4 State of Futsal in the USA Youth futsal Each year additional tournaments and leagues are being created to meet the growing demand Like soccer, there are competing organizations within youth Futsal. US Futsal Federation and US Youth Futsal each sanction local leagues, along with regional and national tournament competitions. Youth national teams are entering their 3 rd year of existence for both boys and girls Professional Futsal Semi-professional league (Major League Futsal) is entering their 2 nd year with dozens of teams in USA, Mexico, and Canada Professional Futsal League (PFL) is receiving massive financial backing with major European and South American clubs, NBA owners, and additional Asian investors launching franchises 4

6 Academy Structure Prime futsal season for most clubs is November through February A number of academies such as FutsalRVA (VA), City Futsal (TX), DCFA (MD) and Carolina Futsal (NC) offer year round programs Smaller programs such as Sporting Maryland (MD) and South Jersey Elite Futsal (NJ) only focus on the prime futsal season The proposed 44 session, mid-august to late February approach is feasible and blends the benefits of ongoing technical training with a defined tournament season to wrap up the season 6

7 Player Selection Tryouts are necessary and must be run well in advance of the start of the season. For FCV players that are required/encouraged to participate this is less critical. People may or may not want to sign up based on whether their kid makes the A, B team. For the competitive component of the program it makes sense to field only a single team per gender/age group combination. Price point is very important! People are already paying thousands of dollars for outdoor and you will struggle to create broad appeal if the program is in excess of $1,000 (excluding any additional fees for competitive teams like tournaments) Additionally, the Northern Virginia market is immature in terms of futsal programs so parents may balk at a high cost of entry. 7

One hour and fifteen minutes for ages U-9-12 and 1.5 hours for age U-13-18) once a week during the off season and twice a week during tournament season. We send offers and then place players on teams. All outside players have to pay $150 registration fee and then $100 in 6 payments 9

11 Academy Structure Additional tournaments There are numerous additional tournaments that some teams may want to play in (Maryland State Cup, USYF Atlantic Regionals, etc.) Teams would select additional tournaments in advance of the tournament season and a per player fee would be charged to cover the complete costs of the tournaments (as a package). Each team may have a different number of events (or different mix of events) which does introduce some modest level of additional overhead bookkeeping and organization. Payment would be managed through FCV s online payment website For most teams the additional tournament fees would be $100 to $250 dollars per player 11

13 Leagues League schedule Local leagues are organized around two sessions ( Richie Eaton will run league) Session 1 generally runs from late November through mid-january. Session 1 is usually eight weeks long with teams playing one game per weekend Session 2 goes from late January to early/mid March. Session 2 may run 6 to 8 weeks Why to avoid league play In general, but especially in Northern VA, the quality of the teams in local leagues varies widely. Many games are blow outs and because there are games every week schedules become difficult for older teams (U13 and up) given that outdoor play often continues into December and January Many teams are increasing focusing on attending additional tournaments as an alternative to league play 13

14 Final Details Financial analysis of the academy (separate document) details the economics of the proposed venture A number of important decisions and assumptions underlie the model and are presented over the next few slides 14

15 Academy Details Assuming 12 teams with each team averaging 9 players. That assumes that about 2/3 of age groups won t have enough players to form a team Two largest costs are court space and coaching time. Court space must be committed to months in advance so going with an assumption of 12 teams versus a full 18 hedges risk. It is possible to get small allotments of space here and there in the event that you are able to form more than 12 teams. Each team will have different needs and level of commitment. Some teams will want to do numerous tournaments and others may only do state cup. Consequently the academy package focuses on training only. League and tournament costs will be handled on a team by team basis. Puma Futsal kit (light and dark training jerseys, shorts, socks) is a separate cost (approximately $55-$60). 15
