1 Kenmore Soccer News Volume 11, Number 3 Kenmore/Tonawanda, New York March 2018 The snow has melted (at least for now), and it has motivated us to announce our plans for our 2018 Summer Soccer Camp. Although we have not changed the outstanding staff that we will have, consisting of area college coaches and players, we have made three major changes for this year: First, we have a new venue. The 2018 Kenmore Soccer Summer Camp will be held at Kenmore East High School. This will provide larger space, with 4 grass fields available for camp. Second, although we will still offer two camps Beginner and Advanced, they will be held concurrently. Both camps will operate from June 25th-29th between 9:00am and Noon at Kenmore East. With the additional field space, we will be able to accommodate more campers and sessions at the same time. Finally, we have been able to reduce the camp price to $65. In an era when everything seems to cost more, we have worked hard to bring this cost down. Registration for the Summer Soccer Camp can be done on-line. Just log into your account and you should see that there is a new program available. When you click on that button, Summer Soccer Camp should be a new option for you. We look forward to this season s camp. 2 Academy Why? The Kenmore Soccer Academy program was created as a vehicle to provide intensive training in individual skills such as dribbling, passing, receiving, and shooting. The need for this was twofold: 1) Players on the same team all have different skill levels, so including extensive work on individual skills at team sessions is a challenge, and 2) With the limited amount of time for team training, coaches generally need to focus on tactical issues, and not technical ones. Kenmore Soccer was the area s first Club to offer an Academy program., and we are still the only Club that provides it at no additional cost for both KidsPlay and Travel players. In fact, we are also the only Club that has a structured Academy program that operates on a regular schedule. Over the years, we have expanded the Academy into two components, each with its own Director: Our regular Academy is for players who are between ages 7 and 12. It is directed by Prisco Houndanon, a former collegiate player and Assistant Men s coach at Buffalo State College. Our Advanced Academy is for players ages 13 and above. It is directed by Francesco Cardillo and Nick DeMarsh, current coaches at Buffalo State. Most players loathe working on individual skills, primarily because it is not perceived to be fun. In fact, those are the same players who arrive at team training and ask are we going to scrimmage? They want to play, but they don t want to put in the work required to become a better player. The simple fact is that training is where you become a better player, and games are where your coach can determine what the team and players need to work on. In other words, games are a means to assess our individual and team training. So, back to the initial question of the article Academy Why? If you want to become a better player, then you need to improve your skills. Standing on a soccer field and kicking the ball into the net for 10 minutes (or standing in a gymnasium and kicking the ball into the wall for 10 minutes), will not improve your skills. Yet, that is exactly how many players view training. When they arrive for a session, do they juggle, dribble, practice ball movements or do they kick the ball into the net or against the wall? Academy sessions provide what the players need, but don t want to do work on individual skills. Good players, from college level to the pros, spend endless hours each week on building their skills. If you are not getting better, you need to attend Academy. In a way it is just like playing the piano. You can sit down and play Chopsticks every day, or you can practice scales and chords. One may get you to Carnegie Hall. The other will not even make you a piano player. 2

3 Kenmore Soccer Alumnus Excels in Track Retired Kenmore Soccer player Christina Wende hung up her soccer cleats after last season in order to concentrate on her track/field career. Although we miss her, that has proven to be a wise decision, as the current indoor track season has seen her garner headlines. At a recent meet, Wende came in first place in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.63 seconds, and leapt distances of 18 feet, 2 inches in the long jump and 38-7 in the triple jump to finish as the event's only triple-winner. All three results were also the top mark in Western New York for the season, which made Christina the Buffalo News Prep Talk Female Athlete of the Week. We did notice that she choose to wear a soccer sweatshirt for her track picture below, so we assume she must miss us as much as we miss her! Kenmore Soccer Player Sets Swimming Record Congratulations to Ben Harper from the 19U Boys on setting new high school swimming records in the 50 freestyle. Ben s time of broke a Kenmore East school record of set in

4 Update on Outdoor Schedules As we move into March and near the end of the indoor schedules that are posted to the web site, the inevitable questions arise about outdoor schedules. Since it will be at least 4-6 weeks before we have league games schedules, here are just a few items to help keep everyone current: We will be using 6 different field locations this summer Kenmore East High School, Adams Field (turf), Edison Elementary School, Irvington Park, Ellicott Creek Park, and Coyer Field (Buffalo State College). Kenmore East High School will be the site of one full field, and three small-sided fields for 9-12 year old teams. Team Training and Academy sessions will be scheduled around games, with most training occurring at Kenmore East and Edison. Summer Camp will be the week of June 25th-29th at Kenmore East. Small-sided play has changed this season in order to meet new mandates imposed by U.S. Soccer. Fields have been reduced in size, and the goalposts are now mandated to be no more than 6.5 by 18.5 feet for 10 and Under, and 7 by 21 feet for 11/12 and Under. Kenmore Soccer has been in compliance with the goal size since 2016, but our fields will be slightly smaller than last season. As with the school gymnasiums, we are guests in the use of fields. Our fields are the property of the Town of Tonawanda, Kenmore-Tonawanda schools, Erie County, and the State of New York. Please remember that we are guests, and although we pay for usage, we need to respect their condition and take steps to help maintain them by cleaning up after each use. Outdoor training will not begin before April 23rd in order to allow fields to dry and be firm. The Buffalo/WNY Junior Soccer League will not begin game play until the week of May 7th. The 10 and Under age group will double up on games during the first two weeks, with games on Wednesdays and Fridays. This is being done in order to allow them to complete play well before the end of July. Apparel Orders Our Joma apparel is shown on the web site, with a link for placing an order. Orders are placed on the 1st and 15th of each month and parents are invoiced through the web site. 4

5 Registration Open for Season Registration for the season remains open on-line through our web site at As with past years, we guaranteed placement on the Kenmore Soccer travel team for all returning players who registered by July 15th. Many teams are full at this point, but we will try to accommodate as many players as possible. This season sees a continuation of our Academy programs, and an expansion of Futsal. In conjunction with our affiliate club in Canada, the Elite Development Academy, we will be offering expanded indoor futsal programs with international competition. We will also be expanding coaching education. The season is also seeing a change in our uniform kit, as our former Inaria kits are being phased out and replaced by new Joma kits. We have a significant number of new players who have already joined Kenmore Soccer for , and we hope to have as many of our current players back as possible, as we continue to grow the community s soccer program. Important Reminder You must accept your roster offer in order to be placed on a Kenmore Soccer team for the season. United FC Girls Capture Winter Session at Sahlen s Congratulations to the Kenmore United FC girls on claiming the championship of the 17/18/19 age group in the Sahlen s Winter B session.
