Tie: empate Goalie/goalkeeper: portero to endanger: poner en peligro feint: finta Overcome: superar to gain: obtener patrol: ronda, merodea leap: salto UNIT 8: HANDBALL 1. INTRODUCCTION Handball is a fast-paced game involving two teams of seven players who pass, throw, catch and dribble a small ball with their hands while trying to score goals. The team with the most goals wins the game. A game consists of two 30-minute halves with a 10- minute half-time break. Handball is one of the most popular sports in Europe (after soccer). The competition is regulated by the International Handball Federation (I.H.F). 2. TEAM HANDBALL BASIC RULES THE BASICS The Playing Court: The court measures 20 meters by 40 meters. The goal area (6 meter line) Goal line. Goal throw Penalty line: (7 meter line) Nine meter line: (the broken semi-circle line). Side-line: No one except the goalie is allowed to stand in the goal area. Players may jump into the area if the ball is released before landing in the area. Number of Players: There are seven players on each team (six court players and one goalie). A maximum of 12 players may dress and participate in a game for each team. 1
Substitutes may enter the game at any time through own substitution area as long as the player they are replacing has left the court. Referees: There are two referees, a court referee and a goal line referee. Referees have complete authority. Duration of the Game: the game consists of two, 30 minute halves with 10 minute half-time. This is running time except for injury or one team time-out per half. The teams change benches at half-time. The game ends in a tie unless the game demands a winner. (Overtime consists of two, 5 minute periods). Passive Play: It is illegal to keep the ball in a team's possession without making a recognizable attempt to attack and to try to score. In other words, a team cannot stall (free-throw awarded to the other team). Throw-Off: A throw-off is taken by the team that wins the coin toss and chooses to start the game with the ball. Each team must be in its own half of the court with the defense 3 meters away from the ball. Following a whistle, the ball is passed from the center court to a teammate and the play begins. Throw-off is repeated after every goal scored and after half-time. Scoring: A goal is scored when the entire ball crosses the goal line inside the goal. A goal may be scored from any throw (free-throw, throw-in, throw-off, and goal-throw). Playing the Ball A player is allowed... To run with the ball for 3 steps To hold the ball for 3 seconds Unlimited dribble with 3 steps allowed before and after dribbling (no doubledribble). 2
A player is NOT allowed... To endanger an opponent with the ball To pull, hit or punch the ball out of the hands of an opponent. To contact the ball below the knee. To throw oneself the floor for a rolling or stationary ball. Defending the opponent: Contact is limited to the torso only. Arms or legs may not be used to obstruct an opponent. Holding, pushing, hitting, running or jumping into an opponent are all fouls. Throw-In: A throw-in is awarded when the ball goes out of bounds on the side line or when the ball is last touched by a defensive player (excluding the goalie) and goes out of bounds over the end line. Free-Throw: For a minor foul or violation, a free-throw is awarded to the opponent at the exact spot it took place. If the foul or violation occurs between the goal area line and the 9 meter line, the throw is taken from the nearest post outside the 9-meter line. The thrower must keep one foot in contact with the floor, then pass or shoot. 7 Meter Throw/penalty: The 7 meter throw is awarded when... A foul destroys a clear chance to score. The goalie carries the ball back into his or her own goal area. A court player intentionally plays the ball to his or her own goalie in the goal area and the goalie touches the ball. A defensive player enters his or her goal area to gain advantage over an attacking player in possession of the ball. Disciplinary sanctions Warning: Yellow card given to player for an infraction of the rules. Suspension: if the player continues to act in this way, the referee can punish him or her with suspension from the game for two minutes. 3
Disqualification: the third time the same player is suspended. The disqualified player cannot return to play, but he or she can be replaced by another player after two minutes Exclusion (red card): in the event of a very serious violation of the rules, the referee will punish the player with a red card. The player's team will have to play with one player less for the rest of the game. 3. PLAYING POSITIONS: Goalkeeper: the player who defends the goal with just about every part of the body! Centre or play maker: a creative player who directs the game in both, defence and attack. Left and right back: usually the tallest players on the team. Left and right wingers: the fastest players who patrol the sides of the court. Pivot: the strongest player who play in the centre of the attack Substitutes substitution is allowed at any moment, without limit and without time stoppage. There are seven substitutes on the side-lines for each side. 4. GAMES PHASES Attacking: it takes place when the team has the ball. Defence: it takes place when the other team don t have the possession of the ball. Counterattack (transition to attack): it takes place when a team recover the possession and tries a quick attack. They go from defence to attack. Backing up (transition to denfence): it takes when a team lost the possession the ball, and tries to stop the counterback. 4
5. INDIVIDUAL TECHNICAL MOVES Feint: move by the attacking player with the objective of losing his or her marker. The feint can be: Without the ball: losing a marker to receive the ball With the ball: feint pass, feint shot or feint movement. Shot: action of attacking player with the objective of throwing the ball to the goal. The most effective shots are: Standing shot. Hip shot: Rectify shot You can shot in place, while jumping (vertical jump shoot, stride jump shoot) or while falling Pass and catch the ball: Standing pass or overhead pass: Pronation pass Bounce pass You can pass the ball in motionless or in motion. 6. SYSTEMS OF PLAYING Attacking Open spaces make it easier for the attacking team to score. If the circulation of the ball is smart and quick the defenders will find some difficulties in closing those spaces. We can use some tactics for attacking: - Pass and go: the player who has the ball, passes and then he runs for getting a better position towards the goal. 5
- Attacking in waves: the attacker uses the space left by his or her marker, which is protected by a nearby teammate. - Crossing: changing positions with your partner behind his or her back. Firstly you go between 2 defender for damaging their cooperation 6
Defending Defense 6-0 This system is simple and fundamental. Each player covers an area of the court and he/she helps the other players sliding back and forth to close open spaces. When may a player enter goal area? UNDERSTANDING QUESTIONS When a defender enters the goal area and blocks a shot it is called.. When the goalkeeper touches the ball and the ball crosses the end line it is called When the defender touches the ball and the ball crosses the end line it is called. When do you use the 9 meter line? Which player directs the game? What can you do with the ball in yours hands? 7
