Last season Navy was tasked with replacing six starters, including the entire defensive unit. And while the Mids looked to have gotten off to a solid start, by the middle of the season, injuries, depth and experience began to catch up with them. By the start of the slate, Navy was without two of its top three forwards due to injury, while its rock, team captain Lindsay Adlam, also succumbed to injury. The Mids finished the year and missed the Tournament for a second year in a row. A year later, the factors that cut expectations short in 05 could be the very factors that will help the Mids succeed in 06 experience, depth and health. Twelve letterwinners, including seven starters, return for the Midshipmen, which features five members of the sophomore class. Perhaps the most exciting part of the 2006 team for Gabarra is its will to win and its likeness to the 2003 team that claimed the school s first Patriot League Women s Soccer Tournament title and earned an NCAA Tournament bid. This is probably the most talented team we ve had in a long time, soccer-wise, said Gabarra. But we also have a strong mentality that hasn t been present in the last couple of years. Physically we are fit, and as quick and agile as ever. We ve always had the talent to play the game, but the will to win has wavered a bit in the last couple of years based some different factors. That will to win should be back and present and should make a difference in us winning or losing the closer games. Gabarra traditionally looks to the senior class to step up and take on the leadership reigns. All four seniors were starters a year ago and got a taste of the ultimate success as freshmen on Navy s NCAA Tournament-bound squad. Senior leadership is inherent of the school. The first-class lead. That s the way the school works and that s the way our team has always worked. This class will be very good in the leadership role. They have strong personalities and they all have extremely strong work ethics. They work to exhaustion, they refuse to lose, they are extremely competitive individuals. Leading by example is one thing, but you have to be good leaders off the field as well. We expect them to be good leaders in the Hall and academically. They ve talked to each other a lot and figured out what they ve liked and what has worked in the past. They ve worked hard since they got here to do everything they can to make the team succeed. Forwards Who Returns No. Player Yr. GP SH G A P 3 Brigitte Fox Jr Kari Weniger Jr Kristen Laraway So Meggie Curran Sr Sam Schroth So Newcomers No. Player Hometown 19 Cassie Barbaresi Bradenton, Fla. Last season, Navy s forwards took a beating, losing a pair of players to season-ending knee injuries. Looking ahead to the season, the forward position is loaded with talent. The Mids return one of the premier players in the conference in two-time First-Team All-Patriot League forward Meggie Curran. An All-Mid-Atlantic Region selection a year ago, Curran paced the in points (32), assists and assists per game. She is only one of five players in program history to score 30-plus points in a season. She finished the 05 campaign with 14 assists, setting the Navy s single-season record, while tying the career record with 27. Nationally she ranked eighth in assists per game, posting 0.7 per outing. If not the top forward in the league last year, I think Meggie really wants to prove herself this year, said Gabarra. Not having had the success as a team the last two years, although she has still set a lot of individual records, I think she wants more than anything to have her team succeed at a level that we know we can reach. Navy is anxious to have junior Brigitte Fox return to the lineup. Fox, a member of the 2004 Soccer Buzz All-Mid-Atlantic Freshman Team, suffered a season-ending knee injury just four games into the 2005 season. As a freshman, Fox was the Mids second-leading scorer, producing 22 points on eight goals and six assists. It s great to have Brigitte back healthy. You can t match her speed and her ability to get behind opposing defenders. Kari Weniger, who scored two goals and added three assists, had her season cut short a year ago after also sustaining a knee injury. Finally, look for Cassie Barbaresi to make a statement in her freshman season. We want to give Cassie creative freedom up top. She s a play maker, but an attacking forward as well, so we have to find the right niche for her. 6 UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY

