Kenmore Soccer News Volume 8, Number 5 Kenmore/Tonawanda, New York June 2014 Register for Summer Camp see page 2 Kenmore Soccer Participates at FC Buffalo Home Opener Kenmore Soccer was pleased to participate in the FC Buffalo home opener versus AFC Cleveland on Sunday May 18th. A capacity crowd watched a high-energy match, which resulted in a 1-1 tie on Kenmore Soccer Day. Over 100 Kenmore Soccer players and their families were there to cheer on our home side, who had defeated the Erie Admirals just 2 days earlier in their initial 2014 match. The Under 10 Kenmore Vipers and Under 10 Kenmore Blue Devils walked onto the field with the teams during players introductions, served as ball boys during the match, and played a 12 minute halftime game. Our thanks to FC Buffalo for giving us the opportunity for Kenmore Soccer Day. This was a pilot project, as it was their initial attempt at combining with a youth soccer club for special activities during a match. Based on the success of the day, they have solicited several other clubs for similar events for the remainder of the year. Based on the feedback we had from our players and parents, we know that FC Buffalo gained some new supporters who will be back to enjoy future games this season. 1

Summer Soccer Camp!!! School will be on the summer break soon, and outdoor activities will be well underway. With that in mind, plans are complete for our annual Summer Soccer Camp. As in past years, the camp will function through the Community Education office of the Kenmore- Tonawanda Union Free School District. This year s camp will be held from Monday July 7th through Friday July 11th, from 9:00am to Noon each day. The camp is open to all players ages 7 through 13 (born after 7/31/2000 and before 8/1/2007). We had a record number of campers last year, and we are looking forward to this year's session. The camp will be led by Nick DeMarsh, the Director of Coaching for Kenmore Soccer and head Women s Soccer Coach at Buffalo State College. The staff will include Prisco Houndanon, the Director of the Kenmore Soccer Academy; Brian Knapp, Assistant Women s Coach at Buffalo State College and a former Division 1 player at the University of Buffalo; Tom Karanas, Assistant Men s coach at Buffalo State College; and several local college and amateur players. Registration is now open through the Club website at To register, simply login to your account, and click on the link to Register Now for new programs available for your child, and then select Summer Camp. Independent Health Flexfit and personalbest! can be used by those with those programs. Others can pay on-line with their credit card, or can mail a check. Registration can also be done through the Community Education office, using the Spring/Summer catalog application process. Instructions for registering through Community Education are listed in the catalog. Based on last year s camp, and the growth of our programs, we are expecting to have another record number of campers. We encourage you to register as soon as possible so we can adequately plan, and ensure our camp continues to be the best in our community. Registering for On-line registration for the season will open on June 15th. We have lots of new programs for next season, including an expansion of our Academy, and a Futsal League which will run on Sunday afternoons and weekday evenings, with our players forming their own 8 player teams. Stay tuned for more information. 2

Futsal League Coming in Fall/Winter Kenmore Soccer is pleased to announce that we are assisting in organizing a structured Futsal League that will operate next season in the Buffalo State Sports Arena. The league will consist of two 10 game sessions, one operating from November through January, and the second session running from February through April. Futsal is the indoor soccer game that is played throughout the entire world, except for North America. There are professional teams in many countries, that play in Futsal arenas. The game is played on a hardwood floor using a ball that is slightly weighted and padded, so that it minimizes the ability to get loft on the ball, Consequently, the game emphasizes passing and movement without the ball. Many of the world s greatest soccer players began their career by playing Futsal. A Futsal Field Many of our younger players have participated in the Buffalo State Futsal Tournament, so they are already familiar with the fast pace of this 5v5 game. It is an outstanding learning tool that self-teaches while you are having fun. The cost is estimated at $495/team per 10 game session, which means it will be significantly less expensive than the current costs at the local indoor facilities. The League will be open to all area Clubs, so we will be encouraging our coaches to organize teams as early as possible once we have our registration process underway. More details will be shared as the planning proceeds. 3

Kenmore Soccer Player Selected for Regional ODP Competition Ruth Riggie, a member of the Under 14 Kenmore Ambush, was recently selected for the New York State West Olympic Development Tournament Team, and will be traveling to New Jersey in June to compete in matches versus ODP teams from 15 other state associations. Ruth has been a member of Kenmore Soccer since she was 8 years old, and will be enrolling at Mt. St. Mary Academy this fall. Her ODP selection was particularly rewarding for her, as she has been battling a significant hip injury in recent months, which has severely limited her ability to train and play. Congratulations Ruth we are very proud of your accomplishment, and wish you well in the upcoming competition, as well as in your recovery as you prepare for scholastic play this fall. Other Summer Camp Options As in past years, we get inquiries about summer soccer camp options, especially for those that are too old for our Kenmore Soccer Camp. We are pleased to make two recommendations: Buffalo State Youth Soccer Camp the week of July 21st-25th at Buffalo State College from 9:00am-4:00pm for ages 8 through 16. Cost is $120 Buffalo State College ID Camp for Girls in high school as of September This is a residential camp to be held on August 14th-15th. More information on both camps is available by contacting Ken Voght at voght@msn.com. Trivia Question (answer on page 8) What men s player has appeared in more international matches than any other player in history? 4

