to a record. She moved on to Harvard in 1988, serving as an assistant coach. Pride of the United States While coaching at Harvard, Gabarra continued competing on the international level where she led the U.S. to its first-ever World Championship title in 1991 by scoring six goals and was the recipient of the "Golden Ball," presented to the outstanding player of the championship. She garnered United States Soccer s Female Athlete-of-the-Year honors in 1992, after winning the award for the first time in She was also tagged the 1987 and '92 United States Olympic Committee Player of the Year. Though retired from professional soccer these days, Gabarra was named to the Stars of the Century Team in the summer of The role call includes the best 11 players in the history of women's soccer in the United States Gabarra, Michelle Akers, Brandi Chastain, Joy Fawcett, Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm, April Heinrichs, Kristine Lilly, Tiffeny Milbrett, Carla Overbeck and Briana Scurry. Gabarra and her 1996 gold medal-winning teammates were inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame last June. In addition to her coaching duties at Navy, Gabarra is active with the Olympic Development Programs that scout prospective national team players and is a member of the U.S. Soccer Athlete Advisory Council. She serves on the Athlete Advisory Board Project 2012 and is a member of the U.S. Olympic Committe Athlete Advisory Council. Additionally, Gabarra is a member of the Maryland Physical Fitness Council. She is also an honorary member of Habitat for Humanity: Women Building a Legacy. The Legacy Continues Despite retiring from international competition in late 1997, Gabarra's legacy continues to live on. The first U.S. player to be named MVP of the Women's World Cup, Gabarra, along with former New York Cosmos superstar Giorgio Chinaglia, were inducted at a public ceremony Oct. 28, 2000, at the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, N.Y. She is just the second woman player to be inducted, as former World Cup teammate April Heinrichs was the first to be enshrined in The Gabarras While her decision to leave the playing realm of soccer, the sport would remain a integral part of her future. In 1992, the former Carin Jennings married Jim Gabarra, no stranger to the soccer world, and incorporated her competitve spirit both as a player and now a collegiate coach. A former captain of the U.S. Indoor National Team, Jim played on the 1988 Olympic team, was a member of the 1990 World Cup-qualifying team and competed in the '89, '92 and 96 Futsal World Championships. He served as the head coach of the WUSA s Washington Freedom. The couple resides in Arnold with their son, Tyler (9), and daughters, Abigail (7) and Talia (5). 3

4 Rob Blanck Assistant Coach 12th Season at Navy In his 12th season, assistant coach Rob Blanck has been alongside Carin Gabarra from nearly day one in building the Naval Academy women's soccer program. Blanck came to the Academy in 1995, just two years after the Navy women's soccer team was elevated to Division-I status. Blanck knows nothing other than winning, having been a member of the Williams College varsity soccer team which owned a winning record all four years in which he played, while in his 12 years as a coach, all of his teams have posted winning records. Blanck's background as an All-America goalkeeper has been a key element in developing Navy's corps of goalkeepers. Under his tutelage, Navy has produced four all-league goalkeepers in three-time All-Patriot League honoree Amy Hakola, two-time all-league Sarah Wilson, 2001 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Kate Macfarlane and three-time allleague Kim Bonafede. Hakola, Navy's all-time saves leader (479) was a four-year starter ( ) for the Mids, while Wilson ( ) owns Navy's single-season record for shutouts (11.5). Macfarlane played just two season for the Mids ( ), but ended her career with a 1.00 goalsagainst average and 10.1 shutouts. Bonafede, meanwhile, scorched the Navy record books with her 0.36 GAA in 2002, and set the Mids all-time shutouts record with 22 her senior campaign. Over the last seven seasons, the Navy defensive unit has held its opponents to just 143 goals and produced a 0.93 goals-against average. In 1998, Navy set the tone with a then record-breaking 14 shutouts. Blanck was also instrumental in recruiting Justine Fisher, a four-time All-Patriot League selection, as well as developing Nicole Aunapu, the first women's soccer player to garner all-league recognition all four years. In the summer of 2003, Blanck was selected to coach the United States in the CISM World Military Games in Germany. He guided the team, which included three former Naval Academy standouts Cristina Esposito ( 98), Tara Refo ( 00) and Sarah Wilson ( 01), to a bronze medal with a pair of wins over neighboring Canada. Prior to his arrival in Annapolis, he served as an assistant coach at Boston College three years with the women s soccer team and two seasons with the men s team. During his stay in Chestnut Hill, he helped guide the Eagles to postseason play three-consecutive years, while Boston College also appeared in the national rankings. A native of Weston, Mass., Blanck graduated from Williams College in 1989, where he captained the soccer team to two regional titles and earned First-Team All-America honors after setting four national goalkeeping records. Blanck compiled a record as a college goalkeeper. He also played baseball and received the Fox Award (in honor of a Navy pilot killed in the Korean War) for recognition of achievements of character and sportsmanship. Prior to coaching full time, Blanck worked for the Boston Red Sox for two years and completed a Master's Degree in sports management at Massachusetts. He received a second master's in business administration from Babson College. Blanck has received his NSCAA advanced national diploma and his USFF "A" coaching license. He has also served on the staff for the Maryland Olympic Development Program for five years. Blanck and his wife, the former Kristin Buckley, were married on July 29 of this year. Last season Navy was tasked with replacing six starters, including the entire defensive unit. And while the Mids looked to have gotten off to a solid start, by the middle of the season, injuries, depth and experience began to catch up with them. By the start of the Patriot League slate, Navy was without two of its top three forwards due to injury, while its rock, team captain Lindsay Adlam, also succumbed to injury. The Mids finished the year and missed the Patriot League Tournament for a second year in a row. A year later, the factors that cut expectations short in 05 could be the very factors that will help the Mids succeed in 06 experience, depth and health. Twelve letterwinners, including seven starters, return for the Midshipmen, which features five members of the sophomore class. Perhaps the most exciting part of the 2006 team for Gabarra is its will to win and its likeness to the 2003 team that claimed the school s first Patriot League Women s Soccer Tournament title and earned an NCAA Tournament bid. This is probably the most talented team we ve had in a long time, soccer-wise, said Gabarra. But we also have a strong mentality that hasn t been present in the last couple of years. Physically we are fit, and as quick and agile as ever. We ve always had the talent to play the game, but the will to win has wavered a bit in the last couple of years based some different factors. That will to win should be back and present and should make a difference in us winning or losing the closer games. Gabarra traditionally looks to the senior class to step up and take on the leadership reigns. All four seniors were starters a year ago and got a taste of the ultimate success as freshmen on Navy s NCAA Tournament-bound squad. Senior leadership is inherent of the school. The first-class lead. That s the way the school works and that s the way our team has always worked. This class will be very good in the leadership role. They have strong personalities and they all have extremely strong work ethics. They work to exhaustion, they refuse to lose, they are extremely competitive individuals. Leading by example is one thing, but you have to be good leaders off the field as well. We expect them to be good leaders in the Hall and academically. They ve talked to each other a lot and figured out what they ve liked and what has worked in the past. They ve worked hard since they got here to do everything they can to make the team succeed. Forwards Who Returns No. Player Yr. GP SH G A P 3 Brigitte Fox Jr Kari Weniger Jr Kristen Laraway So Meggie Curran Sr Sam Schroth So Newcomers No. Player Hometown 19 Cassie Barbaresi Bradenton, Fla. Last season, Navy s forwards took a beating, losing a pair of players to season-ending knee injuries. Looking ahead to the season, the forward position is loaded with talent. The Mids return one of the premier players in the conference in two-time First-Team All-Patriot League forward Meggie Curran. An All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection a year ago, Curran paced the Patriot League in points (32), assists and assists per game. She is only one of five players in program history to score 30-plus points in a season. She finished the 05 campaign with 14 assists, setting the Navy s single-season record, while tying the career record with 27. Nationally she ranked eighth in assists per game, posting 0.7 per outing. If not the top forward in the league last year, I think Meggie really wants to prove herself this year, said Gabarra. Not having had the success as a team the last two years, although she has still set a lot of individual records, I think she wants more than anything to have her team succeed at a level that we know we can reach. Navy is anxious to have junior Brigitte Fox return to the lineup. Fox, a member of the 2004 Soccer Buzz All-Mid-Atlantic Freshman Team, suffered a season-ending knee injury just four games into the 2005 season. As a freshman, Fox was the Mids second-leading scorer, producing 22 points on eight goals and six assists. It s great to have Brigitte back healthy. You can t match her speed and her ability to get behind opposing defenders. Kari Weniger, who scored two goals and added three assists, had her season cut short a year ago after also sustaining a knee injury. Finally, look for Cassie Barbaresi to make a statement in her freshman season. We want to give Cassie creative freedom up top. She s a play maker, but an attacking forward as well, so we have to find the right niche for her. 6 UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

Navy has plenty of experience in its midfielder corps, including team captain Molly Burd who garnered Second-Team All-Patriot League kudos in Burd serves as the Mids play maker, the organizer of their offense. Last season, Burd produced 17 points on five goals and seven assists as Navy s third-leading scorer. Molly is our playmaker. She scored some very important goals in big games the last couple of years. She ll have more freedom to play make with the forwards we have this year. She had a really good spring and is as fit as she has ever been. Julie Reynolds and CiAnna Weikle were both major contributors in the midfield as rookies a year ago. Reynolds, who started all 20 games last season, is relentless with her on-the-ball pressure and is constantly looking to push the Mids forward. She is one of the most well-rounded performers on the Navy roster. Julie Reynolds was the heart and soul of our center midfield last year and will return. We haven t had a player play the kind of the minutes with the intensity and drive that she gives us. Weikle played in every game as a freshman where she was credited with a pair of assists. Like Reynolds, Weikle seeks the opportunity to dominate the midfield. Another veteran player in the midfield is senior Carmen Myers. A three-year letterwinner, Myers experience and leadership will play a vital role in Navy s organization in the midfield. She has played in 63 games over her three seasons, producing 21 points on seven goals and seven assists. Who Returns No. Player Yr. Navy s defensive unit will certainly take a hit with the loss of four-year starter Lindsay Adlam who graduated in the spring. However, the Mids were forced to regroup midway through the season after Adlam suffered a broken foot in the Patriot League opener against American. The Navy coaching staff will look to Kristi Coonfare to spearhead the defensive efforts this fall. Coonfare is a three-year letterwinner who has started eight or more games in each of her first three seasons. She was part of a defensive unit that surrendered 1.22 goals per game a year ago, the sixthlowest goals-against average in program history. Last year she opened the season injured, however, she enters the fall healthy and ready to take on the responsibility of being the defensive anchor. Kristi will emerge as our defensive leader. We missed her defensive presence in the first couple of games last year when she hadn t returned from injury. That became very apparent when she came back and we relied upon her defensive presence to boost us. A starter in 19 of the 20 contests a year ago, second-year standout Elise McCaskey had an exceptional first season playing in the back, a position she was not accustomed to playing. Described by Gabarra as the stalwart of the Mids defense, McCaskey is a terrific one-on-one defender who is explosive and dangerous in transition. Elise was one of our best one-vs.-one defenders last year as a freshman having never playing back there before. I m very excited to see the level she can reach this year. Junior Lauren Griebel has started 27 of the 39 contests in which she has played over the last two years and was rewarded last season by being named to the Patriot League Second Team. She is able to get up and down the field quickly and can also be dangerous in transition. Last season she booted in two goals and provided helpers on two other scoring plays. Who Returns No. Player Yr. GP Min. GAA Sv% 00 Lizzie Barnes So : Newcomers No. Player Hometown 0 KC Gordon Vienna, Va. 99 Beth Reed Indianapolis, Ind. Year after year, Navy has consistently put out a solid net minder. Amy Hakola was a three-time All- Patriot League goalkeeper, as was Kim Bonafede who led the Midshipmen to the program s first NCAA Tournament appearance in But with the graduation of keeper Haley Crain last spring, the starting goalkeeping duties are up for grabs heading into the fall. Goalkeeping is a position that is always open in the fall to whoever comes in and plays the best, said Gabarra. We ve had some surprises over the years and we ve had some players who fit in where we thought they would, but we re never really sure where people will fall until we start our preseason practice. A lot of it is fitness and working out and how they come in is based directly on what they ve done on their own over the summer. Sophomore Lizzie Barnes is the lone returnee from last year s stable, but the second-year player played just 158 minutes in 06, making four saves and surrendering one goal. Meanwhile, newcomer Beth Reed is expected to push Barnes for playing time. A two-time all-city selection, Reed was twice named All-State (Ind.). Lizzie certainly emerged as our top keeper over the spring, but Beth is coming in with a very strong background that could push Lizzie. 7

Among Navy s nonconference slate are a pair of four-team tournaments in which the Mids will play host, including opening weekend when Navy battles Davidson on Aug. 25 at 7:00 pm and Binghamton on the 27th at 3:00 pm. For the fourth-straight season, Navy will play national power Penn State who is coming off a semifinal appearance in the NCAA Women s College Cup. The series began in 2003 when the Midshipmen earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament and faced the Nittany Lions in the opening round. Penn State has won the three previous contests against Navy, though in 2004 PSU needed overtime to nip the Mids. The Oct. 26 meeting (7:00 pm) marks the first time Penn State will play the Mids at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. We ve always played extremely well at home, said Gabarra. Our stadium is top notch and we have a big home field advantage. Less travel is easier on your body and easier to adapt. We also have a great fan base and look forward to playing in front of them. Since opening its doors in 2001, the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility has provided Navy with a home field advantage. The Midshipmen own a (.837) record in games played at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility and have won eight or more games at home in four of the last five seasons. In Patriot League action, the Mids own a 13-4 (.765) record at the stadium. Additionally, the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility is a fan-friendly stadium. In 2005, 855 fans (third-largest crowd) showed came out to support the Mids in their season-opening victory over George Washington. In fact seven different games last season attracted crowds of better than 550, all of which fell into the top-10 crowds to watch a game at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Burd Elected Team Captain Rising senior Molly Burd has been elected by her peers to serve as team captain in Molly is taking her leadership role very seriously, said 14th-year Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. She has all the tools to succeed in the role of team captain she works very hard and she s very approachable if players have issues or concerns. She s very good about coming to me with things I need to handle, but she also has the respect of her peers to solve issues on her own. She s very conscious about the decisions she makes and how they affect every individual. Her goal is to win as a team, her goal is to have our team chemistry as strong as it ever was and to involve the other seniors in the decision making process, as well. A two-year letterwinner, Burd is coming off a 2005 campaign in which she garnered Second-Team All- Patriot League recognition as Navy s third-leading scorer. She turned in five goals and added seven assists, owning the league s fourth-best assists per game average (0.35). Navy s playmaker, Burd s presence on the field is an instrumental part of the Mids success. Burd joins an elite list of players (found on her bio page) who have served as Navy women s soccer captains, including four-time First-Team All-Patriot League defender and Academic All-American Nicole Aunapu (Class of 99), as well as three-time All- Patriot League goalkeeper and Navy all-time goalsagainst average record holder Kim Bonafede (Class of 04). Soccer Buzz Picks Navy Recruiting Class No. 1 in Patriot League Ranked No. 1 in the Patriot League by Soccer Buzz, Navy s Class of 10 is comprised of six players hailing from five different stats, including a pair from Florida and Indiana. Navy s incoming class is ranked 14th in the Mid-Atlantic Region and 81st nationally. It s a great class for us, said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. It s a little smaller than normal, but the players are not only talented, they also work extremely hard. It s sort of been our legacy for the last couple of years to recruit good soccer players, but at the same time players that mentally are so tough, work so hard and give everything they have to come out here and play. Our fitness and mentality have changed our team and made us better. The coaching staff is hopeful that all six members will be able to contribute at some point this season. One player in particular who has gained praise by the soccer prognosticators is Bradenton, Fla., native Cassie Barbaresi. A graduate of the IMG Soccer Academy, she gained notoriety for her play with the W-League in 2005 where she was earned all-league recognition playing among some of the best professional soccer players in the country. Cassie is going to be on paper one of the most talented players we ve ever had. We want to make sure we translate that onto the field, so now she s going to have to fit into our system, our style of players and our history. With the graduation of goalkeeper Haley Crain last spring, the goalkeeper position is open for that one player who wants it most. Newcomer Beth Reed, a product of Bishop Chatard in Indianapolis is sure to challenge for the position. Beth is a talented goalkeeper. She ll get used to the Div. I level pretty quickly and will press for playing time. Joining Barbaresi and Reed in the Class of 10 are Lauren Bresnahan, KC Gordon, Jen Grijalva, Shelly Moeller and Brittany White. Curran Looking to Join 100-Point Club Heading into the 2006 campaign, two-time All-Patriot League forward Meggie Curran is ranked fifth on the Mids all-time scoring list with 79 points on 26 goals and 27 assists. Curran is just 21 points from joining an elite list of players who have produced 100- career points Stacy Finley ( ) with 126, Justine Fisher ( ) with 114 and Cori Thornton ( ) with 109. A three-year letterwinner, Curran is one of three players to hold Navy s career assists record, while standing fifth in career goals. 8 UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

Stacy M. Finley Memorial Award On March 24, 2005, the Naval Academy lost a member of its family with the passing of Stacy Finley. Stacy enriched the lives of many through her gift of humor, her infectious laugh, her big grin and that favorite yellow pinnie. A truly unselfish player, teammate and friend, she often spoke of the team s achievements and shied away from her own personal success despite being one of the most decorated players in school and league history. Honored three times as an all-league player, she was twice named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and twice named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Mid-Atlantic Region team. She graduated as Navy s record holder in career points, goals and shots and owns single-season records in points, goals, assists and shots. In addition to her many honors on the field, she was a leader in the Hall and was honored multiple times for her academic achievments. Stacy graduated from the Naval Academy in 2004 with a degree in quantitative economics. Upon graduation, she was commissioned an Ensign into the United States Navy where she had planned a career in the supply corps. In 2005, the Finley family and the Naval Academy established the Ens. Stacy M. Finley Memorial Award which will presented annually to that senior member of the women s soccer team whose courage, will to win, dedication and love of her teammates will forever indure. The inaugural recipient of the Ens. Stacy M. Finley Memorial Award was team captain Lindsay Adlam, a four-year letterwinner who played alongside Stacy for two years. Lindsay Adlam 31

38 The Patriot League Today s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow s Leaders American University Bucknell University Colgate University College of the Holy Cross Lafayette College Lehigh University United States Military Academy United States Naval Academy Executive Director: Carolyn Schlie Femovich 3773 Corporate Pkwy., Ste. 190, Center Valley, PA Phone: (610) The Patriot League continually demonstrates that student-athletes can excel at both academics and athletics without sacrificing its high standards. The Patriot League s athletic success is achieved while its member institutions remain committed to its founding principle of admitting and graduating student-athletes that are academically representative of their class. In its second decade of combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men s and women s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham and Georgetown as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country. Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. In addition, the Patriot League finished first in the new NCAA Academic Progress Report (APR) among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid (combining with all eight of its full-time member institutions for an average of 984 out of 1,000). The APR is used to measure academic eligibility, retention and graduation of student-athletes. Patriot League student-athletes and teams continue to enjoy success at the national level, with opening round victories coming in several NCAA Championships, including consecutive wins in men s basketball, a final four appearance in men s lacrosse and a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship. The Patriot League s mission is simple, to provide successful competitive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society. During the year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following; Army s Julie Jorgensen (first-team soccer) and Bucknell s Matt Capece (third-team baseball) were named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team. 50 Patriot League student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams. In addition to automatic qualifiers, the Patriot League sent a second atlarge team to the NCAA I-AA football playoffs for the second-straight season, and to the NCAA Men s Golf Championships for the first time in League history. Bucknell s men s basketball program became the first Patriot League team to crack the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll. American s Keira Carlstrom turned in the highest finish in Patriot League history at the NCAA Women s Cross Country Championship, placing sixth overall. Four Patriot League men s lacrosse teams spent portions of the season ranked in the top 20 of the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Poll, with Navy spending the entire year in the top 15. Holy Cross won the Patriot League s first-ever NCAA postseason contest in women s lacrosse, defeating Le Moyne in the NCAA Play-In Game to advance to the NCAA Women s Lacrosse Tournament. Army s women s basketball program became the first from a service academy to advance to the NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Tournament. Lehigh s Matt McBride became the highest Patriot League student-athlete to be selected in the Major League Baseball College Draft, going in the second round (76th overall). 38 UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