3 2006 Navy Women s Soccer Outlook Midfielders Defenders Goalkeepers Who Returns No. Player Yr. GP SH G A P 2 Molly Burd Sr CiAnna Weikle So Katie Traster Jr Carmen Myers Sr Julie Reynolds So Carey Young So Lindsay Parker Jr Newcomers No. Player Hometown 11 Jen Grijalva Pleasonton, Calif. 16 Shelly Moeller Milford, Ohio 21 Brittany White Carmel, Ind. Navy has plenty of experience in its midfielder corps, including team captain Molly Burd who garnered Second-Team All- kudos in Burd serves as the Mids play maker, the organizer of their offense. Last season, Burd produced 17 points on five goals and seven assists as Navy s third-leading scorer. Molly is our playmaker. She scored some very important goals in big games the last couple of years. She ll have more freedom to play make with the forwards we have this year. She had a really good spring and is as fit as she has ever been. Julie Reynolds and CiAnna Weikle were both major contributors in the midfield as rookies a year ago. Reynolds, who started all 20 games last season, is relentless with her on-the-ball pressure and is constantly looking to push the Mids forward. She is one of the most well-rounded performers on the Navy roster. Julie Reynolds was the heart and soul of our center midfield last year and will return. We haven t had a player play the kind of the minutes with the intensity and drive that she gives us. Weikle played in every game as a freshman where she was credited with a pair of assists. Like Reynolds, Weikle seeks the opportunity to dominate the midfield. Another veteran player in the midfield is senior Carmen Myers. A three-year letterwinner, Myers experience and leadership will play a vital role in Navy s organization in the midfield. She has played in 63 games over her three seasons, producing 21 points on seven goals and seven assists. Who Returns No. Player Yr. GP SH G A P 6 Elise McCaskey So Kristi Coonfare Sr Lauren Griebel Jr Jenn Dunbar So Newcomers No. Player Hometown 5 Lauren Bresnahan Weston, Fla. Navy s defensive unit will certainly take a hit with the loss of four-year starter Lindsay Adlam who graduated in the spring. However, the Mids were forced to regroup midway through the season after Adlam suffered a broken foot in the opener against American. The Navy coaching staff will look to Kristi Coonfare to spearhead the defensive efforts this fall. Coonfare is a three-year letterwinner who has started eight or more games in each of her first three seasons. She was part of a defensive unit that surrendered 1.22 goals per game a year ago, the sixthlowest goals-against average in program history. Last year she opened the season injured, however, she enters the fall healthy and ready to take on the responsibility of being the defensive anchor. Kristi will emerge as our defensive leader. We missed her defensive presence in the first couple of games last year when she hadn t returned from injury. That became very apparent when she came back and we relied upon her defensive presence to boost us. A starter in 19 of the 20 contests a year ago, second-year standout Elise McCaskey had an exceptional first season playing in the back, a position she was not accustomed to playing. Described by Gabarra as the stalwart of the Mids defense, McCaskey is a terrific one-on-one defender who is explosive and dangerous in transition. Elise was one of our best one-vs.-one defenders last year as a freshman having never playing back there before. I m very excited to see the level she can reach this year. Junior Lauren Griebel has started 27 of the 39 contests in which she has played over the last two years and was rewarded last season by being named to the Second Team. She is able to get up and down the field quickly and can also be dangerous in transition. Last season she booted in two goals and provided helpers on two other scoring plays. Who Returns No. Player Yr. GP Min. GAA Sv% 00 Lizzie Barnes So : Newcomers No. Player Hometown 0 KC Gordon Vienna, Va. 99 Beth Reed Indianapolis, Ind. Year after year, Navy has consistently put out a solid net minder. Amy Hakola was a three-time All- goalkeeper, as was Kim Bonafede who led the Midshipmen to the program s first NCAA Tournament appearance in But with the graduation of keeper Haley Crain last spring, the starting goalkeeping duties are up for grabs heading into the fall. Goalkeeping is a position that is always open in the fall to whoever comes in and plays the best, said Gabarra. We ve had some surprises over the years and we ve had some players who fit in where we thought they would, but we re never really sure where people will fall until we start our preseason practice. A lot of it is fitness and working out and how they come in is based directly on what they ve done on their own over the summer. Sophomore Lizzie Barnes is the lone returnee from last year s stable, but the second-year player played just 158 minutes in 06, making four saves and surrendering one goal. Meanwhile, newcomer Beth Reed is expected to push Barnes for playing time. A two-time all-city selection, Reed was twice named All-State (Ind.). Lizzie certainly emerged as our top keeper over the spring, but Beth is coming in with a very strong background that could push Lizzie. 7