Behavior on the Sideline We Need to Get Better What country has the worst sports parents? That s right, the United States, where over 60% of all parents report that they have seen poor behavior from parents at youth sporting events. We should be embarrassed by that, but most parents are in denial with a well, at least I am not one of them. But let s think about that, because you probably are part of the problem, or may be on the cusp of becoming part of the problem. We all need to periodically assess our behavior and attitudes on the sidelines. Take a step back, observe yourself, and see if you are following the 7 fundamental rules below. Your children are playing soccer for fun. Everyone wants you to enjoy the great game of soccer. This information is being provided in an effort to assist you and your children in gaining the maximum benefit possible from these soccer games. Below are some simple rules you should observe. PLEASE CONSIDER THEM CAREFULLY! Do not shout instructions to your child. This only causes confusion, since the coach has already instructed your child on how to play. If you do shout instructions, your child will probably try to please you and the coach at the same time. In trying to do two things at one time, the child becomes unable to handle his loyalties and ends up pleasing neither parent nor coach. Cheer for your child when he/she plays the ball well. However, remember that your child is a member of a team. Let the other players know you support them too. Suffer in silence (or moan softly) whenever something occurs that goes against your child's team. A display of anger may inflame a delicate situation resulting in embarrassment for you or your child. Some parents embarrass their own children by making a spectacle of themselves. Do not run up and down the sidelines. Find a comfortable place to sit down or stand, relax and enjoy the match. Do not shout insults or verbally abuse the referee. It's hard for a child to learn respect for the referee or other officials when their parents set a poor example. The referee can and will stop the match if the crowd becomes discourteous. Aid the team parent by helping provide refreshments at halftime and after the game is over. Set the tone for good sportsmanship by adopting a positive attitude if your team loses. Compliment your child upon his/her good plays and ignore the mistakes. Your child will be happy you noticed his good qualities. A neighboring Club had 4 coaches accused of referee assault last year, and 12 parent ejections. We are proud that we are not that Club, but we need to be vigilant to ensure we are not sliding in that direction. REMEMBER--your child will forget about today's game. Next week he/she will probably have forgotten the score. However, both of you will remember the good time the child had playing the most popular sport in the world. 5

Rethinking the Cost of Kids Sports; Free-spending Parents Can Kill Their Child's Enthusiasm by William Hageman, Tribune Newspapers The days of furthering a kid's athletic career by telling him to go play outside are ancient history. Today, sports is big business, and moms and dads act accordingly. There are travel teams for their kids to play on, club memberships, clinics, individual coaching, expensive equipment. Parents are spending thousands of dollars a year -- just the travel expenses for youth sports is $7 billion a year, according to a recent report from CNBC -- on kids' sports careers. But that investment may be misguided, according to a new study from Utah State University's Families in Sport Lab. Researchers have found that the more parents spend on youth sports, the more likely their kids are to lose interest. There's nothing worse than a sullen 11-year-old goalie. "The more money folks are investing, the higher pressure kids are perceiving," says Travis Dorsch, an assistant professor in Utah State's department of family, consumer and human development. "More pressure means less enjoyment. As kids enjoy sports less, their motivation goes down. (So) the indirect effect is, yes, spending more money and less motivation." Parents justify their financial outlay by saying they're increasing the child's chances for a college scholarship or, down the line, a lucrative professional career. But a look at the numbers shows they may be deluding themselves. According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, only about 2 percent of high school athletes receive athletic scholarships to college. Even fewer move on to the professional ranks. For example, just 11.6 percent of college baseball players go on to minor or major leagues. The figures for athletes in other sports are even smaller: 1.7 percent of participants in football make the pros, 1.2 percent in men's basketball and 0.9 percent in women's basketball. Further, the amount of scholarship money awarded is less than one might imagine. A 2008 analysis by The New York Times found the typical athletic scholarship valued at $10,409. Yes, $10,000 is something. But the College Board reports that the cost of an in-state public college education for the academic year averaged $22,826. The Utah State study involved 163 families. Parents were surveyed on family demographic variables, gross household income and investment levels in youth sports participation. The kids were asked about parental pressure, their own enjoyment and their plans to future participation. The results indicated that the more money parents invest, the more pressure the kids perceive. The problem, Dorsch believes, is in the system. Youth sports in U.S. are not set up for participation's sake or fitness or -- gasp -- fun, but to transform a young athlete into the best, to make that elite team, to reach the top of the pyramid. "Why do we do this whole youth sport industry thing in general?" he asks. "I think it's to help kids acquire life skills and have fun. If the goal is to get them to participate longer -- the dropout rates peak at 11, 12, 13 years old, unfortunately -- we want them to be motivated and enjoy the experience. We should not do things that pressure them out of sport." A better parental approach would help, he says. "If you miss a game, and your kid comes home, what's the first question most parents ask? 'Did you win?' That's always first. And that's implicitly what the child is perceiving," Dorsch says. "If we can teach parents to ask, 'Did you have fun?' 'What did you learn?' 'Are you excited about next time?' and make statements like, 'I love watching you play,' those things go a long way in creating motivation in our children." Besides which, all that money parents are spending might be better invested in a college savings fund. 7