42 ANNAPOLIS The City of Annapolis has been home to the Naval Academy for all but four years since the founding of the school in 1845 on the grounds of what originally was the Army s Fort Severn. The Academy moved its location to Newport, Rhode Island, from during the Civil War. ANCHORS AWEIGH Anchors Aweigh was written by Lt. Charles Zimmerman, musical director of the Naval Academy, in 1906, with the lyrics provided by Alfred H. Miles 06 as a fight song for the 1907 graduating class. The song made its debut at the 1906 Army-Navy game and when the Mids won, the song became traditional at the contest. BANCROFT HALL Named after the former Secretary of the Navy ( ) and founder of the Naval Academy George Bancroft, Bancroft Hall serves as the dormitory for the entire Brigade of Midshipmen. Its 33 acres of floor space and nearly five miles of hallways makes it one of the largest dorms in the world. BRIGADE OF MIDSHIPMEN The 4,000-member student body at the Naval Academy is called the Brigade of Midshipmen. The Brigade is organized into... 2 regiments 6 battalions 30 companies BILL THE GOAT The first recorded use of a goat as the mascot for Navy teams was in 1893 when an animal named El Cid (the Chief) was presented to the Brigade by officers of the USS New York. El Cid helped Navy to a 6-4 win over Army that year and a goat became the permanent mascot of the Academy in CO-ED Women were first admitted to the Naval Academy during the summer of Today, women comprise roughly 15 percent of the student body. COMMISSIONED OFFICERS When a student graduates from the Naval Academy, they have the option to enter either the Navy or the Marine Corps as an officer. If they choose to join the Navy, they are commissioned as Ensigns, while those entering the Marine Corps are given the rank of Second Lieutenant. JOHN PAUL JONES The crypt of John Paul Jones, considered America s first naval leader leader and hero, is located below the Naval Academy Chapel. The native of Scotland was born in 1747, and travelled to the colonies to assist America during the Revolutionary War. His ship never lost a battle as he reached a rank of captain in the Continental Navy. Jones died in 1792 in Paris, France, and was buried there. His remains were returned to the United States in 1905 and he was interred at the Naval Academy eight years later. MARINE CORPS Those officers entering the Marine Corps have the choice of service selecting one of the following fields... Aviation -- air command and control, anti-air warfare, aviation maintenance, aviation supply, pilot, naval flight officer. Ground -- armor*, artillery*, communications (information systems), engineering, financial management, infantry*, logistics, military police (* = not available to women) BLUE & GOLD Now, colleges from sea to sea May sing of colors true; But who has better right than we To hoist a symbol hue? For sailors brave in battle fair, Since fighting days of old, Have proved the sailor s right to wear The Navy Blue and Gold Four years together by the bay, Where severn joins the tide, Then by the service called away We re scattered far and wide; But still when two or three shall meet And old tales be retold From low to highest in the fleet We ll pledge the Blue and Gold. CLASS RANKS First-year students at the Naval Academy are referred to as plebes during their initial or Fourth Class year in school, while sophomores at Navy, members of the Third Class, are called youngsters. Juniors at the school are designated as Second Class, with seniors called Firsties in reference to their First Class year. 42 UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

43 MIDSHIPMAN The original 17th Century meaning of the word midshipsmen designated those men who stood watch amidships, or in the middle portion of a ship. The middle s was later dropped to give the current form of the word. Midshipmen were originally young boys who were apprenticed to sea captains to learn the trade. In the early days of the Navy, midshipmen were trained aboard ship until they were commissioned as ensigns. NAVY Graduates of the Naval Academy entering the Navy have the following service options available to them... Aviation -- flight officer, pilot Nuclear Propulsion -- ships, submarines* Restricted Line and Staff Corps -- civil engineering, cryptology, intelligence, maintenance, medicine, meteorology/oceanography, supply Special Operations -- explosive ordinance disposal, explosive ordinance management, mine countermeasures, operational diving and salvage, Navy SEALs* Surface Warfare -- conventional, nuclear powered Submarines* (* = not available to women) NICKNAME The official nickname for all of Navy s athletic teams is Midshipmen. Mids is an appropriate nickname, while Middie is inappropriate. N-STAR Members of varsity teams who qualify for the varsity letter receive an N-Star for their letter sweaters if they participate in a victory over Army in any sport-designated Star Game. The varsity N and corresponding N-Star were initiated during the early 1890s. SCHOOL COLORS Each class at the Naval Academy produced their own set of class colors until 1892 when Navy Blue and Gold were established as the official colors for the entire Naval Academy. SUMMER TRAINING Summers remain a busy and challenging time of year for midshipmen. Their initial tenure at the Naval Academy begins around July 1 prior to the start of the freshman year at the school with Plebe Summer. Instead of taking academic classes, plebes receive military indoctrination and learn basic seamanship and sailing. The summer following plebe year is spent aboard various ships to gain knowledge and experience of the workings of the Navy. Included in this time is a three-week cruise aboard either a 44-foot Naval Academy sailboat or a Yard Patrol craft traveling on the East Coast. Portions of the summer before the start of a second-class year is spent visiting bases of both the Navy and the Marine Corps. That leads up to the next summer when midshipmen join an operational unit of the Navy or Marine Corps for several weeks. In addition, rising firsties also begin to accept leadership roles at either the Naval Academy for plebe summer, the Naval Academy Prep School (Newport, R.I.) or aboard a yard patrol or sailing cruise. TECUMSEH Tecumseh is the Native American figurehead which has been facing Bancroft Hall since The statue originally was the figurehead of the USS Delaware and named after Tamanend, a Delaware chief. The name was later changed to Tecumseh after a Shawnee chieftain who lived from The original wooden statue was replaced after 50 years by the current bronze version. Tecumseh is painted prior to football games and during Commissioning Week he is adorned with the shoulder boards of a Navy ensign on one side and that of a Marine Corps second lieutenant on the other. THE YARD The Yard is another name for the grounds of the Naval Academy. Originally just 10 acres, The Yard has grown to a size of 338 acres. NAVAL ACADEMY LEADERSHIP VICE ADM. RODNEY P. The $4.5 million Glenn Warner Soccer Facility is a prime example the Naval Academy's commitment to excellence. One of the finest college soccer facilities in the nation, the 16,300-squarefoot facility is named after Navy s legendary men s coach Glenn Warner, who guided the Midshipmen to nine NCAA Tournament appearances, four Final Four appearances, one national championship, 28 winning seasons and a record of during his 30-year tenure. In a stretch from , Warner's teams put together a string of 48 regular-season victories without a defeat (70-6-3) and qualified for five-straight NCAA Tournaments. Warner, who produced 26 All-Americans, is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame and is a recipient of soccer's top award, The Honor Award. The cornerstone of the project is the Anders Hall of Honor, made possible by Maj. General William A. Anders, USAFR, and family, in appreciation of Warner and to recognize the leadership, character and commitment of former Naval Academy soccer players. The Anders Hall of Honor features 13 trophy cases and display areas of cherry cabinetry that depict Navy's storied soccer history. From former Navy soccer players who achieved excellence in military service and leadership, to past Navy All- Americans and team captains, the "Hall of Honor" pays tribute to former Midshipmen and their military, civilian and athletic accomplishments. The Anders Hall of Honor gives the coaching staff a place to meet, greet and entertain recruits and midshipmen candidates, while experiencing the rich tradition of Navy soccer. The home team wing highlights Navy's commitment to soccer and the future with two spacious team locker rooms, coaches offices and locker rooms, a fully-equipped training room, laundry and equipment rooms. The 1,300- square-foot men's and women's team locker rooms are equipped with custom-made wooden lockers for each athlete, a video projector and Glenn Warner Soccer Facility Single-Game Individual Records Most Goals N 4 by Amelia Sheveland vs. Marist, 9/13/02 O 3 by Anabel Jimenez, American, 10/14/03 Most Assists N 3 by Meggie Curran vs. La Salle, 8/28/05; Brigitte Fox vs. The Citadel, 10/24/04; Stephanie Parker vs. Holy Cross, 10/23/04; Stephanie Parker vs. Robert Morris, 11/4/02 O 3 by Simone Konig, American, 10/14/03 Most Points N 9 by Amelia Sheveland vs. Marist, 9/13/02 O 7 by Anabel Jimenez, American, 10/14/03 Most Shots N 10 by Stacy Finley vs. Mount St. Mary s, 9/12/03 O 7 by Savannah Rennels, Bucknell, 11/11/01 Most Saves N 8 by Kate Macfarlane vs. G.