Among Navy s nonconference slate are a pair of four-team tournaments in which the Mids will play host, including opening weekend when Navy battles Davidson on Aug. 25 at 7:00 pm and Binghamton on the 27th at 3:00 pm. For the fourth-straight season, Navy will play national power Penn State who is coming off a semifinal appearance in the NCAA Women s College Cup. The series began in 2003 when the Midshipmen earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament and faced the Nittany Lions in the opening round. Penn State has won the three previous contests against Navy, though in 2004 PSU needed overtime to nip the Mids. The Oct. 26 meeting (7:00 pm) marks the first time Penn State will play the Mids at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. We ve always played extremely well at home, said Gabarra. Our stadium is top notch and we have a big home field advantage. Less travel is easier on your body and easier to adapt. We also have a great fan base and look forward to playing in front of them. Since opening its doors in 2001, the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility has provided Navy with a home field advantage. The Midshipmen own a (.837) record in games played at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility and have won eight or more games at home in four of the last five seasons. In Patriot League action, the Mids own a 13-4 (.765) record at the stadium. Additionally, the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility is a fan-friendly stadium. In 2005, 855 fans (third-largest crowd) showed came out to support the Mids in their season-opening victory over George Washington. In fact seven different games last season attracted crowds of better than 550, all of which fell into the top-10 crowds to watch a game at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. Burd Elected Team Captain Rising senior Molly Burd has been elected by her peers to serve as team captain in Molly is taking her leadership role very seriously, said 14th-year Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. She has all the tools to succeed in the role of team captain she works very hard and she s very approachable if players have issues or concerns. She s very good about coming to me with things I need to handle, but she also has the respect of her peers to solve issues on her own. She s very conscious about the decisions she makes and how they affect every individual. Her goal is to win as a team, her goal is to have our team chemistry as strong as it ever was and to involve the other seniors in the decision making process, as well. A two-year letterwinner, Burd is coming off a 2005 campaign in which she garnered Second-Team All- recognition as Navy s third-leading scorer. She turned in five goals and added seven assists, owning the league s fourth-best assists per game average (0.35). Navy s playmaker, Burd s presence on the field is an instrumental part of the Mids success. Burd joins an elite list of players (found on her bio page) who have served as Navy women s soccer captains, including four-time First-Team All-Patriot League defender and Academic All-American Nicole Aunapu (Class of 99), as well as three-time All- goalkeeper and Navy all-time goalsagainst average record holder Kim Bonafede (Class of 04). Soccer Buzz Picks Navy Recruiting Class No. 1 in Ranked No. 1 in the by Soccer Buzz, Navy s Class of 10 is comprised of six players hailing from five different stats, including a pair from Florida and Indiana. Navy s incoming class is ranked 14th in the Mid-Atlantic Region and 81st nationally. It s a great class for us, said Navy head coach Carin Gabarra. It s a little smaller than normal, but the players are not only talented, they also work extremely hard. It s sort of been our legacy for the last couple of years to recruit good soccer players, but at the same time players that mentally are so tough, work so hard and give everything they have to come out here and play. Our fitness and mentality have changed our team and made us better. The coaching staff is hopeful that all six members will be able to contribute at some point this season. One player in particular who has gained praise by the soccer prognosticators is Bradenton, Fla., native Cassie Barbaresi. A graduate of the IMG Soccer Academy, she gained notoriety for her play with the W-League in 2005 where she was earned all-league recognition playing among some of the best professional soccer players in the country. Cassie is going to be on paper one of the most talented players we ve ever had. We want to make sure we translate that onto the field, so now she s going to have to fit into our system, our style of players and our history. With the graduation of goalkeeper Haley Crain last spring, the goalkeeper position is open for that one player who wants it most. Newcomer Beth Reed, a product of Bishop Chatard in Indianapolis is sure to challenge for the position. Beth is a talented goalkeeper. She ll get used to the Div. I level pretty quickly and will press for playing time. Joining Barbaresi and Reed in the Class of 10 are Lauren Bresnahan, KC Gordon, Jen Grijalva, Shelly Moeller and Brittany White. Curran Looking to Join 100-Point Club Heading into the 2006 campaign, two-time All-Patriot League forward Meggie Curran is ranked fifth on the Mids all-time scoring list with 79 points on 26 goals and 27 assists. Curran is just 21 points from joining an elite list of players who have produced 100- career points Stacy Finley ( ) with 126, Justine Fisher ( ) with 114 and Cori Thornton ( ) with 109. A three-year letterwinner, Curran is one of three players to hold Navy s career assists record, while standing fifth in career goals. 8 UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY
